UPDATE 2-Intel first quarter net plunges 82 percent
TUESDAY, APRIL 17, 2001 6:56 PM
- Reuters
(Recasts, adds details)
By Duncan Martell
SAN FRANCISCO, April 17 (Reuters) - Intel Corp. (NASDAQ NM:INTC) on Tuesday reported a steep drop in first-quarter net income, but the results were slightly better than expected and the world`s No. 1 chip maker offered upbeat comments about the second half, sending its shares higher.
Intel said net income fell 82 percent to $485 million, or 7 cents per diluted share, in the quarter ended March 31, from $2.7 billion, or 39 cents a share, a year earlier, due to weak demand and slowing economic growth. The company, based in Santa Clara, California, said sales in the quarter fell 16 percent to $6.68 billion from $7.99 billion.
Despite a slowing U.S. economy, weakness in other parts of the globe and waning spending on information technology, Intel Chief Executive Craig Barrett said he believes its microprocessor business -- 80 percent of the company`s sales -- has stabilized. And Chief Financial Officer Andy Bryant told Reuters in an interview that he saw "some good signs toward the end of the quarter." Intel`s shares rose to $28.93 in after-hours trading from $26.04 at the end of the regular session on Nasdaq.
"The numbers themselves tell a pretty grim story so if you`re going to hang your hat on this, you have to believe the qualitative commentary rather than the quantitative information," said SG Cowen & Co. semiconductor analyst Drew Peck. "A lot is going to hinge on how much credibility there is in the comments made by Barrett that the microprocessor business has stabilized."
Excluding acquisition-related charges, net income fell to $1.1 billion, or 16 cents a share, for the quarter ended March 31 from $3.04 billion, or 43 cents, in the year-earlier quarter.
Analysts polled by research firm Thomson Financial/First Call had estimated earnings before acquisition-related items ranging from 14 cents to 15 cents a share, with an average forecast of 15 cents. The sales forecast for Intel was $6.59 billion.
"In our microprocessor business, given what we saw happening in March gives us a lot more comfort that we`ll have a pretty normal second quarter and a seasonally strong second half of the year," Bryant told Reuters in an interview.
"The first quarter was difficult at best," Bryant said. "In March we saw a return to the time when customers started ordering new product again."
Intel said that at the end of the quarter, microprocessor inventories were just within its target, while, not surprisingly, inventories of flash and communications chips were above guideline and Bryant expects a rebound later this year, but many are skeptical of a turnaround in that market any time soon.
The company also reiterated its plans to spend $7.5 billion this year on capital spending and $4.2 billion on research and development, which should allow chip-equipment makers to breathe a sigh of relief. Intel is in the midst of changing over its factories to using larger, dinner-plate-sized silicon wafers and moving to thinner geometries on the chips.
On a conference call with analysts and investors, Intel Executive Vice President Paul Otellini said that average selling prices for desktop microprocessors such as its Intel Celeron and Pentium 4 chips were little changed from a year ago.
But he said microprocessor shipments declined significantly and he cited the general economic weakness, particularly in the United States, and bloated microprocessor inventories among its customers who didn`t need to buy new chips from Intel.
"PCs are much less screwed up right now than the wireless and networking areas," said Lehman Bros analyst Dan Niles.
And Bryant said that customers are now coming to Intel wanting chips immediately, suggesting that their inventories are coming back in line with their internal targets.
Since the end of last year, the stock has underperformed the Standard & Poor`s 500 Index by about 4 percent and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index by about 15 percent.

Corporate America dishes out more bad news
By Haitham Haddadin
NEW YORK, April 17 (Reuters) - Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE:CAT - news) and Eastman Kodak Co. (NYSE:EK - news) on Tuesday joined a growing list of casualties from an earnings slump as the slowing economy eroded sales and forced Corporate America to cut jobs.
The rash of downbeat earnings news is expected to continue unabated this week as more than 1,000 companies report first-quarter results. And with analysts hacking away at estimates, full-year 2001 profit growth for America`s biggest companies has now dipped into the negative, according to financial data company Thomson Financial/First Call.
