Hydrogenics Expands Line of HyPM(R) Fuel Cell Power Modules

HyPM 7 and HyPM 65 particularly well-suited to growing opportunities in light mobility and backup power applications

TORONTO, Nov. 2, 2004 -- Hydrogenics Corporation (Nasdaq: HYGS; TSX: HYG), a designer and manufacturer of hydrogen and fuel cell systems, announced two additions to its HyPM(R) product line at this week`s 2004 Fuel Cell Seminar in San Antonio, Texas. The two additions are the HyPM 7 (kW) unit and the HyPM 65 (kW) unit, both with which the Company will strategically access additional early market opportunities that exhibit long-term potential, specifically in light mobility and backup power applications.

Last year, at the same event, the Company launched the newly commercialized design of its HyPM 10 fuel cell power module. To date, 26 units of the HyPM 10 have been shipped to a diversity of early-adopting markets, from light mobility to backup and auxiliary power. A new generation of the original HyPM 10 is also under development and will be re-released next year with an enhanced power rating of 13-14 kW.

"This new phase of power module commercialization is an exciting step for Hydrogenics," said Pierre Rivard, President and CEO of Hydrogenics. "Leveraging our heritage and strength in fuel cell testing, we have used the best verification tools to establish HyPM10`s performance and durability. Our test power modules, subjected to rigorous duty cycles, have now exceeded 4,500 hours of operation with over 5,600 stop-start cycles."

"These significant learnings have now been extended to the new members of our HyPM family, and together with the cost reductions that have been achieved over the last 12 months we are now able to engage new markets across a range of power requirements," added Rivard. "In addition to impressive performance and durability, the HyPM is easy to integrate into a wide variety of applications making it the `power module of choice` for OEMs and system integrators looking to introduce fuel cell technology into their products and projects."

Hydrogenics` line of HyPM power modules are integration-ready power generators that require only hydrogen fuel to produce DC electrical power. In addition to a fuel cell stack, the power module includes the associated components, subsystems and control software required to produce clean electricity. HyPM design offers system simplicity resulting in optimized controls for faster and smoother dynamic response. The unit`s standard low-pressure design results in fewer mechanical or moving parts, lower noise, reduced weight and enhanced efficiency compared to competitors` pressurized engines.

In its first year of commercialization the HyPM 10 has conclusively proven its versatility for a range of customer applications. Complete successful integrations are being reported by customers including:

      - Quantum Technologies` recently announced delivery of a fuel
cell-powered military vehicle to the U.S. Army TARDEC-NAC (National
      Automotive Center)
      - SunLine Services Group`s successful integration into an APU on board a
Class 8 transport trailer also under a U.S. Army NAC contract
      - John Deere`s integration of HyPM 10 in their next generation fuel cell
      powered commercial work vehicles
      - An integration into a `low-signature` generator set for Raytheon
Integrated Defense Systems, under a product development contract for
      the U.S. military
      - In Mie Prefecture, Japan, the integration of HyPM 10 into a backup
power system as part of a demonstration program led by ITOCHU
      Corporation.
      - The integration of two HyPM 10 power modules for range extension in a
low speed battery-hybrid bus carrying out daily operations at Hawaii`s
Hickam Air Force Base, an excellent working example of how HyPM modules
can be configured in series to meet higher power requirements.

Before year-end, customers will take delivery of the new HyPM 7 and HyPM 65 modules for integration in a turf equipment application and in airport ground support vehicles, respectively.

HyPM`s versatility has also been further demonstrated through a technology initiative this year at Hydrogenics that has successfully married HyPM fuel cell technology with ultracapacitors in a hybrid electric powertrain, resulting in enhanced performance, reduced cost and substantially extended range. At the Fuel Cell Seminar`s ride and drive exhibit, Hydrogenics is exhibiting their hybrid technology in a neighborhood electric vehicle powered by a HyPM 7 power module integrated with a bank of ultracapacitors. HyPM hybrid configurations have become standard design architecture at Hydrogenics, with proprietary energy management technology adaptable to a variety of applications and duty cycles.

Rivard continues, "It`s very gratifying to take stock of the past year like this and realize the progress we have made in HyPM commercialization, especially as we see the price of crude oil hit an all-time high. We know the importance of making the right investment of resources in product development at this critical stage in the game, and of engaging a portfolio of early-adopting markets to gain a first-mover advantage. In November last year, we were confident we were on the right path in our product and market approach and now, a full year later, we are more convinced than ever."

Certain of Stuart Energy`s principal shareholders and all of its directors and officers holding in the aggregate approximately 37% of the outstanding common shares of Stuart Energy have irrevocably agreed to accept the Offer and tender their Stuart Energy common shares under the Offer.

In anticipation of the mailing of the Offer and the incorporation by reference of the Stuart Energy financial statements in the Hydrogenics` take- over bid circular, Stuart Energy announced today that it has filed with applicable securities regulatory authorities amended audited consolidated financial statements for the fiscal years ended March 31, 2004 and March 31, 2003. The amended statements reflect conforming changes for the adoption of certain accounting principles set out in CICA Handbook Section 3110 related to Asset Retirement Obligations implemented retroactively on April 1, 2004. The adoption of this change in accounting policy did not have a material impact on Stuart Energy`s financial results. These conforming changes have resulted in an increase in the net loss for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2004 of CDN$0.2 million from CDN$37.4 million to CDN$37.6 million and for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2003 of CDN$0.1 million from CDN$34.1 million to CDN$34.2 million. The loss per share for both fiscal years remains unaffected.

      Hi,

      es wird immer klarer:
      Alternative Energien werden Wirklichkeit.

2005 INVESTMENT OUTLOOK -- THE BEST PLAYS

      Alternative Energy Gets Real
Pricey oil and gas are heating up industrial interest in renewable sources

Renewable energy is booming. The use of solar power has been growing by more than 30% a year and, except for a hiccup in 2004 -- when Congress delayed renewing a tax credit -- so has wind power. Ethanol is heading for record production levels. And there`s no end in sight, given high oil and gas prices, an increasing number of government mandates and incentives, and the first real steps toward tackling global warming. Clean Edge Inc., a research and strategy consultant, predicts that the total clean-energy market will grow to $92 billion by 2013, about seven times its current size of $13 billion. "The investment community is starting to see real opportunities," says Ron Pernick, co-founder of Clean Edge. Advertisement

But buyer beware: Many of the leading companies supplying the technology to produce renewable energy still aren`t profitable. Often the pros are divided on just which are the leading companies. In fact, today`s renewable business is reminiscent of the computer industry in the early 1980s, "when no one knew who the winners would be," says Carsten Henningsen, chairman of Portfolio 21, a mutual fund that invests in environmentally conscious companies. That`s why many analysts and fund managers recommend investing in a basket of companies. "People should try to pick companies positioned to be winners and get enough of them," says Henningsen.

