INRANGE Provides New SNIA Center With Key SAN Fabric Technology to Support On-Going Interoperability Testing
IN-VSN FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director Enables Extended Copy Demonstrations at Recent Grand Opening Ceremonies
LUMBERTON, N.J., Feb. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- INRANGE Technologies (Nasdaq: INRG - news), a leading provider of high-end scalable storage networking solutions, has pledged on-going support to the Storage Networking Industry Association`s (SNIA) new technology center (Colorado Springs, CO), providing SNIA with resources that include a one-year loan of its IN-VSN(TM) FC/9000(TM) Fibre Channel Director.
The 14,000-square-foot technology center, the largest independent storage networking complex in the world, supports SNIA by providing testing laboratories as well as educational and training facilities. The center also facilitates the gathering of work groups for the study, development and recommendation of storage standards to the appropriate standards bodies.
At grand opening ceremonies held at SNIA`s Technology Center earlier this month, INRANGE teamed with leading storage management and storage device vendors in the Extended Copy Exhibit to demonstrate the server-free movement of data. The FC/9000 fabric was used to connect, access, and manage ``virtual`` disk drives and to migrate data directly between the drives and optical archives. Server-free backup is one of the key benefits of fibre-channel-based Storage Area Network (SAN) technology, as it shortens backup/restore windows significantly and frees up production databases or application servers normally used in backup procedures for other tasks.
``INRANGE`s on-going equipment contribution to SNIA fosters our work and the work of member companies to develop storage network solutions that are interoperable and open,`` stated Bob Perera, Co-leader of the Extended Copy Theme at the SNIA Technology Center. ``The FC/9000 platform provides us with the port capacity and any-to-any connectivity needed to set-up and execute test scenarios swiftly and without restriction.``
The FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director is the industry`s lowest latency, most scalable solution for building enterprise-class SANs. Currently shipping in 64-port models, the FC/9000 is expected to be available in 128-port models in late Q1, 2001. The system in use at SNIA is currently configured with 24 ports, and can be easily expanded. INRANGE has also committed to upgrading the FC/9000 at SNIA with its new distance extension technology called Extended Credit Addressing Facility (XCAF (TM)). XCAF technology allows any port in the FC/9000 to communicate with SANs and devices up to 100 kilometers away, freeing enterprise SANs from traditional boundaries.
``INRANGE is deeply committed to actively participating in and supporting the work of standards bodies,`` stated Greg Grodhaus, INRANGE CEO and President. ``It helps our industry and it helps our customers to reap the best that technology has to offer. As such, we are delighted to work with SNIA.``

INRANGE and IBM Team with iT-AUSTRIA to Deploy International FICON Storage Area Network (SAN)IN-VSN FC/9000 Director Instrumental in Building Leading-Edge SAN for iT-AUSTRIA
LUMBERTON, N.J., Apr 5, 2001 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The first large-scale
production storage network utilizing FICON has been implemented by iT-AUSTRIA,
which selected INRANGE (Nasdaq: INRG) Technologies` FC/9000(TM) Fibre Channel
Director as the switching infrastructure for its new, high performance SAN.
FICON is IBM`s interconnect technology that lets users migrate ESCON-based
mainframes to the faster, more efficient storage network links afforded by
today`s fibre channel technology.
As Austria`s largest Information Technology services provider, iT-AUSTRIA
supports all the information processing services primarily for Bank Austria,
Creditanstalt, Erste Bank, SPARDAT and the Austrian Saving banks. It relies upon
the FC/9000 ? the industry`s most scalable and highest performance SAN
technology ? to direct the flow of up to 2 terabytes of data per day, stored on
tandem IBM 3494 Tape Libraries.
To help ensure continuous availability of the bank`s information systems,
iT-AUSTRIA implemented a Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex (GDPS)
solution across three locations, over six IBM 9672 servers. GDPS technology
helps to manage databases, processors, network resources and storage subsystems
by automatically mirroring critical data and balancing workloads between sites.
The high-availability design of INRANGE`s FC/9000 Director was central in
supporting iT-AUSTRIA`s mission-critical SAN environment. The successful FICON
implementation is the result of the INRANGE/IBM alliance announced last year,
whereby IBM is reselling INRANGE`s FC/9000 through their channels for FICON and
open systems SANs.
"The Magstar 3590 A60 Tape Controller, the first native FICON storage subsystem,
provides significant customer value," said Brenda Zawatski, VP, Removable Media
Storage Solutions for IBM`s Storage Systems Group. "It lowers infrastructure
costs by allowing multiple ESCON channels to be replaced with a single FICON
channel, while delivering improved performance for tape backup applications."
Scalable up to 128 ports and beyond, the FC/9000 is the industry`s highest
capacity Fibre Channel Director. It is part of the of IN-VSN(TM) family of
Virtual Storage Networking solutions, which provides the infrastructure for
building large-scale storage networks that can be extended globally. The Magstar
3590 Tape Controller is designed for attaching 3590 drives to ESCON(R) and FICON
channels on host systems for true enterprise-class backup and recovery
implementations. It extends the performance of tape operations with the highest
sustained I/O and transfer rates to create the highest-performance enterprise
SAN yet.
"Very large-scale networks for enterprise customers with S/390 and zSeries
servers have arrived," stated INRANGE Executive Vice President and Chief
Technology Officer, Charles Foley. "We are positioned with our partner IBM to
replicate the customer success that we have enjoyed at iT-AUSTRIA and assist
other users in capitalizing on the bandwidth and productivity benefits of FICON
implementations."

Altera Helps INRANGE Break the SAN Barrier
SAN JOSE, Calif., Jun 5, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Storage Area Networks
Conference/ Altera Corporation (Nasdaq: ALTR) announced today that INRANGE
Technologies (Nasdaq: INRG), a leader in scalable storage networking solutions,
has selected Altera system-on-a-programmable chip (SOPC) products for use in its
unique Extended Credit Addressing Facility (XCAF(TM)) technology. INRANGE`s
storage area network (SAN) products make it possible to access data over great
distances. Prior to the introduction of XCAF, 10 kilometers was the distance
limitation between devices in a SAN. XCAF allows any port in INRANGE`s
industry-leading FC/9000(TM) Fibre Channel Director to communicate with any
other port in a SAN over 100 kilometers. This distance extension enables users
to realize the true promise of storage area networks: data that is easier to
access, manage, backup, and share regardless of where it is located.
Jay Morris, director of sourcing and supplier development for INRANGE, explained
their device selection criteria, "We considered devices from all of the leading
programmable logic suppliers. Altera provided the best combination of value,
performance, device utilization, and support for this project. Further, the
availability of APEX(TM) 20KE devices in compact FineLine BGA(TM) packages meant
that we could minimize board space and maximize our cost effectiveness."
In order to develop the XCAF technology, INRANGE had to meet rigorous
performance requirements in their design. "We needed the design to run at over
100 MHz in order to meet our goal of allowing any port in the SAN to communicate
with any other port over 100 kilometers away with no performance degradation,"
said Nick Hannon, vice president of storage network switching development. "The
phased-locked loops (PLLs) in the APEX 20KE devices were key to achieving our
targeted speed."
"Enabling breakthrough products like those from INRANGE is exactly what Altera
SOPC solutions excel at," said Alain Bismuth, vice president of new market
development at Altera. "We are excited that our APEX 20KE devices played such an
important role in allowing INRANGE to overcome the 10 kilometer SAN barrier."
