(as)

Eastman Kodak senkt Jahresdividende

Kodak to Expand Availability of Radiology Information System; Will Start with U.S. Market
ROCHESTER, N.Y., Oct 13, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Eastman Kodak Company said it will expand the availability of its successful radiology information system (RIS) to medical facilities in the United States during 2004.
The Kodak RIS 2010 - already available in Europe and Australia - will debut in countries beyond the U.S. at a later time.
The U.S. is a key market for the RIS 2010 for this simple reason: "Since almost 80% of U.S. hospitals have radiology information systems that are more than 10 years old, a large opportunity exists to install new systems," said L. Jeffrey Markin, General Manager of Healthcare Information Systems and Vice President, Kodak`s Health Imaging Group. "We also see the potential for integrating these systems with other Kodak medical imaging technology."
Medical facilities almost always integrate radiology information systems - which serve as the information management backbone for a radiology department - with picture archiving and communications systems (PACS). This combination of image-centric PACS and information-centric RIS enables hospitals and imaging centers to simultaneously manage and archive medical images (such as digital x-ray images, MRI images and CT images) and information (such as radiology reports on patients), thus improving productivity and, ultimately, patient care.
The trend toward such systems is apparent in a "2003 Hospital CIO Survey" conducted by Banc of America Securities. It shows that 58% of chief information officers in U.S. hospitals plan to purchase PACS within the next three years. Kodak, based on research by Frost & Sullivan, also estimates that the PACS market is growing rapidly at 12-15% annually.
"The rapid adoption of fully-integrated PACS/RIS platforms is explained by the tangible benefits these systems offer hospitals in improving operations in the radiology department," Markin noted. "At our current RIS 2010 installations, we commonly hear that the platform has greatly improved both workflow management and workflow speed."
In May, Kodak completed a RIS 2010 installation at John Hunter Hospital in New South Wales, Australia, which performs approximately 87,000 radiological exams per year. The company is now completing installation of RIS 2010s in seven other regional hospitals, which comprise Hunter Area Health Service.
"We`ve certainly seen changes in terms of productivity and efficiency since the installation of RIS 2010," said Michael Symonds, General Manager, Hunter Health Imaging Service. "Processes within our unit have become much more transparent... This has improved workflow, particularly in the pre- and post-exam phases of our operation."
In addition to PACS/RIS, Kodak`s Health Imaging Group offers digital medical image capture technologies, such as Kodak DirectView computed radiography and digital radiography systems, which capture x-ray images digitally and support the healthcare community`s move to digital technologies.
Markin concluded: "As the convergence of information and images happens over time, we expect healthcare providers will transition to digital imaging at their own pace. As hospitals look to purchase PACS/RIS-integrated technology, Kodak is committed to providing the customized solutions and individualized service and support that healthcare facilities need."
About Kodak`s Health Imaging Group
Kodak`s Health Imaging Group is a world leader in developing, manufacturing and marketing intelligent imaging products from analog to digital. Its portfolio includes computed radiography and digital radiography systems, laser imagers, picture archiving and communications systems (PACS), radiology information systems (RIS), traditional mammography and x-ray film systems, dental imaging and services. The group, with 2002 revenues of $2.27 billion, has served the global health care community for more than 100 years.
The Health Imaging Group and Kodak`s other major businesses--the Photography Group, the Commercial Imaging Group and the Components business--together are leading participants in infoimaging, a $385 billion industry created by the convergence of image-and-information technology. Infoimaging unites three closely related imaging markets that enable end users to more easily capture, process and share images and information: devices; infrastructure, such as PACS/networks; and professional services and media.