Wind might produce the biggest winners. A U.S. tax credit of 1.8 cents per kilowatt-hour is in place until 2006, and 19 states now require electricity producers to generate part of their power from green sources. Energy information and services company Platts, like BusinessWeek part of The McGraw-Hill Companies (MHP ), expects that most of the new sources will be wind. One beneficiary could be Denmark`s Vestas Wind Systems, the world`s biggest turbine manufacturer, which is listed in Copenhagen and trades over the counter in the U.S. "It is profitable, and there is more certainty and a more favorable political climate surrounding wind than solar or hydrogen," says Henningsen.

Fuel-cell companies are also catching the eye of investors. Their stocks are way down from the speculative peaks of a few years ago, but their products are finally becoming a compelling alternative to diesel-powered backup generators, says Walter Nasdeo, managing director of New York-based Ardour Capital Investments LLC. And they hold the promise of clean, efficient, hydrogen-powered cars, provided costs come down. Nasdeo is bullish on FuelCell Energy Inc., which he expects to reach $17.50 in a year, from $8.45 now.

A buy-and-hold strategy combined with some selective trading may be the best strategy for cashing in on the alternative-energy boom. "If [FuelCell Energy] goes to $14 or $15, you should take a little profit, then wait until [it] pulls back and buy some more," says Nasdeo. Eventually, he expects one of the renewable energy stocks to hit it big. In addition to FuelCell Energy, Nasdeo sees potential in Evergreen Solar (ESLR ), which makes solar cells; American Superconductor (AMSC ), which makes highly efficient superconducting wire and power-regulation devices; and two other fuel-cell makers, Hydrogenics (HYGS ) and Plug Power (PLUG ) .

Portfolio 21`s Henningsen also sees opportunities now to buy companies with beaten-down stocks. His own holdings: Vestas; fuel-cell makers Ballard Power Systems and Plug Power; and IMPCO Technologies (IMCO ) , which focuses on devices for car engines that use alternative fuels. After a fall for these stocks in 2004, "now may be the time to buy," he says.

If investors don`t have the time or stomach to juggle a portfolio of individual stocks, they could buy into a fund that specializes in renewable-energy stocks. An interesting choice is the WilderHill Clean Energy Index, set to debut in early 2005. It`s the brainchild of Robert J. Wilder, who put together an index of clean energy stocks five years ago as a hobby. It now includes everything from fuel-cell companies to suppliers of carbon fiber for turbine blades and makers of hydrogen. The index soared during the tech boom, plunged, and is now up 26% since August. "There are about 40 representative stocks -- and any one of them might do well," says Wilder. In other words, with a big enough basket, renewable energy could charge up any portfolio.

Hydrogenics Cuts 15 Percent of Workers As Part of Stuart Energy Integration

NEW YORK (AP) -- Hydrogenics Corp., an Ontario-based maker of fuel cell automated test stations, said Friday that, as part of the initial phase of its integration of Stuart Energy Systems Corp., the company will immediately cut 15 percent of its combined workforce.
The job cuts primarily affect employees from both Mississauga, Ontario operations.

"One of the key rationales for the acquisition of Stuart Energy was the opportunity to realize annualized cost savings of about $8 million through reductions in workforce, the consolidation of facilities and streamlining of corporate overhead and public company costs," said Pierre Rivard, president and CEO of Hydrogenics.

The company said Stuart Energy employees have started to relocate to their new workplace, and full relocation is expected by the end of February.

Hydrogenics shares rose 19 cents, or 4.6 percent, to $4.25 in morning trading on the Nasdaq National Market.

      GM, Hydrogenics Demonstrate No-emission, No-compromise Hydrogen-powered Forklift
      2/1/2005 10:48:15 AM

OSHAWA, Ontario, Feb 01, 2005 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- General Motors of Canada Limited and Hydrogenics Corporation today demonstrated that commercially viable hydrogen-powered industrial vehicles are closer to the market than many people think.

Hydrogenics is leading a consortium of partners to develop, demonstrate and move fuel cell-powered forklifts toward commercialization. This is the first time a fuel cell vehicle supported by an onsite hydrogen fuelling station has been demonstrated at a GM facility. This project is being partially funded with a $1.45 million contribution from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC). SDTC is a foundation created by the Government of Canada that operates a $550 million fund to support the development and demonstration of clean technologies that address issues of climate change, clean air, water and soil quality.

"This trial of hydrogen-powered forklift trucks at GM`s car plant in Oshawa is just one example of the steps GM and its partners are taking as we head down the road to the hydrogen economy," said David Paterson, vice- president, corporate and environmental affairs, GM Canada. "Demonstration projects like this are critical to the development of fuel cell technology. With predictable duty cycles, lift trucks are an ideal application from which to learn, and a large plant like ours, where external elements are not a factor, is an ideal place in which to conduct a trial like this."

      Energise Your Portfolio

      By Tim Beyers (TMFMileHigh)
      February 2, 2005

Of all the available renewable energy sources, hydrogen just might have the worst reputation. And it`s no wonder. You remember the Hindenburg, right? But it`s a bad rap.

Hydrogen is the simplest and most abundant element in the universe. Fuel cells capture the chemical energy it generates to create electricity, and with no fiery explosions involved in the process. Nope, instead of smog-producing smoke, fuel cell-powered autos would emit nothing more than distilled water. No wonder the president made fuel cells a cornerstone of his 2003 State of the Union address.

Since then, the Feds have promised $1.2 billion to create renewable energy sources based on hydrogen. That`s a major commitment that has attracted equally major interest from private enterprises. More than 1,000 companies had been involved in creating hydrogen fuel cells by the end of 2003, and growth continues unabated. According to researcher Freedonia Group, the total fuel cell market will reach $1.1 billion by 2008. BCC Research estimates more than 25% annual growth in portable hydrogen fuel cells.

Fortunately for investors, many of the companies pushing hydrogen-based products are public, but many are also early in their development. That`s primarily a function of the nascent nature of the market and the costs involved in creating fuel cell alternatives. For example, prototype fuel-cell powered autos created by Honda (NYSE: HMC) and Toyota (NYSE: TM) could fetch $100,000 or more today. Prices are expected to come down dramatically in the next five years, creating a mass market from which today`s fuel cell pioneers would see enormous benefits.

Among the list of the more promising are Ballard Power (Nasdaq: BLDP), Distributed Energy Systems (Nasdaq: DESC), FuelCell Energy (Nasdaq: FCEL), Hydrogenics (Nasdaq: HYGS), and Plug Power (Nasdaq: PLUG).

