E*TRADE CANADA TO KEEP SITE OPEN FOR FREE MEMBERSHIPS AS SURVEY SHOWS ONLINE CANADIANS EAGER TO INVEST ON THE INTERNET

Toronto, ON (April 6, 1999) – VERSUS Technologies Inc. (TSE, ME: "V") announced today that it will now keep its E*TRADE Canada website open for free trial memberships. The decision to keep the website open resulted from the popularity of E*TRADE Canada’s first trial membership program begun earlier this year, as well as a recent membership survey showing that online Canadians are eager to explore investing on the Internet.

"Since we opened our site in January for free trial memberships, thousands of Canadians have explored E*TRADE Canada and tried out our investment tools and research," said Colleen Moorehead, President of E*TRADE Canada. "We recently conducted a comprehensive survey of these members to determine their attitudes towards online investing. One of our most striking findings is that 81% of respondents – most of whom don’t invest online currently – say they are likely or extremely likely to invest online over the next year. Clearly, an increasing number of Canadians are ready to invest online, and opening our site is a great way to help them explore the benefits of online investing at no cost and with no commitment."

The survey also asked trial members about the importance of nine different factors in selecting an online investing service. Top factors chosen as extremely important were: Investment tools and research; Security; Trading fees and commissions; and Speed of order execution.

"We’re pleased that the survey confirms our belief that investment tools and research are of the highest importance to many online investors," Ms. Moorehead said. "E*TRADE Canada is increasingly recognized as a destination site for investors seeking advanced financial related content and functionality. Our investing tools are second to none in the industry, including mutual fund research and custom screening, news and analysis from Briefing.com, Java technology for up-to-the-minute quotes and interactive charts, proprietary options investing tools, and a sophisticated portfolio manager that helps track a portfolio and flags news stories about holdings."

Bruce Seago, E*TRADE Canada’s Vice-President of Product Management, added: "Security is also a key focus for E*TRADE Canada. In November 1998, E*TRADE Canada became the first online investment service in Canada to earn the CA WebTrust Seal of Assurance. This seal of assurance informs electronic commerce consumers that E*TRADE Canada maintains strict controls and procedures to safeguard their private information."

With the ongoing membership program, investors will receive a free 60-day trial membership that enables them to try out E*TRADE Canada’s comprehensive investment tools and research for equities, mutual funds and options. Members must sign up as clients in order to trade. Clients can trade up to 1,000 shares for a flat fee of $27 per trade, and also pay no commissions on more than 900 mutual funds.

Key Survey Highlights

More than 18% of trial members responded to the E*TRADE Canada survey. Highlights of results follow.

Of the survey respondents, 58% currently don’t invest online. However, 81% of respondents said they were extremely likely or likely to trade online in the next 12 months.
29% of respondents currently have their primary investment account with a traditional full-service broker. Despite this, 77% of these full-service clients say they are likely or extremely likely to invest online in the next 12 months.
Members were asked to rate the importance of key factors in choosing an online investing service. Top factors considered extremely important are: Investment tools and research; Security; Trading fees and commissions; and Speed of order execution.
Members were also asked how strongly they agreed or disagreed with a series of statements about online investing. Among the key findings:
89% of respondents agreed or agreed somewhat that investing online is more convenient.
72% agreed or agreed somewhat that they get better value by investing online.
Only 17% agreed or agreed somewhat that online investing is confusing and complex.
Only 9% disagreed or disagreed somewhat with the statement that it’s safe to invest online.
Only 16% disagreed or disagreed somewhat with the statement that they can get all the information and research they need online.
