Philips and Digimarc Extend Watermarking Licensing Agreement to Audio Applications and Consumer Video Applications
Thursday February 13, 5:00 am ET

EINDHOVEN, Netherlands & TUALATIN, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 13, 2003--Royal Philips Electronics (AEX:PHI)(NYSE:PHG - News) and Digimarc Corporation (Nasdaq:DMRC - News) announced today that they have signed a new agreement that extends the licensing of Digimarc`s digital watermarking patents to now include audio applications as well as a broader range of video applications.

The new non-exclusive agreement now covers video and audio applications in professional, governmental and consumer markets, thus expanding the scope of applications and market opportunities of both companies` activities in digital watermarking.

Digimarc, with headquarters in Tualatin, OR, USA, first signed a digital watermarking licensing agreement with Philips in April 2001 to support deployment of Philips` WaterCast(TM) digital video watermarking system. This agreement was extended in September 2001 to license additional applications to Philips and expand development and co-marketing activities. Since then, jointly developed solutions have included video copyright communication, forensic tracking, asset management and remote triggering applications. The latest agreement extends applications to the audio domain.

Commenting on the new agreement, Ronald Maandonks, business manager, Content Identification at Philips, said: "It is increasingly important to be able to accurately identify content through the use of digital watermarking. The expansion of the licensing agreement with Digimarc confirms our respective leading positions in digital watermarking technology. Philips was the first company to offer digital watermarking applications in both video and audio, and we are therefore delighted that we and Digimarc can look forward to expanding our activities together in these markets."

Reed Stager, vice president, Digimarc Global Licensing, added: "Extending our cooperation with Philips reflects the recent increase in commercial interest and use of digital watermarking, and Philips is continuing to develop and drive innovative new audio and video products and services into the market."

Since the introduction of the first WaterCast commercial solutions at IBC2000 in Amsterdam, Philips and its partners have successfully deployed the system to monitor broadcast content in a number of countries in most regions of the world.

Digimarc ID Systems Wins Vermont DMV Business
Tuesday March 4, 5:00 am ET
Vermont Selects Incumbent Supplier Digimarc ID Systems for Another Multi-Year Contract

BURLINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 4, 2003--Digimarc ID Systems, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Digimarc Corporation (Nasdaq:DMRC - News), today announced that the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles has selected the company to supply the state with a new-generation digital licensing system under a four-year contract with two annual renewal options.

Under the new contract, Digimarc ID Systems will deliver upgrades to the state`s innovative digital license system, including higher levels of security - not only for Vermont`s driver and state identification cards but also for the overall system. The new system will provide expanded capabilities to increase productivity and to manage driver license data, and will also exploit Digimarc`s advanced image capture technology to provide improved image qualities.

Vermont`s investment in an enhanced digital licensing system will allow the DMV to further improve the license renewal process and decrease waiting times for Vermont residents by providing easy access to data stored in a secure database and eliminating duplicate entry of customer information. This will speed the processing and improve the security of the more than 140,000 driver licenses and identification cards that Vermont issues each year at its 11 locations around the state, including one mobile issuing station.

"We are pleased to be continuing our working relationship with Digimarc ID Systems, and look forward to adding enhancements to our existing advanced digital license system. The implementation of upgrades to this system will provide us with faster turnaround times, which will in turn improve the quality of service we offer our citizens. Furthermore, the new system will allow for better security features on our identification documents," said Bonnie Rutledge, Commissioner, Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles. "We will also have a new look for our drivers` licenses, and will issue age-specific horizontal and vertical drivers` licenses as a means to help combat the serious issue of underage drinking."

"Our team has built a strong partnership with Vermont over the past eight years, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to leverage our experience to assist the state in deploying one of the most secure and easy to use digital license systems in the world," said Paul Gifford, president of Digimarc.

Workbookstock and Digimarc Identify Unauthorized Use of Copyrighted Images Via First-of-Its-Kind Image Tracking System
Monday March 17, 9:08 am ET
Digital Watermarking and Web Crawling Technology Enables Image Provider to Track and Identify Intellectual Property of Contributors

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 17, 2003-- In a stock image industry first, Workbookstock (www.workbookstock.com), a supplier of high-end, rights-managed stock images to art buyers throughout the advertising and communications industries, announced today that it has successfully tracked down and identified the use of several unauthorized, copyrighted images on the Web using proprietary technology it licensed from Digimarc Corporation (www.digimarc.com). Application of this technology was developed jointly with Workbookstock and designed to meet their very specific electronic imaging challenges.

"The Internet has been a great tool for advancing the use of stock imagery," said Alexis Scott, publisher, Workbook & Company. "However, it`s also made it easier than ever to `borrow` images and replicate them for unauthorized use. We owe it to our contributors to protect their copyrighted work -- it`s how we do business."

