@cmz : Was haelst Du von Actuate ?

      @Eisi Gulb

Borland Software back in black on Q1 revenue rise
SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif., April 25 (Reuters) - Creator of the Delphi computer programming language, Borland Software Corporation <BORL.O> on Wednesday said its first quarter net income rose into the black on the strength of an 11 percent increase in revenue.

Scotts Valley, California-based Borland, now focusing on middleware which lets clients deploy compatible Web-based applications, said net income for the quarter rose to $5.9 million, or 8 cents per diluted share, compared with a net loss of $1.1 million, or 2 cents per share, for the first quarter of 2000.

Borland said its first quarter net income excluding $1.5 million in one-time expenses related to the canceled merger with Canadian software developer Corel Corporation <COR.TO> in the first quarter of 2000, was $400,000, or a penny a diluted share.

The company also said revenues for the first quarter increased 11 percent to $51.7 million from $46.5 million last year, and gross margins improved to 85 percent for the first quarter of 2001 versus 81 percent for the comparable quarter a year ago.

The company said the improvements are due to a shift toward higher-margin enterprise business and improved performance from the company`s services and support organization. Borland said it expects revenues to rise 8 to 10 percent in the second quarter and about 20 percent for the full year 2001.

      Borland kündigt Delphi 6 an

Nokia and Borland Team Up to Enable Development of Wireless Java Applications

New J2ME Development Environment Now Available for Java Enabled Mobile Phones
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 4, 2001--Today at the 2001 JavaOneSM Developer Conference, Nokia (NYSE: NOK - news) and Borland Software Corporation (Nasdaq NM: BORL - news), global leaders in mobility and e-business implementation platforms respectively, announced new Java(TM) technology tools for mobile application developers. This collaboration between Nokia and Borland will significantly advance the market for wireless application development on standard-compliant platforms that expand Java technology to mobile devices.

Borland and Nokia have collaborated to deliver JBuilder(TM) Mobile Set, Nokia Edition - a Java2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME(TM) platform) compliant environment - fully integrated with JBuilder 5, Borland`s leading Java technology development environment, to support software development for Nokia`s Java-enabled phones. Together, JBuilder 5 and JBuilder MobileSet, Nokia Edition include visual design tools for creating mobile applications, device emulation and debugging, as well as all the other standard features offered with the JBuilder development environment.

It is both Nokia`s and Borland`s intention to offer these tools to other manufacturers enabling developers to standardize on one environment for the development and deployment of Java applications across devices from multiple manufacturers. To download these tools, go to the Forum Nokia Web site, Nokia`s online community of more than 400,000 mobile developers, at www.forum.nokia.com and americas.forum.nokia.com. Additionally the tools are also available through Borland`s website at www.borland.com/jbuilder/mobileset.

``It is very simple: The mobile Internet is all about combining the richness of the fixed Internet with the immediacy and convenience of mobility. There is no question that expectations for the mobile Internet are very high,`` said Anssi Vanjoki, executive vice president, Nokia Mobile Phones. ``As market leaders in our respective areas, the teams at Nokia and Borland realized early on that developers needed tools that make it faster and easier to bring wireless applications to the market. By collaborating with Borland, we are able to offer customers the best mobile Java technology development environment in the world.``

Vanjoki added ``We believe the market for mobile applications is boundless, and today`s agreement, which leverages Nokia`s expertise in wireless application software and Borland`s expertise in creating environments for the development and deployment of Java technology applications means the developer community can begin confidently building high quality, standardized and revenue generating applications for the next phase of the mobile Internet. The developer can concentrate on developing compelling applications and spend less time worrying about the intricacies of each device.``

Nokia announced its plans to introduce Java-enabled mobile phones beginning in 2001, and intends to distribute millions of handsets for the mass market during 2002. Phones designed with the Java technology environment enable application developers to rapidly reach a global audience and begin generating revenue.

``Mobile and wireless devices are quickly being embraced and leveraged within mainstream e-business efforts,`` said Mark Driver, research director of Gartner`s Internet and e-business technologies. ``These smaller devices have begun to take on the roles formerly limited to traditional PC platforms and are also enabling new services not possible with traditional IT platforms. Products like MobileSet Nokia Edition will lead to the proliferation of mobile and wireless applications that will run on these smaller devices.``

``Nokia is clearly recognized as the leading manufacturer of the next wave of intelligent mobile devices - the mobile phone transformed into a mobile computer,`` said Borland CEO and President Dale L. Fuller. ``In order to truly make the mobile Internet a consumer friendly experience, the next step is to enable developers around the world to write great software. Nokia and Borland are in a unique position to put all the pieces together to provides the best and easiest to use tools for mobile application developers.``

Java technology efficiently addresses the challenges of mobility for consumers, service providers and developers. An open standard and robust platform suitable for the mass market, Java is one way to implement and distribute services in a fast and cost efficient way. With J2ME platform and the Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP), the best part of Java functionality is made available to mobile devices that have smaller display capabilities and power resources than a PC. The J2ME platform and MIDP allow developers to create small and efficient applications for portable devices, often through the reuse of existing Java code which reduces costs while still providing applications for multiple devices.