Hydrogenics Provides Mid-Year Update on Light Mobility Initiatives
Friday July 29, 8:11 am ET
Multi-faceted deployments of HyPM(TM) power module technology define path to commercialization

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 29, 2005-- HYDROGENICS CORPORATION (TSX:HYG - News; NASDAQ:HYGS - News), reports that the Company`s light mobility program, undertaken two years ago as a key strategic priority, is achieving desired outcomes in the areas of targeted early adopter engagement, focused product development, and potential distribution channels.

"We have made great strides in our HyPM technology, especially in the last eighteen months, making it a product of choice for a wide range of light mobility applications and markets," comments Pierre Rivard, President and CEO. "Our strategy is to seed the `markets that matter` - these are the markets where we present a strong value proposition for the early adoption of hydrogen and fuel cell technology. Inasmuch as customers typically start with small orders of one of two units as they test the technology and the value proposition, we believe many of the customers we are working with today can materialize into substantial commercial opportunities tomorrow. This `pathway to profitability` model has been used very successfully by developers of new technologies in the past - we believe that Hydrogenics is the company that is going to do it for fuel cells."

Hydrogenics` primary light mobility initiative currently targets the development of fuel cell-ultracapacitor hybrid forklifts, specifically for 24 hour operations in indoor warehouse and manufacturing facilities. Hydrogenics believes that potential productivity improvements may lead to forklifts becoming one of the first viable markets to adopt fuel cell technology. Phase One of Hydrogenics` initiative, already complete, involved the successful deployment of two forklifts at GM Canada`s main car assembly plant in Oshawa. Phase Two is now preparing to get underway at a Fedex facility in the Toronto area. In addition to testing the technology in real-time operating conditions, user validation has been a central element of this project. Results of the complete two-phase project will be developed into a white paper to be published later this year.

"Providing end-users with fuel cell products that provide better solutions than what they currently use will drive market adoption," continues Rivard. "By focusing on key deployments with targeted end-users, we are validating the value proposition and the technology while we market our products. This is what we call creating `market pull`, not `market push`. So far, user endorsement of our fuel cell technology has been very positive and this is motivating us more than ever to get the costs down because we know there`s a market there when we do."

Other light mobility activity over the last 6 months has contributed to potential commercial traction across a range of applications. Each of these initial market opportunities has excellent potential for expansion in the short to mid term.

      - delivery and road-permitting of Purolator`s first zero-emission, fuel cell powered vehicle. The vehicle, equipped with a Hydrogenics 65 kW HyPM in a battery hybrid configuration, will commence in-service trials this summer as part of Purolator`s "greening of the fleet" initiative.

      - preparation of Toronto`s ExPlace to receive a small fleet of next-generation fuel cell-powered John Deere Gators to integrate into their regular grounds operations. This will be the first deployment of John Deere vehicles for end-user validation. Deere continues on a progressive product development track with a recent follow-on order for two HyPM units bringing the total to nine.

      - unveiling of Hydrogenics` HyPM hybrid package in The Toro Company`s proof-of-concept fuel cell hybrid greensmower. This is believed to be one of the earliest applications for fuel cell technology in grounds equipment.

      - completion and demonstration of a fuel cell hybrid midi-bus to the state of North Rhine Westphalia. German T?V road certification is in progress and expected to be complete in the third quarter. This fuel cell battery hybrid design has the capacity to at least double the range achievable by batteries alone. Constricted European city cores have a need for this type of bus technology platform.

      - engagement of two world-leading OEMs of small electric vehicles - REVA Electric Car Company (Maini Industrial Group, India, www.revaindia.com) and Th!nk Nordic (Norway, www.think.no). Initial HyPM sales for prototype vehicles are being secured at this time. The REVA initiative plans for a small fleet of vehicles as an eco-tourism pilot project launched by the Indian Oil Corporation, and the Th!nk Nordic project plans for additional vehicles over the next two years for various demonstration projects, including Norway`s Hynor initiative.

      - Demonstration initiatives launched in 2005 included Hydrogenics` sponsorship of University of Waterloo`s Challenge X team as they integrate a HyPM power module into the drive train of a GM Equinox vehicle. The team took top honors for their design stage deliverables at a recent Challenge X competition.

HyPM technology is also proving its versatility in vehicle auxiliary power (APU) applications. Two recent APU projects that Hydrogenics has been involved in, both funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, include:

      - The provision of a 2X10 kW HyPM to SunLine Transit Agency for integration into an APU in a modified standard Class-8 Peterbilt truck. The truck recently made a trip across the US, demonstrating a significant overall reduction of fossil fuel consumption.

      - The provision of a electrolyser-fuel cell APU, to be deployed on board a Stryker Light Armored Vehicle (LAV). The APU will extend the LAV`s silent watch capabilities beyond those of conventional APU technologies.

The military has also started to apply hydrogen and fuel cell technology to certain propulsion applications. Hydrogenics has provided HyPM fuel cell power modules for two fuel cell hybrid projects, a shuttle bus and a step van, at Hickam Air Force base in Hawaii.

"The versatility of our HyPM power module products has enabled us to engage in a number of diverse fuel cell projects that each benefit from reduced emissions, reduced noise, increased efficiency and the potential for increased productivity," summarizes Rivard. "Through these varied initiatives we are creating something very valuable to our future success - we are creating position. These early-adopting markets of today are just the first step on the path to global solutions for energy security and sustainability. Hydrogenics is a leader on that path."

Hydrogenics Reports Second Quarter 2005 Results
Revenues of $6.3 million and sequential reduction in quarterly cash operating costs of $2.6 million or 26%
MISSISSAUGA, Ontario--Aug. 4, 2005-- Hydrogenics Corporation is reporting second quarter and six month unaudited results. Results are reported in U.S. dollars and are prepared in accordance with Canadian generally accepted accounting principles.

"Six month revenues surpassed full year revenues for 2004, due in large part to record revenues set last quarter," comments Pierre Rivard, President and CEO. "Although our revenues decreased from last quarter owing to uneven shipping dates from quarter to quarter, we are averaging well and our backlog remains strong. New and pending orders are tracking with our geographic and product strategies, a sign, we believe, that the combined business portfolio gained through our Stuart Energy acquisition is bearing fruit."

"We believe that the increase in revenues, combined with synergies derived from the Stuart Energy acquisition, will accelerate our path to profitability," continues Rivard. "All in all, we believe we are delivering on the commitment we made at the beginning of the year to achieve renewed financial performance for our shareholders by applying discipline and sound business fundamentals."

