VSNL third-quarter net up 11% to Rs 298 crore
      Baburajan K

      Mumbai, Jan 31:

Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) has posted an 11 per cent rise in net profit to Rs 298.40 crore during the third quarter of the current fiscal against Rs 268.42 crore in the corresponding period previous fiscal.
Net income during the period decreased by 2.02 per cent to Rs 1,662.8 crore from Rs 1,697.1 crore. Gross sales for the quarter are on the basis of the proposed revised total accounting rates (TAR) which are close to 10 to 14 per cent lower than the TAR applicable for the corresponding period in the previous year.
Total expenditure during the period was Rs 1,224.2 crore (Rs 1,311.9 crore) and gross profit was Rs 457.7 crore (Rs 417.8 crore). VSNL`s net income for the first nine months was 5,018.2 crore (Rs 4,898 crore) and net profit Rs 1,000 crore (Rs 1,004.4 crore). Meanwhile, ICO Global Communications Holdings Ltd filed a voluntary petition for reorganisation under chapter II of the United States Bankruptcy Code on August 27, 1999. VSNL has already invested in the ordinary shares of ICO Global Communications to the tune of $150 million (about Rs 517.9 crore). The Chapter II filing enables ICO Global to continue normal business operations while it develops a plan of re-organisation under the protection of this chapter.
US Court of Bankruptcy is presently seized of restructuring plan of ICO. The plan would involve substantial reduction in the equity stake of the existing investors in the restructured ICO. Since the restructuring plan is still pending with the court, VSNL has not considered any provision for diminution in the value of investment in ICO Global which is indeterminate at this juncture.
VSNL chairman and managing director SK Gupta said despite the reduction in accounting rates with the foreign carriers and a competitive business scenario in certain segments of VSNL, the company has been able to sustain its profitability level.
Registering a growth of 75 per cent, VSNL has a customer base of 3.22 lakh Internet subscribers by December-end compared to 1.82 lakh during the same period previous year. The company had announced a substantial reduction in Internet tariff effective January 15, 2000.
``Within a span of few years, VSNL will be in every house, school, office, medical facility and in every business field to facilitate rapid growth in education, medical services, business and industry,`` Gupta added.

      Our New Delhi Bureau
      27 JANUARY

VIDESH Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) and Haryana Electronics Development Corporation Ltd (HARTRON) today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to set up a high speed data communication facility with associated marketing services for data links, internet access and other value added services of VSNL.

The project is expected to provide critical international communications infrastructure to a large number of software exporters. In a press statement released here, VSNL said that a wide range of specialised and value-added services of VSNL, such as point-to-point leased lines, internet and other data services would be made available through this hub.

VSNL seeks approval for mega expansion of internet services
      P Sreevalsan Menon

      Mumbai, Jan 12:

Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) has sought government permission to expand Internet service across the country. The carrier has also forwarded a proposal to the ministry to allow it to uplink various international satellites. Both the plans, if approved, are expected to contribute significantly to the bottomline of the company.
VSNL has informed the government that since it has gateway switches and earth stations at a number of locations across India, it would be in a better position to provide the access to users. At present, the carrier offers Internet access to four metros and two class B cities. The company had earlier intentions to provide the services on a nation-wide basis.
According to VSNL chairman and managing director SK Gupta, the company is seeking government nod to offer services from around 24 earth station locations and nine gateway switch locations including places like Ahmedabad and Dehradun. "Our proposal is with the ministry. We have good infrastructure with enoughbandwidth in place," he said. At present, Department of Telecommunication (DoT) provides Internet access in most of the class B and C cities.
VSNL has earth stations at Bangalore, Goa, Indore, Hyderabad and Chandigarh. New teleports are being installed at Bhubaneswar. Around 30 new ISPs have taken connection from these ports. The current Internet user base is around 3.25 lakh with a revenue of around Rs 200 crore.
The company has sought permission for uplinking to international satellites other than Intelsat, through which it uplinks major TV channels. There are satellites such as Americom and Thaicom with good footprint over the sub-continent and VSNL says that it considers that multiple options would give it an effective cost.
The company is planning to add additional bandwidth to increase the Internet business. "We may buy further 100 mb to beef up the service," Gupta said. It has now around 106 mb installed bandwidth base with around 61 mb under commissioning process.
VSNL has a near monopoly inthe TV uplinking market and provides facility through Intelsat and New Skies satellite consortia. Uplinking is being provided to SunTV, Surya TV, Udaya TV, Enadu TV, BiTV, Asianet and Gemini through earth stations at Chennai and Delhi. A number of other channels including Digital TV are also planned for uplinking.
VSNL chairman denied any move to invest further in the satellite phone venture -- ICO Global. VSNL has the marketing and distribution rights of ICO services in India.
ICO is going through a crisis and has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in the US. Calling the situation fluid, the chairman said that the VSNL board was awaiting the new business plans of ICO in April to take a decision on the stake in the company. He felt that it was too early to comment on any plans to sell the ICO stake.

VSNL to convert GDRs into ADRs
Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd </comp/vsnl/mr01.html>(VSNL) will list its shares in the United States by March, a senior company official said today.
This will be done by converting its Global Depositary Receipts (GDRs) into American Depository Receipts (ADRs), Amitabh Kumar, VSNL`s Director (Operations), told Reuters on the sidelines of a business seminar. "It should be over by March," Kumar said, when asked about the date of the conversion.
He did not say which U.S. stock exchange his company`s ADRs would be listed on. A company official told Reuters in October that the company was considering a listing on either the New York Stock Exchange or the Nasdaq.
The GDRs will not be delisted and extinguished, Kumar added. He did not say how many GDRs would be converted into ADRs. Asked the reasons for the conversion, he said: "It is for liquidity and for U.S. investors to enter and exit at a lower cost." Kumar said VSNL would announce next month a decision on hiving off its Internet business as a separate company. "We should come out with an announcement next month," he said.
But he refused to say whether a listing of the proposed Internet company was planned. This would be decided at a later stage, he said.