Workbookstock was launched by Workbook & Company, publisher of the Workbook and an array of other widely used graphic arts resources, as a commercial stock image Web site, and in less than two years has become a primary source of rights-managed stock images for art buyers. Contributors from around the world provide images for commercial use to Workbookstock, which, in turn, makes rights-managed images available to buyers and users of art for their commercial applications. To protect the intellectual property and potential earnings of its contributors, Workbookstock implemented technology that tracks copyrighted images downloaded from their site via application of digital watermarks thereby ensuring that images appearing on the Web were used appropriately and that contributors were being compensated for their work product.

"We were looking for a way to monitor the images that we host and to prevent their unauthorized use," said Doug Dawirs, director, Online Services, Workbook & Company. "Therefore, we worked with Digimarc to tailor their watermarking and tracking technology to our needs," he said.

Workbookstock`s success in locating infringed images is facilitated by use of Digimarc`s ImageBridge Pro(TM) technology, which dynamically watermarks images with transaction specific data. Workbookstock uses this information to identify the image, the date and time it was downloaded and who did the downloading.

Once the images are marked, Digimarc`s MarcSpider(TM) technology is used to track and locate the images on the Web. This image-tracking technology works by continually crawling the Web searching for digitally watermarked images and reporting results back to Workbookstock enabling the company to identify potential copyright infringements. In the majority of cases so far, users who have infringed on the copyrights of Workbookstock contributors have received cease and desist letters; the company intends to litigate those who won`t comply with the copyright laws.

"We`re pleased to be able to support Workbookstock`s efforts to communicate the copyrights of its image contributors and, ultimately, to help deter unauthorized use of those images as they are distributed electronically," said Larry Trevarthen, director of segment marketing for commercial imagery, Digimarc Corporation.

      About Workbookstock

Workbookstock brings together a dynamic collection of stock images into a user-driven Web site offering art buyers and stock users access to a broad array of high-quality, sophisticated rights-managed stock imagery for commercial use. Workbookstock.com was launched in November 2001 by Workbook & Company, producer of the most widely used graphic arts resources available today including: Workbook/Photography, Workbook/Illustration, Workbook Directory of Creative Talent & Services, Workbook Single Image, Workbook Framed, Workbook Lists, Workbook Online Portfolios, workbook.com and workbookstock.com. Workbook & Company is headquartered in Los Angeles and has offices in New York and Chicago.

Ryuki Tachibana of IBM Japan Ltd. Receives Award for Research in Audio Watermarking

TUALATIN, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 28, 2003--Digimarc Corporation (Nasdaq:DMRC - News) today announced that the digital watermarking industry has recognized Ryuki Tachibana of IBM Japan Ltd. with the "Best Paper Award" for his work in audio watermarking.

The award is presented as part of the first industry-wide showcase on digital watermarking technology that took place during the 2003 SPIE Security and Watermarking of Multimedia Contents V Conference in January in Santa Clara, Calif.

Tachibana`s winning paper explores the use of audio watermarking during live performances. He will be presented his award at the second annual digital watermarking industry gathering planned in conjunction with next year`s SPIE conference. At this year`s first industry gathering, companies such as Activated Content, Alpvision, Corbis, Digibits, Digimarc, Digitreal, Fraunhofer, Macrovision, Teletrax, Philips, Sealtronics, Univ. of Rochester, and Verance demonstrated their respective technologies to showcase the progress of digital watermarking research and development and its critical role in the future of the digital economy.

The selection committee for the Best Paper Award includes Adnan Alattar, Ph.D, Digimarc; Prof. Edward J. Delp, Purdue University; Ton Kalker, Ph.D, Phillips Research, Netherlands; Prof. Nasir D. Memon, Polytechnic University; and Prof. Benoit M. Macq, University Catholique de Louvain, Belgium.

"The idea of mixing the watermark signal and the host audio signal in the air to allow for digital watermarking of live performances is a compelling and original idea, and Mr. Tachibana presented it in a very clear and interesting way," said Adnan Alattar, the chair of the "Best Paper Award" selection committee and a senior researcher at Digimarc. "This idea extends the application of digital watermarking from pre-recorded audio files to live performances in concert halls."

Six papers were nominated for the award by the chair of each digital watermarking-related session of the SPIE conference. The selection committee evaluated the papers for their originality, clarity and potential impact on the field of digital watermarking.

Government Study Demonstrates Leading Performance for Facial Technology Offered in Digimarc Identity Verification Solutions
Wednesday April 2, 5:00 am ET

BURLINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 2, 2003--Digimarc ID Systems, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Digimarc Corporation (Nasdaq:DMRC - News), today announced that the facial recognition technology Digimarc sources for drivers license applications in North America, FaceIt®, was a top performer according to the recent Facial Recognition Vendor Test (FRVT) 2002 sponsored by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

FaceIt® technology is developed by Identix Incorporated (Nasdaq:IDNX - News), the world`s leading multi-biometric security technology company.

NIST evaluated 14 facial recognition products based on the analysis of 121,589 images of 37,437 people in three large-scale, real-world application areas: verification, identification and watch list recognition performance. In all cases, Identix technology ranked among the top 3.

