      LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 7, 2000--
L&H RealSpeak and L&H ASR 1600 provides human sounding text-to-speech and accurate speech recognition features for message management system

Intersis (www.us.voixx.com) today announced they will license L&H(TM) (NASDAQ: LHSP; EASDAQ: LHSP) RealSpeak(TM) and L&H(TM) ASR 1600 automatic speech recognition to provide speech capabilities in the recently shipped VoiXX version 2.5 voice for Microsoft Exchange/Outlook. VoiXX(R) offers an easy, cost-effective way to add voice messaging functionality to Microsoft Exchange by using existing hardware and an inexpensive voice modem. The integration of L&H`s award-winning speech technologies provides a more intuitive interface for VoiXX users.
L&H RealSpeak, a breakthrough text-to-speech (TTS) engine, reads any text in a human sounding voice enabling users to access e-mail from any telephone. In addition, L&H`s multilingual automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology provides "hands free" access to the VoiXX inbox from any telephone enabling users to simply speak commands to navigate through menus and manage messages. With L&H`s speech recognition technology the need for callers to use the telephone keypad to "spell out" employees` names is eliminated. Instead, users are able to speak the name of the person they need to contact and have VoiXX make the connection. Other new features of VoiXX version 2.5 include telephone access to the Microsoft Outlook Contacts folder, support for pagers and SMS (Short Messaging Service), one-touch outbound dialing through the PBX, additional language support, and an improved client interface.
"VoiXX is an example of how speech and language technology is being used to create more intuitive interfaces," said Pam Ravesi, senior director of product management at L&H. "Consumers are demanding a more natural way to interact with their computers and L&H`s speech and language technology is enabling developers to respond to this demand. Users are able to more easily and intuitively communicate with a computer from anywhere at any time simply by using their voice."
"When we looked for a speech technology leader to enhance VoiXX, we found that L&H exceeded our expectations with L&H RealSpeak," said Randal DePriest, director and vice president for Intersis. "With VoiXX 2.5, Unified Messaging has reached a new level. It no longer matters if you have a voice mail message or an e-mail message, you can access them the same way through a PC or any telephone in the world."
For example, using VoiXX 2.5, a user can send and receive voice or e-mail messages through their Microsoft Exchange/Outlook account or any telephone. When the user receives an e-mail or voice message in their inbox, VoiXX can be configured to automatically call the user on their cell phone and play the message or use natural text-to-speech technology to read the message to the user. The user can then reply to the message in their own voice and VoiXX will send a recorded voice reply to the original sender via e-mail.

      BRUSSELS, March 8 (Reuters) -

Belgian speech technology company Lernout & Hauspie (L&H) said on Wednesday its acquisition of Dictaphone would add to 2000 earnings before goodwill amortisation.

L&H said earlier on Wednesday it was buying the U.S. dictation and call centre recording company for 4.75 million in shares.
"It will be accretive for the year 2000, disregarding amortisation of goodwill," Chief Financial Officer Carl Dammekens told a telephone news conference.
L&H Co-chairman Paul Hauspie said the acquisition would provide geographical and product synergies.
"Dictaphone is 90-95 percent in the United States. L&H is extremely strong on Asia-Pacific. If we can add that to the customer base of Dictaphone we are sure we have a winning game," he said.
Hauspie said L&H would incorporate its technologies into Dictaphone`s medical dictation and call centre products.
Hauspie said L&H was still considering spinning off parts of its business and that the Dictaphone acquisition presented further opportunities for such operations.
"With this acquisition, a fantastic spin-off opportunity is born," he told reporters, but declined to give further details.
L&H shares were up $4.9 dollars at $114.25 dollars on the pan-European Easdaq index at 1015 GMT.

Lernout adds Linux, voice software to handheld

      By Stephanie Miles
      Staff Writer, CNET News.com
      February 7, 2000, 5:25 p.m. PT

Lernout & Hauspie wants PDA users to talk to the hand.
The speech recognition software company is hoping to gain attention this week with a product prototype that combines some of the trendiest technology around--PDAs (personal digital assistants), speech recognition, wireless Internet access and the Linux operating system--into one package. Lernout & Hauspie is touting the new device at the Demo 2000 conference in Indian Wells, Calif., an annual show devoted to unveiling new technologies and Net companies.
Code-named Nuk, from Nukulu, the Hawaiian word for "echo," the device purportedly allows users to search the Web, compose emails and organize files, all through voice commands. The Nuk is expected to ship by the end of the year. The company is looking for potential manufacturing partners at the Demo 2000 conference, according to a company spokesperson.
"Most users employ handheld and mobile devices on the go, often requiring hands-free use," Gaston Bastiaens, president of Lernout & Hauspie, said in a statement. "Most also find that manual information input and output is awkward because of the small size of handheld and mobile devices."
Running on the Linux operating system and powered by a StrongARM processor, the company`s prototype puts it in the middle of the rapidly emerging market of information appliances, scaled-down computing devices that stand out by being simple to use.
Expected to outpace shipments of consumer computers by 2002, according to an International Data Corp. research report, appliances and devices are being looked at with interest from everyone from PC manufacturers to household appliance makers.
"Right now, we`re just getting started," said Kevin Hause, an analyst with IDC, speaking about the information appliance market. "It will be one of the fastest growing categories around."
One of the challenges, however, remains figuring out what customers will want in an Internet device . Some analysts and industry executives, for instance, believe cell phones with built-in organizers will become a hot commodity, a notion that others scoff at.
Lernout`s trump card comes in speech recognition, one of those supposed "must have" technologies that few seem to buy. Some experts, including noted industry veteran Jeff Hawkins, co-founder of Palm Computing, have publicly disavowed speech recognition on small devices like PDAs.
In addition, speech recognition, which until recently required too much processing power and memory capacity to work well on desktop computers, may be too demanding an application for devices with much smaller hardware capabilities and issues with battery.
Voice recognition, however, is a natural method for input for handhelds, the company maintains. Using the Lernout & Hauspie continuous speech recognition engine, users can dictate and send emails using voice commands. In addition, the technology allows users to do simple Web searches, process e-commerce transactions, and conduct online stock trades, all using the wireless Internet connection and voice commands.
"We put this together for the conference, to show how these technologies can work together, and to show what can be done," said a spokesperson from the company. "It`s interesting to see dictation on a handheld, because users aren`t going to be wanting devices they can`t interact with."

      Lernout founders start investment company

      By Reuters
      Special to CNET News.com
      January 12, 1999, 4:50 a.m. PT

The two cofounders and cochairmen of Belgian speech technology company Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products today said they had started a new investment company focused on information technology companies.
The new firm, L&H Investment, would operate separately from Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products, Jo Lernout and Pol Hauspie said in a statement.
Lernout and Hauspie are the major investors in LHIC and, as part of the start-up, are placing just more than half of their 20 percent personal holdings in Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products in LHIC, the statement said.
LHIC has completed an investment in Applied Voice Recognition, a Texas-based developer and marketer of voice-recognition solutions for the health care information technology industry. LHIC has also invested in four private companies.
LHIC said it expects most of its investments to be in the range of 15 percent-plus stakes.

      etwas älter:

      Spacherkennungssoftware: Lernout & Hauspie
US-$ an dem Unternehmen planen.

US-$ bekanntgegeben. Das Nettoeinkommen betrug im gleichen Zeitraum 22 Mio. US-$ oder 1,14 US-$ je Aktie.

      Lernout & Hauspie: Enormes Potential

Fonix FAAST offers speaker independent, noise immune, and continuous speech recognition, with a small memory footprint and low MIPS requirements. Fonix speech output (text-to-speech) provides a high-quality natural voice in a small footprint engine. FAAST 1.0 allows developers to build an ASR and TTS command and control speech application very quickly then download the program to a target platform for testing and optimization. FAAST allows a developer to build speech applications by dragging graphical icons representing speech functions to a workpad and connecting them with drag and release lines to form a speech application. Text-to-speech can be added as prompts or confirmation to any speech command via a node wizard function. Once built, recognition accuracy and optimization can be monitored and adjusted on-screen in an inspection window.