VSNL to hike stake in ICO
After being stuck with unrealizable equity investments of US$ 150mn and loosing its status as the largest shareholder in ICO Global Communications, VSNL is keen on investing more money to salvage some lost ground. The amount and time of fresh investments are yet to be decided.
However this may have come a bit too late. Even if VSNL manages to better its 7% holding in ICO, it will have to play second fiddle to the combined might of Craig McCaw, chairman Teledesic and Subhash Chandra, chairman Zee Telefilms who together own 74% of ICO. Earlier, in mid-99, ICO had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware, US.
In the three-step bailout package ordered by the bankruptcy court, the McCaw-Chandra combine has put up the first two tranches, amounting to US$500mn in return for 74% stake in ICO. The remaining 26% will be allocated primarily to creditors and bondholders, with the current shareholders appearing at the bottom of the priority list. For the balance US$700mn, the McCaw-Chandra combine has agreed to commit the amount for exit-financing to the extent that this is not provided by other investors, which is the hub of the entire issue.

      VSNL to launch cable Internet

Trial runs are currently on to launch Internet services through the cable television network, by Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL). The service is expected to be launched shortly.
According to VSNL officials, the service will be restricted to Mumbai initially. VSNL - the long-distance telecom carrier, and also the largest Internet service provider in the country, is now closely working with the leading cable operators in the city including InCablenet, Siti Cable and Hathway Cable to make the project successful.
The move is expected to deliver a shot in the arm to VSNL and take it far ahead of its competitors. The company currently caters to around three lakh customers.
The biggest advantage of the cable Internet will be the speed factor. The new service will allow the subscribers to stay connected to the Net permanently, whereas in the existing services, the users have to dial up to get connected. The cable Internet service can offer a connection with a four mbps speed as against the existing 56 kbps, which is relatively slow.
"The tariffs are yet to be finalised. It could be somewhere around Rs 1,000 per month," said an official from VSNL. The company is expected to work out a revenue-sharing formula with various cable companies soon.
The industry source pointed out that VSNL would need to make the rates more competitive. MTNL had recently announced a new scheme where unlimited Net usage would cost the user only Rs 6,000 annually.
Meanwhile, VSNL has slashed its Internet tariffs by 15 per cent, following MTNL reducing its rates. What`s more, VSNL is also offering a 50 per cent off-peak hour rebate between 11 pm and 8 am on week days and Saturdays, and full day on Sunday.
During peak hours, the tariff for the case of renewals now ranges from Rs 425 for 30 hours to Rs 5,780 for 500 hours.

VSNL to hive off Internet business

The country`s telecom giant Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (VSNL) said today that it is planning to hive off its Internet business as a separate company. Amitabh Kumar, director (Operations) told Reuters that VSNL is making Internet business as a separate entity - a subsidiary.

VSNL Net Arm May Float ADR, Sees 1M Subscribers
      By Uday Lal Pai <mailto:uday@reporters.net>
      India Correspondent, asia.internet.com
      [October 28, 1999--MUMBAI]

Taking a cue from Satyam Infoway`s <http://www.satyamonline.com> recent successful foray on the NASDAQ, India`s Telecom-Internet major Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited <http://www.vsnl.net.in> (VSNL) may go in for an ADR float for its proposed Net arm - VSNL Seamless Services Limted (VSSL).
It has also set a target of one million subscribers for the Internet services by April 2001.
VSNL officials maintained that the ADS move was being considered but a final decision would be taken after the subsidiary was valued and became operational in about three months. However, sources said some investment bankers have advised VSNL to dilute up to 25 per cent of its stake in the subsidiary, which could raise US$ 1 billion.
It is learnt that the telecom giant is in the process of appointing one of the Big 5 consultancy firms to conduct a valuation exercise. VSNL seems to be in a hurry to list VSSL either on NASDAQ or the New York Stock Exchange.
Given the response received for Satyam`a ADS float, VSSL could easily raise a larger amount. VSSL would be at least five times bigger in terms of Internet account base. The company is excited about what it terms as "tremendous appetite for Indian Internet stocks" which has been proved by the success of Satyam Infoway. "VSNL is a giant and hence sky is the limit for its Internet subsidiary" says VSNL officials.
As of June 30,1999, compared to Satyam`s 80,000 subscribers, VSNL has 300,000 plus subscribers. VSNL has other competitive advantage including lower rates, longer service history, greater financial resources and easy access to network infrastructure controlled by the government. It also has monopoly over all the international telecom traffic from and to India.
VSNL has set a target of one billion account base by 2001. The company is expected to have an account base of 4000,000 by the end of current fiscal year. The 600,000 addition in the following year is being attributed to the fact that the Net arm, VSSL, will hold a national license and will have more areas to cover.
VSNL is currently operating only six nodes at the major metros in India. Lion share of its subscriber base comes from these six cities and other parts of the country where it merely provides node access to the department of telecom(DoT).
Once VSSL is set up, it will provide services across the country and this will lead to a sharp increase in the number of subscribers. The Internet business is expected to drive the growth of VSNL in the next five years when the company is expecting a turnover of $1250 million from the Net business alone.
According to inside sources, the process for the international offering has been started. "A separate Net arm will reflect the strength of this business in the stock value, currently locked by virtue of being a small part of VSNL`s revenue. The true worth of the business would only be realized once it is listed as a separate entity." said VSNL source.
The ISP policy limits foreign equity investments up to a maximum of 49 per cent and VSNL is not averse to it. Currently, VSSL has an equity base of $25 million, which too might recast.

