Among some of the other big losers, security software developer Entrust Technologies Inc. <ENTU.O> plunged 40-13/16 to 36-5/16 after saying its second-quarter earnings per share would miss projections by 75 percent because of delays in closing sales.

U.S. technology stocks troubled by chip, software woes (Updates to late afternoon)
By Elizabeth Lazarowitz
NEW YORK, July 5 (Reuters) - Technology stocks slumped in late afternoon trading on Wednesday, hobbled by a round of profit warnings from computer software makers and a semiconductor industry downgrade.
Weakness in semiconductor shares rattled the tech-laden Nasdaq composite index <.IXIC>, which was down 119 points, or 3 percent, at 3,872, with Intel Corp. <INTC.O>, the world`s largest computer chip maker, weighing heavily.
Intel fell 3-15/16 to 132-15/16 after Salomon said it saw a trend of slowly reversing industry fundamentals. Applied Materials Inc. <AMAT.O>, another semiconductor company, tumbled 8-11/16 to 84.
Blue-chip shares, however, struggled just south of the break-even point, weighed down by computer giant International Business Machines Corp. <IBM.N, but underpinned by gains in financial and old-line shares.
The blue-chip Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> fell 28.82 points, or 0.27 percent at 10,530.62.
The Dow was largely being underpinned by diversified conglomerate Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing <MMM.N>, which rose 4-10/16 to 88-11/16. Also strong was financial services company J.P. Morgan & Co.<JPM.N>, which gained 1-1/8 to 116-1/8. "The financials as well as ... basic materials have been good balances to technology, so that on days that technology has been down, those sectors have been up and visa versa," said John Davidson, chief investment officer at Orbitex Management.
Investors had little to celebrate as they returned from the July 4 Independence Day holiday after three software companies informed Wall Street their earnings would fall short of previous projections.
Among them was business software maker Computer Associates International Inc. <CA.N>, which fell 22-3/16 to 28-13/16 after saying its results would be far below Wall Street expectations. It slammed to a 52-week low of 28-1/2 before recovering somewhat but was still the biggest loser on the New York Stock Exchange on a percentage basis.
"Until we get through earnings statements, we are going to get a lot of concern each time one of these negative pre-announcements come out," said Tony Dwyer, chief market strategist at Kirlin Holdings. "I am surprised that the Nasdaq is not down more than it is."
Salomon Smith Barney lowered its investment rating on the semiconductor sector, sending the Philadelphia Stock Exchange`s semiconductor index <.SOXX> down 8.43 percent.
Analysts said the downgrade prompted some investors to cash in profits in an industry that traditionally experiences a summer slowdown.
Among some of the other big losers, security software developer Entrust Technologies Inc. <ENTU.O> plunged 40-13/16 to 36-5/16 after saying its second-quarter earnings per share would miss projections by 75 percent because of delays in closing sales.
Business software maker BMC Software Inc. <BMCS.O> also warned its profits would fall well shy of expectations, attributing the shortfall to weakness in its mainframe business toward the end of the period. BMC lost 13-1/2 at 22.
The spate of profit warnings unnerved the market in the week leading up to the kick-off of the second-quarter earnings reporting season.
Biotechnology shares bucked the trend, however, and the Nasdaq Biotechnology index rose 4.35 percent to 1,280.
On the NYSE, drug heavyweight Eli Lilly blasted 6 higher to 104-3/4 as investors continued to cheer its newest product in development, a treatment for sepsis.
Keeping the 30-stock Dow index in check was International Business Machines Corp. <IBM.N>, the world`s top maker of mainframe computers, which slid 8 to 101-7/8 in reaction to the profit warnings from Computer Associates and BMC Software. IBM`s weakness came as the software companies cited weakness in sales of software for mainframes.
Oil shares were also under pressure after Saudi Arabia vowed to release more oil to cool scorching prices. Oil giant and Dow component Exxon Mobil <XOM.N> fell 2 to 77-9/16.
The broader Standard & Poor`s 500 Index <.SPX> was down 15.26 points, or 1.04 percent at 1,454.06.

hallo leidensgenossen,
AN "DAXREITER": junge, kauf dir lieber bundes-schatz-briefe!!!!
ein split, was für eine tolle sache wär das!!!! aber leider nicht.
schönen abend, ich wein mich jetzt in den schlaf.
