Copper Strike shares soar after find

Shares in newly-listed explorer Copper Strike Ltd have more than doubled in value on the back of a copper find in north Queensland.

Copper Strike, which listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in November, was trading up 20 cents at 38.5 cents by 1431 AEDT on Wednesday, with more than 57.71 million shares changing hands.

The surge comes after Copper Strike said a drill hole at its Einasleigh project had returned an intersection of 50 metres grading 6.65 per cent copper.

Managing director Tom Eadie said in a statement the true width, extent and attitude of the copper mineralisation beneath the early 1900s Einasleigh copper mine was still unknown.

The company is undertaking electro-magnetic tests to trace the deposit to the south, where it believes the bulk of the tonnage lies.

The drill rig is currently drilling nine holes on the Kaiser Bill prospect eight kilometres away.

If you look at todays trade about 75% of shares traded or 52m shares have traded at an average of about 35 cents. Thats 150% of the total shares available to be traded. This will mean that new buyers entering in coming days will have to pay more to entice those that bought today to sell.

Einasleigh resource by year end

A RESOURCE estimate for Copper Strike`s emerging Einasleigh copper project should be available by the end of the year, with the company carrying out EM and being hopeful of sourcing a second drill rig to follow up the sensational results reported earlier this week.

The company`s managing director Tom Eadie told MiningNews.netthe company was using downhole EM surveying to trace the mineralisation due to the constraints posed on drilling by challenging terrain and climatic conditions.

The true width, extent and attitude of the mineralisation are unknown at Einasleigh due to structural complexity.

"We want to extend the EM coverage over south where we believe the bulk of the mineralisation exists," he says.

Further drilling will be carried out once the current drill rig finishes a campaign at the nearby Kaiser Bill prospect – expected to be 3-4 weeks.

The company believes Kaiser Bill has the potential for a sizeable open cut mine of around 10-20 million tonnes grading around 1-2%. Kaiser Bill features an extensive gossan around 1200m long and up to 100m wide.

"Kaiser Bill was rated above Einasleigh before we started drilling [at Einasleigh mine]," Eadie says.

The Einasleigh project, which includes the Einasleigh Copper Mine, Kaiser Bill prospect and Teasdale area covers an area of 393sq.km and is located around 70km southeast of Georgetown in north Queensland.

The Einasleigh copper mine historically produced 130,000 tonnes grading 6% copper, 0.5ppm gold, 30ppm silver and 1.2% zinc.

Meantime, Copper Strike has a 4000m-drill campaign scheduled to start in mid-April at its 325sq.km Walford Creek project north of Mt Isa.

Previous work by WMC at Walford Creek discovered a lead zinc rich stratabound sulphide deposit hosted by a 10km pyrite unit. WMC results included 7.5m grading 6.6% zinc, 9.2% lead and 124gpt gold.

Copper Strike says there is scope for vertical copper cobalt-rich mineralisation, with high-grade copper intersections occurring over a strike length in excess of 4km.

"We are really excited about the Walford Creek project," says Eadie.

Eadie says Copper Strike is in a strong financial position with over $5 million in the coffers. Copper Strike listed on the ASX in November after raising $6.5 million in an initial public offer comprising 32.5 million shares at 20 cents each. Teck Cominco is Copper Strike`s major shareholder with around 10%.

Shares in Copper Strike shares closed Thursday at 32c, which, while well down on the 40.5c high the stock hit on Wednesday, was significantly higher than the 18.5c the stock was trading at at the start of the week.