For large-scale database searching -- the tests most relevant to DMV applications that seek to eliminate duplicate registrations and identity fraud -- Identix performed at over 70 percent, while most of the other participants performed at less than 40%. For verification applications, which are used to verify whether the identity of a person matches that shown on an identity document, Identix performed at over 90% correct (with false accept rates of 1 in 100), again dramatically exceeding the performance of the majority of the other participants.

"We are very pleased with the results of the FRVT, as it validates and demonstrates the accuracy and performance of our identity verification solutions," said Paul Gifford, Digimarc President. "Our strategic alliance with Identix allows Digimarc to offer an industry leading biometric capability, with proven accuracy and scalability, for a range of drivers license, law enforcement and security applications. Our strategy of using the best-of-breed biometrics technologies, unlike other vendors who are locked into specific algorithms, allows us to offer the best overall value and performance to our customers. The bottom line is that we offer issuers and users of identity documents solutions that are able to detect and prevent a higher percentage of attempted identity frauds than our competitors."

Digimarc ID Systems is the supplier of Identix`s FaceIt® facial recognition technology for drivers licenses in North America. FRVT 2002, administered in July and August of 2002, was co-sponsored by the Counterdrug Technology Development Program Office, the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NAVSEA).

Identix is the only FRVT 2002 vendor selected to participate in DARPA`s multi-year Human ID at a Distance program. The Company has also been a past recipient of competitive contract awards from the National Institute of Justice and other government agencies. Its FaceIt technology is the most widely deployed, covering a broad range of applications including law enforcement, surveillance, and identification (i.e., driver license, voter registration) solutions. The most recent state to adopt Digimarc`s biometric solution with integrated FaceIt technology is Colorado, where driver`s license applicants are compared with the 10 million records on file to identify possible duplicates and aid in the investigation of driver license identity fraud.

Further information on the FRVT results can be accessed at http://www.shareholder.com/identix/ReleaseDetail.cfm?Release…

Digimarc ID Systems wins New Jersey contract with state-of-the-art security features and technology

BURLINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 21, 2003-- Digimarc ID Systems, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Digimarc Corporation (Nasdaq:DMRC - News), today announced that it will supply the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) with a highly secure digital driver license system that includes digital watermarking and other covert and forensic security features over a three-year contract period.

Under the contract, which supports a major overhaul of the state`s existing card design and issuing system, Digimarc ID Systems is providing digital image capture systems, software and over-the-counter printers to support New Jersey`s more than 45 driver license issuing locations. The new state-of-the-art digital drivers license system incorporates Digimarc`s industry leading digital camera system and Find-a-Face software for superior image quality and ease of use for the operators.

Digimarc ID Systems will also be an integral partner in the design of the State`s image repository as well as in the re-design of the card itself, which will include multiple overt, covert and forensic tracking security features not currently found in the New Jersey license. The New Jersey driver license system will support the issuance of approximately 2 million driver license and identification documents a year and is expected to be among the most advanced and secure in the U.S.

"By adopting digital watermarking, together with a number of other advanced security technologies, New Jersey is taking the lead in the security of state-issued identity documents," said Paul Gifford, Digimarc`s president and COO. "We look forward to partnering with New Jersey as it becomes a model for their use of advanced digital driver license technology in promoting public safety and national security."

"Increasing driver license security through the most innovative security features and improving the system that issues our driver license are big parts of the commitment we have made to providing our citizens a new level of customer service and achieving a more secure card," said Adel Ebeid, Director of Technology, Motor Vehicles Commission. "We are excited to be partnering with Digimarc ID Systems to meet both of these important goals."

Digimarc Reports First Profitable Quarter As A Public Company
Tuesday April 22, 4:19 pm ET

PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 22, 2003--Digimarc Corporation (Nasdaq:DMRC - News), the leading supplier of digital watermarking technologies and a leader in secure personal identification systems, today announced total revenues of $21.7 million and net income of $29,000 for the quarter ended March 31, 2003.

This marked the company`s first profitable quarter as a public company, culminating five consecutive quarters of continuous improvement in financial and operating performance.

Total revenues for the first quarter of 2003 were $21.7 million, up $3.2 million or 18% from the $18.5 million reported in the comparable period of 2002. Basic and diluted earnings per share for the first quarter of 2003 were $0.00 based on 17.66 million weighted average shares outstanding for the quarter (basic) and 18.35 million weighted average shares outstanding for the quarter (diluted). This compares with basic and diluted net loss per share of $0.24 based on 17.11 million weighted average shares for the comparable period of 2002.

"Our financial performance for the quarter was solid with a 4% sequential growth in total revenues from last quarter and modest profits," said E.K. Ranjit, Digimarc CFO. "Both revenues and profits were within our guidance for the quarter, and our profitability this quarter marks a major milestone for Digimarc as a public company. In addition, gross profit at 45% of total revenues exceeded our expectations. The improvement in gross profit was primarily driven by a favorable product mix and our continuing efforts to improve operating efficiencies."

