SSE to sell 25% stake in transmission network arm for £1.5bn
      https://uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/sse-sell-25-stake-transmis…
      ...
SSE has agreed an almost £1.5 billion deal to sell a quarter of its power transmission network business to a Canadian pension fund.

The UK power company said it will see the 25% stake in SSEN Transmission to Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board.

The transmission arm operates under its licenced entity Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission.

SSE told shareholders the deal will “help unlock significant growth” in the transmission business and SSE as a whole.

The company also confirmed that a new £750 million credit facility has been put in place to help the firm’s long-term funding requirements.

Gregor Alexander, finance director of SSE, will chair the business, with Ontaio Teachers’ getting a proportional representation on the board.

SSE Reiterates Guidance as High Power Prices Lift Earnings
      https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/sse-reiterates-guidance-as-high-…
      ...
SSE Plc maintained its earnings guidance for the year as soaring power prices boost earnings for some of its plants.

The UK utility expects full-year adjusted earnings per share of at least 120 pence, according to an update on the first quarter of its financial year. SSE saw stronger than expected output from its onshore wind farms and higher production from gas generation than the same period last year.

SSE is up about 6.9% this year, compared with a 10% decline in the Stoxx 600 utilities index and a 1.6% drop in the UK FTSE 100 benchmark stock index.

“We continue to make excellent progress on our Net Zero Acceleration Programme, investing at pace in the vital electricity infrastructure that will help build a more secure, affordable and sustainable energy system,” Gregor Alexander, SSE’s finance director, said in the statement. “We remain confident in our financial outlook for strong earnings growth this year.”

The company continues to work on the sale of a 25% stake in its transmission business and a formal process is now ongoing. SSE aims to have a sale agreed by the end of the calendar year.

UK Utilities Plunge on Report Sunak Orders Windfall Tax Plan
      https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/u-k-utilities-plunge-on-report-s…
      ...
U.K. utility firms sank after the Financial Times reported that Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak has ordered officials to prepare plans for a possible windfall tax on power generators as well as oil and gas firms.

SSE Plc fell as much as 11%, the most since the outbreak of Covid-19, while Drax Group Plc tumbled as much as 17% and Centrica Plc dropped as much as 9.3%. U.K. operators listed abroad also slid, with E.ON SE, Electricite de France SA and Iberdrola SA all declining.

Citigroup Inc. analyst Jenny Ping downgraded SSE to neutral from buy and Drax to sell from neutral. “The risk around UK windfall tax on the power sector including renewables companies is likely to overshadow the benefit of inflation and commodity prices,” she wrote in a note to clients.

The plans will target more than £10 billion ($12.6 billion) of excess profit for electricity generators, including wind farm operators, according to the FT, which cited unidentified government sources.

There have been some odd consequences. One is that with all this cheap day-ahead gas knocking around, Britain's power generators have been making merry, turning on their gas-fired power stations and producing as much electricity as they possibly can.

The upshot is the UK, which typically has to rely on imports of electricity from the continent, has temporarily become a big exporter of electricity, sending power at a rate of more than four gigawatts across to mainland Europe in recent days.

The other upshot is that not only are natural gas prices very low, so too are wholesale electricity prices, which are now lower in this country than in most other parts of Europe.

SSE raises profit guidance as energy costs soar
Renewable power boost and record high prices as a result of Ukraine war lead Scottish group to upgrade forecast
      https://www.ft.com/content/2906a738-f7dc-4c6d-a00d-3fd019163…
      ...
SSE has upgraded its full-year earnings projection after the energy group’s gas and hydro plants benefited from soaring power prices since Russia invaded Ukraine.

The FTSE 100 company, which also runs a regional electricity distribution network, said on Tuesday it expected adjusted earnings per share to range of 92p-97p, compared with guidance last month of at least 90p.

Russia’s invasion has sent electricity prices to record highs, while owners of steady sources of energy such as gas have benefited as they helped balance the electricity grid during several periods of low winds. More recently, SSE benefited from a revival of renewable energy — including wind farms and hydro generation — as a result of more suitable weather conditions.

“The war has had significant consequences for energy markets and policy, contributing to historically high and volatile prices,” the company said in a statement. “SSE has so far been served well by its prudent hedging approach and has successfully managed any increasing credit and collateral requirements.”
