High-rollers on junkets turn the tables for Melco

May 17, 2008
JAMES PACKER'S Asian casino joint venture has reaped the rewards of a deal to bring more VIP gamblers to its flagship Macau casino, with an increase in visitor numbers helping it to turn its first profit.
Melco PBL Entertainment has reported a profit of $US43.2 million ($46.1 million) for the three months to the end of March, compared with a loss of $US27.2 million this time a year ago.
The result was below analysts' expectations, with revenues of $US482.9 million well under forecasts of $US635.7 million.
The joint venture consists of just the Crown Macau, but it is building the $US2.5 billion City of Dreams, due to open next year, and a smaller Macau peninsula project known as the Trinity. The company said City of Dreams was on track, but there had been no progress on the Trinity project since last quarter.
A year after Crown Macau opened its doors, it has become the busiest casino in the world in terms of gambling volume.
However, observers say the golden days could be cut short by government moves, announced in late April, that could see a cap set on how much commission casinos like Crown Macau can pay to the companies, known as junket operators, that bring in and finance the gambling of high-roller players.
At Crown Macau, big-spending VIPs turned over chips worth a total of $US19.4 billion in the quarter, up from $US8.5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2007.
More than three-quarters of this turnover, referred to in the industry as rolling chip turnover, was contributed by gamblers introduced to Crown Macau by the junket operator A-Max. Late last year Melco PBL agreed to pay A-Max higher than industry average commission rates of up to 1.35 per cent to bring its clients to Crown Macau, which focuses on VIP gamblers. But this could be limited to perhaps 1.1 per cent if new legislation is passed.
So far the junket deal has paid off, with Crown's "hold" rate for table games, which is jargon for the share of turnover retained by the casino, rising to 3.1 per cent in the quarter. This was up up from 2.4 per cent in the fourth quarter and up from lows of just 1.3 per cent late last year, before the deal was signed.
Melco PBL budgets to retain 2.7 per cent of turnover at Crown Macau.
The high rates have not continued, with hold below 2.4 per cent in the past six weeks, said the Melco chief operating officer, Garry Saunders. The chief executive, Lawrence Ho, said April was 3.4 per cent but May's "hold" was "pretty low".
Shares in the company closed down 64c, or 4.5 per cent, on Thursday at $US13.62.

Hallo,
@geldspender
@TomCole
Jetzt genießt man immer freie Suiten etc.
Gruss,
hidhman