Digimarc Chairman and CEO Bruce Davis said: "Our success in the quarter was primarily the result of continuing performance improvements in our ID Systems business, where the team delivered sequential growth in revenues, improved margins, and lower costs." Davis continued, "ID Systems` exceptional performance not only drove financial results but also the adoption of digital watermarking technology. Yesterday, the State of New Jersey announced the award of its new digital driver license system contract to Digimarc, and announced that it is the first state to incorporate digital watermarking into its licenses for enhanced security. This is a landmark event in our initiative to foster broad adoption of digital watermarking in the field of secure personal identification systems."

      Business Outlook

The following statements concerning projections of future financial performance are based on current expectations. These statements are forward-looking, subject to risks and uncertainties, and actual results may differ materially. These statements do not include the potential impact of any investments outside the ordinary course of business or mergers and acquisitions. Continuing uncertainty in global economic conditions makes it particularly difficult to predict product demand and other related matters.

Digimarc estimates that second quarter 2003 total revenues will be in the range of $21.2 million to $22.0 million. Revenues are highly dependent on a number of factors including, but not limited to, general economic conditions, the company`s ability to predict card issuance volumes from existing state drivers license programs, the company`s ability to secure new contracts, the political and competitive environment in countries in which the company seeks business, changes in customer order or usage patterns, and changes in the demand for the company`s products and services.

Digimarc expects gross profit in the second quarter of 2003 to be in the range of 45 to 47 percent. Gross profit may be higher or lower than expected due to a number of factors including, but not limited to, competitive pricing actions, changes in estimated product costs, changes in the company`s estimated product mix, and changes in revenue levels.

Digimarc expects combined operating expenses for research, development and engineering and selling, general and administrative of approximately $9.1 million to $9.7 million in the second quarter of 2003. Operating expenses, particularly certain marketing and compensation-related expenses, vary depending on the level of revenue and profits.

Digimarc expects non-cash charges related to the amortization of deferred stock compensation to be approximately $450,000 in the second quarter. These charges relate to options granted to employees in 1999, prior to the company`s initial public offering. The company will record the last of these charges in the fourth quarter of 2003.

Digimarc expects to record a provision for income taxes of approximately $50,000 during the second quarter of 2003 that relates to taxes payable in foreign locations. Income taxes for domestic operations are expected to be zero during the same period due to net operating loss carryforward benefits the company has from prior periods.

Digimarc expects other income, consisting mainly of interest income, to be approximately $105,000 in the second quarter of 2003, assuming no material change in average cash balances or interest rates from the first quarter.

Digimarc estimates diluted earnings per share to be in the range of $0.00 to $0.02 for the second quarter of 2003. For the full year 2003, we remain comfortable with the First Call Consensus of $0.21 diluted earnings per share.

      Conference Call:

      Digimarc turns in first-quarter profit
Tuesday April 22, 6:06 pm ET

LOS ANGELES, April 22 (Reuters) - Digimarc Corp (NasdaqNM:DMRC - News), a maker of digital watermarking technology, on Tuesday reported its first quarterly profit as a public company spurred by rising sales of its identification products.

The Portland, Oregon-based company reported first quarter net income of $29,000, or nil cents per share compared with a net loss of $4.1 million, or 24 cents per share in the same quarter last year.

Revenues rose 18 percent to $21.7 million from $18.5 million in the same quarter last year.

Digimarc said its successful quarter was primarily the result of improved operations in its ID Systems division. It added that earlier this week, the division won a contract from the State of New Jersey to use Digimarc`s digital watermarking technology in driver licenses.

Digimarc estimates that second quarter diluted earnings per share will range from nil to 2 cents per share on revenues between $21.2 million and $22 million. It added that it remains "comfortable with the First Call consensus of 21 cents diluted earnings per share" for the full year.

SAFE ID Act Signed Into Law Reinforces Digimarc Approach to ID Security
Thursday May 1, 4:22 pm ET

TUALATIN, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 1, 2003--Digimarc Corp. (Nasdaq:DMRC - News)--U.S. Senator Joe Biden yesterday joined with President George W. Bush and other members of Congress to sign The Prosecuting Remedies and Tools Against the Exploitation of Children Today (PROTECT) Act.
This new law will help prevent and prosecute crimes against children by cracking down on the exploitation of kids and increasing penalties for criminals who prey on them.

A provision of this Act, The Secure Authentication Feature and Enhanced Identification Defense (SAFE ID) Act, will establish criminal penalties for illegally using authentication features, such as holograms or watermarks, to create false, misleading or inaccurate identification. This aspect of the Act will make it harder to falsify the documents of an abducted child, help reduce underage drinking and identity theft by making it harder for criminals to sell fake IDs, and contribute to the fight against terrorism by preventing terrorists from obtaining false identification.

"We congratulate Senator Biden for sponsoring the SAFE ID Act and are impressed by the bipartisan support for this important measure," said Digimarc Chairman and CEO Bruce Davis. "Digimarc is committed to enhancing the security of driver licenses. This Act protects the kinds of authentication features, such as digital watermarking, that Digimarc customers like the state of New Jersey are adding to driver licenses and identity documents as a means to prevent identity theft and fraud and to enhance homeland security."

