Study says prostate-cancer treatment effective

BUFORD, Ga. (CBS.MW) -- Theragenics said data from a nine-year study show that prostate cancer patients who were given its TheraSeed implants, or internal radiation therapy treatments, had a success rate equal to or better than traditional treatments..





The study`s findings, published in the March issue of the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology and Physics, show that 83.5 percent of patients treated with TheraSeed were cancer-free at nine years, the company (TGX) said.

The study is significant because it shows the results of long-term follow-up and demonstrates that the treatment is at least as effective as traditional therapies, said Juan Noble, an analyst at Fahnestock & Co. Noble rates the stock a "hold."

The treatment, called brachytherapy, or internal radiation therapy, involves implanting short-lived radiation into cancerous tissue. Theragenics said the procedure minimizes the effects of radiation on surrounding healthy tissue. It doesn`t require hospitalization and patients usually resume normal activities within 24 to 48 hours, the company said.

Noble said the treatment, which works only in men with early-stage prostate cancer that hasn`t spread, is an alternative to surgery. "It`s less invasive and less traumatic," Noble said. It`s also significantly less expensive than surgery, and doesn`t cause comparable side effects such as urinary incontinence or impotence, he said.





The analyst said that while the acceptance of brachytherapy is widening, there have been expectations that treatment would catch on more rapidly than it has.

Shares of Theragenics on Tuesday were unchanged at 13 7/8.

The study was conducted by Dr. John Blasko and colleagues at the Seattle Prostate Institute."The nine-year results using TheraSeed in this series add to the growing body of knowledge that brachytherapy can achieve a high rate of success for patients with organ-confined disease," Blasko said in a statement.

Theragenics said nearly 200,000 men in the U.S. are expected to be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, the most common form of cancer in men. According to the National Prostate Cancer Coalition, one in six American men are at a lifetime risk of the disease, which represents 29 percent of all new cancer cases for men.

ich würde mich nicht auf eine einzelne Information verlassen die dazu auch noch eine unqualifizierte Person von sich gibt.

Hör dazu mal die führenden Ärzte, was die dazu sagen und nich irgendein analyst.

Fact ist: Der Goldstandard in der Behanddlung des Prostata-CA ist nach wie vor die radikale Prostatektromie- sprich Entfrenung der Prostata!

Die Brachytherapie ist übringens auch keine Neue Therapieform, denn Bestrahlen tut man schon lange. Das einzigste was neu ist bei der Brachytherapie, ist die Situation daß die Prostata unter dem transrektalen Ultraschall (TRUS) gespickt wird.
