Steven Spielberg has forecast that the Internet will eventually become the primary source for entertainment. Appearing on NBC`s Today show In December, Spielberg told co-host Katie Couric: "I think that the Internet is going to effect the most profound change on the entertainment industries combined. And we`re all gonna be tuning into the most popular Internet show in the world, which will be coming from some place in Des Moines." When Couric remarked, "Great, I`m gonna lose my job," Spielberg interjected, "We`re all gonna lose our jobs. We`re all gonna be on the Internet trying to find an audience."
There are Internet businesses and there are Internet businesses. Some seem to have merely tacked on an E-commerce presence as an after-thought. There are media adaptations and there are catalogue/retailing adaptations. But there aren`t too many E-businesses that really use the Internet to reinvent a sector.
That`s what caught our eye about internetstudios.com (OTC BB: ISTSE $5.00). It`s one of a few companies building an online space dedicated to the buying and selling of entertainment rights. Currently a fragmented and inefficient market, the business is ripe for change. August Entertainment has contracted a five-year licensing agreement with Pinema Productions, a Turkish-based distributor, for the TV rights to ``True Romance,`` a film directed by Tony Scott. InternetStudios.com was paid a transaction fee for the sale of these rights through a working test of its online film site.
Robert Maclean, chairman, said, ``This transaction is a first and represents a milestone for our business, as well as a validation of the future for buying and selling filmed entertainment throughout the world.``
Heidi Lester, chief executive officer, added: ``This is a very significant day for InternetStudios.com. Having worked on the development of this site for over six months, it is extremely gratifying to realize the fruition of our efforts.``
Steve Fredericks, president and chief financial officer, stated: ``The company`s OnlineFilmSales.com Web site will be officially launched just prior to the Cannes Film Festival in early May and will allow holders of rights to list filmed entertainment productions for sale and complete the transaction with the buyer on the Web Site.
``With over 12,000 films made each year worldwide, not to mention re-issue rights on prior productions, our business model reflects an efficient and dynamic alternative to traditional industry sales outlets, allowing sellers and buyers in approximately 60 territories to conduct business.``