Elisar Software Partners With Digimarc Corp.
Monday June 2, 12:50 pm ET
Companies to Introduce Significantly Improved Digital Content Control Solutions

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Elisar Software Corporation, the leading innovator of digital content controls and security solutions, today announces a partnership with Digimarc Corporation, the leading supplier of digital watermarking technologies and a leader in secure personal identification systems. Under the terms of the agreement, Elisar will integrate its proprietary MediaRights application suite with Digimarc`s ImageBridge watermarking products. Both companies will promote the other`s offerings and Elisar will sell and support the integrated solution.

MediaRights, Elisar`s flagship product, offers proprietary, kernel level security that gives digital content distributors the ability to manage and secure access, viewing, editing and distribution rights to their digital media (i.e.; text, images, audio and motion). Digimarc`s ImageBridge technology is the industry leading digital watermarking solution that allows digital image owners to communication copyright information and track images on line.

"Combining Elisar`s MediaRights technology with Digimarc`s ImageBridge provides customers a more complete solution," says Leslie Hughes, Elisar`s new CEO. "With MediaRights, content distributors will be able to define the level of trust for a specific user or a group of users and then determine the rights that are appropriate. Should a transaction or transfer of data occur, ImageBridge ensures that copyright and transaction data stay with the distributed media. Partnering with Digimarc, the global leader in digital watermarking technology is not only exciting for our company but brings real value to our customers."

"Digimarc is the global leader in digital watermarking technology used to authenticate, validate and communicate information within digital and analog media and we are very excited about the relationship we are establishing with Elisar," said Greg Applegate, Vice President of Business Development for Digimarc. "ImageBridge customers can leverage MediaRights to increase their online sales and promotions, while greatly reducing the risk of misuse of their content."

Until now, content protection technologies have been monolithic and overly obtrusive, forcing content distributors to either allow access to unprotected media or to apply inflexible controls to every piece of content they want to protect. By tightly integrating Elisar`s rights management and content control technologies with Digimarc`s watermarking solutions, there is now a highly flexible solution that puts the control back into the content distributors` hands.

Friday June 6, 5:00 am ET

TUALATIN, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 6, 2003--Digimarc Corporation (Nasdaq:DMRC - News) today announced that its ID Systems subsidiary has been awarded a contract to supply voter ID cards and image capture equipment for the upcoming Mozambique voter registration taking place as part of the country`s presidential and parliamentary elections at the end of this year.
The Mozambique voter registration is organized by the Electoral Administration Technical Secretariat (STAE) and will cover the 2.9 million citizens who were previously ineligible to vote in the 1999 election or who have lost their cards since then. The country has 7.1 million voters who registered for the last election out of a total population of 19.6 million; voters with cards from the prior election will not be required to re-register.

Digimarc ID Systems will provide portrait capture hardware, card materials, accessories and training manuals for Mozambique`s 8,350 polling centers across the country.

"The Mozambique contract follows other recent voter registration contract wins for Digimarc ID Systems such as Namibia and Yemen, and demonstrates the ability of Digimarc to support projects of this importance and size within a tight timeframe," said Nigel Ward, managing director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Digimarc ID Systems.

Michigan Extends Contract with Digimarc, Adopts Digital Watermarking Security Feature
Thursday July 17, 5:00 am ET
Michigan becomes third state to adopt digital watermarking security features in its digital driver license

TUALATIN, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 17, 2003-- Digimarc Corporation (Nasdaq:DMRC - News) today announced that it has been awarded a five-year contract extension with the Michigan Department of State.

In addition to the contract extension, Digimarc also announced that Michigan is the third state, after New Jersey and Vermont, to adopt digital watermarking as a new and enhanced layer of security in its driver license.

Under the contract extension, Digimarc will provide additional system and security enhancements to Michigan`s digital driver license system and new options designed to improve customer service and operator use of the system. Digital watermarking is being integrated into the new driver licenses to provide reliable point of inspection authentication and forensic analysis capabilities.

"We are very pleased to respond to the state`s commitment to enhanced security with the addition of digital watermarking security features, and thrilled to extend what has been a very successful working relationship for the past five years between Digimarc and the Michigan Department of State," said Indra Paul, president, Digimarc ID Systems. "We look forward to supplying Michigan with system upgrades that will ultimately benefit the citizens of the state through higher security and improved processing times."

"The quality of our digital driver license system and the responsiveness of Digimarc to our needs were key factors in our decision to extend this contract," said Michael Wartella, Director, Customer Services Administration, Michigan Department of State. "We anticipate that enhancements to the system will improve operations while providing a highly secure and unique driver license."

Future enhancements to Michigan`s driver license system include upgrading 184 image capture stations with Digimarc Find-a-Face(TM) software for superior image consistency and quality, and the implementation of a Web-based retrieval capability that allows state personnel to quickly access applicant information from the central image server, thereby speeding license renewal and replacement. The contract also covers the redesign of the Michigan driver license with new security features and technologies; delivery of two portable issuance systems for remote use; and new hardware, monitors and security protocols for Michigan`s Secretary of State branch offices.

