Yutaka Okada of Japan Crowned 2000 World MONOPOLY Game Champion
      Toronto, Ontario

After two grueling days of preliminary play, and a marathon final round, Yutaka Okada, an economist from Japan, was crowned the World MONOPOLY® Game Champion. He defeated fellow competitors from Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary and Scotland, during a more than three-hour final match played at the Toronto Royal York Hotel. He finished with $11,589.

Yutaka says his 10 years of MONOPOLY experience has helped his negotiation techniques in real life. If there was one person he could choose as an opponent, Yutaka would select Mr. Masayoshi of Softbank Corporation of Japan for his superior capabilities at asset management. His advice to aspiring Monopoly champions is ``never give up until the game is over.``

Today`s final round was the culmination of hundreds of state tournaments, preliminary rounds played by the 38 national champions (plus reigning world champion Christopher Woo of Hong Kong), and a lifetime of practice playing the MONOPOLY game. Competitors included an innkeeper, toy store manager, medical secretary, economist, students (middle, high, college), sound technician, supermarket employee and a journalist. This fierce group of 39 competitors ranged in age from 11 to 53, and represented a total of 38 countries.

Over the course of two days in Toronto, players wheeled and dealed their way through three 90-minute rounds, full of negotiations and purchases. Many of these high rollers went directly to jail and others succumbed to bankruptcy.

New Monopoly: `Pass Go, collect $200M!`

      By Richard Shim ZDNet News

It`s a sign of the times when the favorite board-game phrase "Pass Go, collect $200" ... means $200 million !
In keeping with the times, Hasbro officially launched the dot-com edition of Monopoly.

"We`ve released theme editions in the past, and this new one follows in the same spirit," said Mark Morris, director of public relations at Hasbro`s games division. "If you know Monopoly, it`s all the same -- just the dollar amounts and properties are different."

Originally unveiled in 1935 with more than 200 million copies sold, there are about 10 other editions available, including an NFL edition.

Hasbro has also licensed the game to about 60 publishers for local versions such as New York City, San Francisco, and Denver.

As with the dot-com edition, the boards are the same but the streets are different.

"Chance" and "Community Chest" have been replaced by "Download" and "E-mail Just In." "Go To Jail," "Free Parking," "In Jail," and "Go" remain staples of the game in the corners.

You may not have to pay a luxury tax in the dot-com edition, but your ISP could cut off your connection.

In February, Hasbro is expected to release a new Monopoly line.

The dot-com version has been in stores over the last couple months but was officially released Thursday. The retail price is $29.99.

      What, no AOL?

Some of the dot-com properties include Yahoo!, Excite@Home, AT&T, AltaVista, CNET Networks (the parent company of ZDNet News), and Sun Microsystems. There are 30 companies on the board.

Hasbro officials would not disclose how it decided which companies to include, or whether or not the companies paid for particular placement.

Officials did say, however, that they contacted many of the major companies and negotiated with each company separately.

Noticeable in their absence from the game are Microsoft, Amazon.com Inc., and America Online Inc..
