      Fedorov saves uninspired Wings

He scores tying goal, winner over Jackets
      March 22, 2002

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Sergei Fedorov saved the Red Wings on Thursday night. First, he forced overtime with 4:47 remaining in regulation. Then, he scored 25 seconds into OT. That allowed the Wings to beat the Blue Jackets, 3-2, despite playing much less than their best yet again.

Since reaching 100 points with a 5-2 victory March 9 at St. Louis, the Wings have gone a lethargic 3-3. They suffered a 2-1 loss Tuesday night to Anaheim, the Western Conference`s second-worst team. Columbus, the West`s worst, outshot them, 22-21.

"It was a struggle throughout the whole game," Fedorov said.

The Wings always have struggled at Nationwide Arena. In five games there since Columbus joined the league last season, the Wings have won four in overtime and lost one in regulation.

Ray Whitney gave the Jackets the lead 2:03 into the second period. Kirk Maltby responded with a lucky goal at 6:58 when the puck took a funny bounce off goaltender Marc Denis. Then Jaroslav Spacek, whom Columbus acquired Tuesday from Chicago, scored shorthanded at 10:46.

"In the second period, I thought we were slumping," said defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom, who had three assists while paired with trade-deadline acquisition Jiri Slegr. "I thought we played right into their hands.

"We were bringing the puck up, and they were just waiting for us, just waiting for a turnover. Instead of making a good play, getting the puck in, we were trying to just skate through the neutral zone. It`s tough to do against a team like that."

As the third period wound down, the Wings were 0-for-5 on the power play. They needed a break. Brendan Shanahan -- who has failed to score his 500th goal for eight games now, but has eight assists in that span -- fired a shot from the slot. The puck hit defenseman Rostislav Klesla`s skate and skipped into the right circle.

      Right to Fedorov.

"I was sort of, `Ooh, it`s the puck coming,` " said Fedorov, who put it into an empty net.

In the final minute, Kris Draper skated by the Columbus bench. Earlier, he had hooked the Jackets` Kevin Dineen, Dineen had dived and both had taken penalties. Well, now Draper`s stick was over the boards. Dineen grabbed it and broke it. Draper grabbed a Jacket`s stick, but it was right-handed, and he`s left-handed.

"That does me no good," Draper said, "so I gave it back to him."

Draper, truth be told, shoved it back to him. He and Dineen went off again with 48.4 seconds left.

From the penalty box in overtime, they watched as the puck took another lucky bounce for the Wings. It went right to Fedorov again. This time, Fedorov was in full stride behind the Columbus net, and he wrapped around and stuffed it between Denis` pads.

"A lot of guys wouldn`t make that play," coach Scotty Bowman said. "He just came right out so quick with his hands."

In the 11 games since the Olympic break, Fedorov has seven goals and seven assists.

"They checked us well and they got the lead," Bowman said, "and we were fortunate that we came up with two big plays by Sergei."

Detroit-Colorado rivalry heats up with fight
      By JOHN MARSHALL
      AP Sports Writer
      March 23, 2002

DENVER (AP) -- The rivalry between the Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche took an ugly turn Saturday when every player on the ice squared off during a fight in the third period.

The fight started when Detroit`s Kirk Maltby ran into Colorado goalie Patrick Roy with 10:04 left and ended up in the Colorado goal. Roy jumped on Maltby after the collision and hit him several times while both players were lying in the net.

A scrum broke out in front of the net, then each player paired off with an opponent as gloves and sticks flew across the ice. Most of the players locked jerseys, but Colorado`s Pascal Trepanier and Detroit`s Sean Avery had their gloves off and were throwing punches.

Detroit goalie Dominik Hasek jumped into the fray a few seconds later, skating the length of the ice before slipping into the back of Roy. Officials had to separate the two goalies, who took off their masks off and jawed at each other halfway down the ice.

Fans chanted ``Roy! Roy!`` as the officials separated the players.

``I was a bit surprised,`` Roy said of Hasek skating to his end of the ice. ``Was it out of line? I think it was. He was probably trying to prove something. I don`t` know what it was.``

The teams combined for 16 penalty minutes in the sequence, with Detroit getting nine minutes.

Avery received 5 minutes for fighting, Hasek got 2 for leaving the crease and Maltby 2 for goalie interference. Roy received 2 minutes for roughing and Trepanier got 5 minutes for fighting.

``I saw Patrick fighting on the other side,`` Hasek said. ``My responsibility is to get there and help my teammates, but I stepped on a stick a couple of feet from Patrick and I slipped down. I am here to help my teammates. I was ready. If something happens, I am ready for him any time.``

Detroit won the game 2-0, but not before it got rough again late in the third period.

Mike Keane ran into Hasek with 4:11 left and was knocked to the ice as he tried to get up. Hasek took a couple of shots at Keane, then Chris Chelios cross checked him twice while he was on the ice.

Chelios hit Keane at least twice more after he got up, then started yelling and pointing at one of the officials. He continued to argue when he got to the penalty box and was called for a game misconduct.

