Cisco to cut 2,000 jobs
A sharp downturn in business means
computer network giant will shed staff
March 9, 2001: 5:28 a.m. ET
PALO ALTO (Reuters) - Cisco Systems Inc, the once fast-growing computer
networking company, is planning to cut five percent of its staff in the coming
weeks to adjust for a sharp downturn in business, a source close to the
company said late on Thursday.
The cuts, affecting Cisco`s full-time salaried employees, will come on top of a
hiring freeze and some substantial cuts in its team of contract workers that
have been made over the past several weeks, the source said.
A spokesman for Cisco confirmed the company was taking cost cutting
measures and had slashed its travel budget. But he said Cisco typically loses
about five percent of its workers each year through normal attrition.
"It is normal during these business times to aggressively manage expenses,
and that includes temporary workers, contractors and holding down travel
costs, which will be cut 60 percent," he said.
Cisco currently has a total head count of 48,000, which includes about 5,000
temporary workers. Like most Silicon Valley companies it keeps a large base
of short-term contract workers to provide flexibility in expanding and
contracting with economic trends.
However, if the company were to aggressively cut contract jobs, it could work
out to more than five percent of its total staff being cut. Although employees
have not been formally notified of any coming job cuts, management has
already suggested such a plan was in the works, sources said.
During a recent address to employees, Cisco Chief Executive John Chambers
was asked specifically whether the company would follow so many other
high-tech businesses that have trimmed their work forces in response to the
weak economy.
"His answer was that in any organisation there is usually about five percent of
the work force that is not in the appropriate position," the source said.
Cisco, which makes the equipment that powers the Internet, warned last
month that it was experiencing a slowdown in sales.
It joins a large group of high-tech companies that are cutting expenses,
including chip maker Intel Corp, which Thursday said it would cut close to six
percent of its work force

Intel warns, downsizes
Chip leader further lowers financial bar,
eliminates 5,000 jobs
March 8, 2001: 6:37 p.m. ET
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Intel Corp., the No. 1 supplier of computer chips, said
late Thursday that its sales in the current quarter will be down about 25
percent from the previous quarter and it will eliminate 5,000 jobs as it moves to
rein in costs.
Previously, Intel had told the Street to expect a sequential revenue decline of
about 15 percent, a target that itself was below recent expectations.
In addition, Intel (INTC: Research, Estimates) said its gross margin in the
current quarter will be about 51 percent, compared with its previous estimate
for a gross margin of 58 percent.
At the same time, Intel said its expenses during the quarter are now expected
to be down approximately 15 percent from the fourth quarter. This is an
improvement over the previous expectation that first-quarter expenses would be
approximately flat with fourth-quarter expenses of $2.4 billion, primarily due to
lower revenue and profit-dependent expenses as well as cost-cutting
measures.
Shares of Intel rose 31 cents to
$33.25 in Nasdaq trade ahead of
the news, which was released
after the closing bell. They
tumbled $2.41 to trade 7.2 percent
lower at $30.84 in after-hours
trade.
The 5,000 job cuts, which
represent about 5.9 percent of the company`s total work force, are expected to
take place over the next nine months and will be primarily through attrition,
Intel said.
The job cuts, part of a range of cost-cutting measures executives unveiled last
month, exclude any personnel additions from potential future acquisitions.
Faced with a sudden and substantial decrease in demand for its products, Intel
late last month implemented a range of cost-cutting measures. In addition to
the job reductions, Intel said it is deferring pay increases for employees and
reducing discretionary spending.
But at the same time, the company announced plans to step up capital
spending in 2001 to $7.5 billion from $6.5 billion in 2000. Meanwhile, research
and development spending in 2001 will be roughly $4.3 billion, compared with
$3.9 billion in 2000, Intel executives said.

Degussa, Daimler-Chrysler, Kali+Salz, BijouBrigitte, Unilever,
Heidelberger Zement, MVV-Energie wieder mit schönen
Wachstumswerten ergänzen:
Sun, Cisco, Nokia, Siemens, SAP.
und mit ein paar Optionsscheinen = Aktien von
z.B. CMRC, JDSU u.ä.
Viele Grüsse an Dich...

God have no mercy with them ´cause they know exactly what they are NOT doing.
