Ahold Problems Go Beyond Foodservice
Probe May Lead to Parent Firm

NEW YORK, Feb. 28 -- Although Royal Ahold NV has publicly blamed its accounting scandal largely on its Columbia-based subsidiary, U.S. Foodservice, the company`s lawyers turned over evidence of a much more far-reaching problem to prosecutors, sources familiar with the investigation said today.
Armed with the results of the company`s own investigation, the Justice Department today officially tapped the Manhattan U.S. attorney`s office to lead the probe in the United States, the sources said. That choice is a sign that officials expect the case to stretch beyond Maryland, the other possible option for lead prosecutor.
The early evidence suggests that the probe is headed toward the Dutch parent of Giant Food Inc., the sources said. The Securities and Exchange Commission is also investigating the events leading up to Ahold`s $500 million restatement and the ouster of Ahold`s two top executives Monday.
"There are indications that investigators will be looking at things far broader than the subsidiary in Maryland," one of the sources said. "The information the company has uncovered is far broader."
