Hallo, zusammen!

ViroLogic and International AIDS Vaccine Initiative Sign Collaborative Agreement
ViroLogic`s Assay Services to Facilitate Global Development of AIDS Vaccines
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. and NEW YORK, March 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/
ViroLogic, Inc. (Nasdaq: VLGC) and the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) today announced the signing of a collaborative agreement to facilitate development of vaccines against HIV/AIDS. Under terms of the agreement, ViroLogic`s novel proprietary PhenoSense(TM) HIV Antibody Neutralization Assay will be utilized in IAVI-sponsored preclinical and clinical research studies evaluating HIV vaccine candidates.
The broad agreement covers testing of any HIV/AIDS vaccine candidates that IAVI brings to ViroLogic from IAVI`s many biopharmaceutical, academic and private research institution and government research collaborators. Financial terms were not disclosed.
"Accurate and reliable measurements of neutralizing antibodies is one of the fundamental tools necessary for comparison of candidate HIV vaccines in order to prioritize candidates for accelerated development and progression to efficacy trials," said Wayne Koff, Ph.D. Senior Vice President for Research and Development at IAVI. "We welcome ViroLogic as a partner in our goal to solve one of the major challenges currently impeding AIDS vaccine development, the design of vaccines capable of inducing broadly effective neutralizing antibodies against globally diverse strains of HIV, and in helping to speed the development of safe, effective, accessible, preventative HIV vaccines."
Last week, results of studies using ViroLogic`s PhenoSense HIV technology for measuring neutralizing antibodies were reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). These studies clarified the important role antibodies play in the body`s fight against HIV infection and suggested that the PhenoSense HIV Antibody Neutralization Assay could significantly accelerate the development of HIV vaccines.
"We believe that our state-of-the-art PhenoSense HIV Antibody Neutralization Assay is more sensitive, reproducible and rapid than conventional neutralizing antibody assays. The recognition that it can be instrumental in speeding the development of preventative vaccines against AIDS is exciting," stated Christos Petropoulos, Ph.D., Vice President of Research and Development at ViroLogic. "We look forward to a productive collaboration with IAVI and their partners in this critically important area of medicine."
In addition to testing serum samples for HIV neutralizing antibody activity in vaccine studies, ViroLogic`s high-throughput PhenoSense HIV Entry platform is also used for the preclinical and clinical characterization of a new class of antiretroviral drugs, referred to as entry inhibitors. Entry inhibitors block HIV replication by preventing the virus from entering new cells.

ViroLogic Announces Study Published in AIDS
Demonstrates Long-Term Predictive Power of Its
PhenoSense HIV Assay
Monday April 14, 8:03 am ET
First Published Study to Demonstrate That Phenotypic Drug Susceptibility
Testing is Correlated With Improved Long-Term Virological Outcomes
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., April 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ViroLogic, Inc. (Nasdaq:
VLGC - News) today announced that data from a study published in the current issue of the
journal AIDS support the clinical utility of its patented PhenoSense(TM) HIV assay for
phenotypic analysis of anti-retroviral drug susceptibility information to guide therapeutic
decisions in the management of HIV/AIDS patients.
This randomized clinical trial,
conducted by researchers from the
AIDS Clinical Trial Group (ACTG) 364,
including researchers from Stanford
University Medical Center, Harvard
School of Public Health, Beth Israel
Deaconess Medical Center, ViroLogic
and Bristol-Myers Squibb, is the first
published study to demonstrate that
phenotypic drug susceptibility
information is correlated with improved
long-term virological outcomes.
"The data clearly showed that reduced
susceptibility (i.e., resistance) in the
PhenoSense HIV assay is an important
independent risk factor for drug
treatment failure, and provides clinicians with useful information to predict long-term treatment
outcomes over almost 3 years," said Nick Hellmann, M.D., Vice President of Clinical Research
at ViroLogic and one of the co-authors of the article. "This study reaffirms the predictive value of
phenotypic tests and suggests that the use of the PhenoSense HIV assay in combination with
other virus and patient parameters can help physicians select durable therapeutic regimens for
HIV/AIDS patients."
In this study, a strong correlation between susceptibility in the PhenoSense HIV assay and
virological outcome of multi-drug therapy was observed over a period of almost 3 years.
Patients whose HIV was sensitive in the PhenoSense assay to more drugs in the prescribed
anti-retroviral treatment regimen exhibited significantly slower virological failure (i.e., the inability
of therapy to reduce viral load and maintain it at a low level) than patients whose virus was
sensitive to fewer drugs. Based on the study findings, the researchers concluded that the
PhenoSense HIV assay is a significant, independent predictor of long-term response to
marketed anti-retroviral drugs among treatment-experienced patients.
Study Details
The trial was performed in 131 nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI-) experienced
patients who had viral load greater than 2,000 copies of HIV RNA/mL of plasma. Results of the
PhenoSense HIV assay at baseline were compared to the change in HIV viral load from 16 to
144 weeks following initiation of treatment with a 3- to 4-drug regimen, consisting of two NRTIs;
efavirenz, a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI); and/or nelfinavir, a protease
inhibitor. Virological failure of the 3- to 4-drug regimen was defined as two serial measurements
of HIV viral load greater than 2,000 copies/mL.
Because cross-resistance to NRTIs is recognized as a monitoring and therapeutic challenge,
the ability to accurately measure NRTI drug resistance and to show that those resistance
measures accurately predict virological outcome in NRTI-experienced patients had been
difficult. However, the PhenoSense HIV assay, which provides a highly sensitive measure of
susceptibility to 16 anti-retroviral agents, proved to be significantly correlated to treatment
outcomes in this study.
The trial data showed that a higher baseline viral load and lower baseline phenotypic
susceptibility to drugs in the treatment regimen, as measured by the PhenoSense assay, were
independently associated with virological failure of antiretroviral drug therapy.
Also, the findings confirmed that enhanced susceptibility, (referred to as "hyper-susceptibility")
to efavirenz, as measured by the PhenoSense HIV assay, correlated with phenotypic
resistance to the NRTI, zidovudine. Furthermore, hyper-susceptibility to efavirenz in the
PhenoSense HIV assay was independently associated with a lowered risk of virological failure
of the multi-drug therapy. PhenoSense HIV is the only commercial assay that currently reports
hyper-susceptibility information.

