Spyglass Establishes New Benchmark in Interactive TV Software with Release of Spyglass Device Mosaic 4.0
Breakthrough Technology Delivers Latest Internet Standards and ATVEF Support -- Enabling Innovative Interactive Television Services
NAPERVILLE, Ill., April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Spyglass Inc. (Nasdaq: SPYG - news) today announced the immediate availability of Spyglass Device Mosaic 4.0, a uniquely extensible, customizable, Internet-based application platform optimized for next generation interactive television products, including televisions, digital set-top boxes and chipsets.
(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/19990203/CGW005 )
This latest version of Spyglass Device Mosaic adds broad support for the latest Internet standards within an extensible, customizable architecture. Spyglass Device Mosaic also includes the addition of an Advanced Television Enhancement Forum (ATVEF) compliant client. ATVEF 1.0 support enables the delivery of interactive television programming, in the form of synchronized broadcast and Internet content, over both analog and digital video systems using terrestrial, cable, satellite and Internet networks.
``The feature-set found in Spyglass Device Mosaic makes it the only state-of-the-art embedded browser technology of its kind in the marketplace today,`` said Anup Murarka, Spyglass vice president of interactive television. ``The combination of the latest Internet technologies and the addition of ATVEF support, can revolutionize the way manufacturers and network operators provide interactive television solutions to their customers.``
Spyglass Device Mosaic is revolutionary because it gives content developers maximum power to create more powerful content and applications. It is extensible, allowing each customer to get a tailored implementation specific to their own use, and is designed to operate across multiple platforms. In addition, Spyglass Device Mosaic delivers all of this in a small footprint designed for today`s consumer electronics. As a result, Spyglass Device Mosaic has been adopted by leading device manufacturers around the world.
By supporting the latest Internet technologies, like HTML 4.0 (including Dynamic HTML), ECMAScript/JavaScript, Cascading Style Sheets, SSL and HTTP, set-top-box and television manufacturers will be able to enhance the viewing experience and enable users to take advantage of the richness of content that is available today. Operators and manufacturers that are looking to provide customized portals, e-commerce and other interactive services will be able to leverage the standards-based support of rich content available in Spyglass Device Mosaic to rapidly deploy compelling consumer applications and services.
``With Spyglass Device Mosaic, applications such as electronic programming guides, e-commerce, chat and other online services can be easily implemented,`` Murarka continued. ``In engineering this product, memory requirements are minimized which results in lower product costs, better quality and increased time-to-market advantages.``
``A whole new viewing experience is coming,`` Murarka added. ``Spyglass Device Mosaic is enabling content developers and device manufacturers to build applications that enhance how we watch the television today. It`s not just about browsing with your television, it`s about how we can leverage Internet technologies to provide the viewer with a truly enhanced television experience.``