Satyam to Invest in Gateways, Acquisitions October 25, 1999

By Uday Lal Pai India Correspondent ISP News Archives <http://www.internetnews.com/isp-news/archives/0,1068,8,00.html>
[Mumbai, INDIA] Post-IPO Satyam Infoway Ltd. <http://www.satyamonline.com> has declared gateways will be the prime focus for the millions it accumulated last week.
The company intends to expand the domestic reach of the Internet in India and also plans to set up an International gateway. Another thrust area will be to invest in acquisitions.
According to R. Ramaraj, Satyam`s managing director, about 40 per cent of the $75 million ADS will go in beefing up the infrastructure, 20 per cent to strengthen the portal development and 10 per cent on brand building.
The balance amount (30 per cent) will be earmarked for acquisitions in areas like Internet and e-commerce.
"The growth in Internet and e-commerce come through acquisitions, too," Ramaraj said.
For international gateway, the company is awaiting some security clearances. This would ensure better quality of service to its customers.
Satyam (SIFY) <http://sites.stockpoint.com/internet/quote.asp?Symbol=sify&g… has targeted regional ISPs for acquisitions and has started searching for partners. The company has already held preliminary discussions for such deals. Satyam is expected to aggressively pursue its acquisition strategy now that the IPO is complete.
Besides, Satyam is also considering opportunities to acquire sources of content for its Internet portal. According to sources, for portal business, Satyam might prefer to have partners in content development than going for acquisitions.
Satyam has set a target to expand its network from 27 locations to 40 by April 2000. The company expects a "significant number" of new competitor will enter India`s ISP market in the near future. The major competitor would be state-controlled Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited, which currently is far ahead of Satyam in the rankings.
The other origins of competition, as recognized by the company, are from the well-established Indian content providers, including IndiaWorld and Rediff-on-the-Net.
However, Satyam is the second largest ISP in terms of subscription base (80,000 subscribers) in India. Satyam was the first ISP to have an IP network in the private sector and was also the first private ISP.
Earlier last week, when Satyam hit Nasdaq with a bang, the company chairman Ramalinga Raj called the listing as momentous for the Indian Company. Satyam listed its shares on Nasdaq after raising $75 million where the bids were for more than $2 billion from institutional and retail investors.
"We are excited with the capitalization we have got. We are proud to be listed on the Nasdaq," said a beaming Ramaraj, managing director.
"Investors in the US recognize and understand Indian companies that are driven by tremendous management strength," stated John Wall, NASDAQ president.
Post issue, the company will have a capital base of $5.5 million, and the share holders include Satyam Computer Services with a 59 per cent stake, UK-based CDC with 17 per cent, US-based Internet technology company Sterling Commerce 2 per cent 4.5 per cent reserved for employee`s stock option plan (ESOP) and the balance will lie with the public.
Now the Satyam group is considering an IPO for Satyam Computers, the parent company of Satyam Infoway.

VSNL may get listed on Nasdaq or NYSE
Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL), is thinking of getting itself listed either on Nasdaq or New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). A VSNL </comp/d483/mr01.html> spokesman said the company has the option of going in for a conversion of its existing global depository receipts (GDRs) into American Depository Receipts (ADRs) or coming out with a fresh issue of ADRs. VSNL has chalked out a Rs 7000-crore investment plan. While part of the funds would be raised through internal accruals, some other funds would be raised through debt. The funding options were being worked out, the spokesman said.
Recently the government had offered 1mn shares of VSNL to the public for an aggregate amount of Rs750mn. The issue was oversubscribed nearly seven times.

VSNL To List In US By December September 7, 1999
By Uday Lal Pai India Correspondent International News Archives <http://www.internetnews.com/intl-news/archives/0,1068,6,00.html>

[Mumbai, INDIA] Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited <http://www.vsnl.net.in> (VSNL), state-owned telecom carrier and the largest ISP in India, will be listed on the U.S. bourses by December, says Amitabh Kumar, chairman and managing director of the company.
"We have decided to list in the US stock exchanges by December, either on NASDAQ or New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) or even both," he revealed.
VSNL will be giving an option to its existing global depository receipt (GDR) holders to convert their receipts to American depository receipts (ADRs). In fact, the company is preparing for a Level-3 listing, which would allow existing GDRs to be traded in the US markets without conversions.
The company is also currently in the process of modifying its accounting procedures to meet the United States generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP) standards shortly.
Amitabh Kumar said that the financial projections for fiscal 1999-2000 were very strong. "Net profit is likely to jump by 40 per cent over the previous years figure of US$ 331 million, when the growth was about 38.5 per cent." he added that companies bottomline would improve considerably over the previous year`s performance.
The domestic retail issue of one million shares would open for five days between September 20 and 24, Kumar said. The issue would be priced at $17.85 (Rs 750) per share, garnering $178.5 million for the Government, which is divesting its shares.
The issue price is at a huge discount to VSNL`s current market price of around $27.5 per share on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
After the divestment, government stake in the company would come down to 52.8 per cent from 53.8 per cent. According to Kumar, the company received the nod from Securities Exchanges Board of India (SEBI) last week and there were no further clearances required for the offering.
For the year 1998-99, VSNL registered a strong operational and financial performance. It had a rapid growth in traffic and increased the number of value-added services in its portfolio.
However, the growth in the revenues is slightly lower than the growth in traffic because of declining account rates. The silver lining was a negligible increase in network cost despite the steep rise in total traffic.
In the last financial year, VSNL acquired a stake in New Skies Satellites NV and augmented its investment in ICO Global Communications to $150 million.

      welche ein schöner Tag !

      Indien + 8 % (Max Steigerung)
      Deutschland + 16 % Handelsvolumen 1,46 Mio. !!!

Schaun wir mal, was weiter passiert. (Sollte der Beitrag so überzeugt haben ? ;))

      www.fnet.de

VSNL unveils ATM network to boost Net traffic
      P Sreevalsan Menon

      MUMBAI, FEBRUARY 4:

VSNL hat die Zeichen der Zeit erkannt. Schnelle, breitbandige Netze.

Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) is setting up a high-speed large asynchronous tranfer mode (ATM) backbone network to boost Internet traffic. The telecom major is also investing around Rs 35-40 crore to set up Internet exchanges to assist other Internet services providers (ISPs) in their distribution.
The ATM network and exchanges are expected to boost Internet traffic in India. These Internet exchanges will act as one-point contact for ISPs who can then distribute the stream to their users. According to Amitabh Kumar, director (operations) at VSNL, the company is setting up many such nodes for the Internet. It is also in talks with a few cable companies here to provide connectivity through TV cables.

Kumar said that VSNL is looking at options like multi-media services and cable services to sell its bandwidth. VSNL is deploying the Net exchanges currently across a number of places in India and the project will be completed by a few months. At present, it has alloted around 80 MB of bandwidth to the ISPs.

      Habe einige Fragen an euch.

      Hallo VSNL-Freunde,

heute von 2500 auf 2700 wieder +8% in Indien :):):):).

Damit habe ich nicht gerechnet. Charttechnisch wäre eine Korrektur fällig gewesen. Soll uns recht sein. Die Aktie will anscheinend nach oben.

      Kursumrechnung

      1 US$=1,99DEM=1,02E=65.25 RS

      1E = 63,9 Rs

      Beispiel 7.2.00 VSNL

      Close 2438 Rs = 38,15 E

India to Have 4 Private International Gateways Soon
      By Uday Lal Pai
      India Correspondent, asia.internet.com
      [January 5, 2000--MUMBAI]

The government of India seems to understand that the growth of Internet services and e-commerce is restricted by the monopoly of international gateways by Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (VSNL).

Four applications for private international gateways were cleared in the first round.

Sources at the Telecom Commission revealed that Satyam Infoway Ltd., Zee Group, Bharti BT Internet and Jain TV are among the first ISPs in India to set up international gateways.

The vetting of applications has been speeded up after a top-level directive last month that the fate of applications should be decided in a month`s time.