Results for the second quarter of 2005 compared to the second quarter of 2004

Revenues were $6.3 million, a 76% increase from $3.6 million, supported by our acquisition of Stuart Energy. Gross profit expressed as a percentage of revenues was 17.1% (29.8% in 2004) and reflects a heavier weighting of hydrogen generation products. Cash operating costs, a non-GAAP measure, defined as selling, general and administrative and research and product development expenses, exclusive of integration and severance costs were $7.0 million, a 14% increase from $6.2 million in 2004 and reflecting the incremental costs associated with Stuart Energy`s operations. Net loss was $9.5 million, an increase of 12% from $8.5 million in 2004.

Results for the second quarter of 2005 compared to the first quarter of 2005

Revenues were $6.3 million, a 44% decrease primarily due to timing of deliveries. Gross profit expressed as a percentage of revenues was 17.1%, an increase of 8.1% due to the absence of $1.3 million of work in progress adjustments recognized in the first quarter of 2005. Cash operating costs were $7.0 million, a decrease 26%, or $2.4 million, resulting from the implementation of our integration plan. Net loss was $9.5 million, a decrease of 15%, or $1.7 million, primarily as a result of lower cash operating costs.

Results for the six month period ended June 30, 2005 compared to the six month period ended June 30, 2004

Revenues were $17.6 million, a 130% increase primarily due to the acquisition of Stuart Energy in the first quarter of 2005. Gross profit, expressed as a percentage of revenues, was 11.9%, a decrease of 17.9% due to a $1.3 million increase in work-in-progress related to the acquisition of Stuart Energy, in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, and a higher percentage of hydrogen generation revenues, which historically have generated lower gross margins. Cash operating costs were $16.4 million, a $4.8 million or 41% increase. Net loss was $20.7 million, a $4.8 million or 30% increase from $15.9 million, primarily as a result of lower gross margins and higher cash operating costs.

We had $97.7 million in cash and cash equivalents and short-term investments as at June 30, 2005. The $8.1 million sequential quarterly decrease in cash and cash equivalents and short-term investments is attributable to:

      - our loss before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization and integration costs of $6.2 million;

      - integration costs of $0.3 million;

      - net changes in non-cash working capital of $1.5 million; and

      - capital expenditures of $0.1 million.

      Order backlog
Our order backlog as at June 30, 2005 was $19.1 million as follows:
      Q1 Orders Product/Service Q2
      Backlog Received Delivered Backlog
      ---------------------------------------------------------------------
      ---------------------------------------------------------------------
      Generation $ 11.0 $ 3.0 $ 1.7 $ 12.3
      Power 2.6 - 1.1 1.5
      Test 4.9 3.9 3.5 5.3
      ---------------------------------------------------------------------
      Total $ 18.5 $ 6.9 $ 6.3 $ 19.1
      ---------------------------------------------------------------------
      ---------------------------------------------------------------------
We expect to substantially deliver this order backlog in 2005.

      Second Quarter Highlights

      Progress on markets:

      - In April, we announced a major three-year project to lead a consortium of partners in the deployment of a Wind-Hydrogen Village project on Prince Edward Island, Canada, to demonstrate the central role that hydrogen and fuel cells are anticipated to play in future integrated energy systems based on the increased use of clean renewable energy sources.

      - In April, we completed the development and integration of a fuel cell hybrid bus for demonstration to the State of North-Rhine Westphalia in Germany. Profiled at the 2005 Hannover Fair, this `midi` bus platform is particularly suited for shuttle bus uses and other applications requiring a smaller scale bus, such as in constricted European downtown cores where emission regulations are becoming more prevalent. Certification for street use in Germany is nearing completion, which is an important step towards commercialization.

      - In May, we secured a follow-on order from John Deere for two HyPM power modules to deploy into next generation fuel cell Gator vehicles. A total of four fuel cell-powered Gators are now being deployed into the hands of market end-users.

      - In June, American Power Conversions (APC) (NASDAQ:APCC - News), a leading provider of backup power systems for critical data networks with over 15 million customers worldwide, launched their InfraStruXure™ with Integrated Fuel Cells System product to meet customer needs for extended backup run-time. We have now delivered five of the initial 25 units ordered by APC and anticipate the majority of this order will be delivered in 2005.

      - During the quarter, we carried out diagnostic tests and analysis following our successful fuel cell-powered forklift pilot demonstration at GM`s car assembly plant in Oshawa, Ontario, and are implementing the second phase of this fuel cell-powered forklift deployment with Fedex Canada.

      Progress on products and technology:

      - In June, we launched our HyPM XR10 rack-mountable fuel cell power module for backup power applications in parallel with APC`s product launch at a major industry conference in New Orleans.

      - Following our acquisition of Stuart Energy, we continue to streamline and harmonize our technology roadmap, making significant improvements in product capabilities and achieving important milestones to reduce product costs.

      Progress on corporate matters:

      - In connection with the integration of Stuart Energy, we reduced our cash operating costs by $2.6 million on a sequential quarterly basis and have now achieved annualized cost savings in the order of $10.0 million.

      Hydrogenics kooperiert mit Hitachi Zosen

      31.03.2005

Market Pulse: Citigroup sees opportunity for fuel cells in backup power
Wednesday August 24, 12:06 pm ET
      By Michael Baron

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Citigroup Investment Research issued a bullish call on fuel cells Wednesday, saying it sees a large opportunity for the products in providing backup power in wireless telecom and other markets. The firm said the cost of fuel cells needs to decline, however, to set the growth curve in motion and that the energy tax credit could act as a catalyst. It sees the total market for fuel cell backup power at about 160,000 units a year, a figure it says represents roughly $2.5 billion in potential sales. Citigroup believes Plug Power , up 2.2% to $6.42, and Hydrogenics , rising 3.2% to $3.55 as the largest beneficiaries of this trend. Other alternative fuel technology companies in rally mode were Capstone Turbine , surging 25% to $3.89, Beacon Energy , advancing 11.4% to $5.26, Millennium Cell , adding 16.3% to $2.22, and Mechanical Technology gaining 8% to $3.05.

      Citigroup empfiehlt Brennstoffzellen

      24.08.05 18:30

Hydrogenics Awarded German Road Certification for Public Transit Vehicle
Thursday December 1, 7:00 am ET
Fuel Cell Powered "Midi Bus" now available for campus settings and city centers with stringent emissions regulations

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 1, 2005--Hydrogenics Corporation (TSX:HYG - News; NASDAQ:HYGS - News) today announced that Germany`s TUV Rheinland Group (www.tuv.com), a leading international technical service provider, awarded Hydrogenics` fuel cell `Midi Bus` road certification, allowing it to be put into full public transit service in Germany. The certification stipulates that the bus meets all required safety requirements and operates in accordance with all regulations as they apply for use by public transit authorities.

