Nachrichten (viropharma, pdli) sehr zufrieden.

erst einmal stoppen sollte.

Kongress vorgestellt. Seit dem verliert die Aktie. Ein Schelm, der schlimmes dabei denkt

Cell Therapeutics confident in PG-TXL data
4/18/02 6:21 PM
By Deena Beasley
LOS ANGELES, April 18 (Reuters) - Cell Therapeutics Inc. on Thursday said it is very confident with upcoming data on its experimental cancer drug PG-TXL, but clinical trials of the drug have been redesigned and it is unlikely to be approved by regulators before 2005.
"The timeline for approval is looking like 2005. It could be 2004, but that would be pretty aggressive," said Candice Douglass, a spokeswoman for the Seattle-based company.
PG-TXL links paclitaxel, the generic form of Bristol-Myers Squibb Co.`s Taxol, to a substance that binds to tumors and passes through tumor blood vessels and is said to dramatically reduce the amount of chemotherapy that can damage healthy cells and cause side effects like nausea and hair loss. Taxol is used mostly to treat lung, breast and ovarian cancer.
James Bianco, chief executive of Cell Therapeutics, had said in October that, assuming positive clinical trial results, the company expected to file for U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval of PG-TXL in 2003, with a potential commercial launch seen in 2004.
"People had been thinking that late 2004 was possible, but realistically we are looking at 2005," said Matthew Kaplan, an analyst at Punk, Ziegel & Co.
Cell Therapeutics` shares, which on Thursday rose 10 cents to close at $16.56 on Nasdaq, have lost about a quarter of their value in the last week on concern that the company will fail to release encouraging data from early- and mid-stage trials of PG-TXL at a May 18-21 meeting of the American Society for Clinical Oncologists (ASCO).
"We are very confident with the information that will be presented at ASCO," Douglass said. ASCO bars researchers from revealing ahead of time any studies being presented at the conference.
Early results from a small number of mid-stage trial patients showed that the drug can shrink tumors, but in the latest reports some patients had no response, analysts said.
"The data was printed six months ago. I suggest people wait and see what`s actually presented," said Matt Geller, an analyst at CIBC World Markets.
Kaplan noted that the trial data on file at ASCO is largely preliminary and the researchers are expected to present more up-to-date trial results at the actual conference.
Analysts said investors have also balked at the company`s decision to redesign pivotal, late-stage trials of PG-TXL.
Bank of America analyst Eric Ende said the new Phase 3 trial design increases the risk associated with the drug`s potential launch date, but the slide in the share price is nevertheless an overreaction.
"Though leaders said we should actually do this as a front-line therapy and we would be able to get it through the FDA in the same amount of time," Douglass said.
As a result, the company will conduct a Phase 3 trial comparing PG-TXL to Taxol in ovarian cancer patients, rather than studying the drug in patients who are no longer responding to chemotherapy.
At the same time, the company will run another pivotal-stage trial of the drug as a second-line therapy for non-small cell lung cancer patients, the most widespread form of cancer in the United States.
Enrollment in both trials will begin in June, Douglass said.
Cell Therapeutics said it will release more details on its PG-TXL development program during a conference call following its release of quarterly earnings on Wednesday.

Cell Therapeutics CEO can`t stop persistent
drubbing of its stock
By Luke Timmerman
Seattle Times business reporter
Cell Therapeutics` stock has been falling for
weeks on word that some of its key clinical
trials are failing, and an attempt to counteract
the perception apparently didn`t help.
The Seattle biotech company saw its stock fall $1.17, or 8 percent, to $13.87
after it released first-quarter earnings yesterday and explained changes to its
trials in a conference call with analysts. So far this year, Cell Therapeutics
stock has dropped 42.5 percent.
Chief Executive James Bianco tried to turn things around with a positive picture
of PG-TXL, the substance designed to make Taxol, a leading cancer drug, less
toxic and more concentrated on tumors. Research summaries leaked to Wall
Street have raised questions about whether the substance is as effective as
hoped and whether it needs to be delayed and studied further.
Yesterday, Bianco told analysts the company plans to apply for Food and Drug
Administration approval by late 2004 for the PG-TXL in patients with a certain
type of lung cancer and a year later for patients with ovarian cancer.
That presents "new priorities," Bianco said, but not delays.
Any delay means a significant loss. Some analysts
predict the substance could become a billion-dollar
hit.
"PG-TXL has been yielding exciting and encouraging
results," Bianco said.
Detailed information from trials will not be available
until the American Society of Clinical Oncology
conference next month.
More than one analyst was confused by Bianco`s
comments. When one asked Bianco whether
PG-TXL is generally superior to Taxol in
effectiveness, Bianco said it is in terms of "clinical benefit." When pressed on
whether it is superior in "efficacy," Bianco avoided using the term.
Sales of Trisenox, an arsenic-based cancer drug and the company`s lone
marketed product, were covered as a sidelight. Trisenox had $1.5 million in
first-quarter sales — better than the $929,000 a year earlier but less than the
$2.3 million it had in the fourth quarter.
Cell Therapeutics said demand for the drug is up, but first-quarter sales fell
because suppliers added inventory in the fourth quarter.
Bianco said the company is on track to reach its goal of $12 million in Trisenox
sales this year.
Bianco also addressed the $3.5 million low-interest loan he was granted by the
firm two weeks ago and disclosed to the Securities and Exchange Commission.
"I recognize (that) the timing of the transaction, in retrospect, was less than
optimal," Bianco said.