``It looks like a classic, typical profit recession where earnings for calendar year 2001 will be down,`` said David Sowerby, a market strategist at Loomis Sayles, which has about $10 billion in assets. ``The acceleration (of profits) will be not be meaningful until the first quarter of 2002.``
Bleak earnings news also came from Charles Schwab Corp. (NYSE:SCH - news), the No. 1 U.S. discount and online brokerage, forest-products giant Weyerhaeuser Co. (NYSE:WY - news) and drug maker Schering-Plough Corp. (NYSE:SGP - news). The reports helped weigh on Wall Street, which was hit late Monday by a profit warning and a massive layoff announcement by technology leader Cisco Systems Inc. (NasdaqNM:CSCO - news).
The technology-packed Nasdaq composite index declined 13.03 points, or 0.68 percent, at 1,896.54 in late afternoon trading on Tuesday, while the Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI - news) lost 33.38 points, or 0.33 percent, at 10,125.18.
J&J, PHILIP MORRIS SHINE
On a positive note, drug and healthcare products firm Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ - news) and tobacco, food and beer giant Philip Morris Cos. Inc. (NYSE:MO - news) reported solid profits. In the energy sector, Enron Corp. (NYSE:ENE - news) and Dynegy Inc. (NYSEYN - news) also reported solid earnings growth.
But companies that make up the Standard & Poor`s 500 index will see profits fall 1.1 percent for 2001, according to the latest estimates from Thomson Financial, a contrast from 2000, when they showed a year-over-year gain of 16.2 percent.
Low inflation, strong productivity and healthy capital spending were critical elements behind last year`s profit growth, said Sowerby. Also helping was a previously friendly Federal Reserve that had cut interest rates before it began a rate hike campaign in the summer of 1999.
``Now we have a friendly Fed (cutting rates) and low inflation,`` he said, ``what is reducing profitability is the dramatic slowdown in capital spending in companies looking to reduce excess inventory levels in response to reduced demand.``
An average drop of 8.7 percent in corporate profits is seen in the first quarter of 2001 from last year, and second-quarter profits are now seen down 7.5 percent, said Thomson Financial.
While the third quarter is seen flat in terms of profit growth, and the fourth quarter is still expected to be an up quarter, those estimates are likely to come down also if the April to June period turns out to be worse than expected.
KODAK TO CUT 3,000 JOBS
Another stroke in the bleak earnings picture was painted on Tuesday by companies reeling from the slowdown in the world`s largest economy.
Caterpillar, the world`s largest maker of construction equipment, reported a 37 percent decline in first-quarter profits, and camera and film maker Eastman Kodak said profits fell almost in half as it announced at least 3,000 job cuts.
Charles Schwab said first-quarter profits fell 63 percent, as the prolonged stock market slump chased customers away from trading. Forest-products giant Weyerhaeuser Co., locked in a hostile attempt to take over rival Willamette Industries Inc., says quarterly profits before a charge fell about 45 percent from high energy costs and low prices plaguing the industry.
But soaring energy prices continue to be a boon for companies like Enron, which posted better-than-expected first-quarter earnings, and Dynegy, which said first-quarter earnings rose 73 percent.
TECH SECTOR HIT HARDEST
The technology sector, which led corporate profits growth last year, has been hit the worst in 2001. Estimates now for this year`s quarters put profit decline year-on-year at 39 percent, 38 percent, 27 percent and 3 percent, respectively.
For the year 2001, tech earnings are seen off 26 percent from 2000. By comparison, the high-techs collectively posted a whopping increase of 27 percent in earnings in 2000.
Cisco Systems, the top Web gear maker, said it plans to cut 8,500 jobs and report fiscal third-quarter profits far below forecasts as it grapples with slowing economies and flagging telecoms capital spending.
EYES ON THIRD QUARTER
Third quarter profits for the S&P 500 companies are now seen up 0.6 percent, or what Ozan Akcin, equity strategist for global markets at Thomson Financial, calls an ``essentially flat`` reading that may be lowered further.
``The average rate of decline for each quarter was 3 percent but in this first quarter we`ve seen revisions come down 9 or 10 percent`` Akcin said.
The third quarter will be pivotal because if it turns negative then the question will be what will happen to the fourth quarter, he said.
