Vancouver firm links with General Dynamics to sell biohazard detection gear
      2/5/04

VANCOUVER, Feb 05, 2004 (The Canadian Press via COMTEX) --
Response Biomedical Corp. announced Thursday it has formed an alliance with General Dynamics Canada Ltd., aimed at integrating the two companies`defence-oriented biological agent detection systems.

The Vancouver-based company said in a news release th
at its RAMP system provides rapid, reliable on-site test results to identify or rule out specific biological threats. RAMP stands for rapid analyte measurement platform. The unit is about the size of a standard office telephone.

The 4WARN system marketed by General Dynamics Canada enables early detection of biological agents through continuous air monitoring.

Once integrated, the systems will be able to both detect and specifically identify a variety of biological agents, Response said.

`We are pleased to collaborate with General Dynamics to combine our state-of-the-art technologies to produce an unprecedented biological agent detection and identification capability that will enable military and homeland security organizations to better defend against, and manage the consequences of, terrorist use of biological agents,`said Response president Bill Radvak said in a news release.

The alliance is aimed at creating new market opportunities for Response`s system as an extension of the 4WARN system within military and homeland security markets, he said.

The initial marketing effort is aimed at supplying the British Royal Navy with biological detection technology on their ships. A decision is expected later this year.

Response (TSX:RBM) said it anticipates annual revenue directly as a result of this relationship to be about $5 million, including a long-term supply contract for the system`s consumable components.

Response said it has sold more than 80 RAMP systems to date to purchasers including the U.S. Marine Corps, the states of New Jersey and West Virginia, the city of Philadelphia and various U.S. public health and emergency response agencies.

The company said it has also recently trained additional United Nations biological weapons inspectors on its system and sold some to the Japanese military for use by its contingent working in Iraq.

The system`s medical uses include early detection for heart attack and West Nile virus, and biodefence applications to detect anthrax, smallpox, ricin and botulinum toxin.