type of lung cancer and a year later for patients with ovarian cancer.

Danke

Cell Therapeutics klärt Sachverhalt Alle Nachrichten
20.05. / 22:43

moment ja wohl eher nix her.

06/02
4,617,078 Shares Short
1,587,811 Average Volume
2.91 Days to Cover
Was ist besser?

Encouraging Results Reported on TRISENOX(R) in Myelodysplasia and Chronic Myeloid Leukemia at International Conference
Friday November 8, 7:01 am ET
Researchers Present Preclinical and Clinical Data on Arsenic Trioxide In Non-APL Hematologic Malignancies
SHANGHAI, China, Nov. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- In a satellite symposium in conjunction with the Chinese Society of Hematology 2002 Conference, researchers presented data from clinical trials indicating that arsenic trioxide may be effective in inducing high rates of remission in hematologic malignancies like myelodysplasia (MDS) and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). TRISENOX® (arsenic trioxide) is marketed by Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (CTI) (Nasdaq: CTIC - News).
Ma Jun, M.D., of Harbin Institute of Hematology reported on the clinical efficacy of arsenic trioxide in treating MDS. In 21 patients with MDS-refractory anemia (MDS-RA), six patients (29 percent) achieved a complete remission (CR) and eight patients (38 percent) achieved a partial remission (PR) for an overall objective response rate of 67 percent. Complete remission was maintained for three years. In 18 patients with MDS-refractory anemia with excess blasts (MDS-RAEB), three patients achieved stable disease (SD) or better (one PR and two SD).
Dr. Ma also provided data on the clinical efficacy of arsenic trioxide among patients with CML. In a study of 29 patients with newly diagnosed CML, 19 patients (66 percent) achieved a CR with four patients achieving a PR for an overall response rate of 79 percent. Safety analyses for these clinical studies were not provided.
Mechanistic insights into the multiple mechanisms of action by which arsenic trioxide may lead to apoptosis of cancer cells were also elucidated in preclinical sessions. These concluded that arsenic trioxide could prove effective alone or in combination with radiation or standard chemotherapy against a wide variety of tumors.
About TRISENOX®
TRISENOX® (arsenic trioxide) is marketed by Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (CTI). TRISENOX® was approved for marketing in 2000 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat patients with relapsed or refractory Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL), a rare, life-threatening form of cancer of the blood. TRISENOX® was granted marketing authorization from the European Commission in March 2002. APL, one of eight subtypes of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), represents 10-15 percent of the more than 20,000 patients diagnosed with AML each year. TRISENOX® is currently being studied in more than 40 clinical trials in a variety of cancers.
U.S. marketing approval for TRISENOX® was granted based on results from a U.S. multicenter study in which 40 relapsed APL patients were treated with TRISENOX® 0.15 mg/kg until bone marrow remission or a maximum of 60 days. Thirty-four patients (85 percent) achieved CR. When the results for these 40 patients were combined with those for the 12 patients in a pilot trial, an overall response rate of 87 percent was observed.
WARNING: TRISENOX® should be administered under the supervision of a physician who is experienced in the management of patients with acute leukemia. Some patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) treated with TRISENOX® have experienced APL differentiation syndrome -- with symptoms similar to retinoic acid-acute promyelocytic leukemia (RA-APL) syndrome. Arsenic trioxide can cause QT prolongation (which can lead to torsade de pointes) and complete atrioventricular block.
The most common adverse events associated with TRISENOX® have been generally manageable, reversible and usually did not require interruption of therapy. These have included hypokalemia, hypermagnesemia, hyperglycemia and thrombocytopenia as reported in 13 percent of the patients (n=40). Abdominal pain, dyspnea, hypoxia, bone pain and neutropenia were reported in 10 percent of these patients, while arthralgia, febrile neutropenia and disseminated intravascular coagulation were reported in eight percent of patients.
