Ich kann`s nicht lassen Da Cockney hier hemmungslos wiederholt (Ruby Tuesday hatten wir schon #358 ), will ich aus gegebenem Anlass auch einen Song aus der Steinzeit dieses Threads wiederholen (#28 - leider ist ja bei #1000 die Möglichkeit vorbei, sich das Gesamtkunstwerk anzuschauen )

Melanie, die sich meistens nur mit der Gitarre begleitete, wurde zu einer Leitfigur der Hippie-Generation. Sie präsentierte ihr Repertoire in der ausverkauften New Yorker Town Hall und erhielt glänzende Kritiken: "Sie gewann ihr Publikum innerhalb von Minuten und fesselte es einen Abend lang. Ein Blick im vollbesetzten Haus machte deutlich, daß dieses unscheinbare, natürliche Mädchen seinen Traum verwirklicht hatte" (Cashbox). Ihre gebrochene Stimme und der erzählerische Stil faszinierte Fans und Kritiker gleichermaßen.

Schon zu Beginn ihrer Karriere wurde Melanie als "die kreativste, beeindruckendste junge Interpretin in der heutigen Folkszene" (Billboard) gerühmt. Im Verlauf von zwei Jahrzehnten verkaufte die sympathische Sängerin weltweit rund 23 Millionen Schallplatten. In ihrer besten Zeit war sie mit ihren sanften, aber eindringlichen Melodien permanent in den internationalen Bestsellerlisten vertreten. Ihre engagierten Songs beschworen noch einmal Hippieträume. Mitte der 70er Jahre wurde es ruhig um "eine Interpretin mit einer unvergleichlichen Ausstrahlung" (Record World). Melanie zog sich ins Privatleben zurück und widmete sich ihren Kindern. 1978 bemühte sie sich um ein Comeback.

Am 16. 8. 1969 trat sie beim Woodstock Festival während eines heftigen Gewitters auf, das sie zu dem Song "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)" inspirierte.
