Located in Canada'sNorthwest Territories, Gahcho Kue is one of the largest new
      diamond projects under development globally
. The project consists of a cluster
of kimberlites, three of which have an indicated resource of approximately
30.2 million tonnes grading at 1.67 carats per tonne (approximately 50.5
million carats) and an inferred resource of approximately 6 million tonnes
grading at 1.73 carats per tonne (approximately 10.3 million carats). Mineral
resources that are not mineral reserves do not have demonstrated economic
      viability.

Ich hatte ehrlich gesagt im Frühjahr bei 2 Pence in london schon den Mut verloren und nicht mehr geglaubt, hier noch jemals Gewinn zu erzielen.

Coastal Energy Plans More Wells Over the Coming Months To Build Up Its Production In The Gulf of Thailand

Coastal Energy, the TSX Venture and London Aim quoted company says in its latest quarterly report to June 30 that: “The second quarter of 2009 was a milestone for Coastal Energy, as it marked the first full quarter of production from the company’s Songkhla field in the Gulf of Thailand”.

It was an important step for the company; apart from anything else Coastal has achieved some meaningful cash flow. But Coastal, which has had some gas production in Thailand for some time, said it wanted to go for the bigger prize of oil. Having achieved this the question is where does it go from here.

Coastal will be presenting at the next oilbarre.com conference on September 15. Doubtless delegates will be told the company’s plans then. The meeting is at The Brewery in Chiswell Street in the City of London, Anyone wishing to attend should register soon on our website www.oilbarrel.com as it looks like being another blockbuster event. Meanwhile this note is by way of a curtain raiser.

The company’s gas comes from a 36.1 per stake in APICO and thus indirectly a 12.6 per cent interest in the Phu Horm field onshore northern Thailand. There are dedicated sales to a power station of around 2,000 boepd, or so, net to Coastal at reasonable prices and thus cash flow .

The Phu Horm field is on Block L15/43. There could be more gas to come as the company has recently announced that it has drilled the Phu Kheng-1 exploration well on Block L27/43 which is close to but not contiguous with Block 15/43. Coastal is the largest holder of Block L27/43 with a 36.1 per cent working interest.

Initial log interpretation confirms that the formation is gas saturated with low porosity and permeability and that further evaluation and testing is required to determine the commercial viability of the well. The operator plans to test the well within the next four to eight weeks subject to work over rig availability.

Coastal has stated in its quarterly report that net average offshore production namely oil, for the quarter was 6,702 barrels a day and net onshore production, namely gas, was 2080 boepd for average aggregate production of 8,782 boepd. EBITDAX of US$ 15 million and US$18.5 million was achieved respectively, for the three and six months ended June 30 2009, meaning there was net income from continuing operations (excluding impairment charges ) of US$3.6 million or US$0.03 per share.

The first point to be made here in answering our own question of what is the way forward, is that impressive though it may be that Coastal has achieved first oil production, it is not quite the level of output as it could have been. Towards the end of 2008, in November, two wells A-01 and A-03 in the Songkhla field in Block G5/D3 had come in at just under 11,000 bpd combined.

A third well A-07 flowed at around 1,000 bpd. This meant Coastal was looking at more than 11,000 bpd from this field, which was an old Premier Oil discovery that was never exploited. This was rather more than expected.

At this point the company began to run into difficulties. Initial sales were limited by the export capacity of a leased shuttle tanker. Then the Mopu (Mobile oil production unit) which was going to be used to step up output was disabled by bad weather. Production was shut down for a period of 47 days. Output was not lost but deferred.

Coastal sees its initial task is to make up this delayed output. Randy Bartley, the CEO told oilbarrel.com that the company’s rig is currently in tow to arrive on location at Songkhla Main (the renamed field) this week. Two development wells and two water injectors are planned to be drilled. The water injectors will help to repressurise and maintain the strong water drive, which will bolster ultimate recovery factors. The injectors will also eliminate water disposal costs.

Following the development programme at Songkhla Main, the rig will commence drilling at the Songkhla B (Lower Oligocene) exploration well. If the well is successful two to four wells will be drilled at Songkhla B.

The second point to be made is that although Songkhla Main did not produce at the rate at first thought, the output did allow for a reserves upgrade. Reserves for the field have, following a new review earlier this year, been put at 41 million barrels based on oil in place. The important figure is that recoverable or 2P reserves have grown from 4.9 million barrels of oil to 9 million barrels. So far the company has extracted 1 million barrels from the Songkhla field.

The Songhkla B field apparently shares some of the characteristics of Songkhla Main, so the company can reasonably hope for a boost to output. Coastal itself has not made any predictions for production but earlier this year broker ThomasWeisall talked of plateau production of at least 14,000 boepd.

Beyond Songkhla there is the Bua Ban field, also in the Gulf of Thailand. This field was originally thought to be larger than Songkhla and though it looks geologically more difficult than the Songkhla field Bua Ban could by 2011, when Songkhla starts running down, maintain the plateau level of output at 14,000 boepd or more.

For the moment the company is saying: “Coastal Energy is entering an exciting period and we are optimistic about our offshore development programme and the potential value it could add to the company. We expect the second half of the year to bring further progress in the development of our offshore assets and further success for Coastal”. The company has around US$ 15 million and the cash flow from operations so can meet its planned drilling costs

Again, as with production levels, the company itself has not made any precise announcements about its financials but the Thomas Weisal report which was issued in March this year said: “On its 2008 price deck of US$47 a barrel for Brent, US$43.50 a barrel for Dubai based on an assumed US$4 barrel Brent – Dubai spread, we estimate Coastal will generate US$56 million in operating cash flow in 2009, assuming that Songkhla can indeed maintain production of at least 11,000 bpd. Well the company is now realising US$65 a barrel for its oil. So we shall see what happens over the coming months.