Michigan issues 2.5 million driver license and identification cards annually.

Digimarc says wins stay to keep Georgia contract
Friday August 1, 6:22 am ET

NEW YORK, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Digimarc Corp. (NasdaqNM:DMRC - News) said on Friday a Georgia court had granted its request to stall a decision by the state`s department of motor vehicles to work with a competitor on a new driver license system.

Viisage Technology (NasdaqNM:VISG - News), which makes facial recognition technology and other products, won a contract to install the state`s new system last November.

But Digimarc protested that the state had violated its own procedures while looking for a technology provider. The court ruled that there was "a compelling case that irregularities occurred during the procurement process," Digimarc said in a written statement.

Digimarc provides driver licenses for 33 U.S. states.

After the court issued a stay on the state`s deal with Viisage, Digimarc said it would continue to be the Georgia driver license program service provider until the matter is resolved.

Digimarc to Demonstrate Wireless MediaBridge Application to Smart Camera Phone Developers at Intel Developer Forum
Tuesday September 16, 5:00 am ET
Digimarc ports Wireless MediaBridge reader application to Intel`s PCA and Wireless MMX(TM)

TUALATIN, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 16, 2003-- Digimarc Corporation (Nasdaq:DMRC - News) today announced that it is working with Intel to demonstrate a powerful wireless application that turns printed materials into wireless launching points to compelling consumer and business content, including entertainment and mobile commerce, delivered in a mix of streaming audio and video directly to a user`s smart camera phone or PDA.
Digimarc will showcase its Wireless MediaBridge(TM) system at the Intel® Developer Forum in San Jose, Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, and will be available at the show to discuss future market opportunities for Wireless MediaBridge applications with potential service providers, application developers and wireless hardware manufacturers.

Digimarc`s Wireless MediaBridge system can bring seamless delivery of compelling entertainment and e-commerce content to next-generation mobile users. Brand owners can enable printed advertisements, logos, and product packaging with imperceptible MediaBridge digital watermarks, creating printed hot spots that offer direct delivery of relevant audio, video and rich media content streamed to the mobile user. Whether purchasing tickets, sampling and buying music, or connecting to entertainment, Wireless MediaBridge can connect brand owners to one of the fastest growing Internet demographics.

Wireless service providers can take advantage of this application to offer new and enhanced services that allow their customers to use Intel PCA-based smart camera phones and PDAs to interact with MediaBridge-enabled print materials, including advertising and product packaging.

"We are very excited about the performance and capabilities Digimarc has demonstrated with Wireless MMX," said Laurence Pegrum, platform architect at Intel. "The Wireless MediaBridge system demonstrates the power of the Intel PCA architecture in cell phones and wireless PDAs, and is positioned to become one of the leaders in a new generation of media-rich, image-based wireless applications."

"The emerging wireless life centers on delivery of content where and when we want it, and the anytime connection of distributed communities of mobile users," said J. Scott Carr, president, Digimarc Watermarking Solutions. "Printed materials are an intrinsic part of our daily life, and today they are walled off from the wireless world. With the Wireless MediaBridge system, brand owners can deliver robust entertainment and commerce directly to the palms of these communities, allowing mobile users to act on the inspiration created by print, and share that inspiration with others in the wireless world."

The Intel Wireless MMX Technology Platform is the latest high-performance, low-power, seamless extension to Intel® XScale(TM) microarchitecture. The 64-bit Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) architecture gives a performance boost to many applications including motion video, telephony, conferencing, 2D graphics, and 3D graphics.

The Digimarc Wireless MediaBridge system is the mobile version of the Digimarc MediaBridge system, and is built on Digimarc`s market-leading digital watermarking platform, which weaves imperceptible, machine-readable data into printed materials and digital images. Unseen during normal use, the codes are readable by computers and software and enable a wide range of content navigation and management applications.

Digimarc Corporation Reports Preliminary Fourth Quarter and Year-End 2003 Financial Results
Tuesday January 20, 7:00 pm ET
and Provides Business Update and Preliminary 2004 Financial Guidance

TUALATIN, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 20, 2004--Digimarc Corporation (Nasdaq:DMRC - News) today announced that it expects to report total revenues for the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2003 of approximately $19.0 million and net income for the quarter of approximately $0.03 diluted earnings per share. The company had anticipated total revenues in the range of $24 to $25 million and diluted earnings per share in the range of $0.07 to $0.10 for the quarter. As a result of lower than anticipated revenues in the quarter, the company now expects to report, for the fiscal year ended Dec. 31, 2003, total revenues of approximately $85.0 million and diluted earnings per share of approximately $0.11.
"The fourth quarter 2003 shortfall in revenues and profits was due to a number of factors," said E.K.Ranjit, CFO of Digimarc. "There were three main factors. First, an order for a foreign voter identification program that was originally forecasted to be awarded in the third quarter and to be partially shipped in the fourth quarter did not happen. In addition, certain billable activities related to the New Jersey driver license system were delayed due to delays in the implementation of the system beyond our control. The third significant factor contributing to the revenue shortfall was unexpectedly low domestic driver license issuance volumes due to seasonality and wind-down of issuance in some former accounts."

