Over the last six months, the Saudi prince, a nephew of King Fahd, has poured $1 billion into U.S. stocks, stepping up his investments in mid-April to May as the stock market weakened, spokesman Amjed Shacker said.
Prince Alwaleed is known to take sizeable minority stakes in large, brand-name companies whose stocks are often, but not always, trailing the market.
His largest single investment in the latest $1 billion buying round was a $200 million stake in WorldCom (WCOM: news, msgs). He also bought $150 million of AT&T (T: news, msgs).
He took $50 million stakes each in Amazon.com (AMZN: news, msgs), Priceline (PCLN: news, msgs), InfoSpace (INSP: news, msgs), Internet Capital Group (ICGE: news, msgs), EBay (EBAY: news, msgs) and DoubleClick (DCLK: news, msgs).
He also took $50 million stakes in Gillette (G: news, msgs), McDonald`s (MCD: news, msgs), Procter & Gamble (PG: news, msgs), Coca-Cola (KO: news, msgs), Pepsi (PEP: news, msgs), Ford Motor (F: news, msgs) and Walt Disney Co. (DIS: news, msgs)