Fonix Demonstrates at Embedded Systems Conference Fonix Speech Recognition and Text-to-Speech Now Available on Microsoft Windows CE Salt Lake City, Utah - February 28, 2000 -- Fonix Corporation announced today that it will present its FAAST (Fonix Application Accelerator Speech Toolkit) at the Spring Embedded Systems Conference February 28 March 2, in Chicago, Illinois at the McCormick Center South. Microsoft has selected Fonix for inclusion in its Partners Pavilion at the Spring Embedded Systems Conference to demonstrate rapid application deployment of speech recognition and text-to-speech applications running in the Windows CE environment. "Microsoft is impressed with the speech recognition and text-to speech products that Fonix has developed," said Don Chouinard, marketing manager of Windows CE OS and Tools at Microsoft Corp. "Windows CE is designed to be a rich, yet flexible, operating system offering complete solutions that help developers get their products to market quicker, and the FAAST rapid application tool from Fonix will help developers do just that." "As part of Microsoft`s Embedded Tools Partners program, Fonix has been able to rapidly port to CE and now is positioned to immediately provide speech and handwriting recognition to customers using the CE operating system," said Thomas A. Murdock, president and CEO of Fonix. "Our FAAST Embedded 1.0 rapid application development tool will allow developers to select a platform, build a speech program, then download it to their target processor running on Windows CE. This is a significant leap forward in implementing speech in embedded environments now - today." Fonix will have available at the conference pre-release demonstration CDs of FAAST. (All free CD`s were distributed at conference!!) Fonix offers rapid recognition, speaker independent, noise tolerant speech solutions, in addition to the most natural, human quality text-to-speech available. With small memory footprints and low power requirements, Fonix core technologies are currently ported to seven different microprocessors and are being deployed in embedded applications and products. Demonstrations at the conference provide thousands of developers the opportunity to witness speech technology running on chips currently available in the marketplace.
FROM THE COMPANY: 03/01/2000: From Michelle at Fonix: Asked if there could be a possibility of a deal with Qualcom, - (based on the deal MSFT just struck with Qalcom); She said "I have been instructed not to pre-announce. When contracts are signed; We will issue a press release". She also stated; "Fonix has alliances with major companies; Fonix would not have those alliances if we did not have the operating capital to be able to fullfill those contracts and obligations". (They have a new PR person who is in her late 30`s, and has experience in PR for technologies. Michelle also stated that this woman realizes - the importance of news on the net.) She also said that they have had a problem like this before with Bloomberg and it really serves nobody`s best interest to get their lawyers involved...too costly. They are, however, discussing a PR stating that they do have sufficient operating capital, and she encourages all investors to call and get the real story from FONIX.
Mar/01/2000 11:19 Fonix Soars, Boosted by Internet Chat and Breakthrough Hopes
Salt Lake City, March 1 (Bloomberg) -- Fonix Corp. shares surged in the past three days, fueled by messages on Internet bulletin boards talking up the company`s products for speech and handwriting recognition. The Salt Lake City company`s shares rose 3/8 to 2 7/8 in early trading of 8 million shares. Yesterday, Fonix was the most active stock in U.S. markets, gaining $1.08 to 2 1/2 on trading of 45 million shares. At year-end, Fonix traded at 29 cents. Small investors have scooped up Fonix as optimistic messages flooded stock bulletin boards, with more than 15,000 posted on Ragingbull.com alone last month. The Internet messages reflect excitement that Fonix will be demonstrating its software within a Microsoft Corp. booth area at a trade show in Chicago. ``Fundamentals are strong,`` said one investor`s message on Ragingbull`s board. ``If MICROSOFT is interested in FONIX technology; how many other technology companies and telecoms are (will be) also?``
(Fonix has done all of these things: Existing products are starting to sell along with (new) software developers kits. Fonix has (and is) making strong deals to secure money for operating costs. A large issuing of stock was recently made and is selling at prices that will afford Fonix time to reap the benefits of it`s *"exponential marketing strategy". Fonix is currently working on the marketing of the StrongArm chip. (Fonix is in a total of seven microprocessor versions - on Intel and Infineon (Seimens) chips.) They have transformed from a developmental company; to a company starting to produce a revenue stream.... . *(Exponential Marketing Strategy: Overwhelming Market Domination through licensing and royalties. After Fonix is situated to control standards due to high quality of technology created and owned; (and number of vendors using their technology - that Fonix has basically given away); It will be coming back to them.... Give the people what they want, when they want it; and give them the best. Make it the standard. Then start making royalties off of it. Real profits for Fonix are a year away as it will take this long to get into enough devices.. I hope you can wait that long. This is just the "roll out". I feel Fonix will trade around $5.00 by march 31,2000.) It is not hard to follow the leads on Fonix. If you have doubts; do a little research your self; Look at some of these places:

Casio, Siemens in Net device deal Duo to make wireless palm-sized Net access terminal Last Update: 6:47 AM ET
Dec 15, 1999 NewsWatch MUNICH (CBS.MW) -- German electronics manufacturer Siemens AG and Japan`s No. 1watch-maker, Casio Computer Co., said Wednesday they`ve agreed to make a newWindows-based, palm-sized, wireless personal computer that can access the Net and make phone calls. Siemens ranks third among Europe`s makers of wireless communications devices usingglobal standards for mobile communications (GSM) technology, while Casio (csioy) bringsto the project its experience as a maker of the Cassiopeia Microsoft (msft) Windows CE-based multimedia palm-sized PC`s. "The marriage of Siemens communication technology with Cassiopeia multimediafeatures and functions promises to create powerful new products," said Kazuo Kashio, president of Casio. The companies plan to unveil a prototype of the still-unnamed device at a European technology trade show in February next year. They say it will come with full multimedia capabilities including digital music and video, a color touch screen, wireless e-mail and Internet access, mobile phone services, and personal information management software. The device is the first of what the companies said they anticipate will be a range of similar wireless devices that will work on GSM networks, which are prevalent in Europe, but also will have the "potential" to work on CDMA networks as well, which are common in the U.S. "This partnership builds on our respective strengths," said Peter Zapf, president of Siemens Communications Devices. "We intend to spearhead the next revolution that will be driven by the convergence of information and communications." Fonix has Japanese (English and German) Speech Recognition and Text to Speech (all languages) available on FAAST for developers of electronic devices via Siemens/Infineon. Siemens/Infineon is co-developing the next Cassiopia with Casio. It is near certainty that the new Cassiopia will be available with Fonix ASR/TTS as a data entry and internet navigational tool. The new Cassiopia is expected to be marketed by Feb. 2000 .

      steht an.

      ---------------------------

Stock Analysis of Lernout & Haus

Thank you for requesting an analysis of Lernout & Haus from VectorVest ProGraphics. The ticker symbol for Lernout & Haus is LHSP. LHSP is traded on the NASDAQ and options are available on this stock.

PRICE: LHSP closed on 03/10/2000 at $119.94 per share.

VALUE: LHSP has a Value of $22.9 per share. Value is the foundation of the VectorVest system. It is a measure of what a stock is currently worth. Value is based upon earnings, earnings growth rate, dividend payments, dividend growth rate, and financial performance. Current interest and inflation rates also play an important role in the computation of Value. When interest and/or inflation rates decrease, Value goes up. When interest rates and inflation increase, Value goes down. Sooner or later a stock`s Price and Value always converge.

RV (Relative Value): LHSP has an RV of 0.41. On a scale of 0.00 to 2.00, an RV of 0.41 is very poor. RV reflects the long-term price appreciation potential of the stock compared to an alternative investment in AAA Corporate Bonds. Stocks with RV ratings above 1.00 have attractive upside potential. A stock will have an RV greater than 1.00 when its Value is greater than Price, and its Relative Safety (see below) and forecasted earnings growth rate are above average. In some cases, however, a stock`s RV will be above 1.00 even though its Value is well below Price. This happens when a stock has an exemplary record of financial performance and an above average earnings growth rate. In this case, the stock is currently selling at a premium, and the investor is banking on future earnings growth to drive the stock`s price higher. This information is very useful not only in knowing whether or not a stock has favorable price appreciation potential, but it also solves the riddle of whether to buy high growth, high P/E, or low growth, low P/E stocks.

We believe that RV ratings above 1.00 are required to consistently achieve above average capital gains in the stock market.

