Die Zahlen lassen doch ein KGV von um die 10 in 2009 vermuten...bei einem Marktführer, der sich die Kunden herauspickt...irgendwer (großes) brauchte wohl noch ganz dringend Cash...

First Solar (FSLR) is at it again. Along with its commercial and residential rooftop, and free field power plant segments, the thin-film solar module manufacturer has a lucrative new revenue stream. Call it the utility rooftop segment.

First Solar supplied modules and equipment for a Southern California Edison 2.2MW commercial rooftop project completed December 1st of last year in Fontana, California. And as one of the solar industry’s leaders, won the supplier bid for the second utility rooftop project of 1 MW in Chino.

Instead of meeting its California state requirement for Renewable Portfolio Standards by building solar power plants or buying from developers, SCE has proposed 150 solar PV installations on existing Southern California commercial rooftops. SCE has proposed up to fifty projects a year of 1 to 2 MW over the next five years. And First Solar is going along for the ride – at least on the first two deals.

SCE envisions building 250MW over that five year period, and as the supplier on the first two projects, First Solar is well positioned to take advantage of what the utility calls an “innovative solar rooftop initiative.” Unlike other commercial rooftop projects, the host is not the offtaker – targeted rooftops do not qualify for the net energy metering tariff so all energy produced will flow to the grid.

Factoring into the selection of First Solar as supplier to the SCE Commercial Rooftop Initiative was their position as industry low cost manufacturer. As of its third quarter at the end of September, cost per watt was $1.08. And First Solar can pass those low costs on to the next link in the solar value chain – in this case SCE. The utility forecast that average installation costs will be $3.50 per watt – about half of what it would cost otherwise.

New Product: First Solar’s FS Series 2 PV modules are specifically designed for power plants
28 January 2009 | By Síle Mc Mahon | Product Briefings > Power Generation

Product Briefing Outline: First Solar’s FS Series 2 PV Modules are designed for use in grid-connected, commercial power plants and are sold to leading system integrators, independent power project developers and utility companies worldwide. The modules are CdTe thin film in construction that will generally produce more electricity under real-world conditions than conventional solar modules with similar power ratings and the lowest cost per watt overall.

Problem: Cadmium Telluride is a direct bandgap semiconductor, which enables it to convert solar energy into electricity more efficiently (i.e., more watts per kg of material) than the indirect bandgap semiconductor materials used historically. As a result, it is capable of converting solar energy into electricity at an efficiency level comparable to historical technologies, but uses only about 1% of the semiconductor material required by traditional PV technologies.

Solution: Solar cells become less efficient at converting solar energy into electricity as their cell temperatures increase. However, the efficiency of Cadmium Telluride is less susceptible to cell temperature increases than traditional semiconductors, enabling First Solar thin film modules to generate relatively more electricity under high ambient (and therefore high cell) temperatures. The semiconductor material also converts low and diffuse light to electricity more efficiently than conventional cells under cloudy weather and dawn and dusk conditions. CdTe permits simple device structures and manufacturing processes, leading to low cost production.

Applications: Free Field Power Plants: Multi-megawatt grid-tied free field applications
Commercial Rooftop Systems: Large grid-tied, commercial rooftop applications

Platform: Front (substrate) and back (cover) laminated glass sheets are heat-strengthened to withstand handling and thermally induced stresses, while avoiding breakage over the 25+ year module life. Manufactured in highly automated state-of-the-art facilities certified to ISO9001:2000 quality and ISO14001:2004 environmental management standards. Tested by leading US and European institutes and certified for reliability and safety: Safety Class II; IEC 61646; CE Mark & UL 1703.

      Availability: Currently available.

First Solar Completes 10MW Thin Film Solar Power Plant for Sempra Generation

First Solar, Inc. (News) (Nasdaq: FSLR) today announced the completion of its first 10 megawatt (MW) ground-mounted photovoltaic power plant for Sempra (News) Generation near Boulder City, Nevada. This project is the largest thin film solar power plant in North America. First Solar served as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for this PV power plant and will provide monitoring and maintenance services for the plant over its lifetime. This project was constructed in less than six months.

The project was developed by Sempra Generation, which will own and operate the PV power plant. First Solar constructed the 10 MW PV power plant adjacent to Sempra's existing 480 MW El Dorado Energy power plant about 40 miles southeast of Las Vegas. The solar modules deployed in this ground-mount project were produced at First Solar's manufacturing facility in Perrysburg, Ohio.

First Solar is the world's leading supplier of thin film PV modules, stemming largely from the superior product design and unique semiconductor technology that makes First Solar modules the most cost-effective on the market. Underlying First Solar's success is a commitment to product life cycle management, as illustrated by the solar industry's first comprehensive module collection and recycling program. From raw material sourcing through end-of-life collection and recycling, First Solar is focused on creating cost-effective renewable energy solutions that protect and enhance the environment.

”The build out of this 10MW solar power plant from start to finish in less than six months marks the successful completion of our first utility scale EPC project,” said John Carrington, First Solar executive vice president marketing and business development. ”We applaud Sempra's commitment to expand their renewable energy portfolio-investing in clean energy infrastructure while creating green jobs and addressing climate change and energy independence.”

”This is a significant step in the development and deployment of renewable solar power,” said Michael W. Allman, president and chief executive officer of Sempra Generation. ”It reflects the commitment by Sempra Generation and western U.S. utilities to meet the challenges posed by climate change with reliable, renewable energy. The size and scope of this new solar generation facility clearly demonstrates that we can build projects on a scale that helps utilities meet their renewable energy goals.”