In all, Chelios received 16 minutes worth of penalties: two cross-checking minors, an unsportsmanlike minor and a 10-minute game misconduct.

``We were concerned about Hasek and guys going into the net over the last two or three weeks,`` Detroit coach Scotty Bowman said. ``We watched the referees to look at Keane and watch him, and he went into him.

``Chelios wanted to show the rest of the team you can`t have the goalie have unnecessarily contacted.``

There were 56 minutes in penalties for the game, including 42 in the third period.

``It was a weird game; I`m sure both teams feel that way,`` Colorado`s Adam Foote said. ``It looked like both teams were getting frustrated at the end. They let everything go until the end.``

      Vorletztes Spiel der Regular Season:

      Detroit - St.Louis Blues 2:3 OT

      April 13, 2002

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Chris Pronger made goalie Dominik Hasek pay for leaving the net open.

Pronger`s seventh goal of the season came 3:51 into overtime, giving St. Louis a 3-2 victory Saturday over Detroit, the Blues` first win against the Red Wings in two years. The Blues are 4-1 in their last five games and 7-3 in their last 10.

``There`s not much to it,`` Pronger said. ``The puck squirted to the right side. (Scott) Young was trying to get in the way of the pass and it went off his foot. I just grabbed it and threw it at the net. I didn`t even know he (Hasek) was out of the net.``

The confusing goal was set up by a scramble in front of the net between Hasek and Doug Weight, who returned to the Blues lineup after missing 20 games with a sprained pelvis and damaged muscles.

The two became tangled to the right of the goal, and Pronger was at the left point and fired the puck at the net. Hasek was able to get twist back and get his stick on it but it wasn`t enough to keep the puck out.

``We were chatting with Doug Weight, and at the same time Pronger somehow got to the puck and he had a wide open net,`` Hasek said. ``I was out of position because I was talking with Doug Weight. I thought we had the puck under control, that`s why me and Doug Weight were talking to each other at the same time Pronger was shooting the puck.

``By the time I found out Pronger was shooting, it was too late.``

Weight, too, was confused by the play.

``I was swinging at it,`` Weight said. ``I slashed him (Mathieu Dandenault). He two-handed me. Then Hasek came out. I thought the puck was in his feet. Dominik came out to slash me. It was absolutely surreal to me. He was looking right at me and I saw his face go `oh shoot` and the puck was in the net.``

Count Blues coach Joel Quenneville among the surprised as well.

``I couldn`t believe it happened,`` Quenneville said. ``I looked at the wide-open net and went `Wow.` I saw the puck go to Pronger and I saw the net empty. It was good to see it though.

``It was very dramatic. It was a long time coming.``

Detroit is 3-1 this season against St. Louis and was 3-0-2 last season. The Blues had not defeated Detroit since scoring a 4-1 victory on Feb. 8, 2000. The last home victory was Oct. 30, 1999.

The Red Wings took a 1-0 lead on their first shot. Brett Hull scored 2:39 into the first period on a deflection of a shot by Chris Chelios. Pavel Datsyuk stripped Pronger of the puck behind the net and passed out to the top of the right circle to Chelios, who took a slap shot. Hull got his stick on it to beat goalie Brent Johnson for his 30th goal of the season.

It was the 700th career assist for Chelios, who has played in 1,259 games. He is the 37th player in NHL history to reach that mark and the 12th active player to have 700 or more assists.

St. Louis tied it 1-1 at 5:38 on a goal by Dallas Drake, who beat Hasek from just inside the right post.

Philadelphia, New York Islanders, New Jersey Devils,
Boston, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Carolina, Detroit, St.Louis, Chicago, Colorado, Vancouver, San Jose, Los Angeles, Phoenix:eek:

      Top-Favoriten:

      Colorado Avalanche
      Detroit Red Wings

      Team Report · 4/9/02

By Paul Harris, Detroit Hockey Weekly

Although it`s never good for a team to struggle, the Red Wings can probably be excused for their 1-2-3-1 record and seemingly indifferent play in their past seven games.

Having already clinched the Presidents` Trophy, which goes to the team with the NHL`s best record, Detroit is resting a few regulars in each game, particularly those with nagging injuries. For instance, neither Nicklas Lidstrom nor rookie center Pavel Datsyuk traveled with the team last week on its West Coast swing to Anaheim, Los Angeles and San Jose. The team went 0-2-1 without the two players.

Although the company line for any team has always been that it wants to be playing well going into the playoffs, the reality is that Detroit has nothing to gain by winning any of its remaining regular-season games.

The Red Wings` dominance has almost put them in a no-win situation. When they lose and are unimpressive, as they have been, some worry they won`t be ready for the playoffs. But if they were still winning nearly every game, as they had for most of the season, fans and critics would be reminded of the 1995-96 season, when the Red Wings won an NHL-record 62 games:eek: but were eliminated in the Western Conference Finals by Colorado.

But because the team is made up mostly of veteran superstars, one of them being Dominik Hasek, there`s every chance Detroit will be able to turn on the switch when the playoffs start.:D