ISPs have been allowed to bypass VSNL gateways for overseas data services, which do not carry voice telephony. Market analysts expressed hope that the first private gateway for ISPs will be operational by April.

Satyam Infoway (Nasdaq: SIFY) is the largest private ISP in the country followed by Bharti BT Internet, a 51:49 joint venture ISP by Bharti Enterprises and British Telecom PLC.

Bharti BT Internet is currently evaluating a Nasdaq listing.

The Zee Group is slated to invest nearly $100 million to develop its new ISP and portal business: ZeeNext.com. Details of Jain TV`s plans are not known.

Private ISPs currently rely on Department of Telecom (DoT) services and MTNL (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd.) for customer dial-up lines, and on VSNL for access to the international backbone. The new gateways will facilitate faster growth in e-commerce in India.

According to sources, more names are likely to be approved later this week. The DoT services` licensing and regulation group -- the nodal agency for providing single window clearance to the proposals for obtaining bandwidths from foreign satellites -- has so far received about 25 applications.

Free Net access in a month?

The falling internet access rates may soon reach zero. If one goes by what VSNL director Amitabh Kumar said at Nasscom 2000@India today, internet access will be provided free of charge within a month’s time. VSNL has no plans to directly give Net access free of charge. However, other ISPs will be able to afford as VSNL would lease the lines to private ISPs at a rate of Rs 14 per hour. This would go a long way in the Net finally being accessed free of charge.

A couple of days ago, a Mumbai-based eveninger Mid-Day offered free access for 100 hours. The newspaper tied up with MTNL to provide free access to the first 10,000 who registered

      Indien: Neue High Tech Werte

      Medien Konglomerat Zee Telefilms
      Silverline Industries
      NIIT

      Hallo VSNL-Freunde,

in Indien ist der Kurs wieder gestiegen:

      :) 3150 Rs :)

      VSNL ($) = VSNL (Rs) * 0,0155 (VSNL-Faktor)

      $ = 1,02 E

      VSNL (E) = VSNL (Rs) * 0,01581 (VSNL-Faktor)

      49,8 E = 3150 Rs * 0,01581
      ======

      Was tun ?

      Net Asset Value
The Net Asset Value of an Investment Trust company
NAV) is the total value of all its assets, taking the
portfolio of securities at current market value and
deducting the value of its preference shares and all its
iabilities such as loan stocks. The NAV is usually
expressed as an amount per share. It is used to show
the performance of the underlying portfolio of
      investments.

      Discount and Premium
Stockmarket fluctuations will generally mean that an
Investment Trust company`s share price is not the same
as its Net Asset Value per share.

When the share price is lower than the NAV, the share
is said to be trading at a `discount`. The opposite
situation is described as trading at a `premium`.

      - Anpassung an Landeswährungen

Niemand an Board, keine Banker, keine Investment-Berater etc ?

      Tschüss

      Hallo VSNL-Freunde,

nun habe ich es auch verstanden. Meine Fehler waren

      a) Auf der Seite http://www.indiainfoline.com/stok/gdrp/index.html

      Beispiel: 9.2.00 = 39,9 $ => 22,47% Aufschlag zum fairen Wert von 31 $

      b) Aufgelder von 20%-50% bislang nicht gekannt und somit nicht ernsthaft angenommen zu haben

      ======================================

      **********************************************
      *
      * VSNL
      *
      * x E = y Rs * 0,5 / 43,15 (Rs/E)
      *
      **********************************************

      10.2 VSNL 35,58 E = 3071 Rs * 0,5 / 43,15 (Rs/E)

      Deutschland / F 40, E + 12%

      ======================================

      **********************************************
      *
      * MTNL
      *
      * x E = y Rs * 2 / 43,15 (Rs/E)
      *
      **********************************************

      10.2 MTNL 16,2 E = 350 Rs * 2 / 43,15 (Rs/E)

      Deutschland / F 24,5 E !!! + 51 % :O

VSNL to convert GDRs into ADRs

Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) will list its shares in the United States by March, a senior company official said today.

Corporate Results Tuesday, 1 February, 2000

      http://www.capitalmarket.com/capitalmarket/q3analysis/VSNL.H…

NP grows though revenues fall For Q3 ended Dec.`99, Videsh Sanchar Nigam (VSNL) has reported a marginal decline in the top line to Rs 1662.8 cr from Rs 1691.7 cr of the corresponding period of the previous year. Despite this, net profit has increased by 11% to Rs 298.4 cr. The gross sales for the quarter have been on the basis of the proposed revised total accounting rates (TAR) which are almost 10-14% lower than those for the same period last year. The lower top line can be attributed to this to some extent. However, there is a reason for concern since the TARs are bound to decrease further in the coming years and the company which derives over 90% of its income from international telephony will need to have substantially higher volumes to make up for reduced rates. The company has improved its operating margin to 27.5% from 22.7% and has registered a higher profit despite a lower top line and other income. Other income fell 41% to Rs 19.1 cr. This augurs well for the company as it will need to be highly cost efficient as the sector is de-regulated and competition gains a foothold. VSNL has maintained its status of being a zero-debt company and has had no interest outflow in this quarter which is in continuation of the last year`s nil interest costs. VSNL intends converting its GDRs into ADRs and subsequently get listed on the NYSE in the near future. Its Internet service business will be hived off into a subsidiary to be named VSNL Seamless Services Ltd. (VSSL) which would be set up by April. VSNL is looking at portals as a major business opportunity and is in talks with a number of domestic content providers for joint ventures and strategic alliances. The Internet business, which accounts for just about 5% of VSNL`s total turnover, is its fastest growing business. The company is planning to set up an Internet consultancy division which will provide technical cosultancy to start-up ISPs. VSNL is also planning to add additional bandwidth to expand the Internet business. Currently it has a 106-MB installed bandwidth base with about 61 MB under commissioning. The company may buy a further 100 MB to augment its capacity.

The Sensex as expected opened with a huge gap of almost 200 points at 6130. In the next few minutes the Sensex started sliding down and kept on sliding till the end. The Sensex finally closed at 5924.5 points, down by 9 points. A correction which was very much expected after last week`s unprecedented gain of more than 600 points. I think the correction will still continue for some more time and gradually the markets will enter the phase of consolidation..

      MTNL & VSNL consolidate...

