Samsung Losing Money in Chip Sales
By Kim Miyoung
SEOUL (Reuters) - The world`s top computer memory chipmaker,
Samsung Electronics, said on Friday it lost money on its key memory
chips in June but expected to post a profit for the quarter on overall gains
for its semiconductor unit.
Samsung officials said the company had losses in June from sales of some
dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips, including its key 64
megabit (Mb) DRAMs.
``We are not losing money in our mainstay 128Mb chips,`` a company
official said. ``We also expect hefty sales from non-memory chips.``
Company spokesman James Chung said it was still tallying June earnings
ahead of releasing mid-year results on July 20.
Samsung has repeatedly said it had no plans to cut output of memory
chips despite spot prices on industry-standard 64 Mb 8Mx8 PC 100
DRAM chips falling below $1 versus $9 a year ago.
Analysts said that would hurt mid-year results due on July 20.
``Samsung began to post losses in the semiconductor business in June,``
said Chon Woo-jong, an analyst at SK Securities. ``But I don`t expect its
second-quarter earnings to be too ugly, helped by other sectors, including
digital products.``
Samsung posted a 1.24-trillion-won ($957.5-million) net profit for the three
months ended March 31.
Q2 EARNINGS SEEN CUT IN HALF
Many analysts forecast earnings in the second quarter to fall to about half
that, mostly due to the fall in DRAM chip prices. ``I see 620 billion won in
net profit in the second quarter and it would worsen into the third quarter,
given the bottom-line chip prices in the spot market now,`` said Jung
Chang-won, an analyst at Daewoo Securities.
SK Securities` Chon said he recently raised the second-quarter earnings
forecast to 800 billion won from 600 billion, reflecting gains from
investment in affiliates.
``Gains from investment in its affiliate, Samsung Card, will help the chip
giant`s profit,`` he said.
Analysts expect second-quarter turnover to fall 20 to 30 percent from 8.6
trillion won in the first quarter, when sales were spurred by
high-performance semiconductors such as Rambus chips and the Korean
won`s depreciation against the dollar.
SK`s Chon expects second-quarter sales of 7.9 trillion won.
Memory chip sales accounted for two thirds of its three-trillion-won
semiconductor business in the first quarter.
Such business includes thin film transistor-liquid crystal displays
(TFT-LCDs) and non-memory products.
Research firm Gartner Dataquest has forecast 2001 would be the
memory chip sector`s worst year. Gartner has forecast global DRAM
chip sales would fall 55.5 percent to $14 billion from $31.5 billion in 2000.
Samsung`s main domestic rival and the world`s third largest memory
chipmaker, Hynix Semiconductor (00660.KS), said on Thursday it was
seriously studying measures to reduce its chip output.
Samsung has said that while it was not cutting output, it was producing
fewer 64Mb chips and more 128Mb and higher-performance chips.
It has maintained that a cut without a similar move by peers Micron
Technology (NYSE:MU - news) and Infineon Technologies (IFXGn.DE)
would have little positive impact on chip prices.
Japan`s top chipmaker Toshiba (6502.T) announced a temporary output
cut in June.
Shares in Samsung closed down 6,000 won or 3.4 percent at 170,000 on
Friday. They have shed more than 27 percent since a close at 235,000
won in late May.
Hynix shares have fallen to record lows in recent trade and closed at a
record low of 1,890 won, down 10 percent, while the benchmark Korea
Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) (^KS11 - news) closed 2.05
percent lower at 548.49.

Sales of eight trillion won were down seven percent from 8.6 trillion won, a Samsung official said in a conference call. Samsung Elec cuts 2001 capex 16 pct to 5.1 trln won
SEOUL, July 20 (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics , the world`s largest computer memory chipmaker, on Friday announced it had cut its 2001 capital spending plans by one trillion won to 5.1 trillion won ($3.92 billion). The South Korean company said in a conference call the reduction comes from its semiconductor sector. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) declined to 600 billion won in the second quarter from 1.6 trillion won in the previous quarter, it said. The company earlier said it posted a second-quarter net profit of 880 billion won on sales of eight trillion won. Samsung shares were down 1,000 won at 176,000 at 0107 GMT yet outperforming the benchmark index, which was down 1.33 percent.
Korea Samsung Elec says 10 pct dividend for H1
SEOUL, July 20 (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics , the world`s largest computer memory chipmaker, will pay a 10-percent mid-year dividend, it announced on Friday.
The 500-won ($0.38) interim dividend is unchanged from last year`s mid-year payout.
