The Bank of England raised its key interest rate for the third successive policy meeting, taking borrowing costs back to their pre-pandemic level and warning the war in Ukraine may push inflation well above 8 per cent later this year.
The increase to 0.75 per cent was backed by eight of the bank’s nine policy makers, with Deputy Governor Jon Cunliffe voting for no change.
The move is the latest sign the U.K. is leading the way in a global tightening of monetary policy, and makes it first major central bank to bring rates back to the settings before the coronavirus hit.
But officials led by Governor Andrew Bailey tempered the outlook by saying that a further tightening of policy “might be” appropriate in the coming months, a softening from the wording in February, when they said such a move was “likely.” They also warned the squeeze on households incomes in the U.K. will be “materially larger” than feared just six weeks ago.

U.K. companies added to payrolls in November at a record pace and unemployment fell, figures that are almost certain to fuel concerns at the Bank of England that unsustainable inflation pressures are building in the labor market.
The Office for National Statistics data Tuesday suggest the end of the government’s job-supporting furlough program on Sept. 30 has done nothing to ease a chronic shortage of workers, which is forcing firms to raise wages and prices.
The BOE fears that a jump in inflation that it once regarded as “transitory” could prove more enduring if left unchecked.
Most investors bet that policy makers are unlikely to hike interest rates this week due to the threat posed by the omicron variant of Covid-19, which has produced some pressure on government to bring back furlough benefits for those who are out of a job. That may hold back the BOE from increasing interest rates until next year.
“The combination of a tight labor market and low unemployment evident in today’s data could on their own be sufficient to merit a rate rise under the Bank of England’s November guidance,” said Yael Selfin, chief economist at KPMG UK. “With the emergence of the omicron variant, we expect the MPC to unanimously hold off raising rates until next year.”

LONDON (dpa-AFX) - Die drohenden Kreditausfälle in der Corona-Krise haben der britischen Großbank Lloyds 2020 wie erwartet einen herben Gewinnrückgang eingebrockt. Unter dem Strich entfiel auf die Aktionäre ein Gewinn von 865 Millionen britischen Pfund (gut 1 Mrd Euro) und damit fast zwei Drittel weniger als ein Jahr zuvor, wie das Geldhaus am Mittwoch in London mitteilte. Im vierten Quartal lief es für Lloyds allerdings besser als von Analysten gedacht - auch weil der Immobilienmarkt auflebte und es staatliche Hilfen für Kreditnehmer gab.
Jetzt will die Bank ihren Aktionären wieder eine Dividende zahlen, nachdem sie die Ausschüttungen wegen der wirtschaftlichen Verwerfungen infolge der Pandemie zwischenzeitlich gestoppt hatte. Je Aktie soll es 57 Pence geben.
An der Börse kamen die Nachrichten gut an. Die Lloyds-Aktie gewann am Vormittag in London 2,2 Prozent auf gut 40 Pence. Damit ließ sie ihr Zwischenhoch von Ende November hinter sich und kostete nun wieder so viel wie zuletzt im März 2020.

Schon dreimal in 2020 zwischen 10 und 25 % abgeräumt
Da war der Markt aber auch volatiler
