And cost per watt was $1. 18 and included $0.06 of KLM ramp cost.

      First Solar: Pre-Earnings, Street Optimism
by: Eric Savitz posted on: July 29, 2008 | about stocks: FSLR

The Street is optimistic about tomorrows Q2 earnings report of First Solar (FSLR), by far the biggest U.S.-traded solar stock by market cap. The consensus view is for revenue of $216.9 million and profits of 58 cents a share.

Daniel Ries, an analyst at Collins Stewart, says his checks suggest the company had a “strong quarter,” with the swing factor the company’s new Malaysian production facility. He says that his current forecast - $213.2 million and 58 cents - assumes 7 megawatts have been shipped from Malaysia, but that there have been reports shipments have been higher. He adds that pricing, which is largely in long-term contracts denominated in Euros, should benefit from the strengthening of the Euro against the dollar. He thinks revs could be 5%-8% above his estimate.

Ries adds that his checks find the company made “just a modest increase” in solar module efficiency in the quarter, but that greater improvement is expected in the September quarter.

For Q3, Ries is looking for the company to ship 130 megawatts of capacity, up from an estimate 87 MW in Q2. He sees Q3 revenue of $307 million and profits of 96 cents. He maintains a Buy rating and $320 price target on the stock.

Others also weighed in on FSLR today. Caris & Co.’s Ben Pang repeated his Buy rating and $350 target, asserting that the company will likely meet Street estimates. He says FSLR’s lower cost of ownership makes it more sheltered than other solar companies from potential government subsidy cuts in Spain and elsewhere. (He also notes that the company has low exposure to Spain, with most of its revenues coming from Germany and increasingly from the U.S.)

American Technology Research analyst John Hardy likewise expects a “strong quarter,” and says that the Street is likely to be focused on the progress of its Malaysian capacity ramp. He continues to rate the stock a Buy - with a $450 target - based on “its low cost advantage at the module level as well as its relative lack of fundamental exposure to near-term areas of legislative concern such as Spain and the U.S.

Cowen’s Robert Stone this morning also focused on the progress in Malaysia, asserting that “a faster ramp” could lead to 15% upside in Q2 revenue and 20% upside in EPS; that would be $250 million and 70 cents.

First Solar to Build 10 MW Solar PV Power Plant for Sempra Generation

First Solar to build 10 MW turnkey solar PV power plant near
      Boulder City, Nevada

TEMPE, Ariz., Jul 24, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- First Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq:FSLR) announced today that it will build a 10 megawatt (MW) photovoltaic (PV) power plant for Sempra Generation near Boulder City, Nevada. First Solar will design, engineer and construct the turnkey PV power plant and will provide monitoring and maintenance services for the plant over its lifetime. Sempra Generation will be the developer for the project, and will own and operate the PV power plant once completed. Construction began in July, and the 10 MW PV power plant is expected to be completed by the end of 2008. The solar modules to be deployed in this ground-mount project will be produced at First Solar's manufacturing facility in Perrysburg, Ohio.

"Sempra Generation has a proven track record for successful energy resource development and we are pleased to work with them to bring additional renewable electric generation to the region," said Mike Ahearn, chief executive officer of First Solar. The 10 MW PV power plant will be adjacent to Sempra Generation's existing El Dorado combined cycle natural gas plant. By co-locating this new PV power plant with existing infrastructure and the associated interconnection and transmission facilities, Sempra Generation will maximize their land and transmission. As a result, the impact to the immediate environment is minimal and the project completion timeline will be shorter. The PV power plant will serve customers in California and the Western United States.

"This new solar project is another step in Sempra Generation's long-range plan to emerge as a leading renewable-energy developer," said Michael W. Allman, president and chief executive officer of Sempra Generation. "The combination of Sempra Generation's experience in developing power-generation projects in the region with First Solar's expertise in advanced, thin-film photovoltaic solutions is a natural fit. "

First Solar is the cost leader in the solar PV industry, driven by an advanced thin film semiconductor manufacturing process. At the end of 2007, over 300 MW of First Solar PV modules had been installed worldwide and First Solar expects to ship 420 to 460 MW of PV modules in 2008. Together with its project partners, First Solar modules have been deployed in several of the largest ground and rooftop PV power plants in the world.

      About First Solar

First Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq:FSLR) manufactures solar modules with an advanced thin film semiconductor technology and provides comprehensive PV solutions that significantly reduce solar electricity costs. By enabling clean, renewable electricity at competitive prices, First Solar provides an economic and environmentally responsible alternative to existing peaking fossil-fuel electric generation. First Solar PV power plants operate with no water, air emissions or waste stream. First Solar set the benchmark for environmentally responsible product life cycle management by introducing the industry's first comprehensive collection and recycling program for solar modules. From raw material sourcing through end-of-life collection and recycling, First Solar is focused on creating cost-effective renewable energy solutions that protect and enhance the environment.

      About Sempra Generation

Sempra Generation operates and maintains a fleet of power plants serving the U.S. market and is in the process of developing solar and wind power projects in the Pacific Southwest. Sempra Energy, based in San Diego, is a Fortune 500 energy services holding company with 13,500 employees and 29 million customers worldwide.

First Solar officially opens Malaysian plant
23 July 2008 | Fab and Facilities: News

First Solar has held an opening ceremony for the first four plants being built at the Kulim Hi Tech Park in Kedah, Malaysia. The four thin-film manufacturing facilities make up an investment of $680 million by First Solar and create around 2,000 jobs, the company said. When fully ramped, the four facilities will have a 720MW capacity and are a key aspect of First Solar’s plans for 1GW-plus production by the end of 2009.

“Dedicating this plant today represents a major milestone for First Solar. Our expansion into Asia enables us to achieve cost reductions through economies of scale in a high quality manufacturing environment,” said Bruce Sohn, President of First Solar. “I would like to thank our talented and dedicated new associates in Kedah for their role in the successful start up of our production facility, marked by the recent commencement of commercial module production. Our new manufacturing facilities in Kedah will play a vital role in helping the company achieve our stated goals and objectives.”

The last of the four plants is expected to be completed at the end of 2008, with ramping beginning in late Q109.
