When Seagram reported earnings last month, Bronfman said at the time that he was "frustrated" by reports that the Canadian-based company will either sell Universal Studios or the entire firm. Speaking to analysts on a conference call, Bronfman said he likes all of the company`s businesses, and intends to be its CEO for "a very long time."
The talks between News and Seagram executives resulted in no deal, according to a report in the online version of Newsweek magazine and another in the New York Post, which is owned by News Corp.
According to the article, News Corp. wanted to buy all of Seagram, but objected to the company`s asking price, said by unnamed Hollywood sources to be $25 billion.
But Bronfman Jr. reportedly has also sought out France`s Vivendi as a possible buyer for Seagram, which owns Universal Studios and Universal Music Group in addition to such distillery brands as Chivas Regal and Martell.
An article in Business Week said France`s Canal Plus had also held talks with Seagram.
Some analysts have said it is more likely that Bronfman would consider selling only the entertainment group, because the segment has lost money for Seagram.
In January, Internet portal AOL (AOL: news, msgs) agreed to buy Time Warner (TWX: news, msgs), the world`s largest media company, in a deal now valued at about $163.3 billion. In the wake of that deal, many observers said Time Warner`s entertainment rivals -- News, Seagram, Disney, Viacom and others -- might have to find ways to get bigger, either by teaming up with another traditional media player or a ".com" company, such as Yahoo.