ViroLogic Announces Study in AIDS Supports Value of its Resistance Tests to Guide Use of Newer HIV Drugs
- Predictive Power of ViroLogic`s Assays Addresses Challenges of Evolving Treatment Regimens -
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Apr 23, 2003 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- ViroLogic, Inc. (Nasdaq: VLGC) announced today that results of a study published in the upcoming issue of AIDS support the utility of its proprietary drug resistance assays to guide HIV/AIDS treatment with regimens containing the recently-marketed protease inhibitors (PIs), lopinavir (Kaletra(R)) or amprenavir (Agenerase(R)).
By analyzing phenotypic and genotypic assay results from more than 1,000 HIV samples in ViroLogic`s proprietary database, Company researchers developed an improved, comprehensive scoring system for interpreting genotypic results. ViroLogic identified known and new mutations responsible for resistance to lopinavir and demonstrated that cross-resistance between lopinavir and amprenavir may be more common than previously believed. The study also found that HIV viruses containing a low number of protease mutations may retain susceptibility to lopinavir.
"These study findings indicate that for recently-approved drugs, genotypic interpretations of drug resistance may be incomplete or immature especially for drugs like Kaletra that require multiple mutations for clinically significant resistance to arise," said Andrew Zolopa, M.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine, Department of Infectious Diseases, Stanford University Medical Center. "Therefore, use of these drugs may be more appropriately guided by phenotypic testing, such as PhenoSense(TM) HIV."
Study Details
In the study, 1,418 unique HIV samples with reduced susceptibility to PIs and/or resistance-associated mutations from ViroLogic`s database of phenotypic and genotypic test results were used to develop improved rules for interpreting genotypes for lopinavir.
"Previous rules for interpreting HIV genotype for lopinavir were based on studies involving small numbers of patients participating in clinical trials, and few of the patients had been pre-treated with amprenavir," said Neil Parkin, Ph.D., Scientific Director of Research and Development at ViroLogic and first author of the clinical research article. "In our study, we expanded the genotypic analysis to patient samples from our large database, and we used the phenotypic clinical cut-off value in the analysis. By these methods, we were able to significantly improve the ability to predict whether a sample was resistant to lopinavir."
Commenting in an accompanying editorial that appeared in the same issue of AIDS, Dr. Zolopa emphasized that, "Testing for HIV resistance to anti-retroviral drugs is accepted as part of standard of care for HIV/AIDS patients in developed countries and the selection of therapeutic regimens depends on thorough monitoring of viral and patient parameters, including measurements of viral load, phenotypic and genotypic resistance to anti-retroviral agents, and CD4+ cells."

ViroLogic Announces First Quarter 2003 Financial Results
Company Reports 22 Percent Revenue Growth Driven By 45 Percent Increase in Patient Testing Over First Quarter of 2002; Lowers Net Loss
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., May 6, 2003 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- ViroLogic, Inc. (Nasdaq: VLGC) today reported financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2003.
The Company reported revenue of $7.0 million for the first quarter of 2003, an increase of 22 percent over revenue of $5.7 million for the same period in 2002. The growth is primarily attributable to the Company`s patient testing business, which rose to $5.3 million in sales in the first quarter of 2003 from $3.6 million in the first quarter of 2002, an increase of 45 percent.
Gross margin was 42 percent in the first quarter of 2003 compared to 38 percent reported during the same quarter last year. Operating costs and expenses for the first quarter of 2003 were $9.5 million, compared to $12.0 million for the same period in 2002. This decrease was driven by reductions in compensation and other expenses resulting from the Company`s business restructuring and workforce reduction in November 2002 and ongoing operational improvements, and was partially offset by higher costs associated with increased testing volume.
Net loss for the first quarter of 2003 was $2.5 million, or $0.09 per share, compared to a net loss of $6.1 million, or $0.29 per share, for the same period in 2002.
In the first quarter of 2003, the Company recorded a non-cash deemed dividend to preferred stockholders of $2.2 million resulting from a warrant exchange approved by the Company`s stockholders on February 4, 2003 relating to the sale of Series C convertible preferred stock, and recorded stock dividends to preferred stockholders of $0.5 million, resulting in net loss applicable to common stockholders of $0.18 per common share. In the first quarter of 2002, the Company recorded a non-cash deemed dividend to preferred stockholders of $2.9 million from the sale of Series B convertible preferred stock, and recorded stock dividends to preferred stockholders of $0.2 million, resulting in net loss applicable to common stockholders of $0.43 per common share.
The Company`s cash decreased by approximately $1.5 million in the first quarter of 2003 as compared to approximately $4.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2002. The majority of the cash savings realized from recent cost cutting measures are expected to continue throughout the year, although some quarterly fluctuation is anticipated due to the timing of certain annual expenses. The Company had $10.3 million of cash, restricted cash and short- term investments as of March 31, 2003.