After a terrific performance last week, MTNL and VSNL seems to be once getting in to the consolidation phase. Last week in all the five trading sessions MTNL hit the upper circuits recording gains of 46.9%. VSNL also recorded excellent gains of 28.4% during the week. Today VSNL and MTNL both have hit the lower circuits, probably a beginning of healthy correction phase.

BSE market capitalisation at $256 billion; India among top ten markets
      (Tuesday, February 15, 2000)

      B G Shirsat in Mumbai

The market capitalisation of all stocks listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) soared to record high of Rs 11 trillion (about $256 billion) Monday putting India among the top ten markets in the world by market capitalisation.

With a market cap of $ 256 billion India has been now placed at ninth position after South Africa which is at number eight in pecking order with an estimated market cap of $ 275 billion.

The BSE Sensex touched an all time high of 6,150.69 during intraday trading before closing at 5924.31, a loss of 9.25 points over the previous close. The S&P CNX Nifty closed 11.50 points lower at 1744.50.

The BS Index of the convergent economy, ICE index, outperformed BSE Sensex reporting a rise of 4.59 per cent or 16.27 points to close at 370.49.

Wipro and Infosys Technologies that hit upper circuit filter propelled the rise in the ICE Index. Wipro market capitalisation has crossed Rs 1.5 trillion followed by Infosys Technologies with a market capitalisation of Rs 71,252 crore.

Excluding, Wipro, and Infosys Technologies and Satyam Computer Services that gained 7.5 per cent all other information technology stocks in ICE Index saw a major correction.

Eight ISP gateways can use foreign satellites
      8 FEBRUARY

THE Department of Telecommunica-tions (DoT) has granted an in-principle clearance to eight internet service providers (ISPs) for 25 international internet gateways using foreign satellites.
Speaking at a seminar in Mumbai today, DoT deputy director general N Parmeswaran revealed the companies that had been granted permission included Dishnet of Chennai, Jain Studios, Intech Net of Hyderabad, STPI operating in 12 centres, Data Access (India), Internet Promoters India, Sigma Input Output Tech India in seven circles and Direct Internet of Delhi. The government, Mr Parmeswaran said, is committed to a liberal internet regime, reflected in the earlier licensing of 225 internet service providers (ISPs). Of these, 60 have already started commercial services.
Speaking at a Ficci seminar on ‘Role of Cable TV and Interactive TV in Internet Services’, N Parmeswaran said a few more internet gateway applications were likely to be cleared shortly. No licence fees were applicable and foreign satellites were permitted as hosts, he added. The only conditions for private gateway operators, he said, were that their satellite hosts should have a coordinate over India and the frequency should be cleared by DoT to prevent any overlap. The operators should also adhere to the International Telecom Union (ITU) rules, he said.
The senior DoT official scotched speculation that the government’s internet policy did not permit ISPs to set up last-mile connectivity, and clarified that permission would be granted to private cable operators for delivering internet over their cable systems.
Commenting on the reach of internet in the country, Mr Parmeswaran said due to the limited reach of telephone networks and PCs, Internet in India was still largely confined to metros. With the reach of cable network however internet could be reached to the remotest village.
“We have set up a liberal regime. The only control that DoT is enforcing is the 49 per cent cap on foreign equity that is applicable to the telecom sector,” Mr Parmeswaran told ET.
Amitabh Kumar, VSNL director-operations, who also chaired the seminar session, said internet over cable would make it possible to deliver real-time streaming audio and video as well as gaming programmes. This was not possible currently because of the limited bandwidth of the overworked phone lines.
With the set-top boxes connected to TV replacing the PC, the reach of internet would expand rapidly, the VSNL official predicted.
Concurring with this view, KS Raman, past president of Cetma, said the TV set had a penetration of 55 million compared with less than three million PCs in the country. TV manufacturers were in tune with the task of providing internet-configured sets with wireless keyboards and set-top boxes. He promised that prices could be as low as Rs 9,000 in the near future.
Earlier, inaugurating the seminar, VN Dhoot, chairman of Ficci’s consumer goods committee, said interactive TV had an important role in the Indian context as the PC density and PC literacy in the country was low. Simple, user-friendly interactive TVs would have a larger reach for both commercial and non-commercial purposes, he said.
Echoing the same sentiment, SK Gupta, chairman of VSNL, said there could be no internet explosion as long as the market was restricted to the PC. The TV was high on the family purchase list and could provide the base for an internet connectivity of as high as 25 crore connections.
K Jayaraman, CEO of Hathway Datacom, and Ashok Mansukhani, COO of IndusInd Media & Communications, also presented the cable networks’ point of view at the seminar.

      VSNL monopoly in gateway ends
      NEW DELHI 7 FEBRUARY

THE department of telecommunications (DoT) is close to breaking Videsh Sanchar Nigam`s monopoly in international gateways. The department today issued the first in-principle clearance to Chennai-based national internet service provider (ISP), Dishnet, to set up a private international gateway. DoT will give in-principle clearances to seven more ISPs tomorrow, sources said. Dishnet was required to submit its acceptance of the terms and conditions of the licensing conditions within seven days of the issuance of the in-principle clearance.
The company submitted its acceptance of licensing conditions to DoT today evening, said sources.
About 25 ISPs including Mahanagar Telephone Nigam, Satyam Infoway, Global Electronics Commerce Services, Bharti BT and Jain Studio have applied for a licence to set up international gateways. The terms and conditions for the set-up, maintenance and operation of international gateways envisage that such gateways should be situated within the service area of the ISP concerned, and they shall be used only for carrying internet traffic.
DoT has nominated the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) for installing monitoring equipment at the gateway. This equipment will enable security agencies such as RAW and IB to monitor the use of gateway. The cost and monitoring of the equipment including its commissioning have to be borne by the licensee.
The telecom authority will have full rights to monitor all the traffic that goes through the gateway. It will be the duty of the ISP to ensure that the bandwidth provider (satellite company) gives complete monitoring rights to the telecom authority.
The government in December permitted ISPs to use foreign satellites for international connectivity. The ISPs can use both c band and ku band for carrying internet traffic, but are barred from setting up a gateway using submarine cables. They will have to go through VSNL for international connectivity through submarine cables.

