Japan Cos. Ally for Interactive TV

TOKYO (AP) - Three major Japanese electronics companies including Sony Corp. (NYSE:SNE - news) are planning a joint venture to develop interactive services for digital television, a Sony spokesman said Monday.

The maker of the PlayStation video console is completing details of the venture with Toshiba Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., said Sony spokesman Hiroaki Komatsu without giving details of the services that will be offered.

Japanese media reports say that the new venture will be set up this fall and develop a wide range of services for digital TV broadcasts, including teleshopping and on-demand music and video games.

By working together, the three can share development costs and present consumers with a single standard for interactive TV technology.

``I think that the overall lesson is that it`s better to grow the pie than it is to fight over market share at this point,`` said Paul Smith, a media analyst at HSBC Securities in Tokyo.

The backers of the planned interactive TV venture have already joined forces to design receivers for digital TV, whose popularity is expected to flourish in Japan at the end of this year.

That`s when the nation`s big five commercial TV networks will start offering regular digital programming using a recently launched broadcast satellite. The service began on an experimental basis last month.

Just last week Sony bough a 10 percent stake in Tokyu Corp., one of Japan`s largest cable TV operators, saying it plans to distribute game software and offer other services over Tokyu`s network.

Analysts say that interactive services may encourage large numbers of Japanese viewers to upgrade their TV equipment. Most Japanese households still have access to only a handful of analog channels. About one in three have satellite TV dishes, and only one in six are wired for cable.

The growth of the market for interactive TV will probably depend on how fast prices come down.

``I think that the concept of interactive television is going to be very hot - that`s the good news,`` said Smith. ``What I am worried about is the cost of the hardware.``

Matsushita, Sony und Toshiba haben allesamt Verträge mit Spyglass bzw. OPTV, da würde sich ein Großauftrag doch anbieten, oder ???

da hoffe ich mal mit, auch wenn bis 60 oder gar an die 90 $ noch ein weiter Weg ist - und dabei ist das ATH noch nicht so lange her.

Für mich heißt dies auch, daß der Kauf von SPYG durch OpenTV vielleicht doch Sinn zu machen beginnt, nachdem es ja seit längerem so aussah, daß SPYG alleine erfolgreicher gewesen wäre.

Der Termin für die Abstimmung bezüglich des Mergers ist am 24. Juli. Das proxy material ist bereits rausgeschickt worden. Am 24. Juli findet dann die Aktionärsversammlung statt. Bis Ende des Jahres muß der Merger vollzogen sein, anonsten ist er gescheitert.
Soviel für den Augenblick.
Aber wieso müßten die news vor der Abstimmung rauskommen ???

Optv / Spyg steht nun vor der 38 Tage Linie was jedoch kein großer Wiederstand sein sollte. Hatten wieder steigende Umsätze und zum Schluß lagen sie 2,5 % im Plus.

OpenTV Signs Exclusive Partnership With Interactive TV Games Pioneer; Interactive TV Offers Viewers an Alternative to PC and Console Games

Im Übrigen kommen die Zahlen am 19.07.00 raus.
Nicht zusammen mit OPTV, das würde auch noch keinen Sinn machen, da über den Merger erst am 24.07.00 endgültig entschieden wird.

Das Gerücht mit der Spielekonsolenfirma hält sich seit längerem, wnn es auch nicht besonders stark ist. Der starke Kursanstieg vorgestern war darauf zurückzuführen, daß Cisco 100 Mio. $ in Liberate, einen Konkurrenten von OPTV, investiert hat und daher alle eine neue, gute, lukrative Zukunft für den ITV-Sektor sehen.
Außerdem halten sich hartnäckig Gerüchte, daß OPTV einen großen Deal mit einem US-CABLE-operator machen soll.

Lassen wir uns überraschen !!!

In welchem Zeitraum sagt er allerdings nicht.

Nasdaqdancer, bitte tu mir hier nur einen Gefallen: spiel Dich hier nicht als neuer Guru auf, von wegen und "wer meiner Empfehlung gefolgt ist, hat schon soundsoviel gemacht". Das ist Blödsinn, Du bist nämlich nicht der Einzige, der die empfohlen hat (grins).
Außerdem möchte ich Dich bitten, Statements wie "dann bekommen sie noch ein paar strong buys" mit fundierten Quellenangaben zu unterstützen. Sonst bringen sie nämlich genausoviel wie die Aussage "die steigen um 1000 %, weil die so toll sind, vertraut mir einfach mal".

Ach ja: es heißt wirklich tenbagger, heißt Kursanstieg um 1000 %.