Borland products are in use by over 2.5 million developers worldwide and the company is a recognized leader in application development and deployment technology. Initiatives in wireless application development have been an important focus for the company over the past 18 months beginning with the introduction of JBuilder HandheldExpress(TM) in June 2000.

SMARTMONEY.COM: 25 Stocks That Stand Out (So Far)

      By Matthew Goldstein
      June 13, 2001

(This report was originally published late Wednesday.)

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--In a market as tough as the one we`ve been in for more than
a year now, it`s easy to conclude that making money is next to impossible.
But amid all the earnings warnings, layoff announcements and bankruptcy fili
      ngs,
there have been some stellar stock-market performers. In fact, 60 good-sized U.S
      .
stocks are posting triple-digit percentage gains this year, according to an
analysis performed for SmartMoney.com by Standard & Poor`s Quantitative Services
      .
No penny stocks here. These are companies with market capitalizations greater
than $500 million. Their year-to-date performance is all the more remarkable
considering that the Nasdaq remains down 14% this year, the S&P 500 is off almos
      t
6%, and the Dow is virtually flat.
The market`s best performer this year is our old friend Priceline.com (PCLN), the
online travel booker that helped give a jolt to William Shatner`s flagging caree
      r
and came to epitomize much of the hype and mania surrounding the dot-com bubble.

The stock is up an astronomical 471% - to $7.89 a share. Of course, Priceline`s
meteoric recent gains are small comfort to anyone who bought the stock at its
all-time high of $162 back in April 1999. And even after this year`s rousing
performance, Priceline`s stock is still trading 84% below its $47.36 price on
      Dec. 31, 1999.
That unfortunate reality had us winnow out not just Priceline, but many of t
      his
year`s top-performing stocks. Despite their triple-digit gains, 19 highfliers ar
      e
trading below their Dec. 31, 1999, closing prices. Fully a dozen of them -
including Corrections Corp. of America (CXW), GoTo.com (GOTO) and Earthlink
(ELNK) - are off their year-end 1999 prices to the dismal tune of 50% or more.
But not all of this year`s rocket-propelled stocks have the same whiff of -
      how
shall we put it? - rebounding moribund feline. In fact, 25 of this year`s
top-performing stocks are trading above their closing prices in 1999. Even
better, all 25 of these companies have been profitable for at least the past fiv
      e
fiscal quarters. Now, list-making is always a perilous exercise in investing - or
in financial journalism. Remember the "Nifty 50"? But these 25 stocks certainly

stand out amid all the market wreckage.
Maybe the most interesting thing about this list is that no single industry
dominates. The 25 include a number of typical New Economy suspects: semiconducto
      r
manufacturers Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Nvidia (NVDA), e-commerce softwar
      e
      provider Borland Software (BORL)
      and video-game manufacturers Activison (ATVI)
and THQ (THQI). But the list also has its share of dowdy Old Economy stalwarts
like the office-supply company IKON Office Solutions (IKN), energy-engineering
and construction company Foster Wheeler (FWC) and retailers Abercrombie & Fitch
(ANF) and Best Buy (BBY). It`s truly an eclectic mix.
But before you rush out and start adding these stocks to your portfolio, the
      re
are a few things to consider. As they say in all those mutual-fund
advertisements, past performance is no guarantee of future results. No one knows
whether these highfliers have used up all their rocket fuel and are ready to
      tumble back to earth. And some of these stocks trade at truly orbital premiums;

they remain, as the saying goes, priced for perfection, and the market is likely
to be harshly unforgiving of any results that come in short of that perfection.

Pharmaceutical Resources (PRX), the top performer on our list, also sports one o
      f
the loftiest price-to-earnings ratios. The generic-drug manufacturer is enjoying
a boost from the news that it will soon begin selling a generic version of the
antidepressant drug Prozac. But after rising 249% this year - and 391% since the

end of 1999 - its shares now trade at an eye-popping P/E of 258, compared with
just 31 for the pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly (LLY).
And while our market-cap floor of $500 million eliminates microcap stocks fr
      om
this list, some of these companies are relatively small concerns with limited
operating histories. PEC Solutions (PECS), ranked No. 5 in year-to-date
performance, is a Fairfax, Va.-based technology-consulting firm that had its
initial public offering only last year. In addition, the company specializes in
      a
narrow niche: working with government agencies to develop Internet platforms.
Right now, it`s a profitable niche, but future competition could squeeze PEC`s
profit margins. The stock is up 186% to $22.65 this year, but a year from now it