+++ Katz- und Maus-Spiel zwischen VSNL und DoT +++

DoT-VSNL shadow boxing: Net surfers suffer
      13.2.2000

PATNA: Dial internet and you get a busy tone. Redial and re-redial, but your luck never seems to change. One is left fretting, fuming and cursing the monolithic telecom department for playing spoilsport.
This, apart from frequent tripping, is a perennial problem which internet subscribers often complain. The reason: Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) back-stabbing the department of telecommunications (DoT). Interestingly, DoT and VSNL seem to be busy playing a cat and mouse game here. As per the agreement reached between the two nodal agencies, DoT has a back-to-back arrangement with VSNL and while DoT was supposed to take care of internet connections in Bihar, VSNL was asked to limit its area of operation in Calcutta.
VSNL, however, went a step ahead. Having underpriced itself in comparison to DoT, VSNL started encroaching upon DoT territory, albeit in a clandestine manner. According to highly placed telecom sources, VSNL engaged `middlemen`, who, in turn, doled out internet connections at cheap rates through VSNL (cal2.vsnl & cal3.vsnl servers) Calcutta. However, this was done after taking an undertaking that these subscribers would access the VSNL Calcutta dial-up numbers, despite being fully aware that none in their right senses would surf the net on STD rate. Branded as "roaming subscribers" by VSNL, these locally based unaccounted subscribers began accessing DoT dial-up numbers here, thus creating heavy traffic congestion.
Said Darpan, proprietor of Inter.Net, a cyber shop, located at Dak Bungalow Road: "I myself purchased a VSNL account of 500 hours at a premium through one of these middlemen and used to access it through the DoT dial-up numbers here, not Calcutta. I utilised it for 430 hours but now the access has been denied by DoT." Darpan knows he was cheating and has no qualms about it. "I know of people who went to Calcutta, purchased VSNL dial-up accounts in bulk, came back and sold it here at a premium", he added.
To start with, DoT had 16 internet subscribers in March 1997. By February 1999, the line capacity was increased to 48. In November `99, when DoT had a registered subscriber base of 500 in Patna, with 48 lines dedicated to internet, the unregistered users, having VSNL accounts through Calcutta, accounted to around 400. This became known after DoT blocked access to such unregistered users. Subsequently, after the telecommunication minister`s intervention, the VSNL agreed to surrender all such accounts to DoT and in turn, the DoT lifted the embargo, informed the DE (TAX), Sujeet Kumar.
After having laid low for a couple of months, telecom officials alleged that VSNL was again reverting to its old pranks. The GM telecom has, in fact, written a letter to this effect to his counterpart in VSNL Calcutta, asking him to stop issuing such connections in Patna forthwith.
As per prescribed DoT norms, one telephone line caters to 10 dial-up connections. With a registered subscriber base of 1000-odd in Patna alone, the department presently has 88 telephone lines devoted to internet, which "very soon" will be enhanced to 128. This apart, there are still those unaccounted VSNL subscribers, which the telecom authorities apprehend, are huge in numbers, resulting in heavy congestion.
An indicator to DoT`s seriousness about internet is their own website (dotindia.com). Though the department revised its TCP/IP service rates in November last year, the same is yet to be updated on their web page. It still contains stale information about rates as applicable on April 1, 1999.
For the man who`s eyed with envy, having an official chamber which can house a mini corporate office with four telephones chiming almost simultaneously, accessing internet is hardly a problem. "Occasionally, the traffic may be heavy and it`s then that one has to retry, but tripping has never been a problem", said the general manager telecom, Chinmoy Mitra, while talking to The Times of India. "If at all there is any problem, it is in Anisabad, Patel Nagar and Patna City where we are encountering synchronisation difficulty", he said. "I myself used the internet for five hours at a stretch without any interruptions", he added.
For the man holding the whip, problems are hardly any. But in reality, tripping, sadly, remains a major concern for internet subscribers. Disturbance (humming), in most telephone lines, is malignant. This is one of the major reasons for frequent tripping, confess telecom officials themselves. Rectifying such complaints also comes under the gamut of telecom, but lower down the rung where the department has foggy, grey haired personnel, it`s hardly a priority.
It`s then anybody`s guess why the telecom department has more foes than friends.

+++ Der Anfang der Internet-Industrie in Indien besteht aktuell aus 175 genehmigten Internet Service Providern (ISPs).+++

Nascent net service sector wants infrastructure status
      MUMBAI 17 FEBRUARY

It is an industry which is just 13 months old, but is already clamouring to be recognised as a key infrastructure industry. The internet industry in India, currently made up of 175 licensed internet service providers (ISPs), may still be in its diapers, but wants to be taken much more seriously.
Consider this: Between August ’95 and December ’98, VSNL, the only ISP, had signed up 2.5 lakh subscribers. This number is now expected to touch 6.5 lakh by the end of the current financial year and nearly 50 ISPs are offering connectivity to Cyberia. Cause for cheer? Some, but a lot more needs to be done.
The growth may seem explosive, but for a country with an installed PC base of nearly 4m, the figures are pretty low. Also, for internet to be a truly national phenomenon, there is a need for some policy rationalisation.
For instance, out of the 175 licensed ISPs, nearly 60 per cent are “Category C” ISPs who offer connectivity in a single location, while another 25 per cent are regional ISPs and only 15 per cent hope to have a national presence.
The smaller ISPs are somewhat hampered in their growth ambitions because of a duty structure which appears to be somewhat lopsided. For instance, VSAT, radio trunking and basic and cellular telecom operators pay a basic customs duty rate of 5 per cent and an effective duty rate of 21.8 per cent on hardware imports.
On the other hand, ISPs have to pay a basic rate of 35 per cent and an effective customs duty rate of nearly 61 per cent to import equipment like routers, ATM switches, frame relay switches, high speed modems and cable modems.
Says Amitabh Kumar, director (operations) VSNL, “The country can do well if the budget gives an exemption in customs duty on hardware use in the field of IT communications and media. This will bring down the high cost of high-end servers, routers and production equipment for animation and media to global levels. Today, these rates are around 150 per cent of those prevailing in some of the other Asian countries which are competing with companies in India.”
The genesis for this argument is to be found in the revenue models for ISPs globally. In the US and some other parts of the world, subscribers pay nothing or a very small fee to access the net. The ISPs subsidise the cost of offering connectivity through advertising and e-commerce revenues which are still sorely lacking in India.
Though internet access rates are falling, they still hover around the Rs 5,000 mark for a 500-hour account. Add to it the local telephony charge (which works out close to Rs 28 an hour in Mumbai and Delhi), and the cost becomes prohibitive.
What compounds the matter further is the low bandwidth and lower quality levels. Consider: India has a total of 165 mbps of bandwidth which is expected to rise to 300 mbps in the next 12 months, which compares poorly with Malaysia which alone can pump 5.5 gbps of data.
In terms of revenue, it has been accepted globally that advertising alone is not enough to cover costs and an ISP needs stable e-commerce billings to make profits. For that to happen, there is an urgent need for the internet to penetrate homes either through a PC or through other devices such as televisions.
Said Mr Kumar, “One reason for the growth and proliferation of TVs in India — around 55m — is the significantly lower cost compared to a PC. It would be desirable to drop duties on components and hardware used for manufacturing PCs, modems and other access devices for the industry to grow.”
Though some argue that there is a need to restrict duty cuts to just PCs as a means of internet access device, the greater need is to slash duties on cable modems which are currently charged an effective rate of nearly 61 per cent. Currently, a cable modem costs around Rs 15,000, which puts it beyond the reach of many. It’s not as if the potential for e-commerce is bleak. According to a survey done by Nasscom (National Association of Software and Service Companies), e-commerce revenues for the current financial year are pegged at Rs 300 crore. But by ’04, Nasscom expects this figure to rise to a phenomenal Rs 10,000 crore.
For that to happen, most ISPs need to invest heavily in setting up and expanding their networks which might prove difficult for small ISPs. Though Satyam Infoway, the first private sector ISP to launch its services and list on the Nasdaq, may be a shining star on the ISP horizon, smaller ISPs are restricted in funding options. As a result, the ISP Association of India is making a strong case to allow ISPs to issue tax-free bonds, under Section 10(23)G of the Income Tax Act, to raise long-term finance. The association is also making representations for the industry to be considered as an infrastructure sector and be treated at par with telecom services.

