Audible`s profit rises, but forecast hits stock

LOS ANGELES, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Internet media company Audible Inc. (ADBL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) on Tuesday posted higher quarterly net income, but warned that higher spending on new initiatives would cut cash flow this year, and its stock fell 33 percent.
Audible`s stock, which rose 1.3 percent to close at $26.70 on Nasdaq, tumbled to $17.86 in after-hours trading.


The Wayne, New Jersey-based company reported fourth-quarter net income of $1.4 million, or 6 cents a share, compared with $24,000, before preferred stock charges, in the same period a year earlier. Revenue jumped 77 percent to $10.3 million.
Audible customers can download and play back best-selling books, consumer and business magazines, newspapers, on-demand radio programs and other content on personal computers, CDs or certain mobile devices, including the Apple iPod Shuffle digital audio player.

In addition to Apple Corp.(AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) , Audible`s business partners include Hewlett-Packard Co.(HPQ.N: Quote, Profile, Research) , Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) and Sony Electronics, part of Sony Corp. (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) (SNE.N: Quote, Profile, Research)

It also has strategic relationships or business partnerships with BBC Audiobooks Ltd., which is part of the British Broadcasting Corp., and Random House, which is owned by German media and entertainment company, Bertelsmann.

For 2005, Audible said it plans to "expand aggressively into new markets," including the launch of operations in Britain, the start of a wireless service and the creation of a unit focused on educational markets -- all in the second quarter. The company also plans to make investments to acquire listeners and improve customer service.

In November, the company launched Audible.de, a service for German-language listeners worldwide.

Audible said it expects 2005 revenue to increase 71 percent to 80 percent to the range of $59 million to $62 million. Pre-tax income was projected at $3.6 million to $4 million, before deducting an expected $2 million expense related to the launch of Audible U.K., and before deducting any charges related to share-based expense.

Capital expenditures for this year are expected to run $2.7 million to $3.3 million, the company said.

Audible also said it expects free cash flow for the year to be in the range of $1.6 million to $2 million, down from 2004`s $4.2 million.