RS (Relative Safety): LHSP has an RS rating of 0.61. On a scale of 0.00 to 2.00, an RS of 0.61 is poor. VectorVest looks at safety from the viewpoint of an equity investor (one who is buying stock of a company) rather than that of a purchaser of debt (one who is lending money to the company). From this perspective, consistency of financial and operating performance, stock price appreciation history, and price volatility are the key factors used in the evaluation of Relative Safety (RS). Debt to equity ratio, capitalization, sales volume, business longevity and other factors are also considered, but to a lesser degree.

VectorVest favors steady, predictable performers. All stocks are rated on a scale of 0.00 to 2.00. A stock with an RS greater than 1.00 is safer and more predictable than the average of all stocks. A stock with an RS less than 1.00 is less predictable and riskier than the average stock.

RT (Relative Timing): LHSP has an RT rating of 1.83. On a scale of 0.00 to 2.00, an RT of 1.83 is excellent. RT is a fast, responsive, short-term price trend indicator. It analyzes the direction, magnitude, and dynamics of a stock`s price behavior over the last 13 weeks; then reflects and projects the short-term price performance of the stock. Once a stock`s Price has established a strong trend, it is expected to continue that trend for the short-term. If the trend dissipates, RT will gravitate towards 1.00. Should the price change dramatically, RT will notice the crucial turning point. When warranted, it will explode from a Price low and dive from a Price high.

All stocks are rated on a scale of 0.00 to 2.00. If RT is above 1.00,the stock`s Price is in an uptrend. Below 1.00, the stock`s Price is in a downtrend.

VST-Vector (VST): LHSP has a VST-Vector rating of 1.21. On a scale of 0.00 to 2.00, an VST of 1.21 is very good. VST-Vector solves the dilemma of balancing Value, Safety and Timing. Stocks with high RV values often have low RS values, or stocks withlow RV and RS values have high RT`s. How can we find the stocks with the best combinations of Value, Safety, and Timing?

The classic vector formula (square root of the sum of the squares) handles this problem. It combines a set of forces into a single indicator for ranking every stock in the VectorVest database. Stocks with the highest VST-Vector have the best combinations of Value, Safety and Timing. These are the ones to own for above average capital application.

GRT (Growth Rate): LHSP has a GRT of 17 % per year. This is very good. GRT stands for forecasted Earnings Growth Rate in percent per year. GRT is updated each week for every stock. Watch GRT trends very carefully. If the GRT trend is up, the stock`s Price will likely rise. If the GRT trend is down, the stock`s Price will increase more slowly, cease to increase, or subsequently fall.

Recommendation (REC): LHSP has a Buy recommendation. REC reflects the cumulative effect of all the VectorVest parameters working together. These parameters are designed to help investors buy safe, undervalued stocks which are rising in price, and to avoid or sell risky, overvalued stocks which are falling in price.

VectorVest is tuned to give an "H" or "B" signal when a stock`s price is approximately 10% above a recent low, and an "S" signal when the stock`s price is approximately 10% below a recent high. High RV, RS stocks are favored toward receiving "B" REC`s, and sheltered from receiving "S" RECs.

STOP-PRICE: LHSP has a Stop-Price of 70.80 per share. This is 49.14 or 41.0% belowits current closing Price. VectorVest analyzes over 6,000 stocks each day for Value, Safety and Timing, and calculates a Stop-Price for each stock. These Stop-Prices are based upon 13 week moving averages of closing prices, and are fine-tuned according to each stock`s fundamentals.

In the VectorVest system, a stock gets a "B" or an "H" recommendation if its price is above its Stop-Price, and an "S" recommendation if its price is below its Stop-Price.

DIV (Dividend): LHSP does not pay a dividend. VectorVest focuses on annual, regular, cash dividends indicated by the most recent disbursement. Special distributions, one-time payments, stock dividends, etc., generally are not included in Dividend (DIV).

DY (Dividend Yield): LHSP has a DY of 0 percent. This is above the current market average of percent. DY equals 100 x (DIV/PRICE), and is expressed as a percentage.

EY (Earnings Yield): LHSP has an EY of 1.31%. This is above the current market average of %. EY equals 100 x (EARNINGS PER SHARE/PRICE), and is expressed as a percentage.

EPS (Earnings Per Share): LHSP has an EPS of $1.57 per share. EPS stands for leading 12 months Earnings Per Share. VectorVest determines this forecast from a combination of recent earnings performance and traditional fiscal and/or calendar year earnings forecasts.

P/E (Price to Earnings Ratio): LHSP has a P/E ratio of 76.39. This ratio is computed daily based upon Price and EPS. P/E = Price/EPS.

GPE (Growth to P/E Ratio): LHSP has a GPE of 0.22. This ratio suggests that This ratio suggests that LHSPis overvalued. Growth to P/E ratio is a popular measure of stock valuation which compares Earnings Growth Rate (GRT) to Price Earnings ratio (P/E). A stock is considered to be undervalued when GPE is greater than 1.00, and vice-versa. VectorVest believes that RV is a much better indicator of long-term value. The RV of 0.41 for LHSPis very poor.

DS (Dividend Safety): LHSP has a DS of 0. On a scale of 0 to 99, a DS of 0 is poor. DS is defined as the assurance that regular cash dividends will be declared and paid at current or at higher rates for the foreseeable future. Stocks with DS values above 50 on a scale of 0 to 99 areabove average in safety.

RISK (Dividend Risk): LHSP does not pay a dividend. All stocks in the VectorVest system that pay dividends are classified as having Low, Medium or High Dividend Risk (RISK). Stocks with DS values above 50 are above average in safety. These stocks are classified as having LOW or MEDIUM RISK. Stocks with DS values below 50 are below average in safety and are classified as having HIGH Risk.

DG (Dividend Growth): LHSP has a DG of 0 percent per year. Dividend Growth is a subtle yet important indicator of a company`s historical financial performance and the board`s current outlook on the future use of funds.

YSG-VECTOR (Yield-Safety-Growth Vector): LHSP has a YSG-Vector of 0. On a scale of 0.00 to 2.00, an YSG-Vector rating of 0 is very poor. VectorVest combines Dividend YIELD, SAFETY and GROWTH into a single parameter. YSG-Vector allows direct comparison of all dividend paying stocks. Stocks with the highest YSG-Vector values have the best combinations of Dividend Yield, Safety and Growth. These are the stocks to buy for above average current income and long-term growth.

      VOL(100)s: LHSP traded 795900 shares on 03/10/2000.

INDUSTRY: LHSPhas been assigned to the Software (Business) Group. VectorVest classifies stocks into over 190 Industry Groups and 50 Business Sectors.

LHSP has well below average safety with well below average upside potential. It reflects a stock which is likely to give well below average, inconsistent returns over the long term.

The basic strategy of VectorVest is to buy low risk, high reward stocks. We suggest that Prudent investors buy enough high Relative Value, high Relative Safety stocks to keep the overall RV and RS ratings of their portfolios above 1.00. As you do this, you`ll find that your risk will go down and your investment performance will improve. Not a bad combination.

      Tolle Recherche !

      Also: Langfristig no Problem!

      Jahr aufmerksam.

      Lernout & Hauspie Announces Licensing Agreement With America Online;

Agreement to Cover Variety of L&H Information and Knowledge Management Tools
      Business Wire - March 13, 2000 17:15

IEPER, Belgium and BURLINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 8, 2000--Lernout & Hauspie (NASDAQ:LHSP)(EASDAQ:LHSP) (L&H), a worldwide market leader in speech and linguistic technologies, products and services, today announced a licensing agreement with America Online (AOL) for L&H`s Intelligent Content Management (ICM) tools, including spelling and grammar checking. L&H`s high quality ICM tools leverage L&H`s linguistic technologies to provide users with a way to enhance document searches, document management, and spell checking in a variety of applications.

The L&H(TM) tools will help AOL members by speeding and simplifying the viewing, rendering and browsing of information retrieved from the Internet. These L&H ICM tools include: IntelliScope(R) Language Recognizer, a tool that identifies more than 40 languages and codes, including HTML and XML formats; IntelliScope(R) Search Enhancer, an information retrieval tool that performs a morphological analysis to provide additional depth and breadth to searches; CorrectEnglish(TM), a tool that corrects errors commonly made by speakers of other languages when they write in English; and International ProofReader(TM), a proofing application that extends the automated text analysis and correction capabilities of L&H`s other spell-checking systems to include a myriad of grammatical, usage, formatting and hyphenation errors.

