      hallo,

(20.09.2007 si/as/tw).

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Gold futures rallied past $735 an ounce in electronic trading late Tuesday to touch their highest level since 1980 following the Federal Reserve's decision to cut the benchmark federal funds rate for the first time in more than four years.
"Following the Fed announcement, December gold moved through resistance at $730 and is now poised to extend its rally toward $790," said Darin Newsom, a senior analyst at DTN.
Gold for December delivery traded as high as $735.50 an ounce in electronic trading by late Tuesday afternoon after the Fed announcement. The contract had closed out the regular New York Mercantile Exchange session at $723.70, down 10 cents.
The June gold futures contract last year climbed as high as $732 in electronic trading.
Tuesday's high above $735 surpassed that level, and was the highest level the Nymex has seen since 1980, according to several analysts.
The record intraday all-time high for a benchmark gold futures contract on the exchange stands at $875 from Jan. 21, 1980, according to a Nymex spokeswoman.
The Federal Open Market Committee cut its benchmark federal funds rate by a half percentage point to 4.75% Tuesday, citing turmoil in financial markets as a threat to economic growth. See full story.
"The 50 basis-point cut by the Federal Reserve affirms their strategy of sacrificing the U.S. dollar to keep the liquidity in the system alive," said Peter Spina, an analyst at GoldSeek.com.
"The decision is another nail in the coffin for the U.S. dollar and will further extend the gold price rally," he said in emailed comments.
In the coming weeks and months, "$800-plus gold is headed our way," he said. "Gold will continue to see a huge influx of investment demand."
The Fed "recognizes that the market is dealing with 'inflation' well and that the market looks decently strong," said Zachary Oxman, a senior trader at Wisdom Financial. "Gold and crude should improve as they are strongly pegged to the economy right now."
Oxman expects gold prices to trade at $750 in the near term.
Overall, the reaction to the Fed decision was "pretty clear and not very surprising," said Jon Nadler, an analyst at Kitco Bullion Dealers -- with the dollar losing ground, gold gaining, and the broader U.S. stock market moving higher.
"There will be more to come, as the adjustment sinks in," he said in emailed comments. "This magnitude rate cut had been factored in -- now we get to digest what may be next."
      A bearish bull
But in comments ahead of the Fed decision Tuesday, Ned Schmidt, editor of the Value View Gold Report, said he considers gold as "seriously overbought" as a result of expectations for lower U.S. interest rates and financial concerns in the U.K.
He said a correction to $680-$690 for gold prices was likely after the Fed announcement.
But whatever the Fed does is "good for gold investors," he said in emailed remarks. If rates are cut, it'll confirm monetary will at the Fed and assure a new high for gold by year end, he said.
And if rates are left unchanged, the "housing and mortgage debacle will continue to dominate financial markets," he said. "Gold is the only safe haven in such an environment."
Given all that, Schmidt said $1,400-plus gold prices are "no longer a dream, but a reasonable expectation."
Adding support to gold Tuesday, Gov. Miguel Angel Fernandez Ordonez said the Bank of Spain won't be selling more gold this year. Under the central bank's gold agreement the Spanish central bank had been the largest seller of gold this year, according to reports.
Other metals prices finished Tuesday's regular session higher. December silver rose 2.5 cents to close at $12.925 an ounce and October platinum gained $4.10 to end at $1,306.70 an ounce. December palladium added 35 cents to finish at $335.70 an ounce and December copper edged up 2.8 cents to close at $3.448 a pound.
Gold warehouse inventories rose by 72,941 troy ounces to stand at 7.07 million troy ounces, according to Nymex data as of late Monday. Silver supplies fell by 1.2 million troy ounces to stand at 132.4 million troy ounces, and copper supplies fell 141 short tons to stand at 20,317 short tons.
      Indexes end higher
Indexes tracking mining and metals stocks closed higher Tuesday, reflecting gains in metals prices following the Fed move.

      NEWMONT Mining beginnt umfassende Ausbruchsbewegung

      Newmont Mining (Nachrichten/Aktienkurs) - Kürzel: NEM - ISIN: US6516391066

Börse: NYSE in USD / Kursstand: 44,21 $

      Kursverlauf vom 20.10.2004 bis 07.09.2007 (log. Kerzenchartdarstellung / 1 Kerze = 1 Woche)

Newmont Shares Surge on Speculation of Barrick Takeover Bid

By Jeff Kearns and Stewart Bailey

Aug. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Newmont Mining Corp. rose the most in seven weeks on the New York Stock Exchange and options trading in the stock surged on speculation that the world's second-biggest gold producer may be acquired by larger rival Barrick Gold Corp.

Speculation that Barrick may bid for Newmont ``is widespread in the market,'' said Charl Malan, a fund manager at Van Eck Associates Corp. in New York, which owns stock in both companies.