The hybrid power architecture was developed by Hydrogenics, on a Technobus Gulliver midi bus platform, with financial support from the European Union and the German state of North-Rhine Westphalia. This government-initiated project was undertaken to address the need for light duty transit vehicles capable of operating in urban and other environmental sensitive areas without the emissions typically associated with traditional diesel buses, or the limitations associated with battery-powered buses. The fuel cell hybrid system uses an integrated HyPM® 10 (kW) power module to effectively triple the range compared to the existing battery powertrain, improving performance and profitability for transit authorities without a corresponding increase in pollutants.

"Our fuel cell power module strategy is two-pronged," said Pierre Rivard, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hydrogenics. "First off, we work with OEMs interested in integrating our HyPM power modules into their products and, secondly, we develop market driven end-user products incorporating our power modules. By applying this latter strategy we are able to more aggressively drive our commercialization efforts than is sometimes possible through a pure OEM sales strategy. In the case of the Midi Bus, we believe this initiative will create the kind of interest that will compel bus manufacturers to become more directly involved with us in the market development of this product, not only in Germany but in other jurisdictions as well," added Rivard.

The European Union recently announced its upcoming HyCHAIN project which will provide meaningful incentives to transit authorities to operate these zero emission buses as part of their urban fleets. Hydrogenics is now marketing the fuel cell Midi Bus - the only certified `reduced scale` fuel cell bus on the market today - to transit authorities in Germany and other countries in Europe. Capable of transporting up to 22 people, the Midi Bus is targeted towards historical sites and city centers, as well as in industrial or municipal campus settings, such as fairs, exhibitions and airports, where stringent emissions regulations apply. Today there are approximately 600 battery-powered electric buses deployed in such settings in numerous European cities.

Further details of the Midi Bus can be found under Projects on the Hydrogenics web site www.hydrogenics.com.

Hydrogenics Supplies Hydrogen Generator to Russian Utility

Standards expertise and temperature durability key to sale

Hydrogenics Corporation (TSX:HYG) (NASDAQ:HYGS), a designer and manufacturer of hydrogen and fuel cell systems, announced today that the company has supplied an onsite electrolysis-based HySTAT-A Hydrogen Plant to OAO NSCHK, a state-owned utility in Novorsibirsk, Russia.

The high-purity hydrogen produced by the 240Nm3/hr hydrogen generator will be used in the chemical processes used in this nuclear power plant. Installation and commissioning is scheduled for Spring, 2006.

"This installation in Siberia needed a hydrogen generator that could function in the most severe weather conditions. Our HySTAT unit will operate in temperatures as low as - 40 degrees C," said Pierre Rivard, Hydrogenics President and Chief Executive Officer. "Hydrogenics is one of a few suppliers that can provide a hydrogen generator that meets specific Russian standards and our experience with global codes and standards played a major role in this sale."

OAO NSCHK chose a Hydrogenics HySTAT-A Hydrogen Plant in an outdoor housing instead of investing the time to obtain the approvals necessary for constructing their own hydrogen plant facility. The HySTAT-A is fully automated with remote control and can produce both hydrogen and oxygen on a continuous basis, with the production rate meeting real-time process requirements. The generator is designed to operate within an ambient temperature range of + 40 degrees C to - 40 degrees C.

Bush Speech to Outline Energy Alternatives By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer
      2 hours, 57 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Trying to calm anxieties about soaring energy costs, President Bush is using his State of the Union address this week to focus on a package of energy proposals aimed at bringing fuel-saving technologies out of the lab and into use.

In Bush`s vision, drivers will stop at hydrogen stations and fill their fuel-cell cars with the pollution-free fuel. Or they would power their engines with ethanol made from trash or corn. More Americans would run their lights at home on solar power.

Bush has been talking about these ideas since his first year in office. Proposals aimed at spreading the use of ethanol, hydrogen and renewable fuels all were part of the energy bill that he signed into law in August, but that hasn`t eased Americans` worries about high fuel prices.

Americans were hit with the biggest jump in energy prices in 15 years in 2005, and worries about the cost of gas and heating oil have damped spirits about the economy despite other recent encouraging signs.

Add in the unrest in the Middle East, and energy becomes a major problem for the president to address Tuesday night.

"I agree with Americans who understand being hooked on foreign oil as an economic problem and a national security problem," Bush said in a recent interview with CBS.

Eight in 10 Americans surveyed earlier this month by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press said gasoline prices were a big problem.

Home heating fuel and health care were the other major economic concerns. It`s not a coincidence that Bush will spend much of his State of the Union reassuring Americans that he has a plan to address energy and medical costs.

House Democrats sought to take the luster off Bush`s speech with a television commercial that accuses the president and Republicans of tilting their policies toward the pharmaceutical, oil and investment industries. It shows lawmakers cheering Bush`s words from three previous State of the Union addresses, and asks: "What Special Interest Will the Republican Congress Rubberstamp This Time?"

Officials said the commercial would air only once, on Fox, in the run-up to Bush`s speech, making it more like a guerilla-style attack on the GOP than an attempt to mold public opinion.

Bush told CBS that he does not support a big raise in the gas tax, as others have proposed. Instead, he is looking for tax breaks that encourage new technologies, which is popular with farmers, with industry and with consumers of those products.

"We have got to wean ourselves off hydrocarbons, oil," Bush explained. "And the best way, in my judgment, to do it is to promote and actively advance new technologies so that we can drive — have different driving habits."

For example, he said, the federal government could push more widespread use of corn-based ethanol and spur production from other sources.

Almost all ethanol produced now comes from corn. Although non-corn ethanol from sources like grasses, wood chips and even garbage is widely talked about, a practical and cost-effective process for producing it appears years away.

Bush noted to CBS that about 4.6 million cars on the road in the United States can run on ethanol. The fuel works in more than 30 models, including General Motor`s Yukon, Chevrolet`s Silverado and Ford`s Taurus. However, almost all drivers of those vehicles outside the Corn Belt fill up with gasoline.

Automakers and environmentalists are also excited about the prospect of fuel cells, which would run on hydrogen that would only emit water instead of gas fumes. But fuel cell vehicles are extremely expensive to produce and lack an infrastructure of fueling stations to make them viable. The government has said it hopes hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will be available in car showrooms by 2020.

When it comes to alternative ways to power homes and businesses, very little U.S. electricity now comes from renewables such as wind, solar, geothermal, wood and waste. But that share is expected to increase as the price of fossil fuel rises.

