AlphaServ.com Adds WAP --Wireless Application Protocol-- to NQL; Wireless Reach of Network Query Language now Includes Smartphone, Palm VII Connected Organizer and Other Internet Devices
Tuesday, March 14, 2000 07:33 AM  Mail this article to a friend

SANTA ANA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 14, 2000--The NQL Solutions(TM) division of AlphaServ.com(TM) (Nasdaq/NM:ALMI), formerly known as the AlphaCONNECT(R) Internet division, has incorporated support for the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), the emerging global standard for wireless data communication with handheld devices such as smartphones, into its Network Query Language(TM) (NQL(TM)), extending its wireless capabilities beyond the Palm VII(TM) connected organizer, which was previously announced.
"WAP is a critical piece to NQL`s product strategy," Douglas J. Tullio, AlphaServ.com chairman, chief executive officer and president, said. "We believe that NQL, `the language of intelligent agents,` is an ideal platform for bringing personalized information to wireless handheld computing devices.

"Many of the Web and wireless arena heavyweights, such as Motorola, Ericsson, Amazon.com and AOL have embraced WAP or are offering services using the architecture. NQL`s compliance with WAP broadens its versatility and respective appeal in the marketplace."

Tullio added: "Response during the very early stages of NQL 1.0 has been overwhelmingly positive. The hundreds of downloads and supportive comments and suggestions we`ve received during the pre-release trial period are providing us with valuable user feedback, of which we intend to take full advantage as we ready NQL 1.0 for full-release availability.

"From the trial period, as well as from previous NQL business development activities, we are working with a number of major Internet and Fortune 1,000 companies that are evaluating NQL."

      What is WAP?

WAP is a specification, which enables wireless connection for handheld digital devices to data residing on Web sites, in e-mail systems and on corporate networks.

It is an entire software and communications architecture and is compatible with existing Internet protocols and languages, including HTTP and XML, and most wireless networks that are used by handheld devices such as mobile phones, pagers, two-way radios, smartphones and wireless Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs).

      NQL and WAP

NQL`s support for WAP enables users of the language to create intelligent agent-based applications that are capable of communicating data from Web sites and corporate networks, including e-mail, to any wireless handheld device operating in the WAP environment. NQL facilitates both of the common wireless-device languages, HDML and WML, as well as virtually all common Internet protocols.

Web server applications developed in NQL determine the type of device -- whether it is a WAP smartphone or PDA, a Palm VII connected organizer or a Web browser -- that is requesting information and configure the data into a format appropriate for the respective device.

A Web site using NQL agent applications benefits from having to develop only one configuration for all visitors, saving significant valuable development time.

For example, a sports-news Web site wanting to offer up-to-the- minute scores for a fast-paced sporting event could create an NQL application that automatically retrieves the scores from virtually any type of information source and dynamically presents the information in a single location where all users could access the score.

"When the number of wireless subscribers is expected to increase by 730 percent in the next three years, according to International Data Corp. (IDC), wireless communication has become critical for Web marketplaces and enterprises," Denny Michael, AlphaServ.com vice president of marketing, said.

"Using the efficiency of NQL agents on the WAP standard simplifies the development of seamless, personalized and secure solutions for a rapidly expanding mobile work force, regardless of the platform on which the data resides. WAP compliance is another step for NQL in becoming the `language of intelligent agents.`"

NQL 1.0 is currently available for a 30-day trial in a pre-release version from the company`s Web site at www.nqlsolutions.com. The full-release version of NQL 1.0 is anticipated to be available in four to six weeks. Pricing will be announced at that time.

AlphaServ.com`s NQL Spotlight 2.0 Manages Content From Thousands of Web Sources Simultaneously; New Version of `Content Aggregation Engine` Designed for Large-Scale Web Systems
Thursday, February 3, 2000 07:31 AM  Mail this article to a friend

SANTA ANA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 3, 2000--The AlphaCONNECT(R) Internet division of AlphaServ.com(TM) (Nasdaq:ALMI, news, msgs), which soon will be marketing its technologies under the NQL Solutions name, is Thursday releasing the 2.0 version of its NQL Spotlight(TM) Web "content aggregation" software application.
Designed to automate the compilation of information for Web publishing through its patent-pending use of intelligent agent technologies, the product has new capabilities that expand its versatility for large-scale Web content systems, including Web portals, intranets and e-marketplaces. An online demonstration of the product can be found at www.nqlsolutions.com.

"Our business model is based on providing large quantities of dynamic content to mass audiences in an efficient way," said Kasper Larsen, sales director/partner for Jubii, the leading Web portal in Denmark and a licensee of NQL Spotlight 2.0.

"Spotlight gives Jubii a competitive advantage by automating the acquisition and publishing of fresh content using intelligent technologies. The product is easy to configure, scales to our growing needs and helps us redirect content management labor to more meaningful initiatives."

NQL Spotlight is a software application, which enables users to automate the retrieval and organization of Web content into a structured, common database form, where it can be easily accessed and utilized. It is easily customized and expanded to provide users versatility for their various content management solutions.

Jubii uses the application to create a comprehensive Danish real estate listing, amassing listings from many other sites across the country, and plans other similar services, for its nearly two million users.

Other uses for the product include: intranet development; online news engines; product comparison and cataloging systems for e-marketplaces; and personalized Web services, such as localized travel reports that provide weather, flight schedules, lodging and restaurant guides that match travelers` preferences.

"As an increasing portion of the world`s business is transferred to the Internet, and access to content is further enabled with broadband communications advances, the ability to efficiently manage and publish content will be critical," said Douglas J. Tullio, AlphaServ.com chairman, chief executive officer and president.

"NQL Spotlight is a valuable solution for today`s e-marketplaces and portals, which, according to analyst firm, the Delphi Group, will facilitate $5 billion in global trade by 2002."