"Advanced natural language technologies will play an important role in sifting through information and recognizing words in context in a variety of applications, especially Internet-based material," said Gerald Calabrese, senior vice president of worldwide sales for L&H. "As L&H continues to license our ICM tools to customers like AOL, we continue to demonstrate how our natural language tools can provide added intelligence to the business platform of tomorrow."

"We are pleased to be working with several of L&H`s language technologies," said Martin Fisher, senior vice president of client development AOL. "L&H`s spelling and grammar checking tools provide instant value to our users, who are increasingly turning to our e-mail and search tools as communication tools to help make their everyday lives easier."

      --------------------

      Hello Fools,
Warning this is a very long post!!
I suggest that LERNOUT and HAUSPIE SPEECHPRODUCTS ( LHSP) is a rule breaker
Following the rule breaker online seminar and reading a lot off post on LHSP; I took the initiative to go to the head-office off LHSP in Ieper Belgium and try to speak to one off the managers to get more information.
Ms. ELLEN SPOOREN : Senior vice-president of Marketing & Corporate communications was kind enough to receive me ( I had no appointment). I told her I was following the rule breaker online seminar of the Motley Fool; and asked her if she could help me with more information on the company. She told me I could contact her the following week.
I contacted the Motley Fool; Keith O`Malley, Nacohn and Bobkatcs and asked if they could help me prepare the interview. I hereby thank them (especially Nacohn ) very much.
The interview took place on Monday 20 march 2000:
I thank all the people at LHSP , especially Ms. Ellen Spooren and Ms. Annemieke Blondeel (Investor Relations Europe) to make this possible .
      THE INTERVIEW:
      * important emerging industry
      - I think we agree on that. no need to pursue it
with her, although you could ask what FUTURE products
under development she thinks will have the biggest
      impact.
Future products with big impact: there is no limit to the possible applications of L&H technologies, except for human inventiveness.
      * Top dog
      - I think we are fairly comfortable with this too,
but you could get her opinion on a couple competitors
and how they feel they stack up. Are the competitors a
threat? I have heard a lot about Dragon Systems, but they seem
to be much smaller financially than L&H.
Still, Dragon seemed to have much larger
sales growth recently: 1 year sales
      growth 166% (1998?), LHSP 62.7% (1999).
No comment on Dragon at this moment.
      Also,
www.hoovers.com listed major competitors to be
Berlitz, IBM and Lucent. Those are all huge compared
to L&H. The question I would pose to Ellen, is what
portion of those companies, perhaps which
subsidiaries, are really competitors to L&H`s
      services.
Berlitz: only a competitor for translation, where they use mainly human translators. They do not have the type of innovative solution L&H has (iTranslator) for the whole market, nor the same capacities for other solutions, such as technical writing in several languages at once (instead of translating a text the client gives, L&H receives the necessary info and writes the technical document, such as a handbook or maintenance manual, in all required languages at once, using sofisticated multilingual software L&H has developped).
At this moment, the three largest translation companies in the world are L&H, Berlitz and Bowne (US Publisher). The revenues of all three are very similar, but L&H is building up revenue by offering easy access to translation of small documents through the Internet, which is something the other two do not do. Furthermore, translation and globalisation accounts for approx. 1/3 of L&H revenues, and is a core competency using core technology. It provides the R&D with the necessary large grammatically correct text corpora to continue making and improving speech and language technology components, thereby maintaining the advantage of L&H over other competitors, such as IBM or Lucent.
As to IBM and Lucent, speech technology accounts for only a very small part of their overall revenues, and is not seen as "core business". For IBM it is less than 1% of revenue.
How should we measure the size of the
financial threat and backing of these other companies
      in comparison to LHSP?
The financial heavyweights cannot catch up with the L&H technology for a number of reasons:
      - L&H has the largest "army" of speech and language technology specialists working for them (and there is a limited supply of these people), and the foundation created by Mr Hauspie and Mr Lernout is training even more of them with a view to having a continuous stream of employees for L&H in the pipeline.
      - Money is not everything in this field, you also need resources that take time, such as accoustical databases. Currently L&H has a database of over 35000 man-years of accoustical data in many languages and many environments (face-to-face, in a car, over the telephone,...), which has taken many years to collect. They also have very large databases of text corpora in many languages, which is part of the reason why they acquired translation companies. Competitors would have to buy such resources, if that were possible. A good illlustration of this is that part of the relationship L&H has with Microsoft is a JV which collects accoustical data, using L&H technology for verifying and storing the data, for use by Microsoft`s own speech lab.
      - Large (and small) competitors do not have all speech and language technologies. Philips, for instance, had to buy VCS in order to acquire text-to-speech, as they only had voice-recognition technology in a limited number of languages. IBM only operates in a few languages, etc L&H is the only company in the world that has Automatic Speech Recognition, Text-to-Speech, Music and Voice Coding (=compression), and Translation technologies all under one roof, in upto 16 languages (and 20 more, such as Scandinavian languages, Malay, Farsi, Thai ...under development) and as its only business. Competitors usually have only one or two technologies, in a limited number of languages. L&H also has the vast majority (more than 90%) of all spell checkers and grammar checkers, and has innovative search and summarisation engines not only for text databases, but also for accoustical databases.
      - L&H technologies are based on linguistics, as compared to for instance Autonomy, who have created a search and summarization engine based on mathematics/statistics.
Do any of those companies have
a chance of taking over L&H`s dominance considering
L&H has over 1100 linguists on board, etc?
No, we don`t think so, as L&H feels it is about two years ahead of the competition.
      * Sustainable advantage gained through business
      momentum, patents, visionary leadership, (inept
      competition)
I think we can rule out inept competiton (I am sure
      the others are not inept).
      - Do their many OEM contracts have a long obligation
to them? Does this give a SUSTAINABLE advantage or is
      that unpredictable?
Most of the OEM contracts are "recurrent", i.e. the clients come back for new contracts for upgrades or new and other technologies. L&H offers a big advantage to OEMs by being the only company with a full platform independent product offering (TTS, ASR, translation/localisation and compression) under one roof. For example, if a Japanese company wants to make a car-navigation system for the European market they could go and licenceASR and TTS (but not RealSpeak) for UK English from BT, Dutch from Philips, German from DASA etc, but they would then have to re-engineer all these to fit their own platform. L&H can deliver the whole lot, ready for the OEM`s platform, thereby allowing the OEM a quicker time to market for his product. What about patents? How many
patents do they have? L&H currently has 75 patents, with a number of patents pending, amongst others for the Nak, the small handheld device running on Linux, which allows you to use it as a telephone, access the Internet and do e-commerce, and as a PDA (such as Psion etc) with full dictation capabilities, all this without a keyboard and with voice controls and TTS feedback. L&H distributes a "patents book" about once a year to those financial analysts who ask for it. It contains one page on every patent L&H has.
Is that a significant barrier to
the competition or is the competition finding its own
way to do the same sort of things without patent
infringement? How many patents do the competition
have? There are many patents in Speech and Language technologies, but L&H is willing and able to complete their product offering by incorporating other technologies, in exceptional cases through licensing (such as the BBN/Hark engine, which L&H licensed from an outside supplier), or through acquistions, such as was the case with the Elan acquisition (Elan`s mid-level TTS engine perfectly complemented L&H`s high-end RealSpeak and its low-end TTS 3000). There is a news release about a recent patent:
      http://www.lhsl.com/news/releases/19991221_patents.asp
      - What does the Dictaphone acquisition do to their
business "momentum". Could it possibly bog down their
momentum? They are taking on almost 1 BILLION of
financial cost for that acquisition. Or will this
leverage their ability to increase their momentum? The Dictaphone acquisition gives L&H a dominating position in the US healthcare market, which is estimated by business analysts to be worth about $ 6 billion per year. By incorporating Dictaphone`s technology into L&H technology, L&H is now able to come up with a product offering for call centers which will not only allow for faster handling of incoming calls (through interactive dialog systems that can answer the incoming call, recognize the topic and putting the call through to the appropriate employee if necessary, or even handling calls), but also of digitally recording the calls for the purpose of quality control, and storing the recordings (also using compression) for future datamining with L&H search engines that can search on speaker name or topic of conversation. The call center market is very large, and still growing, and more demand is being created for systems that do not say "Please press 1 if you want A, 2 if you want B etc.....". Forrester and The Gartner Group have recently published research about the explosive growth in electronic banking and brokerage using WAP and voice access. (see attached).
Also, the Dictaphone acquisition is NOT about hardware. That part of the business will most likely be spun off.
.. * excellent past share appreciation.
no brainer here, their RS is 93% (and rising
according to the indicator arrow) - from
      www.stocktables.com
      * good management and smart backing.
      - I think the smart backing is very clear!
      Intel, Microsoft, etc...
      - Also their debt to equity is nice and low (.08)
      - management - they already have excellent bios on
the management team on their web page.
      - however, perhaps if she can give more insight into
the personal nature and attitudes, desires of the
leaders. Where can we look to get that sort of
information? Try http://www.sail.com/index_invest.html, go to "events" and look at the video`s of the opening of Flanders language valley, which have Jo Lernout and Pol Hauspie talking about their vision and ambitions, as well as some very interesting statements by people such as Craig Barret, CEO of Intel, and others.
Managements` vision is "Ambient Intelligence", which means having access to all the resources at your disposition anytime, anywhere, anyhow and in your own language, by simply speaking. This requires speech technologies built in to all kinds of devices, and "Intelligent Agents" living on the Web, which are able to identify the user (by his or her voice), and who can instruct all sorts of "webbots" to do what you want them to do (get the shareprice of L&H from the NASDAQ site, order a book from Amazon and turn the heating in you living room up to 22 degrees C, whilst telling you what is still in your fridge and suggesting a recipe to cook a meal with those ingredients, as well as giving you a list of the people who tried to phone you, sent you an e-mail - and read that e-mail to you, and allow you to dictate a reply - and telling you what and where your next appointment is and how to get there...I could go on and on ....). It also requires these agents to understand natural human speech in many languages, and to be able to answer in spoken natural language.
L&H management knows what is necessary to make this happen, has made a roadmap, and is now following that roadmap. Of course this will not happen all at once, different pieces of the puzzle are found first, and are now the individual markets where L&H is active: telecom, automotive, PC, intranets, Internet, domotics ... Also, not all end-users will start using the new technologies at the same time. That is why some geographical areas sometimes seem to adopt L&H technologies more quickly than others, such as Korea at this moment. Of course management is realistic and knows that not any one company can make all this happen on its own. Therefore, L&H has alliances with sector leaders such as Microsoft, Intel, Cisco, Unisys etc.
(the interview itself is a proof off good management )
      * The greater the consumer brand the better.
L&H is not what I would currently call a consumer
brand, at least to the general population. Do they
envision it becoming such? Why would the average
person care about who provided the speech software on
their hardware devices, especially if much of their
work is through OEM contracts, then the L&H name is
probably not even the name of the software package
that the user will be aware of. For example Windows
2000 uses L&H stuff, but where would a Windows user
become aware of that? perhaps their real "customers" are the companies
that they develop OEM contracts for. IS THEIR VISION
to be "THE" brand in the eyes of the contracting
companies or ultimately in the eyes of the consumer?
If the consumer, then how do they plan to achieve
that? If companies they contract with, then how can we
become acquainted with the perspective of all such
potential companies in search of speech product
support and what their opinion of L&H is? How does
Ellen feel L&H sits in the eyes of their target
      population?
L&H is devoting more marketing time and effort to becoming a "consumer brand". This will also result in more of the OEM clients labeling their product with an "L&H Inside" mention, which should help create more awareness of the name towards the end-user, and which should be a guarantee for the quality of the speech and language technology in the device. L&H technologies continue to win top awards at exhibitions and shows, which also contributes to the name recognition.
Within the OEM market, as well as within the worldwide market for translation in the fields of software, automotive, aerospace etc. L&H is already a well recognized brand. Also, L&H appears as technology partner in the information for most of its large OEM customers, adding to general market awareness of the brand (why would all these large companies use L&H?) In the retail market for L&H applications the awareness is also growing, helped by good product reviews in leading magazines (for example the Ziff-Davis publications such as PC Magazine) as well as in general press and business press.
A significant constituent of financial media is
recently on record for calling it overvalued...
      - we`ll have to search for that, but with the
amazing stock price increases recently, I am sure we
      can find something.
      - What should we ask HER about this:
How does SHE feel the company is valued on the
stock market compared to its present worth? compared
to its future worth? Hopefully SHE will not think it
      is overvalued.
The company does not make statements about the valuation of the shares. That said, I think we need to emphasize that the overall market for speech and language technologies is only beginning to emerge, as more and more people have access to systems (PC`s, mobile phones, PDA`s, car navigation systems) that have enough computing power to use these technologies. Four years ago home computers did not have 300Mhz processors, necessary to run dictation software for instance. Overall use by end-users is at this moment still quite limited, but is increasing. In other markets, such as telecommunications, growth is more rapid. However, users do not notice they are using L&H when they ring Directory Enquiries for a telephone numer...
Business analysts such as TMA Associates, Forrester and others have made estimates about explosive future growth in the Speech and Language Technology markets, foreseeing classic J curves in these markets starting within the next few years, depending on which market we are talking about.
Speech Recognition, if made practical, seems like an incredible area for

