      "Geely Automobile's First-Half Profit Falls 20%

      Colum Murphy@Colum_Mcolum.murphy@wsj.comBiography Updated Aug. 20, 2014 8:57 a.m. ET

» GELYY in Your Value Your Change Short position illustrates a growing problem for Chinese auto makers: Domestic brands in the world's biggest car market are losing ground as Chinese buyers continue to drive foreign brands off the lot.

The Chinese auto maker on Wednesday said it posted a disappointing 20% drop in net profit for the six months ended June. Much of the fall was due to a 29% drop in sales in its home market. Geely also cut its full-year sales target to 430,000 vehicles from 580,000 vehicles, which would represent a 22% decline from 2013.

In a statement, Geely said "competitive pressure on indigenous brands in the China market should continue to intensify in the coming years."

But Geely's parent also owns a foreign brand, Sweden's Volvo, which it acquired from Ford Motor Co. Volvo on Wednesday said it swung to a profit from a year-earlier loss, as sales in China surged 34%. Volvo Car Corp. Chief Executive Håkan Samuelsson said on Wednesday that its overall sales volume is now likely to grow 10% this year, up from a previous forecast of 5%.

China's ambition of nurturing its own automotive champions looks increasingly distant. In the first half of this year, Chinese domestic brands' share of the sedan market fell to 22% from 28% a year earlier, according to the government-backed China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. Meanwhile foreign brands have seen their market share rise in part because they enjoy a reputation for quality among Chinese consumers.

Like other private Chinese auto makers, Geely is facing headwinds as foreign car makers produce more cars in China, avoiding costly tariffs, and expand distribution networks in China's interior, which was once considered the domain of domestic car makers.

On Wednesday Geely said its first-half results didn't meet management's expectations. It cited a revamp of its product lineup, a rebranding program and an overhaul of its distribution system as factors contributing to the profit decline.

In April, Geely said it would scrap its three separate brands—Emgrand, Gleagle and Englon—in favor of a single Geely brand. The three-brand approach meant Geely had to develop vehicles in three different categories.

» BARC.LN in Your Value Your Change Short position analyst Yang Song said a key factor for Geely will be whether it can come up with new models. She said that the company's current lineup was "a bit dated."

"Right now it's not clear what models they will have and at what price point they will sell," she said in an interview ahead of Wednesday's results.

Geely said it plans to continue to replace older models with more sophisticated ones
      .

Geely said its net profit for the first six months of 2014 totaled 1.1 billion yuan ($181 million).

In addition to slackening demand for domestic Chinese cars, Geely sales have been hurt by turmoil in some of its markets abroad. The company exports cars mainly to Russia, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Egypt.

Hong Kong-listed Geely is controlled by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co.

      "Geely's 'half-tonner' still costs just R93k
      Mon, 18 Aug 2014 6:28 AM

The DFSK Loadhopper. Credit: Quickpic Geely South Africa says its DFSK Loadhopper pick-up hasn't been affected by the exchange rate, and is still available from just R92 990.

The DFSK Loadhopper boasts a loadbox measuring 2.0 metres by 1.3 metres, and can handle a payload of 600kg (it is classified as a "half-ton" vehicle under SA regulations).

"The Loadhopper packs a heavy punch when it comes to work load," said Devon Nassif, Sales and Dealer Development Manager of the Dacar Motor Corporation, importers and distributors of Geely passenger and DFSK light commercial vehicles.

"Our many loyal customers operating this gutsy little bakkie refer to it as a 'trailer with its own engine'. It really is the ideal vehicle for anything from garden rubble and mini-loads to collections, deliveries and general transport of basically anything."

The price for the 1.3-litre single-cab includes VAT, which Geely says can be claimed back from Sars at a rate of 14 percent if the vehicle is used for business purposes.

"This means in essence the Loadhopper 1.3 costs a mere R81 570," said Nassif.

The Loadhopper comes with a one-year or 60 000km warranty."

      Hmmm,

@Sangonr: Woher hat "seekingalpha" diese Info???

