Genus Reports Fourth Quarter 2001 Results
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Feb. 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Genus, Inc. (Nasdaq: GGNS - news) reported financial results for its fourth quarter ended December 31, 2001. Net sales were $5.7 million, in line with the guidance given on January 3, 2002 compared to net sales of $15.7 million for the same quarter of 2000. Net loss for the fourth quarter was $5.2 million or $(0.23) per share, and included severance charges of $250,000 and incremental research and development expenses of $500,000 associated with the building of demonstration equipment, compared to net income of $1.1 million, or $0.06 per share in the same quarter of 2000.

For the twelve months ending December 31, 2001, revenue was $48.7 million, representing 20 percent growth over the corresponding period of 2000. Net loss for the twelve months ended December 31, 2001 was $6.7 million or $(0.31) per share, compared to a loss of $2.9 million or $(0.15) per share, before cumulative effect of change in accounting principle, for the same period in 2000.

The decline in net income in the fourth quarter of 2001 was primarily due to lower revenues, down $10 million compared to the fourth quarter of 2000. This was a result of delays in customer acceptances of shipments made earlier in the year and due to fewer orders in the third quarter of 2001 in comparison with the corresponding quarter in 2000. Gross profit as a percentage of revenues declined to 12 percent in the fourth quarter of 2001 from 41 percent in the same quarter of 2000, driven by lower revenues and higher manufacturing variances caused by under utilization of capacity in the manufacturing and service departments. Research and development expenses were $3.3 million in the fourth quarter of 2001, up $400,000 from the fourth quarter of 2000. This reflects incremental expenses associated with the building of demonstration equipment, partially offset by headcount reductions and other cost saving actions initiated by the company in October 2001. Selling, general and administrative expenses were $2.4 million, including severance costs of $125,000 related to a layoff action implemented in October 2001, compared to $2 million in the fourth quarter of 2000.

Net loss for 2001 was $6.7 million, $3.8 million higher than the loss in 2000 before cumulative effect of change in accounting principle, reflecting a $3.8 million increase in operating expenses, including both R&D and SG&A expenses, incurred in the first nine months of the year. As a result of layoff and other cost cutting actions implemented starting October 2001, ongoing operating expense run-rate is around $4.8 million a quarter, approximately the same as in the fourth quarter of 2000. Additionally, gross profit margin in 2001 was 33 percent of revenues compared to 40 percent in 2000. Although average selling prices were approximately the same in both years, additional costs were incurred related to capacity under utilization and manufacturing inefficiencies. Going forward, gross profit margin is expected to be around 35 to 45 percent of revenues.

``These figures are in line with our revised expectations and reflect the reduced number of orders we started to receive from the middle of last year,`` commented Bill Elder, Genus` CEO. ``Taking a positive out of what has undoubtedly been a tough year for the industry, we have achieved double-digit growth. This growth is in direct relation to the continued acceptance of ALD technology in multiple markets.``

Total bookings for 2001 were $33.1 million while total shipments were $38.2 million. Relating to customer activity in 2001, Genus exited the year with a total of seven customers, an increase from three in 2000. With market diversification a key strategy in 2001, Genus confirmed two of these new customers were using Genus` equipment for non-semiconductor applications. Genus` atomic layer deposition was qualified for production in the data storage industry. Within the semiconductor industry, Genus also recorded orders for two ALD systems from two new customers in Japan. Asuka, a major Japanese project sponsored by eleven Japanese semiconductor companies, received delivery of the industry`s first 300mm ALD tool in December after meeting rigorous factory testing.

Looking forward, Genus is now in the advanced stages of qualifying and commercializing its ALD product lines for full volume production. ``We look forward to more positive growth in 2002,`` added Elder. ``The level of inquiries and requests we are receiving from the semiconductor industry makes me confident that our ALD product lines will move aggressively to volume production in the near future. We have also invested in the very highest caliber of management in 2001, employing the quality of people who will continue to drive the commercialization of ALD. Furthermore, we have improved our cash position and that will enable us to continue to invest in the areas that provide competitive advantages.``

Genus ended the fourth quarter and year-end 2001 with cash and marketable securities of $3.0 million down from $3.1 million in the fourth quarter and year-end 2000. Additionally, Genus completed agreements of $15 million credit line facilities with Silicon Valley Bank, Aozora Bank and Citicapital Since year-end 2001, Genus has raised $8.7 million with a private placement.

      Finanzierung.

      Gruß SR