Hy, schlagt Euch bitte nicht. Empfehlung hin und Empfehlung her:
ich hatte diese Aktie aus der investorworld(war im Jan.oderFeb. ein winziger Artikel drin)
Hatte damals zu 54 $ gekauft,bei 75$ nochmal nachgekauft und tatsächlich mit dem größten Teil
zu 91$ raus und das innerhalb von 4-6Wochen.Bin jetzt in foher Hoffnung wieder investiert
und hoffe wenigstens wieder auf die 90-100$,wenn es denn 1000% werden ist mir das auch recht.
Weiß denn schon einer ahnungsweise zu welchem Preis OPTV übernehmen will. Das mit den 110$ war wohl nur
ein Rechenexempel??????.Es sollte doch ein Preis von ca.72% des OPTV-Preises sein??
Wobei die Absegnung fehlt ja bis heute(kommt wohl jetzt Ende Juli)!

Heute haben OPTV und SPYG ihren Merger (für Dich: zwei Firmen gehen zusammen, wobei die eine die andere bescheißt) beschlossen. Das scGdogt die Wallstreet so sehr gemocht zu haben, daß die Leute einfach mal ein bißchen OPTV gekauft haben (ach, und nebenbei hat Spyglass heute ein reseller-agreement mit NEC abgeschlossen, aber das ist nur eine unbedeutende japanische Firma, nicht viel drüber zu berichten, nur ein paar Mrd. $ Umsatz ...).
Wie immer gilt: vorher mal auf den Finanzseiten (und wenn es nur Yahoo ist) schauen und dann erst posten !!!

ich komme ersz gerade von der Arbeit heim. Jett haben wir wenigstens Klarheit, daß der Merger durch ist (und zwar mit großer Mehrheit, wenn man den offiziellen Zahlen glauben darf).
Diese Sicherheit wird jetzt mit steigenden Kursen quittiert. Auf lange Sicht sehe ich OPTV als Buyoutkandidat, also unbedingt halten ! Warum Buyout ??? Weil sich die großen TV-Firmen (Cable und Satellite) um Inhalte und v.a. um die Technik bemühen müssen, um ihre Kunden in dem (und das ist mittlerweile allgemein anerkannt) Zukunftsmarkt ITV ausreichend versoregn zu können.
Übrigens; Nasdaqdancer: ich bin nicht unfehlbar und mir können sicher auch viele das Wasser reichen. Ich wollte Dich auch nicht blöd ansägen, aber ich dachte nur, ein bißchen auf dem Teppich bleiben ist schon besser ;-)

Ok Bruder / Analyst ,sag mir mal was zu Etoys.com
Könnten in 2-4 Wochen voll durch die Decke gehen!

Hallo Nasdaqdancer,

also, was Etoys angeht: ich habe mich mit der Firma noch nicht intensiv beschäftigt (weil sie mich bisher einfach nicht interessiert hat). Also hier keine fundierte Analyse von mir erwarten !
Nur ganz kurz: wie kommst Du darauf, daß Etoys durch die Decke gehen wird ??? Hast Du Dir mal den Kursverlauf angesehen (von 86 $ auf jetzt ca. 5 $) ??? Das hat seinen Grund. Etoys ist eine der Firmen, die nicht profitabel arbeitet, weil die Konkurrenz im Ecommerce einfach zu groß ist. Es werden nur Ecommerce-Firmen überleben, die sich einen Namen machen können. Sich einen Markennamen zuzulegen und diese Marke dann bekannt zu machen, kostet aber sauviel Geld (siehe Amazon) !!! Und da Etoys mehr Geld für Werbung ausgeben müßte, als sie überhaupt Umsatz machen, um einigermaßen bekannt zu werden (ist halt so). Die Investoren sind aber nicht bereit, in diesen Zeiten, in denen zunehmend auf Profitabilität geachtet wird, einer recht unbekannten Firma wie Etoys (unbekannt, wenn man Amazons Markenname mal als Maßstab setzt, und die bekommen schon nur noch schwerlich Kredite) das Geld nur so hinterherzuwerfen. Deshalb wird Etoys meiner Meinung nach immer weniger Geld aufbringen können und irgendwann im Meer der Konkurrenz untergehen.
Die einzige Chance für Etoys besteht darin, daß eine größere Firma sie aufkauft und Du ein schönes Premium bekommst. Für größere Firmen (wie Amazon) könnte Etoys wegen des bereits aufgebauten Kundenstammes interessant sein (ließe sich gut in größere Strukturen implementieren).
Das soll es zu Etoys gewesen sein, ist (oder war) ja schließlich ein Spyglass-Board. Goodbye Spyglass, ich werde Dich vermissen ...
