Warum geht die Freeport Aktie gerade so durch die Decke? Habe ich irgendwelche News verpasst? Prinzipiell halte ich den Rohstoffsektor weiterhin für sehr interessant, hätte aber aktuell eher mit einem weiteren Rücksetzer als mit einem Kurssprung nach oben gerechnet.

Freeport-McMoRan Inc does not want to be distracted by any buyout offers and is focused on expanding its Grasberg copper-and-gold mine in Indonesia and boosting cash flow, Chief Financial Officer Kathleen Quirk said on Tuesday.

Executives at rival miner Barrick Gold Corp have openly talked in recent months about their interest in buying all or part of Freeport, especially Grasberg, the world's largest copper mine.

No official offer has been made, and Freeport Chief Executive Richard Adkerson has said he has no interest in any sale.

Quirk's comments on Tuesday underscored that opposition. Freeport is nearing the end of a $15 billion project to expand Grasberg in what will be the largest underground mine ever developed, an expansion that is expected to significantly boost cash flow. Freeport is also building a copper smelter in Indonesia.

"We want to see our shareholders get the value from this plan as opposed to other shareholders getting the value," Quirk told the Morgan Stanley 8th Annual Laguna Conference, which was webcast.

Roughly 70% of the Grasberg expansion project should be done by the end of the year, and 90% by the middle of 2021, she said.

Freeport's stock has nearly tripled since hitting a low in March, and many analysts expect it to climb higher still. Copper prices have gained 11% since January, driven in part by rising demand from the electric vehicle industry.

Given that, Quirk and Adkerson have repeatedly said they do not feel now is the right time for a sale.

"We don't really want to be distracted by M&A," Quirk said. "We want to execute this plan. We believe that this plan will deliver exceptional value for shareholders."

Wenn sich die E-Mobilität durchsetzt, dann wird sich der Bedarf an Kupfer deutlich erhöhen. Nicht nur in den Kraftfahrzeugen selbst, sondern auch für die benötigte Lade-Infrastruktur ist jede Menge Kupfer notwendig.

Nachdem die Preise seit dem 2011er Hoch jahrelang auf niedrigem Niveau lagen und die Exploration entsprechend gelitten hat, dürften für Kupferproduzenten gute Zeiten zu erwarten sein. Freeport's Grasberg hat sicherlich einen Sonderstatus, anderswo dürften die Minen ihre "Peek-Produktion" überschritten haben und die Vererzungsgrade nachlassen, was mittelfristig eher zu einem geringeren Kupferangebot führen sollte.

Ich bin jetzt bei Freeport mit Kursziel 25 USD (bis Ende 2021) dabei.

PT Freeport Indonesia expects its annual copper and gold sales to jump next year as it transitions to operating in its underground mine, CEO Tony Wenas told a virtual conference on Friday.

Freeport Indonesia expects this year's copper and gold sales to be lower than usual at 0.77 billion lbs and 0.82 million ounces respectively.

When it transitions to an underground mine, however, sales of copper in 2021 are expected to jump to 1.4 billion lbs while gold sales are expected to increase to 1.4 million ounces, Wenas said.

Freeport Indonesia, operator of Grasberg, the world’s second-biggest copper mine, is on track shift to all-underground mining by 2022.

Rio Tinto (RIO.AX) on Wednesday cut its refined copper outlook for fiscal 2020, citing a delay in restarting a smelter at its mine in the U.S. state of Utah.

The Anglo-Australian miner said the delays in restarting the smelter at its Kennecott mine were due to planned maintenance and expected it to be running in two months.

Full-year refined copper production is now expected to be between 135,000 tonnes and 175,000 tonnes, lower than its previous range of 165,000 tonnes to 205,000 tonnes.

...The Indonesian government will ask PT Freeport Indonesia to build a copper smelter in Weda Bay, a newly built metal industrial park in Halmahera, the senior minister overseeing mining said on Friday.

"We have proposed to the president, and the president has agreed, to request Freeport to build a smelter in Weda Bay," Luhut Pandjaitan, Coordinating Minister of Maritime and Investment Affairs, told a virtual seminar.

He said the government aims to build an integrated smelting hub in Weda Bay and wants to add a copper facility to the nickel hub in the North Maluku province

The industrial park, controlled by China's stainless steel giant Tsingshan Holding Group and France's Eramet, was given a national strategic project status this year and started nickel smelting operations in April.

PT Freeport Indonesia, a local unit of FreeportMcMoRan , which is now 51% controlled by the government, is building a $3 billion smelter in East Java.

Construction of a smelter is part of Freeport-McMoran's deal with the Indonesian government to maintain its mining rights at the Grasberg mine until 2041.

Ground preparation was under way in East Java, Freeport Indonesia's chief executive said in February, but the company is requesting a delay to the construction timetable due to coronavirus-related disruptions.

A mining ministry official said it has not received any changes to Freeport's smelter project yet. Freeport Indonesia had no immediate comment...

The copper market will see a supply glut of 200,000 tonnes this year as the economic impact of coronavirus hits global demand for the metal, a Chilean industry group told Reuters.

Diego Hernandez, president of Sonami, an association of mining companies with operations in top producer Chile, said both supply and demand would drop as the global economy falters.

"With the information we have today, we expect a 3.5 to 4% decrease in demand," Hernández told Reuters by email.

The association anticipates supply to fall by 3%, which, combined with a decline in scrap metal recovery, would leave a balance of 200,000 tonnes, Hernandez said.

Sonami predicted in early April that copper miners in Chile were considering slashing production amid increasingly strict measures to contain the spread of the new coronavirus.

But Hernandez said he was optimistic the South American mining powerhouse would be spared the worst of the pandemic.

"We know that this second quarter is going to be the most difficult and we hope to be able to overcome this challenge successfully," said the former top mining executive, who has held senior positions in with Codelco, BHP and Antofagasta.

Chile´s state copper agency has estimated a total reduction in output of just 1% of the country´s annual production due to the outbreak.
