For a glimpse of how much longer this year’s energy crunch is going to last, look no further than the European natural gas market.

Forward prices have more than doubled over the past month, with traders betting the unprecedented squeeze will last into early 2023. Gas will be expensive even when the weather is hot. Prices for the summer exceeded 100 euros ($113) a megawatt-hour this week, the highest on record.

Europe is facing an energy crisis, with Russia curbing supplies and nuclear outages in France straining power grids in the coldest months of the year.

And there’s no relief in sight. Germany said Russia’s controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline won’t be approved in the first half of 2022, a move that will probably keep supplies capped in the summer, when Europe need gas to fill storage sites.

“Help does not appear to be on the way,” said Kaushal Ramesh, a senior analyst at consultants Rystad Energy in Norway. The increase in forward prices is “suggesting another year of volatility and a continued high price environment.”

Geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine are also keeping traders on edge, with heightened concerns about a possible invasion. At his annual press conference on Thursday, President Vladimir Putin didn’t directly mention the threat of military action, but said an expansion of North Atlantic Treaty Organization expansion up to Russia’s borders was unacceptable.

While a flotilla of liquefied natural gas tankers is currently heading to Europe, the region will remain at the mercy of global markets to ensure it continues to get cargoes throughout next year.

Prices also gained as gas surged after shipments from Russia via a key pipeline reversed direction, with gas flowing eastward towards Poland instead. That’s making it harder for Europe to rely on the fuel to make electricity.

Börse Online spekuliert im Heft von heute, dass bereits im Januar ein Beherrschungsvertrag oder eine Verschmelzung mit Fortum angekündigt werden könnte. Rubrik Börsengeflüster Überschrift "Abfindungsangebot von Fortum schon im Januar?" (Mit Verschmelzung ist wohl ein verschmelzungsrechtlicher Squeeze-out gemeint.) Unipers Kraftwerke seien wertvoller geworden, die Abfindungshöhe könnte positiv überraschen.

German utility Uniper SE said it doubts whether Russia’s Nord Stream 2 pipeline will be able to resolve Europe’s natural gas crisis.

It’s “questionable” whether the long-awaited pipeline, which will bring gas directly to Germany, will be able to balance the market, Chief Financial Officer Tiina Tuomela said Friday.

Uniper is helping to finance the new link, which is completed but awaiting approvals to start shipping.

“Clearly, it would help, but the picture is more complex,” Tuomela said on an analyst webcast after Uniper reported earnings. It “depends also on what kind of winter -- how demand, supply overall will develop.”

Gas prices in Europe have quadrupled this year as the economic rebound sent demand roaring ahead of supply. Limited shipments from Russia, together with intense competition for cargoes of liquefied natural gas, have hindered the region’s ability to replenish depleted stockpiles ahead of the heating season.

“We saw in the third quarter very little LNG coming to Europe,” Tuomela said, after Uniper confirmed its global commodities arm sent more LNG to Asia in the period.

Uniper’s adjusted earnings jumped 52% in the first nine months of the year as its trading business was buoyed by rising prices.

The company nevertheless had a high carbon bill following a 21% surge in emissions as it ramped up coal- and gas-fired power output amid the energy squeeze.
