Ford-SK venture to get $9.2 bln US loan for battery plants
WASHINGTON :The U.S. Energy Department plans to lend up to US$9.2 billion to a joint venture of Ford Motor and South Korea's SK On to help it build three battery plants in Tennessee and Kentucky. The conditional commitment for the low-cost government loan for the BlueOval SK joint venture comes from the government's Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing (ATVM) loan program.
SK is a unit of South Korea's SK Innovation. The joint venture is building three battery manufacturing facilities in Kentucky and Tennessee capable of collectively producing more than 120 gigawatt hours annually, the Energy Department said.
Jigar Shah, head of the Energy Department's Loan Programs Office, said in an interview its goal "is to have people choose to put these supply chains here in the United States, not in other countries, and to do them faster and more confidently here."
This is the sixth loan for battery supply chain projects from the ATVM program.
The plants will displace more than 455 million gallons of gasoline per year for the lifetime of the vehicles powered by the batteries they manufacture. The project is expected to create 5,000 construction jobs in Tennessee and Kentucky, and 7,500 operations jobs once the plants are up and running.

Inside the Race to Remake Lithium Extraction for EV Batteries
LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana (Reuters) - The global battle to reshape the lithium industry is sucking in oil producers, tech startups and entrenched mining giants, each jockeying to be the first to reinvent how a metal key to the green energy transition is produced.A fleet of direct lithium extraction (DLE) technologies are on the verge of tapping salty brine deposits across Europe, Asia, North America and elsewhere that the U.S. Geological Survey estimates are filled with roughly 70% of the world's reserves of the metal.
At stake is influence over an industry expected to grow to more than $10 billion in annual revenue within the next decade as the successful DLE companies will supply lithium for electric vehicle batteries in hours or days, not months or longer as with existing large, water-intensive evaporation ponds and open-pit mines.

Factbox-As electric cars take off, makers pledge US$14.3 billion for US lithium iron phosphate
Interest and investment in lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells and materials, used to power electric vehicles, continue to climb in the United States. LFP is a lower-cost competitor to nickel cobalt manganese cells.
Seven companies have committed more than US$14 billion in future LFP manufacturing facilities in the U.S., with others, including Tesla and Rivian, reportedly considering similar investments.
Here is a look at some of the announced LFP projects.
FORD
Ford Motor is planning to open a US$3.5 billion LFP manufacturing plant in 2026 in Marshall, Michigan, using technology licensed from China’s CATL.
GM
General Motors has announced a US$3 billion LFP plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with partner Samsung SDI, to open in 2026.
LG ENERGY SOLUTION
South Korea’s LGES plans to add LFP production later this year to its Holland, Michigan, battery cell plant as part of a US$1.7 billion expansion.
GOTION
Chinese battery maker Gotion has announced a US$2.4 billion project to make battery materials in Big Rapids, Michigan, starting in 2025.
FREYR
Norwegian battery startup Freyr expects to open a US$1.7 billion battery plant outside Atlanta, using technology from Aleees and 24M. It has not specified a start date.
OUR NEXT ENERGY
Michigan startup ONE plans to start pilot production of battery cells late this year at a US$1.6 billion plant in Van Buren Township.
ICL
Israel’s ICL Group has announced it will build a US$400 million battery materials plant near St Louis, Missouri, to open in 2024.