The new 2.0 version offers users two new features that facilitate large-scale web content systems: a multi-threading architecture and a Network Query Language (NQL) extension feature. Multi-threading significantly speeds the process of accessing multiple Web sites simultaneously.

Rather than a single software agent accomplishing its content management mission on thousands of Web pages in succession, as many as thousands of agents are launched concurrently to their destinations. Users now can crawl, parse and obtain data from as many as thousands of Web pages accessed in parallel, rather than one at a time, providing an expansive content management platform for large-scale Web systems.

The NQL Spotlight 2.0 application is founded on AlphaCONNECT`s Object Recognition Engine (ORE), one of the company`s multiple patent-pending technologies. Users of NQL Spotlight will be able to extend the capability of the application by integrating its Web-to-database functionality with the multi-platform versatility of Network Query Language (NQL), which places all of the company`s intelligent agent-based tools into the hands of users.

NQL is a development language that is expected to be released the first part of this year. Integrating both NQL Spotlight and NQL, users can access and obtain content from virtually any source and populate the information into virtually any source, while retaining the benefit of NQL Spotlight`s graphical interface. NQL Spotlight also is scalable to support large corporations and large Web systems with high content traffic.

NQL Spotlight is licensed to Web-based operations such as e-integrators, Web portals, search engines and large organizations that require the integration of content between the public Web and private, internal systems. XML aware, NQL Spotlight is available now for the Windows NT/9x platform. For more information visit http://www.nqlsolutions.com.

AlphaServ.com Debuts Network Query Language 1.0; First Availability of New Internet Programming Language Offered in Pre-Release Version Via the Web as a Free, 30-Day Trial
Thursday, February 17, 2000 07:30 AM  Mail this article to a friend

SANTA ANA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 17, 2000--The AlphaCONNECT(R) Internet division of AlphaServ.com(TM) (Nasdaq:ALMI, news, msgs), which soon will be marketing its technologies under the NQL Solutions(TM) name, is introducing its Network Query Language(TM), an Internet software programming language, in a pre-release version.
Designed for developers of Internet software solutions to efficiently create intelligent agent-driven Web applications, NQL(TM) can be downloaded now and tested, with a free 30-day trial, from its Web site at www.nqlsolutions.com. An online demonstration also is available at the site.

NQL, of which a full release 1.0 version is anticipated within 30-60 days, is a new software programming language that is designed explicitly for the development of intelligent agent-based Web applications. The objective of its designers is to provide network and Internet programmers with an efficient tool in much the same concept as SQL offers database programmers.

NQL`s core competencies are Internet and network connectivity, which relates to the manner in which disparate computing systems exchange information between one another; interfacing with communications systems, which link people to machines and people to people; and automating Internet computing.

"We saw a need for a development platform that simplifies the process of building seamless connections between the Web, corporate networks and users," said Douglas J. Tullio, AlphaServ.com chairman, chief executive officer and president.

"The pre-release of our flagship NQL signals a new era for what has been the Internet division of AlphaServ.com. The market for business-to-business software development tools, which, at $5 billion in 1999, is estimated to double each of the following three years, according to the Delphi Group (Boston, Mass.), is where NQL can make the biggest impact. We`re confident about competing in this arena."

In development for the past year, NQL is a scripting programming language, which streamlines the development process and speeds software concept-to-implementation time significantly. NQL, on which a patent is pending, incorporates all of the patent-pending technologies that were invented under the AlphaCONNECT Internet division, including its Web parsing technology and conversion engine.

Encapsulating these technologies and many other capabilities into a programming language enables companies, or the systems integrators serving them, to build and implement customized Web software solutions that meet their specific requirements, without the integration challenges of packaged applications.

As the NQL 1.0 pre-release phase progresses and the full version is made available, the product will be marketed to Internet and systems integrators, information systems departments within Fortune 500 companies, other software technology vendors and Web-based businesses such as e-marketplaces and portals.

The company will provide support for its NQL customers building applications such as content management systems, transaction-based e-commerce Web sites, corporate Web-based information systems, business-to-business e-procurement systems and personalized systems such as mobile/distributed computing solutions.

"Today`s connected world demands that timely, personalized information is found, filtered and made available in the most convenient format -- most often that is the Web, and increasingly, mobile devices," said Denny Michael, AlphaServ.com vice president of marketing.

"More of our time will be freed as our regular computing processes are further automated. Agent technologies are the most efficient and reliable means to meet these needs. We believe that NQL is the ultimate agent-building platform for the architects of our connected information systems."

Intelligent agents are software robots, which excel at transcending multiple types of information systems in various locations, especially across the Internet, and performing computing tasks that are inefficient, difficult or impossible to conduct manually.

NQL agents traveling across the Internet conduct users` computing instructions with a level of intelligence, enabling them to interact with, and learn from, other machines and applications. These software servants are often used as "content managers" to filter and personalize the tremendous amounts of information available today, especially over the Internet.

Beginning today, Internet professionals will be able to download the pre-release version of NQL 1.0 on a 30-day trial basis. Following an appropriate pre-release quality-assurance period, during which the company will evaluate feedback from the development community, NQL 1.0 full-release will be made available for license in its multiple forms.

The language will be configured in a Single-user Developer Package; a Run-time Server, on which NQL-driven applications are executed; and a Run-time Workstation, which will operate small-scale applications created with NQL. Pricing will be made available at the time of full release.

Initially, the product will be distributed and supported exclusively via the Web. Technical support is available now via e-mail for this pre-release. At the time of full release, the first phase of an interactive support community for NQL 1.0, facilitating the exchange of application notes and NQL innovations between users and prospective users, will be incorporated into the company`s Web site
