Steag Hamatech and Constellation 3D Sign LOI to Develop Equipment for Producing FMD Media

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 16, 2000--Constellation 3D, Inc. (NASD: CDDD - news) and optical
disc equipment supplier Steag Hamatech today announced the completion of a formal letter of intent. Under
the agreement, the two companies will collaborate on the design and development of machinery for producing
Fluorescent Multilayer Disc (FMD) media.

``This agreement is part of 3D`s strategy to align strategic partners to cover the entire line of FMD media
production including chemicals, films, disc manufacturing machinery and drives,`` said Constellation 3D CTO
Vladimir Schwartz. ``Steag is the recognized world leader in the production of dye coating equipment for
writable CD and DVD formats - and their expertise in this area is invaluable to our continuing efforts and
success. Currently we are compiling the pieces for a complete media production operation. Industry leaders

The introduction of FMD smashes the barriers of existing data storage formats. Depending on the application
and the market requirements, the first generation of 120mm (CD Sized) FMD ROM discs will hold 50 - 140
Gigabytes of pre-recorded data on 12 - 30 data layers with a total thickness of under 2mm. In comparison, a
standard DVD disc holds just 4.7 Gigabytes. With C3D`s proprietary parallel reading and writing technology,
data transfer speeds can exceed 1 gigabit per second, again depending on the application and market need.

Die Firma entwickelt optische, beschreibbare 140 Gigabyte große Speichermedien im CD-Format
(Fluorescent multilayer disc - FMD), sowie 5 MB große Speichercards (fluorescent multilayer card - FMC) . Da
die Medien und Hardware als Prototyen schon funktionieren, rückt die Serienproduktion in greifbare Nähe.
Man arbeitet in dieser Richtung bereits mit namhaften Firmen wie z. B. Ricoh und Zeon Corporation of Japan
zusammen. Als Einsatzgebiet zielt die FMD auf den Konsumermarkt. Da die FMD abwärtskompatibel zur
DVD und CD sein soll, kann man von einer schnellen Marktdurchdringung ausgehen. Man beachte, daß ca. 12
Stunden DV-Videomaterial auf einer FMD platz finden. Die FMS ist dagegen besonders als Speichermedium
für digitale Fotoappate interessant. Medien mit höherer Speicherkapazität (bis zu 1000 Gigabyte) sind bereits
in der Erprobung.

Klingt ganz toll, zugegeben.

Wäre da nicht die Erinnerung an die schlechten Unternehmensergebnisse bei Steag, an das Versagen des Managements (Stichwort millionenschwere Produktionsübersiedlung nach Europa), die Planungsunsicherheit von Steag und schließlich ist da -ganz unbekannt in einer Ecke des Marktes- Singulus. Ich meine, diese Herren kommen auch nicht "auf der Nudelsuppe daher", und angesichts DEREN Geschäftsergebnissen, DEREN Managementfähigkeiten und DEREN Planungssicherheit finde ich es schlichtweg gewagt, zu behaupten, Steag wäre die Nr. 1.

Doch gebe ich zu, daß ich bei Steag seit deren Absturz mit einem turnaround liebäugle. Könnte er das werden...?

Würde mich auf andere Meinungen freuen!

Singulus bestätigt die mageren Aussichten von Steag durch die ebenfalls schwache Entwicklung bei den eigenen Produktionslinien für einmal beschreibbare CD-R`s. Dies sei aber erwartet worden. Steag hat sein Schwergewicht bei den beschreibbaren Medien, Singulus konzentriert sich auf vorbespielte Datenträger. Beide Unternehmen sind also nur begrenzt vergleichbar.
Erste Downgrades
Dresdner Kleinwort Benson stuft die Aktie von Singulus von "Halten" auf "Reduzieren" ab. Die Wachstumsphantasie im DVD-Anlagenmarkt sei nun eingeschränkt. Im Endmarkt werden zwar Zuwächse von mehr als 175 Prozent p.a. erwartet, die Produzenten hätten aber bereits beträchtliche Kapazitäten aufgebaut.

im CD-R Bereich hat STEAG einen Weltmarktanteil von 60 %

m.E. hat Singulus in diesem Jahr mit DVD-Linien das erlebt, was bei Steag im letzten Jahr mit CD-R Linien geschah, nämlich den super Boom. nächstes Jahr werden die Karten wieder neu verteilt, siehe FMD-Phantasie...