      could be a different story.
Meanwhile, several companies on the list, including Pharmaceutical Resources
      and
electronics manufacturer BEI Technologies (BEIQ), have issued just a few million

shares to the public. That means the stocks are rather illiquid - a Wall Street
term that means they trade infrequently and there`s a limited pool of buyers and

sellers. The trouble with an illiquid stock is that it can be tough for an
investor to unload shares quickly in a fast-sinking market. And that, of course,
is a real concern with any highflying stock.
"I wouldn`t run out and buy a portfolio of stocks just because it doubled in
      the
past year," says James Angel, a professor of finance at Georgetown University`s

McDonough School of Business. "There`s always a naïve expectation that if a
stock went up yesterday, it will go up tomorrow. But the real lesson here is tha
      t
even in a bear market, there are good solid companies with earnings that are
      going to prosper."
True enough for this list so far this year. We`ll check back in on them in a few
months to see if past performance in this case proves to be any indication of
      future results.

      The Powerhouse 25

Stock Price YTD Since End 1999

Borland Delivers on Web Services Promises With Delphi(TM) 6
Latest Release of Borland(R) Flagship RAD Platform Now Available
SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif., June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Borland Software Corporation (Nasdaq: BORL - news), a leading provider in e-business implementation platforms, today announced the immediate availability of Borland® Delphi(TM) 6, the new version of its rapid application development (RAD) environment for the Windows® operating system. As the first RAD environment to help developers easily use and create emerging industry standard Web Services, Delphi 6 enables the rapid development and deployment of applications using XML- and SOAP-based Web Services technologies. Delphi 6 Web Services technologies speed e-business by enabling companies to automate the secure sharing and exchange of business information over the Internet.

      (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20010118/BORLOGO )
Delphi 6 is the only RAD environment that supports emerging industry standards: XML, SOAP, WSDL and XSL. Delphi 6 also supports emerging Web Services-based vendor platforms .Net(TM) and Biztalk(TM) from Microsoft, and ONE from Sun Microsystems®, while providing the scalability and reliability that enterprise and Web developers require.

``Borland Delphi 6 delivers to developers the best-of-breed RAD environment that makes it truly easy to use and create emerging industry standard Web Services,`` said Evan Quinn, chief analyst for Hurwitz Group, Inc. ``By adding Web Services into the context of the proven Delphi development metaphor and environments, Borland once again illustrates that it understands the unique needs of individual and corporate developers.``

Borland designed the new Delphi framework, including BizSnap(TM), WebSnap(TM) and DataSnap(TM), to enable faster time-to-market by simplifying business-to-business integration. Delphi 6 helps users build server-side and client-side applications that support Web Services specifications through a fully integrated set of Web Service enabled visual tools, advanced compiler technology and re-usable software components.

``With its high level of performance and scalability, Delphi is my development environment of choice for building rapid applications for Windows,`` said Mouse Silverstein, senior systems developer at a major entertainment/theme park. ``I depend on Delphi to build mission-critical applications quickly and easily.``

Borland Delphi 6 delivers performance rich graphical user interface (GUI) clients for customers` CORBA® or Enterprise JavaBean(TM) (EJB(TM)) server applications. Using Borland Delphi 6, development teams can build rich GUI clients for Borland® VisiBroker for CORBA and Borland® AppServer(TM) applications for EJB technology. Delphi 6 extends customers` EJB applications as Web Services enabling them to provide business-to-business integration to their customers, suppliers and partners.

``Web Services are the next step in application development on the Internet because they allow two companies that have different IT infrastructures to effectively conduct e-business together,`` said Simon Thornhill, vice president and general manager of Borland`s RAD business unit. ``We are already seeing an incredible demand for technologies that support Web services, which should fuel the growth of Delphi 6.``

Borland Delphi 6 new product features include:

BizSnap Web Services RAD development platform simplifies business-to-business integration by easily creating XML/SOAP Web Services and connections.
WebSnap is a component-based Web application development framework that supports leading Web Application Servers, including Apache(TM), Netscape® and Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS).
DataSnap enables customers to build high-performance, Web Service-enabled middleware that allows any client application or service to easily connect with any Enterprise-class RDBMS, such as Oracle®, MS-SQL Server, Informix®, IBM® DB2®, Sybase® and Borland® InterBase®, through emerging Web Services including XML, DCOM, or CORBA®.
In addition, when paired with Borland Kylix(TM), the first native RAD environment for the Linux® operating system (OS), Delphi 6 users can build single-source applications for both Windows and Linux, which opens new opportunities and increases the potential return on development investments.

      Borland-Aktie wieder sexy