Who do they feel are their major competitors?
On 7th February 2000 L&H demonstrated an industry first: its prototype handheld device that has a large vocabulary continuous speech dictation engine to easily send and receive e-mail, surf the Web and conduct e-commerce transactionsThis patent-pending, prototype handheld device for Linux platforms is equipped with a large vocabulary speech recognition engine – an industry first –and the L&H RealSpeak text-to-speech (TTS) technology engine. During the presentation L&H demonstrated how users can employ the device to “listen” to e-mail summaries as well as full-text e-mails; issue natural language commands such as “next message” or “send e-mail”; and dictate e-mails. As part of its live presentation, L&H also demonstrated how its solutions allow a user with a wireless Web connection to make simple web queries (“What is the Weather in Fresno”; complete an e-commerce transaction, such as purchasing a book from Amazon.com; and conduct a stock trade execution on Etrade or Charles Schwab .com (“i.e. buy 200 share of Eink”). L&H does not plan to manufacture this device itself, but will license the design to OEMs.
I think this gives us a much better insight of what LHSP is all about.
With this information I personally think we can conclude this is a genuine rule breaker.
This technology will have a great impact on our future.

Lernout & Hauspie Signs Definitive Agreement to Acquire Dragon Systems
      Business Wire - March 28, 2000 01:35
      BURLINGTON, Mass./IEPER, Belgium--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 28, 2000--

Acquisition to Provide Additional Resources to Pursue New
Market Opportunities; Combined, Companies Plan to Bring
      Speech to Mainstream Markets
Lernout & Hauspie (NASDAQ: LHSP, EASDAQ: LHSP) (L&H) announced today that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Dragon Systems Inc. of Newton, Mass., a privately held leader in speech and language technology. Combined, the two companies` existing resources create a "brain trust" that is expected to use the best of the technologies developed in both companies to work on projects designed to accelerate the use of speech and language in emerging and mainstream consumer markets.

The acquisition will provide L&H with approximately 350 additional employees, 170 of whom are research scientists and development engineers with expertise in speech and language technology. The addition of these talented engineers and scientists will allow L&H to accelerate its pursuit of new strategic market opportunities in areas such as handheld and mobile devices, automotive, WAP, data mining, and others. It will also help the company meet the growing demand for speech and language applications in key markets such as telephony and healthcare. The increased R&D resources and the combined intellectual properties should also help L&H create speech solutions that are even more intuitive and user friendly, helping to make speech more appealing to an even broader group of general consumers.

The transaction calls for L&H to acquire all of the outstanding stock of Dragon Systems for approximately 5.45 million shares of L&H Common Stock. L&H expects the acquisition to be slightly accretive to its EPS (excluding goodwill) during the second half of 2000 and much stronger beyond 2000. The company expects the acquisition to close in the next few months. Dragon Systems had revenues of approximately $60 million and a net loss of approximately $22 million for its fiscal year 1999. L&H intends to use the purchase accounting method for this acquisition.

