Caspian has 10 prospecting licences covering 1,040sq km in the Tshikapa diamond field in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the 338sq km Osenase reconnaissance licence in the Birim Diamond Field in Ghana.
The Congo licences were applied for when ground became available on the introduction of the new mining act. Caspian`s applications targeted areas within the field with the potential to contain source rocks of the prolific alluvial diamond production within the field. Although the source of many of the diamonds found in conglomerates on the licence areas is in neighbouring Angola, variations in the diamonds suggest that there may also be local kimberlitic sources. The Congo diamond licences were farmed out to De Beers in November 2005. De Beers can earn a 70% interest by carrying out all exploration and a feasibility study, at which time Caspian can elect to contribute 30% of the cost of developing a mine, or dilute to a 5% equity.
The Osenase licence covers areas of significant past diamond production and is also prospective for tantalum. The licence area is known to contain source rocks for part of the Birim diamond field, which has produced over 100 million carats of alluvial diamonds during the last 60 years. The licence also contains areas of known alluvial gold and tantalum mineralisation. Discussions are being held with parties interested in acquiring these leases.
