Special Steel Aims to Protect Margins
2006-04-11 15:09:52 South China Morning Post
China Special Steel plans to lower production costs by spending tens of millions of yuan to refine its equipment, as it seeks to protect profit margins amid an over-supplied market.
The company, which makes bearing, spring, gear and carbon-structured steel for the machinery and equipment manufacturing industries, yesterday posted a 4.31 per cent decline in net profit to 122.14 million yuan last year.
Gross profit margin slipped to 19.14 per cent from 19.95 per cent in 2004, despite a 19 per cent rise in sales volume to 244,437 tonnes and the unit cost of sales falling 6 per cent to 2,770 yuan a tonne.
The culprit was a 6.64 per cent drop in the firm's average product selling price to 3,426 yuan last year.
Bearing steel accounted for 93 per cent of last year's turnover, up from 82 per cent in 2004.
"Last year's profit decline was due mainly to the government's macroeconomic tightening policies which saw steel prices fall," said chief financial officer Florence Lee. "But with our output rising to 400,000 tonnes this year, gross margin should improve."
Chairman Dong Shutong said steel prices had risen 3.8 per cent in the first quarter to about 3,100 yuan a tonne from the trough in the fourth quarter.
The company hopes to cut the unit production cost by 4 to 5 per cent this year by using gas generated from its blast furnace to generate cheaper electricity, and source cheaper iron ore.
It signed a deal in January to buy iron ore from Indonesia at no more than 90 per cent of the market price based on Australian ore producer Hamersley's lump ore price. It also expects to reap savings by spending several tens of millions of yuan to refine its iron-making, steel-making and rolling equipment.
Separately, Angang New Steel posted a 17.79 rise in net profit last year to 2.11 billion yuan, as turnover increased 14.03 per cent to 26.48 billion yuan.
The profit was in line with the 2.1 billion yuan consensus forecast of 24 brokerage analysts polled by Thomson First Call.
Second-half net profit fell 17.37 per cent year on year to 894 million yuan due to falling steel product prices. Oversupply saw steel prices fall 31.92 per cent between early April and the end of last year, according to the composite steel product price index compiled by the China Iron & Steel Association.
A final dividend of 36 fen per share was proposed, up from 30 fen declared in 2004.