      Glamour still under cover
      FEB 14 - FEB 19 2000

THE VSNL stock has been attracting the attention of leading Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) and mutual funds (MFs) for a very basic reason that the company is the most profiatble internet services provider across the globe. Besides, the likelihood of a New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)listing and a possible split of the company involving hive-off of internet services have been major stock drivers in the recent past. We believe that these two events would take place in the near future. While the street target for the stock is Rs 6000, we feel that the stock would be a gainer in the medium term.
While the core basic telephony business is showing steady growth, value-added services like internet and leased line services are adding glamour to the company. Government divestment from the stock is expected to improve liquidity at the counter. The stock is quite cheap as per international valuations and positives on the counter overweigh concerns.

      Brief Background
VSNL is India’s external telecom corporation responsible for providing and maintaining external telecom facilities to Indian telecom customers, As a result, it is India’s gateway to the world. VSNL’s objective is to create a global and seamless network of information superhighways, to connect people and computers cost effectively and efficiently. VSNL at present offers basic services, specialised services, value added services and business services.
Basic services comprise of telephony, telex and telegraph while specialised services include video conferencing, television/video uplinking, programme transmission services and INMARSAT mobile services. The value-added services include e-mail, internet, EDI and GPSS. Business services include leased line services, IBS services, managed data services and frame relay services.
In its mobile services, VSNL provides voice, data and fax services for marine, airline and land mobile community. VSNL also participates in aeronautical communications which include business communications, aviation and flight control and distress alert.
VSNL’s business services are at par with those in the world and include multimedia services, global virtual private networks, ISDN, BISDN and VSAT KU-Band networks.
The company also has a deep association with global telecom organisations. India is a founder member among 87 signatories/ shareholers of Inmarsat Holdings Ltd, an organisation dealing with mobile communications. India has a share of 2.0231 per cent in that company. India is also a founder member and a major shareholder in ICO Global Communications, an organisation providing global satellite personal mobile communication services. India holds a share of 6.5 per cent. VSNL also has a relationship with the Commonwealth Telecom Organisation, Asia Pacific Telecommunity and International Telecommunciations Union.

      Business Outlook
THE tariff rebalancing done by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India reducing long distance tariffs will help VSNL garner higher outgoing traffic volumes. The current agreement ensures Rs 10 per minute to VSNL. This protects VSNL from falling settlement rates. In addition, it benefits from increased out volumes without losing out on tariff declines. A one per cent change in volumes leads to a 2.8 per cent change in its EPS. VSNL is a net foreign exchange earner and as a result improves its bottomline with a depreciating rupee.
VSNL has a large subscriber base of internet users. This is growing rapidly despite increasing competition. VSNL can unlock large values by strategic sale or alliance or value addition.
Currently, VSNL operates through 10 international gateways. The international telecom circuits are derived from INTELSAL and INMARSAT communication satellites and submarine cables. VSNL is also a participant in SEA-ME-WE submarine cable.
Further development plans include heavy investments in additional cable and satellite circuits, in global satellite consortia and regional hub projects designed to carry neighbouring country traffic. The infrastructure would help VSNL enter into the lucrative domestic long distance sector, when it opens up. VSNL’s growth plans are aimed at positioning itself as a wholesaler. This would place VSNL in a comfortable position, when the monopoly status ends.
As per the World Trade Organisation agreement, the monopoly status is to end by 2004. The current strategy of the company is to place itself as a `service provider to service provider’, becoming basically a wholesaler. Thus, when global players enter this market, VSNL would be in a position to leverage on its infrastructure to shift to high volumes-low margin business. VSNL is likely to hive off its value added segment to VSSL - a 100 per cent subsidiary - for better customer focus and be in a position to compete as the market matures.
VSNL is a net cash company. It is investing in improving infrastructure, increasing infrastructure and emerging technologies. This would help it in the long run, especially when the monopoly ends, when it would have positioned itself as a wholesaler. With tariff rebalancing, international call charges falling, the incoming-to-outgoing call ratio growth would reduce. This would reduce risks from falling settlement rates and help VSNL gain from an increase in outgoing call volumes.
The value added segment would help maintain margins and increase its contribution to VSNL’s topline and bottomline. VSNL has consistently created value. There is also a huge potential in the internet segment, which has yet not been fully captured by the company.

      The Future
IN its strategy to improve quality, VSNL intends to go closer to the customers through new gateways, planned inter-gateways networking for improved reliability, better transmission links with roof-top earth stations, better provisioning on routes and traffic overflows and better customer srvices.
VSNL intends to improve customer services by introducing a single window clearance system. Customers will be required to book all their requirements with VSNL and VSNL would in turn place orders with DoT/MTNL authorities for the national segment and local leads. The customer would also report all faults to VSNL for prompt attention on all segments.
VSNL weighs the performance of its services on two parameters - Infrastructure, which includes improving exchanges, gateways and transmission; and customer services, including performance monitoring of key parameters and assessment of customer needs. For a reliable 64 KBPS performance, VSNL has taken the initiative for cesium clock timings, point-to-multi-point microwave links, standardised customer premises equipment and sophisticated test and measuring equipment.
VSNL has chalked out investment plans to address the demand for high quality global services by expanding capacity efficiently and providing substantial value added servies. Under the current equity holding pattern, the government holds 54 per cent while 30 per cent is held by GDRs. The rest is held by FIIs, FIs, mutual funds and the public.