Denver-based Newmont gained $1.88, or 4.7 percent, to $42.33 as of 11:37 a.m. for the largest advance on the Standard & Poor's 500 Index. The number of call options traded rose to more than quadruple the 20-day average.

``We've previously said that rumor has no substance and that very much remains the case today,'' said Vince Borg, a spokesman for Barrick, which is based in Toronto.

Barrick also denied market speculation that it would bid for Newmont on March 16, after Newmont's shares had gained to their highest in a week.

Barrick shares fell 96 cents, or 3 percent, to $31.17.

Gold producers are turning to acquisitions to bolster their metal reserves amid a dearth of new gold discoveries, dwindling global output and surging costs. A combination of Barrick and Newmont would create a company with almost three times the production of South Africa's AngloGold Ashanti Ltd., its nearest rival, according to the companies' Web sites.

Newmont Chief Executive Officer Richard T. O'Brien said July 24 the company may consider making takeovers after its shares fell 15 percent in the past year and the company lost its place as the world's biggest gold-mining company.

      Options Jump

Implied volatility, the key factor in pricing options contracts, jumped to 40.44 percent from 34.07 percent. The price of the most-active contracts, September $45 calls, rose fivefold to 75 cents.

``People are thinking this thing is going to the moon,'' said Todd Wilemon, an options trader at Keck Securities in San Francisco. ``People are playing the upside, expecting it to move up to 45 to 50 over the next 60 days. Those are speculative calls that this is going to be taken over.''

Calls give the right to buy a security for a certain amount, called the strike price, by a given date. Puts convey the right to sell.

Birim Concludes an Agreement with Newmont to Joint Venture the Banda Ahenkro Property on the Sefwi Belt and to Waive Back-In Rights on Birim's Bui Properties in Ghana

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Aug. 28, 2007) - Birim Goldfields Inc. (TSX:BGI) ("Birim" or "the Company") is pleased to report that it has concluded a two-part agreement with Newmont Ghana Gold Limited and Newmont USA Limited, subsidiaries of Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE & ASX: NEM; TSX: NMC) ("Newmont") comprising:

      - a joint venture agreement on the 488.3 km2 Banda Ahenkro Property on the Sefwi Belt; and,

      - the waiving of Newmont's back-in rights on Birim's Bui Belt Properties.

Under the terms of the agreement, Newmont will waive their historical back-in right to projects on Birim's thirteen properties within the boundary of the old Bui Reconnaissance License. In exchange for this waiver, Birim will grant Newmont an initial 49% equity interest in Birim's Banda Ahenkro Property on the Sefwi Belt (see Note 1). Newmont will have the right to earn another 21% (up to 70%) by spending US$1,500,000 on exploration over four years, subject to minimum expenditures of US$300,000 in Year 1, US$350,000 in Year 2, US$400,000 in Year 3 and US$450,000 in Year 4. Newmont may then elect to earn an additional 10% interest (up to 80%) by completing a feasibility study on the property. The agreement remains subject to the normal statutory and regulatory approvals.

Birim has a dominant position on one of Ghana's relatively under-explored gold belts, the Bui Belt. This comprises a portfolio of fifteen licenses, of which thirteen prospecting licenses were "cherry picked" after systematic regional exploration by Birim from the greater than 7,000 km2 Bui reconnaissance license acquired from Santa Fe Mining in 1998. The terms agreed with Santa Fe at the time included a right (subsequently inherited by Newmont) allowing them a once-off back-in to any project with a completed bankable feasibility study located within the area defined by the boundary of the original reconnaissance license.

"The transaction makes a lot of strategic sense for Birim," says Victor King, President and CEO for Birim. "Exploration progress on the Banda Ahenkro property will benefit from Newmont's broad exploration expertise and their specific experience on the Sefwi Belt, which hosts their multi-million ounce, world-class Ahafo Gold Mine. Our active involvement with Newmont at Banda Ahenkro also will benefit our efforts on Birim's other three properties on the Sefwi Belt, namely Nkenkasu, Bia Tano and Techimentia." King added, "Newmont's waiver to their inherited back-in right on our Bui properties will widen our options for funding exploration on this extensive land package. I believe that it is pragmatic for Birim to invite selected interested partners to assist in aggressively advancing exploration on some of our Bui licenses at this stage. This will maximize Birim's current leverage on the belt and optimize the potential for exploration success on all of the properties."

Birim Goldfields Inc. is an exploration company focused on gold exploration in West Africa and trades on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol BGI.

Notes : 1. The Government of Ghana retains a 10% free carried interest in all gold mining development projects in Ghana. Consequently, the interests specified in the agreement will apply to the 90% available interest, with the Government of Ghana holding the remaining 10%.