Bush will Amerikas „Abhängigkeit vom Öl” stoppen

Hydrogen technology comes out of the shadows
JOHN LORINC, Globe and Mail, 31.03.06

Not too many years ago, partisans proclaimed that the combustion engine's grip on the economy and the environment was about to be broken by clean hydrogen technology. Accordingly, shares of hydrogen fuel cell maker Ballard Power Systemswhose slogan was "Power to change the world"soared.

Half a decade later, the mass-market hydrogen-powered cars and buses that were supposed to be on the road by now are nowhere to be seen. Even though conventional fuel prices have pressed steadily up, Ballard shares trade at less than a 10th of their millennial value. Scratch one revolution.

But hydrogen visionaries can take hope. The revolution isn't dead; it has just moved to a new address, a company that answers to the description of the Anti-Ballard.

In early 2005, said company, Hydrogenics Inc., started shipping 10-kilowatt fuel cell stacks to American Power Conversion, a power-system manufacturer. Though the order wasn't huge (just 25 units), its fulfilment was still a watershed moment: In an industry long overdue on results, here was a company that had found an actual commercial application for its fuel cells. Besides supplying the juice for APC's backup generators, Hydrogenics is also creating fuel cell forklifts and building refuelling stations for the hydrogen-powered delivery fleets of the future.

The company's principals, CEO Pierre Rivard and chief technology officer Joseph Cargnelli, admit that such gear won't solve the climate-change conundrum. "We don't go for home runs, the one shot that redefines the world," says Rivard, an understated individual with an aversion to adjectives. "We have a very different DNA than Ballard. We're built for sustainability."

Backup generators look like a sustainable business because they're a niche where fuel cell technology has some advantages not available on the open road. Worldwide, corporate spending on backup power for computer systems amounts to $5 billion to $10 billion a year (all currency in U.S. dollars). Fuel cell firms are getting some of that cash not because purchasers are gaga for things green, but because fuel cell units can be installed inside office buildings (unlike diesel systems) and are more powerful and long-lived than are battery-powered generators. These are strong selling points in the wake of the costly disruptions of the 2003 blackout and hurricane Katrina.

That said, the holy grail of full commercialization is not at hand. Hydrogenics is still struggling to close the price-point chasm that bedevils the hydrogen sector. And the company's recent stock chart, like Ballard's, makes for mighty fine downhill skiing. The firm racked up $77 million in cumulative net losses between 2002 and 2004.

But Hydrogenics has lately begun recording revenues that don't derive from the traditional industry teats: government grants and faint-hope demonstration projects. Based on trailing 12-month results, the company, as of last Sept. 30, was generating significant amounts from operations, reporting a $37.4-million loss on $37.2 million in revenues.

It's hardly the stuff of investor fantasies, but it's refreshingly real in a hype-addled sector that vaporized most of its goodwill (and almost all of its billions in market capitalization) after burning through hundreds of millions in shareholder equity in recent years.

Even hydrogen skeptics endorse Hydrogenics' focus on niche markets. "There's a fairly good likelihood, given reasonable cost controls, that the company will make itself profitable in the next few years," says Research Capital Corp. technology and hardware analyst Jon Hykawy. "They're matching their products to the industries they're going after. . .. I can't say the same for Ballard. They're going to continue to burn cash by going after the automotive market."

There's a parallel here to the e-commerce industry: On the morning-after of a market bender, a woozy sector awakens to the fact that it must address real business needs. "Many of these companies in clean energy have to pick their spots and figure out how to serve their customers well," says Wal van Lierop, a Vancouver venture capitalist specializing in green energy. For the fuel cell business, "The holy grail is [still] the transportation sector," says Nick Beck, science and technology director for the fuel cell arm of Natural Resources Canada, a federal ministry. "But it's generally recognized that other markets will come along before then."

Hydrogenics' mississauga HQ looks like a huge engineering lab. Young guys with iron pinky rings, clipboards and protective eyewear wander among the test and production stations. Over there is a disembowelled bus. Here are a pair of half-finished portable hydrogen generation unitsshipping-container-sized contraptions brimming with tubes, cylinders and control panels. Two John Deere forklifts, proudly wearing the scuff marks of a recently completed test run, are parked in a corner.

Cargnelli is a stocky, tech-talking 36-year-old who became enamoured of fuel cells when he was an engineering undergrad in the mid-1980s. "There was a romanticism about it," he says. "You could synthesize a zero-emission fuel from hydrogen." Lately, he has overseen the company's campaign to standardize its production methods and find those elusive cost savings that still separate fuel cells from traditional technologies. Last year, Hydrogenics reorganized itself into three operating divisionsfuel cells, testing and hydrogen generation. Each is a profit centre expected to stand on its own. Head office has been adding sales and marketing executives; Cargnelli recruited engineers to ensure that the firm's precious trickle of sales turns into a torrent. "Now we're refining the product," he says, a bit ruefully. "We're not in basic research mode any more."

Which is a big shift. The company traces its roots to U of T's graduate engineering school, where Rivard and Cargnelli met in the early 1990s. U of T had had a leading fuel cell research program since the mid-1970s, guided by one of the pioneers in the field, David Scott. As Cargnelli recalls, Scott ended every lecture with a little plug for fuel cells. Both students were captivated by the romance of tapping into a clean, abundant energy source that would rid the world of its dependence on fossil fuel and the despotic regimes that control much of it.

The heady promises made for fuel cells in the latter 1990s recalled the way nuclear engineers talked about reactors in the 1960s. Take an inexhaustible supply of virtually cost-free fuel. Add zero pollution. The sum is a bright future. All this thanks to a simple principle: If you can capture the energy thrown off when hydrogen and oxygen combine, you've got power generation whose only byproduct is water vapour. A particularly effective method is to blow hydrogen gas and oxygen over an etched graphite plate sheathed in a cellophane-like wrapper known as a proton exchange membrane, which collects surplus electrons and turns them into a current. The plates can be as small as a matchbox or as large as a suitcase. When several are bolted together into something that looks like a high-tech accordion, you've got a fuel cell stack.

But the process is not necessarily green. The problem is getting and storing the hydrogen. One way of producing it is to peel the hydrogen molecules off natural gasan energy-intensive process known as "reforming" which depends, obviously, on fossil fuels and thus emits greenhouse gases.

That's the dirty method. The clean method involves running a current through water: Electrolysis creates hydrogen. If that electricity comes from a green source such as wind, solar or hydro, you've got a nifty way of storing renewable energy for future use.

Or so the theory goes. One of the riddles that has dogged the fuel cell industry's dream of zero-emission vehicles is how to store such a volatile gas. Traditional methods require heavy canisters or complicated processes that involve binding hydrogen to metal alloys. Fitting all this gear into a car, along with a fuel cell stack, runs up against expectations for cost- and space-effectiveness that car manufacturers and consumers will not easily renounce.

