      http://www.thereporterethiopia.com/index.php/news-headlines/…

19 OCTOBER 2013 WRITTEN BY KALEYESUS BEKELE
New Age starts drilling appraisal well in Ogaden

The UK Company that is prospecting for oil in the Ogaden basin, New Age, has started drilling an appraisal well in Elkuran locality.

New Age was supposed to start the drilling in September. However, after erecting its drilling rig at the drilling site, New Age’s drilling crew identified a technical problem on it. Reliable sources told The Reporter that the crew repaired the rig and started the drilling work last week.

The depth of the well is estimated at 2,800 meters and it will take three month to reach the targeted depth. Well testing will be conducted to determine the presence of oil and the amount of the deposit found in the region.

New Age (African Global Energy) Limited works in the Ogaden basin Block 7, 8 and the Adigala concessions with its partner, Africa Oil, the Canadian oil firm. New Age (the operator) and Africa Oil selected an area in the El Kuran locality to drill the appraisal well. The well site was constructed, erection of the rig was completed at the site and the well was expected to spud last month.

Sources said that the drilling crew had repaired the drilling rig, adding that the drilling work is well under way. The well is operated by New African Global Energy. “In this well they know there is oil. The key thing here is to make it flow,” sources added. According to sources, the company is expected to try tracking or horizontal drilling.

New Age (African Global Energy) Limited engages in the exploration, development, and production of oil and gas primarily in the African region. The company holds licenses for 13 onshore and offshore blocks in Congo-Brazzaville, Ethiopia, South Africa, and Kurdistan covering an area of approximately 88,000 sq.km. According to its official website, the company has a portfolio of development, appraisal, and exploration assets with 37.5 million barrels of oil equivalent of gross probable reserves, 17.1 million barrels of oil equivalent of gross contingent resources, and 702.2 million barrels of oil equivalent of gross prospective resources. New Age (African Global Energy) Limited was founded in 2007 and is based in London.

In a report issued last July, Africa Oil said it is focusing on its concession in the Oganden basin. The report indicated that the company and its partners continue to focus on the El Kuran oil accumulation on Block 8, in the Ogaden basin discovered in the early 1970's. “After completing reservoir characterization studies, the company focused efforts on testing and completion strategies for producing commercial quantities of oil and gas.”

An American company that was prospecting for oil in the Ogaden basin, Tenneco, discovered oil flow in El Kuran-1 in 1973. At that time the oil reserve was not reported as a discovery. Tenneco believed that it was a non-commercial reserve. Tenneco, which discovered the Calub gas field in 1972, was expelled by the Socialist regime following the 1974 revolution.

Petroleum experts assert that at that time exploration technology was not advanced. The experts believe that now with new exploration technology Africa Oil and its partner New Age may confirm the existence of commercial oil and gas reserve in the region.

In the mid-1990s Hunt Oil, another American company, drilled an exploration well at El Kuran locality-El Kuran-2 that turned out dry. Experts of Hunt before leaving Ethiopia told officials of the Ethiopian Ministry of Mines that there was oil in the Elkuran locality adding that they would find it if they drill a second well. However, the management of Hunt based in Huston, Texas, told the experts to relinquish the concession. Hunt discovered oil in Yemen in the 1980s. El Kuran is found near the Ethio-Somalia border.

Police arrest three suspects of Somali at oil site
      Updated Tuesday, October 22nd 2013 at 22:30 GMT +3

      By LUCAS NG’ASIKE

Turkana County: Three suspects of Somali origin were arrested in an oil exploration site in Turkana South district following a tip by members of the public.

The suspects were held inside Tullow Oil compound in Lokichar, after detectives and security officers stormed and pounced on them.

Police declined to give details of the suspects, who are held at Lodwar police station. Sources said the suspects looked suspicious at the Tullow Oil compound prompting the public to alert security officers manning the oil sites.

Police said details on how the suspects found their way to the compound were still scanty. But police remained optimistic that the suspects would give more information.

      Coal until geothermal is ready

The government will rely on coal to fire its electricity power plant in its plan to triple capacity to 5000 MW by 2017, as it is cheaper than geothermal power.

While it is trying to raise the funds necessary for its plans to build geothermal power stations, the Kenyan ministry has issued a call for declarations of interest for the construction of a coal-fired power station in Lamu with a capacity of 900 to 1000 MW. The government will provide the land and Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco) will install a 400 KV transmission line to transport the electricity generated by this future Independent Power Producer (IPP). Construction of this power plant should be completed within 30 months and it will use imported coal.

At the same time, the construction of another coal-fired power station the same size in the Mui basin in Kitui County has been put on hold. The fact is, the government has not been able to find an investor prepared to buy into this project so long as the problems facing the Chinese company Fenxi/Jingu Coal Mining Co. Ltd are solved. This company last year, via the intermediary of its Kenyan ally Great Lakes Corp., obtained the concession to extract coal in blocks C and D which are to fuel this future power station. Since then, the Chinese company has been taken to court by representatives of the Kenyan populations that the project would displace and who are demanding compensation. The Kenyan energy ministry has asked the Attorney General to advise on a way out of this imbroglio.

Antwort auf Beitrag Nr.: 45.672.681 von gabbo62 am 22.10.13 16:10:57Hi Gimo,

Ekales hat auch über 2 Monate (22.07. bis 26.09.) gedauert.
Daher rechne ich mit Agete-1 erst in der 2. November-Hälfte.

      Hi Gimo,

The Agete-1 well, also in Block 13T, was spud on September 16 and is currently drilling ahead. This prospect is 7 kilometers north of the Twiga discovery and along the basin bounding fault trend referred to as the string of pearls by the Company. It has a pre-drill prospective resource best estimate of 276 million barrels of recoverable oil with a chance of success of 54% (Gaffney, Cline & Associates July 31, 2013).
