FreeNet problems might end AEG``s run
Jan 28/00-10:07:12 AM
One of the main attractions of AEG is the access the shareholders will have to the FreeISP float. However, the recent problems of FreeNet having to close itself to any new registerants (see http://www.it.fairfax.com.au/ show the that the concept of free internet access may not be the land of milk and honey that Australian and German investors think it is. The advertisers that are needed to make the whole thing work appear not to be there just yet (or ever).
AEG has shown spectacular growth but what is driving it? Is it simply the lack of IT stocks in Germany that make them go for anything vaguely IT? And so a merry little loop starts up like a dog chasing its tail. The germans buy it so we must buy it too. Then the germans see we``ve bought it and so they buy it again etc......
So the bottom line is that the logic behind some models of free internet access is flawed. The question is how can FreeISP and any other free internet providers (FIP for short!) over come those flaws and make it work (or actually pay).