      Guten Abend,

Panic tumbles down the market, says Street Walker

      FEBRUARY 23

The panic in the market was largely due to rumors of RBI getting strict with the loans to brokers and BSE increasing the cash portion of margin money from 25% to 50%. In the Sensex stocks most of them lost heavily. Infosys, Bajaj Auto, Larsen & Toubro and ITC hit the lower circuit. The other major losers in the Sensex were ACC, Guj Ambuja, Reliance, Telco, Glaxo, Hindalco and MTNL. The only significant gainer in the Sensex was IDBI (IT mania).
Most of the sectors (including software) lost heavily during the day. The largest losers not surprisingly were software stocks. It`s quite natural because if the intention of authorities is to reduce the net long positions the selling has to come in software stocks, which account for more than 40% of the total net long position.

VSNL earth stations in heavy traffic areas

      FEBRUARY 22

Videsh Sanchar Nigam will soon establish earth stations in the districts with a potential for high volume of international telecom traffic and Internet usage. Communication Minister Ram Vilas Paswan made this announcement here on Tuesday in response to a member`s demand to increase earth stations in the country at the meeting of the Consultative Committee attached to the Ministry of Communications.
Significantly, the minister also asked VSNL to evolve an effective advertising and marketing policy to increase its subscriber base, especially in the context of an emerging competitive environment.
VSNL has already introduced roaming facilities for Internet customers and will shortly provide facilities to open Internet accounts instantly using credit cards in other cities of the country. Currently, the facility is offered only in Mumbai.
The minister also outlined some of the steps taken by VSNL to boost its Internet business. These include off-the-shelf opening of new Internet accounts and the renewal of existing Internet accounts, revamping the help desk facilities with assurance of assistance to customers round-the-clock and payment facilities for the customers in various banks for Internet connections.
Paswan said that VSNL could face stiff competition once the ISPs were allowed to set up their own gateways and the broadcasters their own uplinking facilities. Hence, the company has chalked out plans for the development of infrastructure, IT systems and human resources during the 9th Five Year Plan.

      +++ Was steckt hinter den Sateliten-Aktivitäten ? +++

      SATELLITE MOBILE SERVICES

The 21st century will be the century of Wireless Communication and VSNL will be a partner in major initiatives in Satellite Mobile Services. VSNL is second largest shareholder in ICO Global Communications and exclusive franchise holder of ICO Global Personal Communications by Satellite (GMPCS) services in India. VSNL has committed an investment of US$150 million in ICO.
The ICO services are to be launched in India by 1999-2000. VSNL will act as a regional Hub to handle international & domestic traffic originating from the ICO system. In addition, VSNL is participating in the Iridium Mobile Satellite Project through the partnership of Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL&FS) Limited. VSNL will also operate as a gatewayfor Globalstar Mobile Services and maintain a gateway for the Afro Asian Satellite Communications System.

      VIDEO UP-LINKING

VSNL will install Earth Stations to meet the requirements of Uplinking TV programs from India for satellite broadcasting. At present VSNL provides such services through Intelsat satellites only. In the coming years uplinking will be provided through other satellite systems such as Asiasat and Apstar.

      DIRECT TO HOME SERVICES

Intelsat and other major satellite system owners are planning to introduce direct to home (DTH) TV services. In the future, DTH is expected to have a lucrative market in the Indian Ocean region. VSNL will provide ground facilities and make investments in the provisioning of this service.

      GLOBAL MULTIMEDIA SATELLITE SYSTEM

To provide multimedia services to customers, VSNL will participate in ventures to provide high data rate services for Multimedia Applications with the help of emerging Global Multimedia Satellite Systems.

Vergleicht selber:

      09.3.2000

      BSE....5328.79(-3.2%)
      VSNL...ca 1890 Rs
      MTNL....ca 340 Rs

      VSNL aktuell in D: 32-33 E

      Some dangerous talks...
The markets opened at 5580, up by 69 points but like it has been happening during the week the slide followed in the next fifteen minutes the Sensex was at 5500 levels. The slide continued and by noon the Sensex was around 5300 levels. Later for most part of the day the Sensex moved in the range 5300-5340 before closing at 5329, down by 183 points. The intra-day high low gap was 329 points.

Infosys, HLL, Mahindra & Mahindra, BSES, MTNL, ICICI, SBI and Reliance were the major losers in the Sensex. NIIT counter witnessed buying since the morning and was sustained till the end. In the last session there was some fresh buying at blue chip counters like HPCL, Tisco, Indian Hotels and Telco.

Today more or less the markets lacked the lustre and most of them seemed to be in the mood of squaring-off the positions. Barring few hotel stocks, paint stocks, FMCG (only selected) stocks most of the other stocks seemed to be in the nervous zone. Naturally, the most active software, media and telecom stocks were to be the most affected. Few exceptions in the software were DSQ Software, Citicorp and Fujitsu ICIM.

The talk in the markets if true, will probably prove really dangerous for the markets. The market is probably witnessing the tussle between the new economy stocks operator (specialist in software, media and selected pharma stocks) and old economy stocks operator (loyal to automobiles, FMCG and banking counters). Moreover, the increasing rift between these two operators has resulted in sharp onslaught faced by the counters of the opposite parties despite considerable support to prop up their respective counters. This trend is quite unhealthy for the market as the fundamentally sound stocks also have been beaten down to the ridiculous levels. And the overall losers in the market, again, are the retail investors who are unable to understand the sharp volatility of the Sensex as well as the behavior of the certain stocks.

Yesterday FIIs turnover touched Rs16.09bn, which is a record high for a single day in the year 2000. FIIs sold shares worth Rs8.41bn and bought shares worth Rs7.68bn resulting in net sales of Rs729mn (US$16.7mn) for the day. It seems that the FIIs are churning their portfolios in a big way.

      Sentimentally yours,

Usw. usw.

Wie Du siehst, schwer zu entscheiden. Vieleicht sehen wir ja eine Kursmanipulation a la S-p-a-r-ta / H-a-r-t-c-o-u-r-t. Immerhin steht ein NASDAQ Listing bevor etc.