"By combining the two companies` R&D resources and leveraging the sales and marketing teams, we expect to significantly add to L&H`s revenue and opportunity base using approximately 8% of our market capitalization," stated Carl Dammekens, CFO of L&H.

"This acquisition represents an important turning point in L&H`s strategic development," said Gaston Bastiaens, president and CEO of L&H. "Dragon Systems is a speech industry leader well known for its technology breakthroughs and its award-winning dictation products. By combining our talent with Dragon Systems we are pooling some of the best speech and language minds in the industry to create speech solutions that are even more user friendly and are applicable for broader, more consumer oriented markets than ever before. We should also be able to speed our time to market with existing projects that to date we have not had the resources to tackle."

"The union of talented minds, visions and technologies that will occur as a result of this acquisition will benefit all parties: L&H, Dragon Systems, the speech and language industry overall and, most importantly, both companies` customers," said Dr. Janet M. Baker, Chairman of the Board and Co-Founder of Dragon Systems. "We expect that combined, the companies will more quickly be able to bring the many benefits of speech and language to a wider variety of devices and broader base of users than ever could have been accomplished by either company alone."

"This transaction is about joining the resources and technologies of two companies with common interests and vision," said Donald L. Waite, Dragon Systems` CEO. "Together, we will be able to offer customers broader solutions while providing greater opportunities for our employees, partners, and shareholders."

Resources to Help Bring Speech to Broad Markets

In particular L&H expects that it will apply its increased research, development and linguistic staff to accelerate work on key projects in application areas that include: handheld/mobile devices, smart phones, automotive, English as a second language, voice to voice translation technologies, wireless communications for Internet and e-commerce, intelligent search engines, multilingual text retrieval systems, and audio mining solutions. In the near term, the company expects to apply the resources to accelerate its time to market for NAK (code-named), its patent-pending, prototype handheld device that utilizes a large vocabulary continuous speech dictation engine and its L&H RealSpeak text-to-speech (TTS) to easily send and receive e-mail, surf the Web and conduct e-commerce transactions.

L&H also expects that it will leverage Dragon Systems` existing resources in the telephony, medical, legal and healthcare applications, allowing L&H to expand its existing offerings and customer base to meet the rapidly growing demand for speech-enabled applications in those arenas. L&H further expects that the many languages that Dragon Systems supports in its continuous speech dictation engine will give L&H immediate access to additional foreign markets for speech, including those in Japan, Italy and Spain.

"With the acquisition of Dragon Systems, L&H clearly advances its voice processing technology. Together with its recently announced acquisition of Dictaphone, L&H now possesses the distribution channels to serve a wider range of applications such as healthcare and legal and has the technology for emerging voice interface and information appliance markets," said Amy Wohl, President of Wohl Associates.

Dragon Systems Brings Customers, Brand Recognition

Dragon Systems will also provide L&H with access to its large customer base, which includes companies such as Bank America, Boeing, Citibank, Compaq, Corel, Dell, Deutsche Bank, Fujitsu, Kaiser Permanente, Peugeot, Seiko, Sony, Toshiba, Wells Fargo and many others. Its strong brand recognition in the United States will be complemented by L&H`s strengths in the U.S. and abroad, particularly in the Pacific Rim and Europe. Dragon Systems will not only bring additional R&D staff to L&H but will augment L&H`s existing lab facilities with research laboratories in the US and Cheltenham, England.

In April of 1997 Dragon Systems introduced the world`s first general purpose large vocabulary continuous speech recognition product, Dragon NaturallySpeaking(R). Since its introduction the product has claimed well over 100 major industry awards worldwide, more than any other speech software product. Dragon holds 35 patents for its speech and language technologies, many of them for technology employed in its Naturally Speaking product family.

L&H will continue to market and support Dragon NaturallySpeaking(R) as well as other products in the Dragon Systems family and the L&H Voice Xpress family of products, providing continuity and support for Dragon Systems customers and strategic partners and allowing the company to focus on a smooth integration of resources and strategies. Over time L&H expects that it will combine the best technologies from each product to create next generation products for consumers.

      Organizational Structure

Following the acquisition, Dr. Janet M. Baker, Dragon Systems` chairman and co-founder, will be nominated to have a seat on L&H`s Board of Directors and become Chairman of L&H`s Technology Advisory Board. L&H plans to retain other key members of the Dragon Systems management team including John Shagoury, Dragon Systems` President, who will play a vital role in the new combined company. Donald L. Waite, Dragon Systems` CEO and Ellen Chamberlain, Dragon Systems` CFO, Vice President of Finance and Treasurer will continue to work with Dragon Systems through the transition period. Both plan to return to their executive positions at Seagate Technologies, Dragons` largest outside shareholder.

L&H has proactively put in place an experienced, carefully chosen integration team, comprised of executive management from each company. The team`s charter will be to focus on a smooth integration of the two company`s combined resources and to continue assessing the challenges and opportunities created by the acquisition. Dragon Systems has 350 employees worldwide with offices in Newton and subsidiaries in Munich, Paris, London and Tokyo.

Die guten NEWS hören nicht auf:

      -----------------
NEWS ---LHSP in virtual news reader called Vandrea...waouw!!!

MAR 28, 2000, M2 Communications - London, England - The Millennium Dome -- Lernout & Hauspie (NASDAQ: LHSP; EASDAQ: LHSP) (L&H(tm)) today announced that its award-winning near human sounding text-to-speech software, L&H RealSpeak has been used by BT to create the world’s first high-resolution virtual newscaster. Developed and launched in association with the UK’s Channel 5 and ITN, the virtual news reader, Vandrea, is based on a digitised scan of the Channel 5
presenter Andrea Catherwood and is capable of live delivery of up-to-date news bulletins and simultaneous access to the latest stories via the Internet.
Vandrea defies the conventional practice of utilising audio and video streaming to deliver moving pictures via the Internet. Instead, almost the entire process takes place on the home or office PC, with the Internet used only to access text from a dedicated Channel 5 news website. This combination allows Vandrea to operate as a full-screen, high fidelity, moving image, which is technically superior to today’s TV images.
Televirtual, a privately owned British company that has pioneered the creation of ’avatars or e-citizens’, has created Vandrea using the latest 3D rendering and lip synchronisation technology and then linked this to the L&H RealSpeak text-to-speech engine. L&H RealSpeak can generate synthesized speech that is almost indistinguishable from human speech and is based on concatenation algorithms, where actual human voice segments are stored and used to convert any text into speech. In-depth language specific linguistic knowledge provides intelligent pronunciation of a wide range of variable input.
Tim Child, Televirtual’s founder, commented: "Vandrea represents a completely new breed of Virtual Newscaster which will not fall foul of the bandwidth restrictions associated with streaming video over the Internet. Unlike conventional TV broadcasts, Vandrea is not limited by geography or reception issues and can be used on a PC anywhere in the world, providing the user has an Internet connection."
Child added: "L&H RealSpeak has set a new standard for synthesised speech and will open endless possibilities in broadcast and entertainment applications where developers can bring speech to animated characters, web sites and children’s toys."
Gaston Bastiaens, CEO for Lernout & Hauspie added: "We are delighted that BT, Channel 5 and ITN have taken the lead in
creating Vandrea, which has opened the world’s eyes to the scope of text-to-speech technology. Vandrea and other virtual newscasters can also be developed for a world stage. By the end of this month L&H RealSpeak will be available in nine languages and by the end of the year we plan to offer twelve."
Text-to-speech (TTS) has been in existence for more than fifteen years. It is commonly used in applications where a large amount of information has to be spoken, or where information changes frequently. It is widely accepted that L&H’s award-winning RealSpeak represents a quantum leap in TTS technology replacing the somewhat ’robotic’ voice that we are all familiar with. L&H RealSpeak is currently being integrated into a whole variety of industry sectors and applications, including: automotive, telecommunications/ call centre, consumer electronics and Internet.
L&H RealSpeak is currently available in American English, French and Korean. By the end of April it will also be available in German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch (Belgium and The Netherlands), Swedish and UK English. By the end this year L&H plans to add Japanese, Mandarin and Norwegian.
To hear the voice of Vandrea and to find out more about L&H RealSpeak, please visit the L&H Web site at www.lhs.com. For further information on Televirtual visit www.televirtual.com

      Auf Deutsch von WO:
      ---------------------

Dann doch lieber was Erzkonservatives wie Sprachtechnologie ;-))

It takes more than a gorilla-sized combination made possible by soaring stock prices to create a certified long-term gorilla.