According to Bruce Davis, chairman and CEO of Digimarc, "While the shortfall in Q4 revenues was disappointing, we anticipate a quick return to growth and continuing improvements in financial performance. Regarding the primary contributors to lower than expected revenues, the voter identification opportunity was for a legacy film-based system with relatively low margins and little strategic value. The delayed New Jersey shipments are being made in Q1 and the system there is now operational. The lower issuance volumes in Q4 resulted from seasonality, coupled with the effects of wind-down of issuances in Maryland and Oklahoma. The combination of the wind-down of these contracts and seasonality has created a trough in Q4 of 2003 and Q1 of 2004 that will be remedied as the new Florida driver license system and other implementation activities begin to generate revenues. The Florida contract alone will more than compensate for the lost volume from these states when it becomes operational later this year."

Supporting Davis`s view that the downturn will be short-lived, the company announced today that it has been awarded a major contract win in Mexico. The federal agency in Mexico responsible for issuing photo ID cards to eligible voters for local and federal elections has awarded to Digimarc a four-year contract to supply voter identification cards that is anticipated to generate more than $19 million in revenues. Implementation of the program has already begun and the first cards are expected to be produced prior to mid-year 2004.

Davis went on to say that "we are seeing a number of promising developments in digital watermarking, including continuing rapid adoption of digital watermarking in driver license programs by nine states who account for approximately 20% of all driver licenses issued annually in the United States. Massachusetts, Alabama and Florida are the latest states to adopt digital watermarking. Coincidentally, digital watermarking appears to be gaining favor among producers and distributors of movies, music and television programming as a means of persistent content identification supporting a variety of important business processes."

In news regarding the use of digital watermarking in the entertainment field, the company announced that AudioAudit has entered into a multi-year license with Digimarc to use audio watermarking for television broadcast monitoring services and that Teletrax, another of Digimarc`s licensees, recently announced a multi-year contract with Universal Domestic Television for monitoring of entertainment show promotions.

Preliminary 2004 Guidance and Business Outlook

The following statements concerning projections of future financial performance are based on current expectations. These statements are forward-looking, subject to risks and uncertainties, and actual results may differ materially. These statements do not include the potential impact of any investments outside the ordinary course of business or mergers and acquisitions

Company management estimates that first quarter 2004 total revenues will be in the range of $20.0 million to $21.0 million, with diluted earnings per share in the range of $0.02 to $0.04. For the full year 2004, management expects diluted earnings per share to be in the range of $0.30 to $0.35, based on estimated total revenues for full year 2004 in the range of $92.0 million to $95.0 million.

The company further anticipates robust growth in 2005, as several recent contract wins reach full deployment, including the Mexican voter identification program and Florida driver license system.

Massachusetts Partners with Digimarc to Enhance Driver License Security
Tuesday January 20, 7:10 pm ET
State upgrades licenses with Digimarc IDMarc(TM) digital watermarking, Kinegram(R) optically variable graphics and other security features

TUALATIN, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 20, 2004-- Digimarc Corporation (Nasdaq:DMRC - News) today announced that the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) has adopted a package of security enhancements and upgrades for its driver license, which Digimarc has been producing for the state since 1999.

As part of the security upgrade, Massachusetts will implement a range of state-of-the-art ID security features, becoming the first state to incorporate a 2-D Kinegram on its license and the sixth state to adopt the IDMarc digital watermarking security feature.

A Kinegram is an optically variable graphic (OVG) that moves when viewed from different angles. The feature, which can be examined visually, is made with a unique process that is not commercially available, making it one of the most secure overt security features reserved for use in banknotes, passports, ID cards and now U.S. driver licenses.

With the adoption of Digimarc IDMarc(TM) digital watermarking, Massachusetts is taking advantage of an innovative layer of covert, machine-readable security that enables automated cross-jurisdictional document authentication and age verification, and aids in forensic analysis.

"We welcome the opportunity to support our home state in its efforts to promote a more secure driver license system for the Commonwealth," said Indra Paul, president, Digimarc ID Systems, which is based in Burlington, Massachusetts. "Our work demonstrates a long-term commitment to working with the Massachusetts RMV and law enforcement to provide robust security features that are designed to deter counterfeiting."

"Massachusetts is committed to continually enhancing the security of our driver license. Thus, we are pleased to be partnering with Digimarc to incorporate the most sophisticated security technologies available," said Kimberly Hinden, registrar, Massachusetts RMV. "These enhancements will help further defend our driver license against the threat of counterfeiting and fraud."

Our search for technology companies with exceptional growth rates and recent profits turned up these 25 winners.

