Rohm , Cree to team up in blue LED market
TOKYO, Dec 18 (Reuters) - Japanese chipmaker Rohm Co Ltd said on Monday it will team up with U.S. semiconductor maker Cree Inc (NasdaqNM:CREE - news) to enter the lucrative market for blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and semiconductor lasers.

The move was prompted by high potential demand for blue LEDs, used to light cell-phone displays and generate brighter light at low levels of power consumption.

The two companies aim to begin selling jointly developed LEDs worldwide as early as the middle of next year, a Rohm spokesman said.

Rohm, Japan`s biggest specialised manufacturer of large-scale integration chips, aims to grab a 20 to 30 percent share of the light-emitting diode market in the next few years, which is expected to be worth some 50 billion yen ($444 million) annually, the spokesman said.

The company also plans within the next few years to begin the manufacture and sale of blue semiconductor lasers, used to read high-capacity digital video discs (DVDs).

Shares in Rohm edged lower in early morning trade on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, in line with a weak tone across the high-tech sector after a drop in the technology-heavy U.S. Nasdaq composite index (^IXIC - news) on Friday. Rohm ended the morning session down 1.59 percent at 25,400 yen

Cree Wins Favorable Decision in Patent Litigation; Tokyo District Court Dismisses Suit
      Filed by Nichia Corporation

DURHAM, N.C., May 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE - news) today announced that the Tokyo District Court has dismissed the
lawsuit filed in December 1999 by Nichia Corporation against Sumitomo Corporation, one of Cree`s distributors in Japan. Nichia alleged that certain
Cree blue LED products infringe Japanese Patent No. 2,918,139. The complaint was directed to the device structure used in Cree`s standard
brightness blue LED products and sought an injunction against sale of the products in Japan.

In its decision, handed down May 15, 2001 in Tokyo, a three-member panel of judges found that the Cree products did not infringe the patent. Cree,
which had previously intervened in the case, argued that its products utilize a structure fundamentally different from the structure disclosed in the patent.

``The Tokyo District Court`s decision represents a significant victory for Cree,`` commented Neal Hunter, Cree`s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
``We succeeded in defending our products in the case, and that success lends further support to our long-standing belief that Cree`s silicon
carbide-based LEDs differ in significant ways from LEDs produced by our competitors.``

North Carolina-based Cree, Inc., established in 1987, develops and manufactures semiconductor materials and devices based on silicon carbide (SiC),
gallium nitride (GaN) and related compounds. With its initial product release in 1989, the company was the first manufacturer to offer a blue LED with
commercially significant applications. Its products today include blue and green LEDs, RF power transistors for use in wireless infrastructure
applications, SiC crystals used in the production of unique gemstones and SiC wafers sold for use in research and development. Cree has new product
initiatives based on its experience in SiC and GaN-based semiconductors, including near ultraviolet LEDs for solid-state lighting applications, blue laser
diodes for optical storage applications, high frequency microwave devices for radar and other communications systems, and power devices for power
conditioning and switching. For more information on Cree, visit http://www.cree.com.

This press release contains forward-looking statements involving risks and uncertainties that may cause actual results to differ materially from those
indicated. Actual results may differ materially due to a number of factors, such as the possibility the ruling described above may be appealed and
modified or reversed on appeal; the possibility of adverse rulings in other pending litigation between the company and Nichia in Japan and in the United
States; and other factors discussed in the company`s filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, including its report on Form 10-K for the
year ended June 25, 2000 and subsequent reports.
