      Buffett tours Canada's oil sands
      News wires - 22.08.08

US billionaire investor Warren Buffett toured Canada's oil sands with friend Bill Gates this week to understand how the resources are developed, but said he had no plan to buy into the sector.

In an interview on CNBC television, Buffett said he and the Microsoft co-founder discussed their interest in the oil sands a few months ago, and agreed they would get a better education with a first-hand look than just reading about it.

The visit on Monday led some in the Canadian oil and investment industries to speculate that Buffett, chairman of conglomerate Berkshire, and Gates could be readying to invest in the oil sands.

But Buffett said he has no "buy order" out, said Reuters.

The oil sands of northern Alberta represent the largest deposits of crude outside the Middle East and are seen as a major source of secure oil supplies for the US.

Buffett and Gates toured Canadian Natural Resources C$9.3 billion (US$8.9 billion) Horizon oil sands mining and synthetic crude processing operation, which is due to start production later this year.

It will be the fourth major oil sands mining venture, following those run by Syncrude Canada, Suncor Energy and Shell.

The tycoons also visited an in situ oil sands project. Buffett did not say which such operation he toured.

No matter how efficient oil sands operations are, oil prices -- and the ability to make long-term price forecasts -- will be the biggest factor in their profitability, he said.

Wits Basin Signs Iron Ore Definitive Purchase Contract
      MONDAY, AUGUST 11, 2008 8:09 AM
      - BusinessWire
MINNEAPOLIS, Aug 11, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Wits Basin Precious Minerals Inc. (WITM) is pleased to announce the signing of purchase contracts for the acquisition of a producing iron ore mine, a separate, nearby drill-indicated iron ore resource, and a processing plant located near Maanshan, Anhui Province in the People's Republic of China.

The producing mine and the drill-indicated resource total more than 94 million tonnes of magnetite iron ore. The processing plant is now producing up to 1,700 tonnes per day of iron ore concentrate that averages 62% Total Iron (TFe). All concentrate now being produced is sold directly to nearby steel mills at negotiated spot prices. Wits Basin is planning a staged increase in production.

The purchase price and terms materially conform to previously announced terms and conditions. The payments are subject to confirmation of permits and ore rights and other such ordinary and customary required due diligence rights.

In related news, the Company has engaged Loong Keat Tan, a former Rio Tinto mining executive on an exclusive, full-time basis. Mr. Tan served Rio Tinto for 21 years, serving as General Manager of world class projects including Hamersley Iron's Mount Tom Price Operations in Western Australia and Bougainville Copper Ltd.'s mine in Papua New Guinea. He also served as head of Rio Tinto Asia's Hong Kong office and Rio Tinto's Beijing Representative Office.

"Wits Basin continues to make significant progress in securing a project that is revenue producing and cash flow positive," remarked Wits Basin CEO Stephen D. King. "We are excited to be moving to the next step in acquiring this China-based iron ore business."

      Hallo zusammen!

      Bin knapp an Zeit...
Sollte also kein Scam, sondern wahr sein.

      Severstal Resources Buying PBS Coals
      By Canadian Press - 22 Aug 2008 at 09:04 AM GMT-04:00

Russian conglomerate OAO Severstal (SVS) plans to acquire a $1.3-billion Pennsylvania coal business through a transaction that involves the purchase of a Canadian-listed corporation.

      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TORONTO (CP) -- Severstal Resources is offering $C8.30 per share for Penfold Capital Acquisition Corp. (PNA.P), which is listed on the TSX Venture Exchange, in order to acquire PBS Coals Corp., which mines metallurgical and thermal coal in Pennsylvania.
PBS Coals is a private company registered in British Columbia.

The chairman of the PBS board, Colin K. Benner, said the company's directors support the Severstal takeover offer, which requires numerous approvals.

Holders of approximately 71.5% of the shares of PBS Coals Ltd. have agreed to tender their shares into the offer

PBS has agreed to pay a break fee of $C41.9 million to Severstal in certain circumstances and has granted Severstal the right to match competing offers.

      Eine weitere Zink-Mine wird geschlossen:

HudBay Closing Balmat Zinc Mine, Concentrator
      By Canadian Press - 22 Aug 2008 at 06:22 AM GMT-04:00

HudBay Minerals Inc. (HBM) said that it plans to close its Balmat zinc mine and concentrator in New York, a move that will affect about 200 workers.

      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TORONTO (CP) -- Operations are expected to stop on Friday.
A small group of employees will be retained to keep the facility on care and maintenance.

HudBay said it does not expect to incur significant costs associated with closure.

The company's zinc production for 2008, including Balmat's contribution through the first eight months of the year, is now expected to be at the lower end of its earlier production guidance for 120,000 to 150,000 tonnes of zinc.

The company blamed lower prices for zinc, continued high operating costs and general inflationary pressures for the closure.

The Balmat mine was reopened in 2005 based on a feasibility plan that assumed lower costs and higher levels of production than were achieved to date.

      Zum Thema Eisenerz:

BHP-Rio deal could push up iron-ore prices ‘significantly’ – regulator
      22.08.08

Australia’s competition watchdog warned on Friday that a merged BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto might be able to, and want to, influence global iron-ore supply and prices.

This could lead to steelmakers paying “significantly” higher prices for the raw material, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) said.

BHP Billiton, the world’s biggest resources company, formally launched its all-share takeover bid for rival Rio Tinto in February, which the smaller company snubbed as not reflecting its true value and future prospects.

The ACCC said it would receive submissions regarding the proposed merger until September 5, with the intention to announce its final view on October 1.

So far, BHP Billiton has received US regulatory approval, and has begun the filing process to get clearance with China’s Ministry of Commerce.

The resources multinational had already filed for clearance in the European Union, the US, Canada and South Africa, and would file in Taiwan, Korea and Japan at a later date.

On Monday, BHP Billiton said that its proposed takeover “makes more sense than ever”, and that his company was hard at work trying to make it happen.

“It’s a situation of two plus one equals five,” he said, presenting a record set of results, which were important to the success of the bid.

Rio Tinto CEO Tom Albanese is preparing to present his company’s results for the half-year to June 30 on Tuesday next week, which the market will be watching closely.

      Westgold
