"Volvo to set up joint venture with Geely in ChinaIndustry News | Ash | February 21, 2012 at 4:17 pm
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was initially reported that Volvo would be able to enter the Chinese market with its own production facilities as an independent company owing to its Chinese ownership at the hands of Geely, however according to our information the Chinese government still regards Volvo as a foreign company and requires it to have a partner prior to setting up a joint venture in the Chinese market. Geely, as Volvo’s owner, has stepped forward as the official partner to Volvo China.
Under the proposed agreement both Volvo and Geely will take a 50:50 share in the new company and will focus on producing Volvo’s in China and will also have a heavy focus on developing new energy vehicles and also a new sub brand. A Geely sub brand which would use Volvo platforms has long been rumored to be in development, but this is the first time that we have received solid news from Chinese media outlets.
Volvo has plans for multiple factories in the Chinese market which include Chengdu, Shanghai and Daqing City."

"Volvo sets up joint venture with its owner, Geely
Published on February 21, 2012 by Tycho de Feyter
Volvo Car will form a carmaking venture with majority shareholder Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., as part of plans to expand in the world’s largest vehicle market. Volvo will announce “concrete details” about the joint venture in about two months, Michael Ning, a Beijing-based spokesman for the company, said in a phone interview today.
Under current rules, the Gothenburg, Sweden-based automaker is considered a foreign carmaker despite being wholly owned by Chinese interests and needs a local partner before manufacturing in China, Ning said. The company is awaiting approval from the National Development and Reform Commission for a proposed plant in the southwestern city of Chengdu, he said.
Foreign automakers seek to expand in China, where rising affluence and lower vehicle-ownership levels helped the world’s second-largest economy overtake the U.S. as the biggest vehicle market in 2009. Volvo plans to invest as much as $11 billion worldwide over the next five years to tap rising demand in markets including China, Chief Executive Officer Jacoby said in February 2011.
A Chinese consortium including automaker Zhejiang Geely bought Volvo from Ford Motor Co. for $1.8 billion in August 2010, completing the biggest overseas acquisition by a Chinese carmaker. Zhejiang Geely owns 51 percent of Volvo, while the Chinese cities of Daqing and Jiading have 37 percent and 12 percent respectively.
The maker of the S40 sedan and XC90 sport-utility vehicle is considering an additional manufacturing plant and engine factory in China to its proposed factory in Chengdu, Freeman Shen, head of Volvo’s Chinese operations, said in an interview in June. The carmaker aims to double sales to 800,000 cars in the 10 years through 2020.
As part of the requirements for a Chinese carmaking joint venture, Volvo will also introduce a new China-only brand and more fuel-efficient vehicles, Ning said today."

"J.D. Power predicts Chinese automobile sales to increase 11% in 2012
By Carmen Lee From Gasgoo.comFebruary 20, 2012
Gasgoo.com (Shanghai February 20) - J.D. Power and Associates expects that Chinese automobile sales will grow in 11 percent in 2012, Beijing News reported today. J.D. Power made the announcement in Beijing last week. If the figure proves to be accurate, China should account for 40 percent of automobile sales worldwide this year.
According to statistics from the marketing firm, China accounted for 24 percent of global automobile sales last year. From 2011 to 2015, the country has constituted 70 percent of all sales growth in Asia.
In other news, Zeng Zhiling, director of JD Power-LMC Asia Pacific Forecasting, predicts that turbocharged engine-powered vehicles will account for 25 percent of all Chinese passenger vehicles by 2018. Domestic own brand manufacturers have also begun embracing the new technology. Start-stop technology is expected to become more widespread in the future."