Case in point: the Lernout & Hauspie (LHSP:Nasdaq - news - boards) acquisition, announced Tuesday, of Dragon Systems. No doubt, this deal combines the Nos. 1 and 2 independent companies in the consumer speech-recognition market. (Dragon Systems has about 48% of the consumer market and Lernout & Hauspie has about 36%. IBM (IBM:NYSE - news - boards) is third with about 15%).

And it comes on the heels of Lernout & Hauspie`s acquisition of Dictaphone, a maker of dictation devices used heavily by doctors.

But size isn`t everything. Speech-recognition technology is developing so fast that there`s a good chance the winning technology is yet to emerge. And we certainly haven`t reached the design-in stage so important to creating and maintaining a gorilla.

For a software company, it`s only when a company`s product is designed into devices in such a pervasive manner that it dominates the market, that the company can reach gorilla status, according to The Gorilla Game. We`re a long way from that stage in speech recognition.

Does all this mean you shouldn`t buy Lernout & Hauspie or any other not-yet certain gorilla, or pass up shares of Oracle or any other gorilla facing potential challenges?

Certainly not. But it does mean you should pay less for companies in these situations than you would for a gorilla such as Cisco. It also means that these stocks require more attention from an investor than those that seem solidly at the top of the heap.

      Company Press Release
Lernout & Hauspie Signs Important Translation, Localization Agreement With Worldmine
One of The Travel Industry`s Fastest Growing Web Sites Will Enlist L&H for Multi-lingual, Multi-Million Word Translation and Localization of Site Content
SINGAPORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 4, 2000-- Lernout & Hauspie (Nasdaq: LHSP, Easdaq: LHSP) (L&H) today announced a significant agreement with Worldmine, one of the world`s fastest growing travel Web sites, under which it will provide translation and localization services for the Singapore-based company`s on-line travel Web site content. The project is large -- more than 270 million words in multiple languages covering 580 travel destinations -- and complex, requiring extensive human translation, machine translation and linguistic expertise. It is a significant localization and is indicative of the company`s deep and broad expertise and leading presence in the localization industry.

As part of the agreement, L&H will initially translate and localize Worldmine`s Web pages into Japanese and German followed by Asian languages such as Chinese and Korean and then European languages. The project will employ a range of human translation services, language tools, memory tools and machine translation software to translate Web content, and will leverage L&H`s linguistic expertise to build travel-specific terminology databases. The terminology databases will be an integral part of the machine translation process and should allow Worldmine to cost-effectively translate the huge volume of material comprising its Web site.

``The explosive growth of e-commerce and the Internet are forcing the continuing globalization of businesses. As a result we are seeing a dramatic increase in the demand for translation and localization services,`` said Florita Mendez, president of L&H`s Globalization and Internet Translation Business Group. ``This increased demand is accompanied by the need for the more sophisticated technologies and expertise which L&H can provide.``

``Non-English speaking Internet users number about 43% of the world`s total,`` said Louis Woo, President and General Manager L&H Asia Pacific. ``This fact, when combined with analyst`s predictions that the number or Internet users worldwide will be over 350 million by 2003(a), presents global communications challenges of unprecedented proportion. Our agreement with Worldmine underscores how localization can help overcome those challenges by making the Internet and all its services accessible, appealing and understandable to users worldwide, regardless of their native language.``

      Worldmine Walking Tour Showcased

During a press conference in Singapore today Mark Weingard, Worldmine founder and CEO discussed the possibility of additional ventures between Worldmine and L&H, including online audio phrasebooks and other innovative technologies such as accessing information from mobile devices.

At the press conference, Worldmine featured a technology demonstration during which a tourist downloaded an MP3 virtual ``Walking Tour`` from the Worldmine Web site onto an MP3 player. L&H technology was then deployed to translate the tour into French and Japanese. The demonstration also included samples of Worldmine Web pages that had been translated into Chinese, Korean and German using L&H technology. Additionally, the demonstration showcased how a user can view a tour from streaming video and have the text read to them in natural sounding speech using the award winning L&H(TM) Realspeak(TM) TTS technology. A sample of the Worldmine MP3 Walking Tours is available on www.worldmine.com.

``To survive in the Internet world you`ve got to be multilingual and you have to ensure that your information is available to everyone,`` said Mr. Weingard. ``L&H provides us with the ability to reach across the globe and the toolset that allows us to communicate.``

      About Worldmine

      PR Newswire - April 05, 2000 14:03

Microsoft Speech SDK Developers to Have Access to Localized L&H Speech Engines

REDMOND, Wash., April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) today announced that Lernout & Hauspie (L&H) (Nasdaq: LHSP; Easdaq) will lead the adoption of the upcoming Microsoft(R) Speech Application Programming Interface (SAPI) 5.0. Under an arrangement that will benefit developers and consumers of speech-enabled solutions, Lernout & Hauspie will work to deliver multilingual automatic speech-recognition (ASR) and text-to-speech (TTS) engines for Microsoft SAPI 5.0. The L&H(TM) ASR1600 automatic speech-recognition engine and the L&H TTS3000 text-to-speech engine, which are used widely by developers for PC and multimedia application development, are planned to be SAPI 5.0-compliant across multiple languages and available through the next release of the Microsoft Speech SDK for development purposes. Developers wishing to commercialize multilingual applications will have the option of obtaining distribution licenses from L&H.

The Microsoft SAPI 5.0 Software Development Kit (SDK) includes the Microsoft SAPI middleware, ASR and TTS reference engines, source files, sample applications, tools and documentation that help both speech engine and application developers build speech solutions.

"SAPI 5.0 is all about making it easier and faster for developers to bring new speech applications to market," said Doug Henrich, general manager of the Speech Product Group at Microsoft. "L&H`s early work in supporting SAPI 5.0 with its speech-recognition and TTS technologies helps ensure much broader market success in delivering speech-enabled applications."

"Our early support of SAPI 5.0, the availability of our engines through the Microsoft Speech Web site, and our ongoing collaboration with Microsoft on the SAPI feature set demonstrate the continuation of our strategic relationship with Microsoft that helps accelerate the worldwide deployment of speech solutions," said Gerald Calabrese, senior vice president of World Wide Sales for L&H.

      L&H`s Speech Engines

The L&H PC/MM ASR1600 engine is a software-only phonetic-speech-recognition engine ideal for multimedia and PC applications. The ASR1600 provides high-quality continuous speech recognition with a spectrum of consumer microphones of varying range. The product is speaker-independent and provides accurate recognition, even in noisy environments, without user training.

The L&H PC/MM TTS3000 engine is a software-only text-to-speech engine with a small footprint that is recommended for PC, multimedia and embedded applications. The high-level engine converts any computer-readable text into intelligible, high-quality synthetic speech. The technology is based on algorithms that store actual human voice segments. In-depth, language-specific linguistic knowledge provides intelligent pronunciation of a wide range of inputted text.

      IDEAS
Speak up, dear. Your computer is listening
      Tom Regan
Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor

It`s early Monday morning. You climb into your car, turn on the engine, and the first thing you hear is, "Good morning, dear." It`s the voice of your wife. Only she`s not in the car. It`s the voice-enabled computer in your car that acts as your personal assistant - you`ve just programmed it with your wife`s voice. After returning the greeting - after all, one has to be polite to one`s spouse, even when she`s computer-generated - you ask for your daily appointments and any important future meetings that week. Your personal assistant says she`ll be just a minute and soon returns with your entire day`s appointments, along with last night`s Major League Baseball scores.

Your first appointment is an important phone call to your distributor in Germany. You voice-activate your cellphone, tell it to turn on voice translation, so when your distributor speaks in German, you hear an understandable and smooth English translation. When you start to talk, your German friend will hear you speaking in German, translated on the fly, in a voice that she`s already chosen to represent all English-language speakers.