Even if that puzzle is solved, this one remains: Who's going to build a network of hydrogen refuelling stations if there's no critical mass of hydrogen-powered vehicles? And who's going to buy the vehicles if there's nowhere to juice them up?

Rivard and Cargnelli left grad school with visions of elegant solutions to such quandaries dancing in their heads. With Rivard's engineer neighbour, Boyd Taylor (who stayed with them until last year), they set up a small R&D firm over the machine shop owned by Cargnelli's family. Like all self-respecting engineers, they were fiddlers. As Cargnelli puts it, "When Pierre and I were at U of T, it was as if we would have rolling pins and roll the dough to make the product." But they also knew they had to run a business.

As it happened, they were in the right place at the right time. In the late '90s, governments and automakers were beginning to invest serious cash in fuel cell research. Tapping into a close-knit network of researchers, many of whom they'd met at U of T, Cargnelli et al. figured they could earn some money by testing fuel cells for other R&D firms. This service soon began to expandit's still almost a third of the businessand not incidentally taught Hydrogenics plenty about what did and didn't work. "We could take advantage of that knowledge," says Rivard. "It's a different approach than our competitors have taken."

In 1997, Daimler-Benz and Ford Motor Co. invested more than $1 billion in Ballard Power Systems. Huge federal technology grants followed. Auto-industry executives were promising mass-produced fuel cell vehicles by 2004prognostications that promised oodles of business for anyone involved in making fuel cells. It all got supercrazy in late 2000, when several Canadian fuel cell firms rushed out with IPOs, tapping into the investor frenzy swirling around Ballard.

Hydrogenics did not get hooked on Ottawa's huge technology loans, but it did join the IPO rush, raising $76 million on the Nasdaq and the TSX in 2000. Much of the money went into building bigger and better testing stations that could mimic the many variablesheat, cold, speed, etc.that fuel cell engines would face on the road. The company then teamed up with engineers at Dow Chemical to develop better methods for mass-producing fuel cell platesan engineering fix Cargnelli compares to the evolution of silicon chips. The two companies secured a number of jointly held process patents that have led to impressive productivity gains. Hydrogenics now stamps and seals plates more quickly, more cheaply and more consistently. "These are the types of advances that will bring down costs," says Cargnelli.

Among the companies going public in the fall of 2000 was Stuart Energy Systems Corp., another Mississauga-based hydrogen firm with links to U of T's engineering school. The company's aim was to create a new generation of electrolyzers and hydrogen fuelling stations. Investors, some of them big ones, noticed the upstarts: General Motors snapped up a quarter of Hydrogenics' shares; Stuarta company founded in 1948 that had made its name producing industrial hydrogen around the worldwas partly owned by Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing.

Then the hydrogen bubble burst. Ballard began its long slide, dragging down everyone in the sector. Hydrogenics' shares, which once traded north of $13, today languish at about $4. Of course, there is still plenty of public R&D money on offer on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border, as jurisdictions like California and British Columbia seed hydrogen-powered buses and futuristic "distributed energy" schemes such as "hydrogen highways." But Rivard was one of the first to recognize that his industry couldn't sail along indefinitely on promises, subsidies and stock-market euphoria. As chairman of the umbrella group Fuel Cells Canada, in 2002 he called for a sectoral shakeout. "Post-consolidation, you might see two, three, perhaps four larger-sized companies emerging. To me, that's very healthy."

Rivard soon took a dose of his own medicine. In 2003, Hydrogenics bought a rival testing firm in B.C. Meanwhile, Stuart bought a European competitor. Then, in late 2004, Hydrogenics ingested Stuart in a friendly share swap worth $155 million. The move gave Hydrogenics ongoing revenue sources: Stuart produced electrolyzers that are widely used in the chemical industry, as well as hydrogen refuelling stations. The deal helped stabilize Hydrogenics' balance sheet (and assuage investors) after a near meltdown in 2003. "An absolutely brilliant acquisition" is Research Capital analyst Hykawy's assessment.

Rivard and Cargnelli started poking around the forklift industry, which weighs in at $15 billion a year and growing, thanks to the proliferation of factories in China. Indeed, much of the fuel cell industry (as well as its patrons at Industry Canada) is now focused on forklifts, using a pitch to customers and investors that touts productivity ahead of environmentalism. Lead-acid batteries, the spiel goes, need to be changed every four to eight hours, tend to flag toward the end of a shift, and prompt health concerns among workers who change and recharge them. Fuel cell forklifts, by contrast, last longer, don't fade and can be refuelled in two minutes.

In test runs, fuel cell forklifts perform best in busy plants that work around the clock and have enough forklifts to justify the outlay for a refueller. When Hydrogenics ran trials at a FedEx distribution centre and the General Motors plant in Oshawa last year, GM placed just one service call. (GM and Hydrogenics have a development partnership for folklifts.)

As with most fuel cell technology, however, price-point remains a hurdle. Hykawy says a fuel cell battery for a forklift ranges from $40,000 to $80,000, compared with just a few thousand for a lead-acid model. (Hydrogenics won't disclose its own unit costs.) Those big numbers, moreover, don't include the acquisition of on-site fuelling stations, without which there's little point in investing in the forklifts. Hykawy remains unconvinced that the fuel cell forklifts represent enough of an improvement that they'll spur large-scale demand. "Everyone wants to play in [the forklift market] on the off chance it will work," he says. "When you're asking for significant price premiums, you'd better bring an attractive feature set."

"We're constantly designing out cost," responds Cargnelli, who explains that Hydrogenics engineers developed relatively cheap hybrid technology to provide extra juice when the forklifts have to hoist particularly heavy objects. (Hybrid cars are equipped with similar devices to help with acceleration.) He expects that Hydrogenics' forklift fuel cell stacks will be "on parity" with conventional batteries within 18 months. That forecast requires that the productivity improvements are factored in to overall capital and operating expensesan argument not unlike the one made for hybrid cars, which cost more up front but require less to run. Although he's cautious about forecasts, Rivard predicts that Hydrogenics will ship units this year.

Looking a bit further out, Hydrogenics has kept a foot in the on-road vehicle field, but not in the sexy market for green energy buses. Instead, in 2004, the company paired up with Purolator Courier Ltd. in a $3-million test of a fuel cell-powered van and an on-site refueller at the courier's Toronto distribution centre. (Hydrogenics has a development partnership on this front, with ChevronTexaco.)

