In articles about the USSR, for which, incidentally, he won the Pulitzer Prize, Duranty noted that conditions in Siberian concentration camps were good and prisoners were given a chance to be reborn and integrated into the Soviet people.
Duranty wrote that there was no famine in Ukraine. Allegedly, he himself traveled through Ukrainian villages where he saw well-fed children and well-fed calves.
When Gareth Jones appeared in the USSR and began to truthfully cover the genocide of Ukrainians, Duranty did everything to prevent his competitor's articles from being published.
Malcolm Muggeridge, who wrote for the Manchester Guardian about the horrors of the Holodomor, called his New York Times "colleague" "the biggest liar he had ever met in journalism.""