"...Between the middle of 2014 and the end of 2016, Geely will be launching a facelifted EC7, a new GX9 SUV, a new KC sedan, a pure electric vehicle, multiple plug-in hybrid variants of existing models, new EC7 sedans and GX7 SUVs, and an entirely new SUV model....."

Volvo erzielt dank China-Absatz wieder Gewinn

      Geely Automobile's first-half profit falls 20%

SHANGHAI--Chinese auto maker Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. said its net profit for the first six months of 2014 fell 20% from a year earlier to 1.1 billion yuan ($181 million).

Sales of Geely cars fell at home as local consumers shunned domestic brands and dropped abroad amid turmoil in key markets.

Hong Kong-listed Geely is controlled by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., whose chairman is Chinese auto pioneer Li Shufu.

The company sold 187,296 cars in the first half, down 29% from a year earlier.

Sales of Geely cars in China fell 28% in the first half of this year versus a year earlier; exports were down 32%. The company exported a total of 34,440 vehicles in the period.

In a statement, the company said the results didn't meet management's expectations. It also cited an overhaul of its product lineup, a rebranding program and an overhaul of its distribution system as factors contributing to the decline.

Geely is also owner of Swedish car brand Volvo. It acquired the brand from Ford Motor Co. in 2010.

Buoyant China lifts Geely's Volvo Car Group to H1 profit

      * H1 op profit 1.21 bln SEK vs year-ago loss of 577 mln

      * Strong demand in China, Europe offsets U.S. weakness

      * H1 revs rise to 64.8 bln SEK from 56.4 bln

STOCKHOLM, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Geely-owned carmaker Volvo Car Group said it swung to a profit for the first half of the year on the back of sharply rising sales in China and growth in Europe, more than offsetting lingering weakness in the United States.

Gothenburg-based Volvo, one of Sweden's top exporters and employers though a small player in the global autos industry, saw demand gain traction during the end of last year and figures on Wednesday showed momentum had carried into 2014.

Volvo, bought by China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. from Ford Motor Co. in 2010, reported operating earnings of 1.21 billion crowns ($176.5 million) versus a year-ago loss of 577 million.

Retail sales of its cars, which include models such as the XC60 crossover and S60 sedan, have been buoyed by double-digit growth in China, the home market of its parent which has eclipsed the United States as Volvo's top market.

"This first half result is both solid and encouraging," Volvo Chief Executive Hakan Samuelsson said in a statement.

Volvo's revenues rose to 64.8 billion crowns in January through June from 56.4 billion a year ago. While a dearth of new models has weighed on sales in the United States, rapid expansion in China has underpinned a growth for the group.

The company aims to nearly double annual sales to 800,000 cars by 2020 while angling to make real inroads in a premium market - dominated by larger rivals such as Daimler's Mercedes-Benz and BMW - that holds out the lure of higher prices.

Volvo is launching its new XC90 SUV, the first fully new car developed under its Chinese ownership, this month and has said it plans to price its new premium cars at the same level as those of its German competitors as it takes a step away from its roots as a no-frills family car.

Chinese firms keep UK auto industry ticking

Green car plans and investment help rejuvenate Coventry's auto credentials

The iconic black cabs of London may soon be the harbingers of a "green revolution" in the United Kingdom, thanks to the concerted efforts of a Chinese company.

Green shoots have already started sprouting in Coventry, a city in the county of West Midlands in the UK, where the local economy has a new lease of life thanks to the investment, jobs and green car plans announced by Chinese automaker Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. Other Chinese companies are also adding new vigor and jobs to the region, often described as the center of auto activity in the UK.

Chinese companies that seek to expand both their global reach and knowledge base see having manufacturers based there as a good strategy for development.

Geely paid 11 million pounds ($18.4 million) for 80 percent of Manganese Bronze HoldingsPlc, the parent of London Taxi Co, the firm that makes the iconic black cabs, in February 2013 after buying 20 percent in 2006. Seven months after the Manganese Bronze acquisition, Geely has commenced full production of the black cabs at London Taxi Co's old factory in Coventry.

London Taxi Co is scheduled to launch its TX5 model with an investment of 300 million pounds soon. The hybrid electric taxi is designed to have zero emissions, with its exterior in a similar shape to the current London black cab.