On Purolator's part, the project stems from its desire to make its 3,000-strong fleet of urban vans more fuel-efficient and green. Director of national fleets Serge Viola says the test van has a range of about 110 to 120 kilometres a day and can travel up to 100 kilometres per hour, "which is all we wanted." Feedback from customers and couriers has been universally sunny, he adds. "It's amazing how many people want to be involved with this kind of project." With six months left in the test, Viola expects Purolator will be set to order fuel cell vans within three to five years.

There it isthe oyxgen (sorry, hydrogen) of hope that Hydrogenics will have to rely on for some time yet. Rivard is ready to tough it out.

"We've been through hell before, when the tech bubble burst," he says. "We think [the stock] will come back, but we don't know when." Last summer's spike in oil prices were, he adds, "a godsend." Yet "it takes more than one price peak to change behaviour. It won't happen overnight. But we think the wind is blowing in the right direction."

FUEL CELL FORAYS RANGE FROM FLASHLIGHTS TO GENERATORS

Today's fuel cell players prefer to manage expectations rather than shout from the rooftops. Still, as with Hydrogenics, there's evidence of emerging markets for the products of a number of Canadian fuel cell companies.

) Cellex, a B.C.-based rival to Hydrogenics, last year finished a test run of its fuel cell-powered forklifts at a Wal-Mart distribution centre in Missouri. The retail giant declared itself "impressed."

) Tekion Inc., of Burnaby, B.C., is poised to commercialize its formic acid-powered fuel cells by 2007. That Motorola Inc. sunk an undisclosed amount into the firm last year is evidence that "micro" fuel cells like Tekion's will have an entrée as the battery industry tries to supply ever more power for cellphones and other portable electronics.

) Vancouver's Angstrom Power Inc. is already selling handheld-sized hydrogen fuel cell devices, including power packs, and fuel cells that can power cellphones and BlackBerrys. The company makes industrial-strength flashlights and is testing fuel cell-powered bike lamps.

) Fuel Cell Technologies, a publicly traded Kingston outfit, is beginning to see early-adapter orders for its stationary generators, which produce heat and electricity using a solid oxide fuel cell. The byproducts are carbon dioxide and water vapour. The units, which run on a range of fuels, have been installed in industrial complexes and universities.

      President Pushes Alternative Fuel Development

      Washington Post Staff Writer
      Sunday, April 23, 2006; Page A07

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif., April 22 -- President Bush marked Earth Day with a renewed call for greater government incentives for the development and use of vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells and other alternatives to gasoline..........

...."We are going to have a tough summer," Bush said. His top long-term solution: promote hydrogen, which he called the "fuel of the future."
      ;)

With gas prices at $3 a gallon, Bush said the best way for the nation to end its addiction to foreign oil is to make a transition more quickly to vehicles that run on renewable and domestically produced energy.

Hydrogenics And PEI Energy Corporation Partner To Develop Prince Edward Island Wind-Hydrogen Village Project
$10.3 million project - the world's first of its kind - awarded funding through h2EA program
North Cape, Prince Edward Island, April 22, 2005 - Prince Edward Island Premier Pat Binns and Randall MacEwen, Vice President, Corporate Development of Hydrogenics Corporation (NASDAQ: HYGS; TSX: HYG), announced today that Hydrogenics and Prince Edward Island Energy Corporation will lead a consortium of industry and government partners to develop Canada's first wind-hydrogen village demonstration - the Prince Edward Island (PEI) Wind-Hydrogen Village Project. This multi-faceted initiative will demonstrate, in real-life and in real-time, how wind energy and hydrogen technologies can work together to offer clean and sustainable energy solutions across a wide range of applications. As announced in an Industry Canada release today, the $10.3 million project is receiving an investment of $5.1 million through the Hydrogen Early Adopters (h2EA) program of Technology Partnerships Canada. The Government of Prince Edward Island will invest $2.9 million in the three-year project. This includes $2.5 million in earnings from the North Cape Wind Farm and $425,000 from Prince Edward Island Business Development. Hydrogenics' reputation as a leader in the development of hydrogen technologies, and the Province's national leadership in developing wind energy facilities, provide a strong foundation on which to build a wind-hydrogen village in Prince Edward Island. The home of the Atlantic Wind Test Site (AWTS), Canada's only national wind test site, PEI now draws more than five per cent of its electricity from wind energy at North Cape, which is the site of today's announcement and the primary site of the project.

"Promoting and demonstrating wind and hydrogen technologies is a key component of our Government's Renewable Energy Strategy," said Prince Edward Island Premier Pat Binns. "We believe hydrogen technology will become an important part of the economy, and we are pleased to be a partner in this ground-breaking project. The Prince Edward Island Wind-Hydrogen Village will advance PEI's reputation as a centre for research and development of renewable energy technologies and contribute to our objective to reduce the province' s reliance on imported fossil fuels, achieve a measure of energy self-sufficiency, and protect our environment for future generations."

Noting that the company's reputation as a world leader in the development of hydrogen technologies is unparalleled, Premier Binns added that he is pleased to have Hydrogenics Corporation serve as project manager for the Prince Edward Island Wind-Hydrogen Village. "We are excited to be involved in this landmark project with an excellent roster of partners, both private and public," commented Randall MacEwen, Vice President of Hydrogenics Corporation. "With our diverse portfolio of hydrogen and fuel cell products and expertise, we believe we can bring the kind of comprehensive leadership to this project that will ensure its success. The PEI Government continues to demonstrate vision and leadership toward lessening PEI's dependence on imported power through the deployment of clean wind technologies. This next logical step - marrying up wind with hydrogen as a means of storing energy - has real potential to further reduce dependence on imported power, promote local economic development and promote environmental sustainability. PEI's strong wind regime, geographic size, political will, skilled work force and committed academic community make PEI a perfect location to demonstrate and deploy wind-hydrogen technologies. We believe this initiative will position PEI to become a model for future wind-hydrogen deployments globally, particularly for island and off-grid communities."

Over the course of the three years, the Prince Edward Island (PEI) Wind-Hydrogen Village Project will demonstrate solutions for a range of energy applications, including the installation of a hydrogen energy station, a hydrogen storage depot, and a wind-hydrogen and wind-diesel integrated control system to power the North Cape Interpretive Centre Complex, the Atlantic Wind Test Site, as well as other homes and buildings in the North Cape area. Subsequent phases are expected to include a hydrogen refueling station in Charlottetown to support the refuelling needs of up to three full-service hydrogen shuttle buses used in Charlottetown and the Charlottetown-North Cape corridor, as well as the deployment of fuel cell utility vehicles and the expansion of the wind-hydrogen village to provide energy for additional buildings and facilities, including at least one farm operation. The final phase of the project is expected to involve the introduction of a hydrogen-powered tour boat.

Further details on this project and its partners will be released in the coming months.