      Not science-fiction

Think it`s all science fiction? Read on.

Welcome to the amazing world of voice recognition, one of technology`s most intriguing, most promising, and yet most-challenging new sectors.

The idea behind voice recognition has been around for years. Who isn`t familiar with the image of Captain Picard ordering a cup of Earl Grey, hot. But it wasn`t until 1997, when Dragon Systems introduced Naturally Speaking, the first commercially available continuous-speech software (which means you don`t have to pause between words), that voice-recognition technology became available to the public.

Last week, the field received a dramatic boost when Lernout and Hauspie (L&H) of Burlington, Mass., one of the leading voice-recognition companies, announced that it would acquire Dragon Systems. The move brings together some of the best scientists working on voice recognition, with an eye to getting the technology into as many different computers and Internet devices as possible.

"Frankly, we`ve been challenged because of a lack of manpower," says Bill Destefanis, senior director of project management for L&H. "Instead of competing with each other, we decided to work together because we feel we can get farther that way and faster."

So how realistic is the idea of using your voice to interact with a computer? Very realistic, if you listen to the engineers and scientists at L&H. That`s why the company and its competitors (primarily Philips and IBM) see this emerging technology as one with an incredible "upside."

"We really do see speech being used in common human devices," says Mr. Destefanis. "Just take hands-free dialing. Six states have legislation that mandates cellular phones may only be used in cars if they are done so in a hands-free manner.

"Or take set-top TV boxes. They will be used to drive a fairly sophisticated computer on top of the television that will give people incredible access to information. If we don`t use voice to control these set-top TV boxes, all that remains are those clunky remote controls. People will feel far more comfortable using their voice to program a computer than they will a remote control," he says.

This view is echoed by Ray Kurzweil, one of the most preeminent thinkers in the field of voice recognition. In his latest book, "The Age of Spiritual Machines," Dr. Kurzweil lays out a future where speech will be the primary means of interacting with technology.

"In the next decade, we will see translating telephones that provide real-time speech translation from one language to another, intelligent computerized personal assistants that can converse and rapidly search and understand the world`s knowledge bases, and a profusion of other machines with increasingly broad and flexible intelligence."

But the idea of using your voice as the primary means to interact with either your computer or any Internet device is not endorsed by everyone. For instance, Jeff Hawkins, who designed the original Palm Pilot, is against speech technology. Mr. Hawkins has told the news media that he doubts that users of personal digital assistants will want to use their voice as the primary method of importing data into a PDA.

Another caution comes from Scott Relf, vice president for marketing at Sprint PCS. Currently, Sprint offers a variety of phones that enable people to use simple voice commands to dial numbers already programmed into digital cellphones. Yet Mr. Relf doesn`t see a world that`s completely ready for voice recognition yet.

"The problem is that right now, the technology really doesn`t work well in a small handset," he says. "Meanwhile, our focus groups have shown us that most people learn to type simple text messages in about a month, using the keying-in method. We asked a group of young people in the United Kingdom and Japan to text key in the message, `I have had a brilliant time tonight.` The faster kids were able to do it in 15 seconds."

      The need for speed

Voice-recognition software requires computers with fast processors and a lot of random-access memory. Susan Fulton, an expert on speech-recognition software, says that using speech recognition requires "an investment of both time and money." On her Web site she writes that the minimum specifications that various vendors list are far below optimal. (Most call for about 64 megabites of memory and 200 megahertz.) She recommends a computer with a Pentium 2, 400 megahertz processor, and 128MB of RAM.

The scientists at L&H, in fact, are the first to tell you that technology is currently the biggest drawback to widespread acceptance of voice recognition as an everyday activity.

But they also point out that only two or three years ago, the kind of continuous-speech technology available today wasn`t possible because machines weren`t powerful enough. As processors grow faster and smaller and as memory gets more affordable, voice recognition will become increasingly more accessible.

"Voice recognition touches every part of our lives, moving beyond the desktop," according to Klaus Schleicher, director of product management, L&H`s PC Applications Division. "We see the future as one where people will be able to get information anywhere, and they will be using their voice as the interface to get that information."

      Hi pekingente,

hier erfährst du alles, was Ananova ist:

Ananova looks, acts and behaves like any human newscaster - in fact some might say she has a warmer personality than many of the real ones!

There is no mistaking that she is an artificial computerised creation, with as much in common with Hal from 2001 as Trevor McDonald from the TV.

Ananova is a creature of the Web. She is born of digital DNA - the bits, bytes and data streams of information that course through the veins of the Internet. She sees and hears the vast amounts of news and data pulsing around the world, travelling over networks and bouncing off satellites. The volume of information in the networked world of the 21st Century holds no fear for Ananova.

Lernout & Hauspie - endlich verstehen Computer uns

      Company Press Release
Visteon Corporation and Lernout & Hauspie Announce Their Intent to Create a Joint Venture to Develop Next Generation Speech-Enabled Solutions for the Automobile
      DEARBORN, Mich. and BURLINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 11, 2000--

Leading Automotive Industry Supplier and L&H Plan to Pool Strengths

      to Bring Voice Interface to Growing Speech for Automotive Market;

Plans to Focus on Automotive ISP Solutions and Services

Lernout & Hauspie (NASDAQ: LHSP, EASDAQ: LHSP) (L&H) and Visteon Corporation today announced their intent to create a joint venture dedicated to advancing and accelerating the speech interface in automotive applications. This joint venture will include automotive Internet speech portal services and solutions. The venture plans to leverage L&H`s full range of speech technologies and Visteon`s expertise in automotive speech design and integration to develop voice-enabled solutions for automobile equipment manufacturers and the aftermarket.

L&H will have a 60 percent interest in the venture; Visteon will invest $20 million in the venture, giving it a 40 percent interest. The new company is expected to be jointly managed and draw talent from both Visteon and L&H(TM) resources. The purpose of the joint venture will be to provide a dedicated, single source of high-end, integrated speech products and technology dedicated to the automotive industry. The new joint venture is scheduled to be launched with fifty employees in mid-2000. This approach is intended to give the joint venture the tools needed to quickly come to market with the highest quality and most innovative industry solutions for customers.

Use of the speech interface in automotive devices eliminates the need to manually control many dashboard level instruments, fostering safety by allowing drivers to keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. These benefits, coupled with the ease of use and convenience of a speech interface, are expected to accelerate speech recognition in the automotive market over the next few years.

``The voice user interface will be the primary way of interacting with devices in the automobile and controlling outside communications, particularly as features proliferate,`` noted William Meisel, president of TMA Associates, a speech industry market consulting firm in Tarzana, California. ``The capability is already in a number of luxury cars, proving its feasibility, and it will eventually be a standard feature of all vehicles. In addition, there will be a significant upgrade market as drivers try to make the most of their driving time--both in terms of productivity and entertainment,`` Meisel added.

``L&H sees a tremendous opportunity in speech for the automotive market, particularly in the deployment of an Internet portal for automobiles. By leveraging our talent with Visteon`s extensive automotive expertise and impressive global customer base, we can more quickly penetrate this market and capitalize on this rapidly growing opportunity,`` said Gaston Bastiaens, president and CEO of L&H. ``This joint venture will be the industry`s first entity to dedicate a full spectrum of speech technologies and talent exclusively to the development, design and implementation of speech for the automobile.``

``This partnership with L&H elevates vehicle voice technology to the next level,`` said Peter Pestillo, Chairman and CEO, Visteon. ``It allows us to accelerate voice technology integration into a wider range of complete vehicle systems. Visteon Voice Technology combined with L&H`s speech and language solutions will provide our customers with leading edge voice-enabled solutions in vehicles today.``

The joint venture is expected to further each company`s prior independent efforts to create a wide range of speech enabled automotive solutions to meet the needs of all automobile product manufacturers, integrators and vehicle manufacturers worldwide. Future potential solutions from the joint venture include voice-activated access to dashboard devices such as audio systems, climate control systems, speech-only cell phones and voice-enabled navigation systems. It is also expected the joint venture will create a new automotive ISP focused on solutions and services capable of meeting the information needs of millions of customers. These solutions and services will allow users to access the Internet, conduct searches, make e-commerce transactions and retrieve information - all using conversational speech with support for a variety of languages.

      Hi,