Smack amid the worst downturn in Silicon Valley`s history, the 25 fastest-growing technology stars listed here managed to increase their revenue an average of 37% in the last 12 months.
Leading our list: Digimarc, whose digital watermarking technologies--for authenticating drivers` licenses and such and thwarting digital piracy--fill a timely need in a security-conscious world.Digimarc`s 2001 acquisition of Polaroid`s digital identification systems helped it post a five-year annualized sales growth rate of 242%. Even so, the firm`s latest 12-month sales of $87 million were up 25% over a year ago.

Another finalist is Ebay, whose stock hit a high of $64 during the Internet bubble and had fallen to $13 in nine months. Now Ebay is back: Its shares hit an alltime high of $67 in January. The company nearly doubled its sales every year for five years, reaching the $2 billion mark, and maintaining that torrid pace will be difficult. But Wall Street is betting Ebay has ample room for growth--it sells for 64 times estimated 2004 earnings.

Nextel Communications, with its popular long-range digital walkie-talkie service, is the largest entry on our fast-growing-tech list, with $10 billion in sales in the latest 12 months. Go to www.forbes.com/fasttech for more data on all of these companies, including a free downloadable file for your Palm handheld or other PDA.

How did we find these companies? We searched through nearly 2,500 publicly traded U.S. technology stocks, looking for companies with outstanding five-year annualized sales growth as well as consistent year-over-year sales growth of 10% or more in the same period. From there we looked for profitable firms with revenues of at least $25 million and sales growth of 10% or better in the latest 12 months.

      The 25 Fastest-Growing Technology Companies
      A Pirate`s Worst Enemy
Lisa DiCarlo, 02.05.04, 7:00 AM ET

NEW YORK - Bruce Davis, confesses to "a little bit" of ambivalence about profitability versus revenue growth. As chief executive of Digimarc, number one on our list of The 25 Fastest-Growing Technology Companies, he is conflicted about whether to focus on top-line or bottom-line growth. It`s a classic dotcom-era scenario. Will Digimarc suffer the same fate as so many high-growth companies of the nineties?
Digimarc (nasdaq: DMRC - news - people ) is a leader in the nascent but promising market for digital watermarking technology, which helps track and identify unauthorized use of digital photos, audio, video and documents. A digital watermark is software code, usually invisible to the user, which is embedded into the content. The technology in and of itself won`t stop piracy. but it`s an important ingredient for, among other things, tracing leaks or spotting false identification documents.

Such technology would have come in handy in tracking down more quickly the person who illegally distributed "screener" copies of The Last Samurai.

That`s why Digimarc, of Tualatin, Ore., has been on a roll since the late nineties. The company`s revenue has grown 242%, annualized, over five years. Davis expects at least 10% sales growth in 2004, which would result in revenue of $92 million to $95 million. And he`s looking for earnings per share of between 30 and 35 cents, up from 11 cents in 2003, the firm`s first full year of profitability.

The company, which was founded in 1996, raised $80 million in a public offering in 1999. By 2000, Digimarc had caught the attention of Macrovision (nasdaq: MVSN - news - people ), which develops technologies for copyright protection, and the consumer electronics giant Phillips. The companies invested a total of $60 million in Digimarc, giving each about a 12% stake in the firm. Each has executives on Digimarc`s board of directors.

Digital watermarking helps make IDs tamper proof.

Although most of its early growth was organic, the company successfully digested its first big acquisition in late 2001, when it paid $56 million for the ID Systems division of Polaroid, which filed for Chapter 11 that year. That deal gave Digimarc an instant leadership position in secure ID cards. Today, Digimarc`s technology produces digital-based driver`s licenses for 32 states, as well as government IDs for the United States and other countries.

Now Digimarc is broadening its focus to all forms of digital media. Entertainment is the most fertile opportunity. Universal, a unit of Vivendi Universal (nyse: V - news - people ), said it would use watermarking technology from Digimarc and others to block illegal copies of its movies and television programs from being played on supporting devices.

Davis` resume seems a perfect fit for the industry and the task at hand. He began his career as an intellectual property attorney before being awarded 20 patents in the field of digital watermarking, electronic program guides and user interfaces.

After serving as chief executive of videogame maker Activision (nasdaq: ATVI - news - people ), he founded TV Guide On Screen, a joint venture between News Corp. (nyse: NWS - news - people ) and TCI that supplied electronic program guides and navigational software for cable TV. The company eventually merged with Prevue Networks, which is now part of Gemstar (nasdaq: GMST - news - people ).

Despite its heady start, Digimarc is still in the early stages of development. Davis hints that Digimarc, which has $75 million in cash, is on the hunt for acquisitions in 2004. Without naming any specific companies, Davis says Digimarc is looking for businesses that will expand and diversify its distribution channels.

"Our equity investors tell us not to worry about the bottom line," he says. "They want us to spend that money on acquisitions." Even so, he`ll have to deal with what he concedes is a "very tough" balancing act--satisfying stakeholders Macrovision and Phillips by expanding revenues, while pleasing those shareholders who want to see the company increase its profits.

Under the terms of the bid and contract award, Digimarc will be the prime contractor responsible for design, installation, maintenance and servicing of the system.
