SunEdison Has Layoffs Too; About 50, Says Former Employee January 10, 2009 at 2:54 PM

After posting a story about Optisolar, the solar panel maker that also wants to build and run utility-scale power parks, laying off 300 employees (about half of its staff) we received a message from a former employee of SunEdison, the power provider based in the East.

In December, the company laid off around 50 to 65 employees, according to the source. The source is good in this situation — he’s one of the employees who was laid off. He said the company officially told him the cuts came to around 50 people, but the company grapevine put it closer to 65.

Because SunEdison’s business is governed by signing big power providing agreements, it is affected by the credit crunch. After all, the company doesn’t sell equipment to customers. It only sells power. SunEdison (or its partners) thus have to put up the capital.

We will try to get more from the company next week. The former employee, by the way, added that SunEdison treated him fairly in the process and that he does not harbor any ill will.

Alternative energy remains one of the few, if only, segments in the tech economy still attracting investors, but the tough times are still hitting it hard. Besides the layoffs at Optisolar and SunEdison, Pacific Ethanol temporarily shut down its 40 million gallon a year plant in Madera, Calif.

National Semiconductor and SunEdison Initiate Trials to Optimize Output of Solar Arrays

May 28, 2009 - National Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE:NSM) and SunEdison LLC, North America’s largest solar energy services provider, have initiated field trials to optimize the energy output of solar arrays.

SunEdison has initiated field trials in California using National Semiconductor’s SolarMagicTM power optimizers. National’s SolarMagic power optimizers enable individual solar panels to maximize energy-produced independent of performance of other panels in an array. Individual panels can often under-perform due to shade, debris, panel mismatch or aging.

SunEdison delivers solar energy services to utilities, commercial and government entities by providing a new way to engage in solar energy. The company’s customers pay only for the energy produced by its solar power plants. In March of 2008, the company surpassed 100GWh of delivered energy, marking a new milestone for solar energy services in the North American marketplace.

“We’re delighted to be working with SunEdison” said Brian Halla, National Semiconductor’s chairman and CEO, “SunEdison services architecture delivers industry leading reliability, with more delivered energy, resulting in greater customer savings. We believe our SolarMagic power optimizer will further strengthen the SunEdison service architecture.”

Added Brian Jacolick, GM of the America’s of SunEdison, “SolarMagic promises to offer a significant breakthrough on delivered energy for solar arrays. The net effect will be greater savings for our customers. National Semiconductor’s leadership in analog and power management will serve SunEdison well as we build on this strength to make continued improvements for the solar industry.”

      About SolarMagic Power Optimizers
To maximize the energy output of each solar PV panel in the array, National Semiconductor has developed SolarMagic power optimizers, which enables each solar panel to produce the maximum energy regardless of whether other panels in the array are under-performing due to mismatch. SolarMagic technology maximizes the energy harvest of each individual PV panel through advanced algorithms combined with leading-edge mixed-signal technology, thereby recouping up to 57 percent of the lost energy due to mismatches. SunEdison sets future trend in solar plant monitoring and management
      11 June 2009 | By Mark Osborne | News > Power Generation

As the number and size of utility-scale photovoltaic plants increases, greater emphasis will be placed on managing and monitoring PV power plants to ensure optimum performance and the required ROI. SunEdison, North America’s largest solar energy services provider is doing just that with the announcement that it has opened the first dedicated Renewable Operations Center (ROC), located in SunEdison offices at the McClellan Air Force hangar. The ROC is designed as the hub for SunEdison solar fleet performance data analysis, PV solar energy system monitoring, remote diagnostics, and automated service dispatch.

“Our goal is simple – deliver more energy and thus more savings to our customers and greater returns to investors,” noted Mark Culpepper, CTO of SunEdison. “The ROC enables SunEdison to manage remote diagnostics and, as needed, quickly dispatch local service crews in a matter of minutes. The ROC goes far beyond monitoring, creating visibility and transparency in solar energy delivered across any utility’s service territory.”

According to SunEdison its 60MW of systems under management performed at over 100% of expected electricity generation in 2008. The utility noted that IEA data indicated that an average PV system would typically under-perform by as much as 13%.

The control and monitoring technology deployed by SunEdison also provides greater transparency into the delivery and measurement of solar energy for both provider and customer, an area that will grow in importance as grid-parity looms.

SunEdison and Procter & Gamble (P&G) have inaugurated a 1.1 MW photovoltaic solar system at Procter & Gamble's paper products manufacturing plant in Oxnard, Calif.

The roof-mounted system is projected to produce more than 1.9 million kWh of solar energy during its first year of operation. P&G signed a 20-year solar power services agreement with SunEdison. Electricity from SunEdison will be purchased by P&G at long-term, predictably priced rates, the companies state.

SunEdison installs Enphase microinverter systems in New Jersey commercial solar project
      18 November 2009 | By Tom Cheyney | News > Power Generation

Enphase Energy has scored another commercial-scale installation of its photovoltaic microinverter system, this time at a recently commissioned power plant in New Jersey developed, built, and managed by SunEdison. The project represents the first time that the two companies have partnered.

“SunEdison chose the Enphase microinverter system for its reliability, system availability, and easy integration with our SEEDS [SunEdison Energy and Environmental Data System] monitoring and controls platform,” said Mark Culpepper, CTO of SunEdison. “The site has been running for three months…at an operating performance ratio of close to 120%. It’s one of the best-performing sites in our fleet.”

Enphase microinverter systems, which convert the DC output of a single PV module into grid-compliant AC power, provide several advantages over traditional inverters, according to the company. These include an increase in energy harvest of up to 25%, high system reliability, and simple and safe installation. Balance-of-system (BOS) and labor costs can be reduced by 10-15% compared with systems installed with central inverters.

The specific location and size of the New Jersey installation has not been divulged, although Raghu Belur, Enphase’s VP of marketing, told PV-Tech that it was “a midsize commercial system of less than 100KW,” financed with a power purchase agreement. He said hundreds of 60-cell crystalline-silicon modules, with STC ratings of more than 200W, were used for the arrays.

He explained that SunEdison has shown “a high level of interest in doing more installations” with the microinverter systems, and that the two companies, who worked together on the New Jersey project for nearly a year, are in active discussions. “The next installation is more about finding the right project and committing to it.”

While Enphase is best known for its initial success in the residential market, the company has been “doing a number of commercial installations, bigger and bigger installations, over the past year,” Belur said. “We have a 120KW system running right now, and a 250-300KW system under construction.”

Noting that demand for the microinverter systems “has far, far exceeded our expectations,” the Enphase VP said that “every month is a record month for us in shipments. We’re shipping tens of thousands of inverters every month.”

Enphase recently announced a new product optimized for commercial installations, the D380 TwinPack. The unit is comprised of two microinverters in a single enclosure and an innovative cabling system, which is said to further reduce BOS costs and installation time. The new devices are undergoing field testing and are expected to be commercially available in Q1 2010.