Peter Johansen, vice-president of Geely's black cab operation, said the company now possesses the requisite funds and the capabilities to improve the green credentials of its existing vehicle.

London Taxi Co currently employs 211 people, more than double the number it had before the Geely buyout. Of its current staff, 66 are engineers and technicians.

"We have not finalized our staff plans for next year, but I expect that we would employ around 250 directly or indirectly with further increases as we begin building and ramping up our new factory," Johansen said.

Daniel Li, chairman of the London Taxi Co and chief financial officer of Geely Group, said: "We will stick to our plans and deliver what we promise."

Sales revenue has risen steadily since the acquisition. Sales in 2013 reached 33.9 million pounds, and the figure was 25.3 million pounds for the first six months of 2014, a 245 percent year-on-year growth. The plant is scheduled to build 1,440 vehicles, mainly to be sold in the UK. In addition, about 850 vehicles will be made for overseas markets in Azerbaijan, Australia, Egypt and India.

Louise Bennett, chief executive of the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, said that "the manufacturing and engineering sector is vital for the past, present and future of Coventry and Warwickshire's economy".

"The automotive sector is very much part of that, and this region remains a hotbed of activity," he said.

Coventry is often called the home of the British auto industry and has spawned several big brands like Jaguar, Rover, Triumph, Healey and Riley. While the area is still at the heart of the UK's motor industry, government officials and business leaders are keen to ensure that the region retains the skills it needs to secure a bright future.

And that is precisely what Geely and other Chinese companies are helping do in Coventry.

"A year ago, when I visited London Taxi Co, it was rather quiet. But this time when I came to the factory, it was bustling with activity," said Zhou Xiaoming, minister counselor for economic and commercial affairs at the Chinese embassy in the UK.

Zhou said the auto industry has become "a hot spot of Chinese investment in the UK, especially in Coventry", adding that Chinese private firms are also playing an important role.

Shandong Yongtai Chemical Group Co, a privately owned manufacturer from Shandong province, took majority ownership of Covpress, a UK-based car parts maker, in a deal worth 30 million pounds in July 2013.

Covpress has seen remarkable growth since then. As a direct result of a 10 million-pound infusion into the industrial unit and 2.6 million pounds for machinery purchase, 75 new jobs have been created at the Canley-based business unit, with turnover up 22 percent in the last 12 months. New orders are also mounting, with the longest contract extending to 13 years.

You Xiaoming, CEO of Shandong Yongtai, said: "We have signed a five-year contract with a luxury sedan manufacturer worth 230 million pounds, and a 13-year one with MPV (multi-purpose vehicles) carmakers valued at 384 million pounds."

Veneer Manufacturing Centre of Jaguar Land Rover was acquired by Lawrence Automotive Holdings Ltd from Zhejiang province in November 2010.The value of the deal was confidential.

The company has seen significant growth since the acquisition due to the launch of the new Range Rover from Coventry. Lawrence worked with JLR to transfer their staff back to the other JLR sites during a training program to employ more than 600 new people on-site.

Mark Beecroft, vice-president of Lawrence, said: "The acquisition has demonstrated China's commitment to overseas growth and expansion."

You from Shandong said in July that the company will invest a further 15 million pounds to support the firm's continued growth and stay on top of the demand.

"We have exciting plans. Over the next two years, specific plans are already in place to inject further investment to modernize and expand the Covpress facility," You said.

"This will add much needed capacity and create more career opportunities."

Its latest investment plan will increase the workforce from about 550 to more than 700 in the next two years, making Coventry one of UK's largest private sector employers.

Such efforts have also been welcomed by the local populace.

Kit Halliday, joint CEO (Europe) for Covpress, said he believes that Chinese companies will not change the existing corporate culture and management strategy.

"The perception that Chinese investment in the UK is to overhaul the UK corporate culture and management code with a Chinese mentality is utterly false. There might be some apprehension at the start of the merger, but when business picks up, along with the creation of more job opportunities, everyone is happy," Halliday said.

Zhou from the Chinese embassy said: "The business communities from both China and the UK are keen to work together. The partnership serves to benefit both the UK economy and China's privately owned businesses' expansion abroad."
